Connecting the AC adapter
WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment: Plug the power cord into an AC outlet that is easily accessible at all times. Disconnect power from the device by unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet (not by unplugging the power cord from the device). If provided with a 3-pin attachment plug on the power cord, plug the cord into a grounded (earthed) 3pin outlet. Do not disable the power cord grounding pin, for example, by attaching a 2-pin adapter. The grounding pin is an important safety feature. To connect the device to external AC power, follow these steps: 1. 2. Plug the AC adapter into the power connector (1) on the device. Plug the power cord into the AC adapter (2).
Plug the other end of the power cord into an AC outlet (3).
Using battery power
When a charged battery is in the device and the device is not plugged into external power, the device runs on battery power. When the device is plugged into external AC power, the device runs on AC power. If the device contains a charged battery and is running on external AC power supplied through the AC adapter, the device switches to battery power if the AC adapter is disconnected from the device. NOTE: The display brightness is decreased to save battery life when you disconnect AC power. To increase display brightness, use the fn+f4 hotkey or reconnect the AC adapter. You can keep a battery in the device or in storage, depending on how you work. Keeping the battery in the device whenever the device is plugged into AC power charges the battery and also protects your work in case of a power outage. However, a battery in the device slowly discharges when the device is off and unplugged from external power. WARNING! To reduce potential safety issues, use only the battery provided with the device, a replacement battery provided by HP, or a compatible battery purchased from HP. Device battery life varies depending on power management settings, programs running on the device, display brightness, external devices connected to the device, and other factors.
Displaying the remaining battery charge
Inserting or removing the battery
CAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole power source may cause loss of information. To prevent loss of information, save your work and initiate Hibernation or shut down the device before removing the battery.
To insert the battery: 1. 2. 3. Turn the device upside down on a flat surface. Insert the battery into the battery bay (1) and rotate it downward until it is seated (2). Slide the right battery release latch (3) to lock the battery into place.
To remove the battery: 1. 2. 3. Turn the device upside down on a flat surface. Slide the battery release latches (1) to release the battery. Pivot the battery (2) upward and remove the battery from the device (3).
Charging a battery
WARNING! Do not charge the device battery while you are onboard aircraft. The battery charges whenever the device is plugged into external power through an AC adapter, an optional power adapter, an optional docking device, or an optional expansion product. The battery charges whether the device is off or in use, but it charges faster when the device is off.
Charging may take longer if a battery is new, has been unused for 2 weeks or more, or is much warmer or cooler than room temperature. To prolong battery life and optimize the accuracy of battery charge displays, follow these recommendations: If you are charging a new battery, charge it fully before turning on the device. Charge the battery until the battery light turns off. NOTE: If the device is on while the battery is charging, the battery meter in the notification area may show 100 percent charge before the battery is fully charged. Allow the battery to discharge below 5 percent of a full charge through normal use before charging it. If the battery has been unused for one month or more, calibrate the battery instead of simply charging it.
The battery light displays charge status: On: The battery is charging. Blinking: The battery that is the only available power source has reached a low battery level. When the battery reaches a critical battery level, the battery light begins blinking rapidly. Off: The battery is fully charged, in use, or not installed.
Maximizing battery discharge time
Battery discharge time varies depending on the features you use while on battery power. Maximum discharge time gradually shortens, as the battery storage capacity naturally degrades. Tips for maximizing battery discharge time: Lower the brightness on the display. Remove the battery from the device when it is not being used or charged. Store the battery in a cool, dry location.
Managing low battery levels
The information in this section describes the alerts and system responses set at the factory. Some lowbattery alerts and system responses can be changed using Power Management Preferences in Settings. Preferences set using Power Management do not affect lights.
Identifying low battery levels
When a battery that is the sole power source for the device reaches a low battery level, the battery light blinks. If a low battery level is not resolved, the device enters a critical battery level, and the battery light blinks rapidly.
The device takes the following actions for a critical battery level: If Hibernation is enabled and the device is on or in Suspend, the device initiates Hibernation. If Hibernation is disabled and the device is on or in Suspend, the device remains briefly in Suspend, and then shuts down and loses any unsaved information.
Step 2: Disable Hibernation and Suspend
1. Right-click the Power icon in the notification area, at the bottom of the Home Screen, and then click Preferences. or Select Settings > System tab > Power Management. 2. Under the On AC Power and On Battery Power tabs, record the current values for the following settings: 3. 4. Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for: Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:
Move the slider all the way to the right to change all 4 of these settings to Never. Click Close.
