Hasselblad Image Quality.
Resolution, Natural Color, Optical Purity, Clarity, and Detail are all key components in defining superior image quality. Hasselblads Phocus imaging software provides both the automatic solution and the toolset for individual workflow and image quality management.
Resolution why Bigger is Better
A large sensor format is the key to achieving exceptional image quality. A large sensor size allows the additional benefit of a larger focusing screen and thus a larger viewfinder image. Compared to 35mm, medium-format lenses allow for smaller apertures to be used maintaining a shallow depth-of-field, with reduced lens aberrations. Since the medium-format frame size is larger, images do not have to be enlarged as much, thereby improving the r esolution of the final image. Technological advances benefit all sensor sizes equally. Larger sensors will always remain at the top of the scale. Medium-format lens resolution outperforms 35mm lens resolution compare our images to those from any 35mm DSLR system.

Natural Color

The Hasselblad Natural Color Solution accurately reproduces the full visible color spectrum be it skin tones, special pro uct colors, or difficult gradations easily and effectively, d every time and with the use of a single color profile. Our c omplete knowledge of the filter and sensor characteristics of each individual camera has made this possible.
Optical Purity (Hasselblad H-system lenses)
Digital Auto Correction (DAC) is Hasselblads unique way of digitally correcting for the optical phenomena that create minor optical errors. Whether it is distortion, chromatic aberration or vignetting, DAC automatically corrects for these errors without struggling with sliders, numbers etc by using detailed lens information that resides inside the RAW 3FR file. The CFV II 16 Mpix Digital Back
The Hasselblad CFV II digital back is designed expressly for the 503CW camera, but can turn most existing Hasselblad V System cameras into a digital workhorse. The CFV II back is custom designed to match the appearance and functionality of the Hasselblad V System cameras and uses a square format 16 megapixel sensor that is 50% larger than even the largest 35mm DSLRs. In addition, the sensor used provide more pixels for better resolution and larger pixels, which means less image noise, better dynamic range, and improved detail, especially in highlight and shadow areas. The Hasselblad CFV II combines timeless design with modern technology, featuring powerful digital workflow tools such as Hasselblads Instant Approval Architecture (IAA), an enhanced set of feedback tools designed to drastically simplify the image selection process, and direct conversion to Adobes DNG format in FlexColor and Phocus. Other advanced features include Hasselblads new Natural Color Solutions and 3F RAW file format, a choice of three separate storage modes (choosing freely between the u ltimate portability of a CF card, the ultra-fast 100GB Image Bank II, or tethered computer hard drive operation with extended controls), and compati ility with large format cameras b using a V System interface plate.

The 503CW camera also boasts a sturdy, mechanical construction with a robust, one piece aluminum alloy body, making it ideal for the often-demanding world of daily professional use. The 503 CW ameras provide TTL flash c metering, power winder/IR remote options, and compati ility to accessories b past and present. Using Hasselblads renowned central shutter lenses, these cameras provide almost vibration-free operation, quiet exposure, and flash sync at all shutter speeds, up to 1/500 sec. The innovative GMS (Gliding Mirror System) produces a bright, full viewfinder image with all Hasselblad lenses and remote capability means you can operate the camera from anywhere in the studio.

Full flexibility

The 503CWD II and 503CW/CFV II cameras can also use any of the V Systems interchangeable film magazines, a helpful feature in extreme temperatures or when batteries run low. The camera also accepts se eral types of viewfinders, v enabling you to choose a style of shooting that works for you or for a specific situation. In addition, the built-in flash control ystem (TTL/OTF) helps turn s flash hotography into childs play, measp uring the light reflected off the sensor/ film surface and automatically controlling the flash to provide the perfect exposure, regardless of the lens focal length or lighting conditions.
The first step to perfect images

The V system offers a range of superior quality lenses with unrivalled specifications. All lenses use high performance, central lens shutters, making them s tabile, quiet, and particularly useful for flash work at fast shutter speeds, delivering correct captures at flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec. The 503CWD II and 503 CW are compatible with the entire range of Hasselblad central shutter lenses, from 40 to 150mm in focal length. All lenses feature T* anti-reflection coating and internal stray light reduction to produce unbeatable image contrast and color saturation. The Hasselblad 503CWD II Digital Camera comes without lens to allow the widest personal choice; a 40mm or 50mm lens often being chosen as "standard" due to the 1.5x sensor crop factor.

CF Adapter

As a bonus, all CF lenses can also be used with cameras from the Hasselblad H system via the CF adapter. The simple addition of this accessory provides a very economical and effective way of optimising your equipment.

