The ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles (eTV) program acquired the Renault Mgane dCi 110 because it is equipped with advanced diesel technologies, including common rail direct fuel injection, advanced glow plugs to reduce cold starting problems and a diesel particulate filter with regeneration. These technologies allow the Mgane to obtain low fuel consumption (combined city/highway rating of 4.6 L/100 km) and to lower the vehicles emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants. The vehicles piezoelectric injectors and common rail direct fuel injection introduce precise amounts of fuel at a very high pressure. The resulting fine mist of fuel allows for a more homogeneous mixture of fuel and air in the cylinder, providing a more efficient combustion and reducing vibration and noise. The diesel particulate filter traps unburned carbon deposits (soot) before they can be released into the atmosphere, reducing particulate matter emissions and minimizing the impact on the health of Canadians. In addition, the Mgane dCi110 offers less than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometre, and is 95% recyclable by massstandard vehicles are usually about 75% recyclable by mass. The eTV program will be studying the vehicles fuel consumption and emissions over 5-cycle testing, fuel consumption and emissions at different static load and speeds, as well as the operation of the glow plugs under extreme cold soak conditions.