Step 3: Discharge the battery
The device must remain on while the battery is being discharged. The battery can discharge whether or not you are using the device, but the battery will discharge faster while you are using it. If you plan to leave the device unattended during the discharge, save your information before beginning the discharge procedure. If you use the device occasionally during the discharge procedure and have set energy-saving timeouts, expect the following performance from the system during the discharge process: The monitor will not turn off automatically. Hard drive speed will not decrease automatically when the device is idle. System-initiated Hibernation will not occur.
To discharge a battery: 1. 2. Unplug the device from its external power source, but do not turn off the device. Run the device on battery power until the battery is discharged. The battery light begins to blink when the battery has discharged to a low battery level. When the battery is discharged, the battery light turns off and the device shuts down.
Step 4: Fully recharge the battery
To recharge the battery: 1. Plug the device into external power and maintain external power until the battery is fully recharged. When the battery is recharged, the battery light on the device turns off. You can use the device while the battery is recharging, but the battery will charge faster if the device is off. 2. If the device is off, turn it on when the battery is fully charged and the battery light has turned off.
Step 5: Reenable Hibernation and Suspend
CAUTION: Failure to reenable Hibernation after calibration may result in a full battery discharge and information loss if the device reaches a critical battery level. 1. Right-click the Power icon in the notification area, at the bottom of the Home Screen, and then click Preferences. or Select Settings > System tab > Power Management. 2. Under the On AC Power and On Battery Power tabs, reset the previous values for the following settings: 3. Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for: Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:
Click Close.
Conserving battery power
Select low power-use settings through Power Management Preferences. Turn off wireless and local area network (LAN) connections and exit modem applications when you are not using them. Disconnect external devices that are not plugged into an external power source, when you are not using them. Stop, disable, or remove any external media cards that you are not using. Use the fn+f3 and fn+f4 hotkeys to adjust screen brightness as needed. If you leave your work, initiate Suspend or Hibernation, or shut down the device.

The fn+f2 hotkey can also alternate images among other devices receiving video information from the device. The following video transmission types, with examples of devices that use them, are supported by the fn+f2 hotkey: LCD (device display) External VGA (most external monitors)
Cleaning the TouchPad and keyboard
Dirt and grease on the TouchPad can cause the pointer to jump around on the screen. To avoid this, clean the TouchPad with a damp cloth, and wash your hands frequently when using the device. WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to internal components, do not use a vacuum cleaner attachment to clean the keyboard. A vacuum cleaner can deposit household debris on the keyboard surface. Clean the keyboard regularly to prevent keys from sticking and to remove dust, lint, and particles that can become trapped beneath the keys. A can of compressed air with a straw extension can be used to blow air around and under the keys to loosen and remove debris.
Traveling and shipping
For best results, follow these traveling and shipping tips: Prepare the device for traveling or shipping: Back up your information. Remove all external media cards, such as digital cards.
CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the device, damage to a drive, or loss of information, remove the media from a drive before removing the drive from a drive bay, and before shipping, storing, or traveling with a drive. Turn off and then disconnect all external devices. Shut down the device.
Take along a backup of your information. Keep the backup separate from the device. When traveling by air, carry the device as hand luggage, and do not check it in with the rest of your bags. CAUTION: Avoid exposing a drive to magnetic fields. Security devices with magnetic fields include airport walk-through devices and security wands. The airport security devices that check carry-on luggage, such as conveyor belts, use X-rays instead of magnetism and do not damage a drive.
In-flight device use is at the discretion of the airline. If you plan to use the device during a flight, check with the airline in advance. If the device will be unused and disconnected from external power for more than 2 weeks, remove the battery pack and store it separately. If you are shipping the device or a drive, use suitable protective packaging and label the package FRAGILE. If your device is equipped with an 802.11b/g device, a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) device, or a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) device, or a similar wireless device, the use of such a device may be restricted in some environments. These restrictions may apply onboard aircraft, in hospitals, near explosives, and in hazardous locations. If you are uncertain of the policy that applies to the use of a particular device, ask for authorization to use it before you turn it on. If you are traveling internationally, follow these suggestions: Check the device-related customs regulations for each country or region on your itinerary. Check the power cord and adapter requirements for each location in which you plan to use the device. Voltage, frequency, and plug configurations vary. CAUTION: To reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or damage to the equipment, do not attempt to power the device with a voltage converter kit sold for appliances.

Removal and replacement procedures
Preliminary replacement requirements
Tools required
You will need the following tools to complete the removal and replacement procedures: Flat-bladed screwdriver Magnetic screwdriver Phillips P0 and P1 screwdrivers
Service considerations
The following sections include some of the considerations that you must keep in mind during disassembly and assembly procedures. NOTE: As you remove each subassembly from the device, place the subassembly (and all accompanying screws) away from the work area to prevent damage.