TECHNOLOGY V SYSTEM

A DIGITAL WORKHORSE

BY HANNS W. FRIEDRICH PHOTO: JRGEN MLLER
It may have appeared as though the digital revolution had completely ignored Hasselblads renowned V system. But the new CFV digital back now propels the tradition-laden V camera into the digital age while managing to preserve its identity.
It clips easily onto Hasselblads current 503CW, as well as onto the older, classic Hasselblad six-by-sixes, blending in seamlessly with the traditional look and feel of the V system. Most significantly, the image sensor is based on the basic square format, even today an attractive photographic starting point. The square has an aesthetic all its own and for years it has been a cornerstone of the global photographic culture. When required, the images can always
more effective, lower perspective. In the years prior to the digital age, this was the way the subject was viewed by the studio photographer. While the image sensor of the Hasselblad CFV-Back is 50 per cent bigger than the 35mm film format, measuring 36 by 36 millimeters, it is still considerably smaller than the 56 by 56 millimeter film format. What ensues is a 1.5x crop factor, which turns out to be far less invasive to the workflow than numbers alone might lead one to assume. The CFVBack delivers Star Quality images and thus continues to advance one of Hasselblads chief assets. Take the Natural Color Solution, for example, which guarantees extremely accurate and natural color reproduction using a single, univer-

One of the classic V camera models of that year (below) Hasselblads V system cameras have enjoyed immense popularity for 50 years, consistently taking professional photography to new heights. All the best photographers will have worked with a V camera at some stage in their careers. Their unforgettable V pictures have shaped our collective consciousness two such icons of celebrity photography are on this page. However, over the past few years, owners of classic Hasselblad cameras have had to be patient while all eyes were focused on the innovative H system, Hasselblads newest range. Sooner or later one has to wonder: whats up with the V camera? 1 The V camera, a traditional instrument based on the most popular 6 x 6 format, is a real survival artist in a photographic world dramatically changed by the digital revolution. In the last few decades we have seen Singer, actress, supermodel Grace Jones in a 1987 campaign for Hasselblad, photographed by Greg Gorman (above) sally applicable color profile. With a resolution of 16 mega-pixels, the CFV-Back may lag behind the H3D models, but the attainable picture quality is guaranteed to surpass anything attainable with a 35mm DSLR. This is possible because the CFV sensor allows each pixel an abundance of breathing space, thereby keeping color and luminance noise to an absolute minimum, even before post manipulation. The space between each pixel measures a generous 9 micrometers. By comparison, the top 35mm DSLR brands generally have only 5 to 6 micrometers between pixels. V pictures are therefore exceptionally clean. And because the sensor is designed to manage without micro lenses, it exposes homogeneously from image center to image corner, generating a crisp picture with a simple purity not found with smaller

the square format becoming even more popular, especially in the areas of studio and portrait photography. It was obvious the robust V camera had to join the digital world, so Hasselblad created the new CFV digital back which transforms the legendary film camera into a powerful digital tool capable of breathtaking image quality. be cropped into other aspect ratios without notable concessions. Usually, professional photographers shoot with the square format using the integrated, foldable waist level viewfinder because it enables the photographer to maintain a loose stance and direct eye contact with the subject, without having to disappear behind the viewfinder or perform awkward bodily contortions. The camera itself picks up on the action from what is generally the

V SYSTEM AT A GLANCE

1 THE CFV DIGITAL BACK

The CFV marries harmoniously into the look and feel of classic V cameras, while boasting cutting-edge digital technology and a 16mega-pixel sensor tailored to the time-honored square format. The result: supremequality digital pics, rich in detail and color
cameras. The photographs on the following pages were taken using the CFV-Back and demonstrate to great effect the quality that can be achieved with the CFV in large format printing. The legendary Carl Zeiss lenses found in V cameras also play a key role in the image formation process. The latest models deliver impeccable sharpness, contrast and accuracy. It is these attributes that have greatly contributed to the legend status of the V camera. All existing lenses are digitally compatible, bearing in mind that a few of the lenses from the fifties and sixties are sure to lag behind the reproduction quality of more recently built models. However, in this context analog and digital lenses are affected in the same way. The sensor will capture the character of a lens its strengths and weaknesses as ruthlessly as film.
camera, lens, digital back and, not least, subject. The CFV understands how to make the most of its resolution. As a result, the pictures are rich in detail and require next to no post manipulation. Not to forget, V users can at any time choose to draw upon anyone of Hasselblads CF backs. However, then we depart the cubist world to arrive at a defined 4:3 aspect ratio. If this is what you need, you can push your digitalized V camera to 22 or even as far as 39 mega-pixels. The Multishot backs offer still life photographers yet another step up in terms of detail and color recognition, as well as zero moir.

DIGITAL V WORLDS

The digital V camera covers everything from landscape to fashion to glamour photography. On the following pages, Jan Grahn and Thomas Knieps demonstrate just how far the digital V camera can be pushed. Jan Grahn. Born in Sweden in 1930, the biologist is an avid landscape photographer. Ive been using Hasselblad cameras for more than 50 years recently I started working with the digital CFV Back. Its great being able to see the subject and the exposure in relation to each other. It opens up to whole new dimensions on the path to capture the ultimate shot. Thomas Knieps. The established fashion photographer was born in Germany in 1971. I appreciate how we see top-ofthe-line lenses blending in seamlessly with high-quality chip technology. Working in catalogue photography, in particular, I am heavily reliant on a fast workflow and this is granted thanks to file sizes not much larger than those of DSLR solutions, but with substantially higher quality.