Plastic parts
CAUTION: Using excessive force during disassembly and reassembly can damage plastic parts. Use care when handling the plastic parts. Apply pressure only at the points designated in the maintenance instructions.
Cables and connectors
CAUTION: When servicing the device, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable placement can damage the device. Cables must be handled with extreme care to avoid damage. Apply only the tension required to unseat or seat the cables during removal and insertion. Handle cables by the connector whenever possible. In all cases, avoid bending, twisting, or tearing cables. Be sure that cables are routed in such a way that they cannot be caught or snagged by parts being removed or replaced. Handle flex cables with extreme care; these cables tear easily.
Drive handling
CAUTION: Drives are fragile components that must be handled with care. To prevent damage to the device, damage to a drive, or loss of information, observe these precautions: Before removing or inserting a hard drive, shut down the device. If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system. Before handling a drive, be sure that you are discharged of static electricity. While handling a drive, avoid touching the connector. Handle drives on surfaces covered with at least one inch of shock-proof foam. Avoid dropping drives from any height onto any surface. After removing a hard drive, an optical drive, or a diskette drive, place it in a static-proof bag. Avoid exposing a hard drive to products that have magnetic fields, such as monitors or speakers. Avoid exposing a drive to temperature extremes or liquids. If a drive must be mailed, place the drive in a bubble pack mailer or other suitable form of protective packaging and label the package FRAGILE.
Chapter 4 Removal and replacement procedures
Grounding guidelines
Electrostatic discharge damage
Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitivity. Networks built into many integrated circuits provide some protection, but in many cases, ESD contains enough power to alter device parameters or melt silicon junctions. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor can destroy static-sensitive devices or microcircuitry. Even if the spark is neither felt nor heard, damage may have occurred. An electronic device exposed to ESD may not be affected at all and can work perfectly throughout a normal cycle. Or the device may function normally for a while, then degrade in the internal layers, reducing its life expectancy. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the device when you are removing or installing internal components, observe these precautions: Keep components in their electrostatic-safe containers until you are ready to install them. Use nonmagnetic tools. Before touching an electronic component, discharge static electricity by using the guidelines described in this section. Avoid touching pins, leads, and circuitry. Handle electronic components as little as possible. If you remove a component, place it in an electrostatic-safe container. The following table shows how humidity affects the electrostatic voltage levels generated by different activities. CAUTION: A product can be degraded by as little as 700 V.
Typical electrostatic voltage levels Relative humidity Event Walking across carpet Walking across vinyl floor Motions of bench worker Removing DIPS from plastic tube Removing DIPS from vinyl tray Removing DIPS from Styrofoam Removing bubble pack from PCB Packing PCBs in foam-lined box 10% 35,000 V 12,000 V 6,000 V 2,000 V 11,500 V 14,500 V 26,500 V 21,000 V 40% 15,000 V 5,000 V 800 V 700 V 4,000 V 5,000 V 20,000 V 11,000 V 55% 7,500 V 3,000 V 400 V 400 V 2,000 V 3,500 V 7,000 V 5,000 V
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packaging and transporting equipment: To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. Protect ESD-sensitive parts and assemblies with conductive or approved containers or packaging. Keep ESD-sensitive parts in their containers until the parts arrive at static-free workstations. Place items on a grounded surface before removing items from their containers. Always be properly grounded when touching a component or assembly. Store reusable ESD-sensitive parts from assemblies in protective packaging or nonconductive foam. Use transporters and conveyors made of antistatic belts and roller bushings. Be sure that mechanized equipment used for moving materials is wired to ground and that proper materials are selected to avoid static charging. When grounding is not possible, use an ionizer to dissipate electric charges.
The following table lists the shielding protection provided by antistatic bags and floor mats.
Material Antistatic plastic Carbon-loaded plastic Metallized laminate Use Bags Floor mats Floor mats Voltage protection level 1,500 V 7,500 V 5,000 V
Unknown user password
If the device you are servicing has an unknown user password, follow these steps to clear the password: NOTE: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. These steps also clear CMOS.
Shut down the device. If you are unsure whether the device is off or in Hibernation, turn the device on, and then shut it down through the operating system. Disconnect all external devices connected to the device. Disconnect the power from the device by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the device. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 37). Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery (see RTC battery on page 52). Wait approximately 5 minutes. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the device. Connect AC power to the device. Do not reinsert any batteries at this time. Turn on the device.
All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.
Component replacement procedures
This chapter provides removal and replacement procedures. There are as many as 49 screws, in 7 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the device. Make special note of each screw size and location during removal and replacement.
