Profoto Compact PlusProfoto UV Coated Flashtube F/COMPACT Plus 600 331511
With proper handling these flashtubes may last for tens of thousands of flashes under normal use. This flashtube is UV-Coated or UV-Corrected. UV flashtubes have a yellow appearance and they counteract the excess blue 5700° or higher output of non-UV coated flashtubes. UV Coating lowers the color temperature to 5500° which is the color of noon daylight on a clear day.

Four fully asymmetric lamp outlets like having 4 generators in one Full 8 f-stop power range - in increments of 1/10 f-stop Highest power stability from flashto-flash; no f-stop shifts Constant colour temperature, flashto-flash, and over the entire power range independent of the number of flash heads used Ie, precision and control for both analogue AND digital photography Mac software included for easy and efficient set-ups and control Innovative special functions such as delays and multipops.available via front panel AND software Elegant ergonomic design Extensive range of light shaping tools and accessories Optional wireless synchronisation by digital radio signals

Perfect digital control

With new technology in the studio, there are new possibilities as well as new demands. The latest Profoto flash generator, the Profoto D4, gives you perfect control of the light shaping process, no matter if you're shooting with film or with a digital back. And for the digitized studio, the Profoto Studio software gives you a whole new range of possibilities. The D4 features four fully asymmetrical outlets - like having four generators in one. Second, the energy can be controlled over 8 full f-stops, in increments of 1/10 f-stops. Third, the output of the D4 is so stable that even digital backs can't record the difference flash to flash or when decreasing the energy. (See separate article Stable light - key to efficient production.) All in all, because of Profoto's long experience and breakthrough digital technology, the Profoto D4 delivers extraordinary. . performance. Or, to put it another way: the D4 is more than just a power supply its a creative light shaping tool.
Three months in the Kalahari
London-based fine arts photographer David Bruce returned from a 3-month trip to a remote corner of Namibia where he lived with and recorded the lives of the Ju/hoansi bushmen of the Kalahari, one of the last great wilderness areas of Southern Africa. It started three years ago as a personal project, but now after his third trip to the region an exhibition and a book are in the pipeline, sponsored by Hasselblad (UK) Limited, Ilford, Profoto and Air Namibia. The area in which David has been working is some 300 miles from the nearest small town, so he has to be totally self-sufficient. He has to prepare a 4x4 with camping equipment, diesel, food, photographic equipment and a mobile studio.
Efficient digital workflow
For the fully digitized studio, using digital camera backs controlled by a computer, the D4 and the
Profoto Studio software enables a much more efficient workflow, especially when working with a ceiling system. Why? Simply because all your controls are on the same computer screen. When shooting products, you can quickly and accurately fine-tune the light with a few clicks of the mouse; expose with the digital back software and the picture appears on-screen almost instantly. Using Profoto Studio, you can then easily, and quickly, adjust the light output, and re-expose - until the light is absolutely perfect. Profoto Studio also enables you to create profiles for documenting and reusing setups, to give you a clear view of large settings, and, last but not least, to group lamps and generators for functional control of your light.

Extended capabilities

On this trip, I took a Profoto Pro-7b battery operated generator and head as I wanted to extend my working capabilities another tool for creating different visual effects. I like working with the graphics of imagery and always use only one head. I also wanted to photograph artifacts using flash, David told us. The Pro-7b unit is compact and very easy to use. Charging is simple via the cigarette lighter socket in the 4x4. Im not a techno head, so I like equipment to be simple, effective and quality made. I have used many portable generators in the past, but few come near to matching the Pro-7b, David said.

Bracket the whole setup

Among other things, groups can be used to proportionally bracket entire, multi-generator settings. Lamps shaping the background and the lamps adding highlights, for instance, can be controlled as two separate, but coherent, units. Profoto Studio also controls the D4 special features, such as delays for all or between lamps, and multipops for longer exposures or strobe effects. In total, the software can control up to 127 generators from a single computer. The Profoto Studio software is included with every Profoto D4, together with a printed manual and a USB cable for attaching the generator to the computer.

Shape, form and light

The Nyae Nyae region of the Kalahari is a place of magic and unspoilt beauty, and the ancestral home of the Ju/hoansi people who have successfully retained their historical claims to the land. My images pay a visual homage to the spirit, poetry and natural grace of these extraordinary people. I construct images using shape, form and light, that can neither be classified as photojournalism nor documentary in the National Geographic sense, but document and visually celebrate simultaneously, David explained. That meant, among other things, that he asked the Ju/hoansi to dress in traditional outfits even though they normally wear jeans and t-shirts these days. However, they still hunt in the traditional fashion: by sneaking through the bush and killing their prey with bow and arrow. From the documentary point of view, this conscious lapse from pure photo journalism was compensated by the fact that David lived with the bushmen for three months, creating a firm platform of intimacy and understanding of the Ju/hoansi living conditions. The pictures speak for themselves. www.davebruce.co.uk www.profoto.com
Combine it anyway you like
The Profoto lines of flash generators and light shapers form a unified system that can be combined without limitations. And thats the way its got to be, because every single photographer wants to shape his or her own very special light. (The system chart on the back side of this page shows how everythings connected.) Over the years we have gathered a broad range of tools. There are of course reflectors, softboxes and umbrellas of different shapes and sizes. There are spotlights and ring flashes. And there are extreme light shaping tools such as the ProBox, the ProGlobe, the Hardbox and our giant reflectors, measuring 5, 7 or 8 feet, used when nothing else would do.
Secure and reliable generators

The generators are the engines driving the light. There, too, we have a wide range of products, from the ComPact 300, for enthusiasts and small studios, to the heavy-duty Pro-7, more or less the world standard in fashion photography and rental studios. In between, we have the battery-powered Pro-7b, the lean Acute2 and last but not least one of the most advanced flash generators in the world, the Profoto D4. Modern power packs combine fine electronics and high currents. That puts extra demand on the design to keep the generators both safe and reliable. Profotos products are built to withstand long periods of hard use, in difficult environments, without any trouble.
Quality colours in the palette
Every Profoto light shaping tool is developed for a certain effect or area of use. And we always endevour to keep the quality very high in terms of smoothness, gradations, patterns, colours, etc. Our tools should then be seen as perfect colours in the palette. But the one mixing them, and creating that personal light, is always the photographer.
Feedback to know what you're doing
Every piece of Profoto equipment is design for extreme ease of use. Every single grip, button, knob and handle is simple and sturdy. There should never be any handling problems. The same goes for the generators. Today, the challenge is to keep them simple and self-explanatory, even though they are filled to the brim with advanced features. We believe we have succeeded. The basic design principle of our generators says that the users should always be given feedback in three ways: by seeing, by feeling and by hearing. When turning a knob, for instance, you both hear and feel the click, as well as having the result presented visually, on a display or in printed numbers. There must never be any doubt.
Profotos unique zoomable lamp heads give the photographer even more freedom. No matter what generator or light shaping tool used, the light shaper can always be moved backwards or forwards on the head, for a corresponding change in the lighting effect. The range of variation, even for a single light shaper, becomes practically limitless. www.profoto.com

Stable light key to efficient production

www.profoto.com

The D4 difference. When the energy level decreases, a traditional generator (lower row) tends to produce a warmer light. Whereas the Profoto D4 (upper row) keeps the variations well within 1/10 of an f-stop. Note also that the D4 can be set to a lower energy ouput than a traditional generator - an important feature for the digital photographer.
Most photographers have experienced problems with a lighting that varies in power or colour temperature between subsequent exposures - even though it's supposed to be constant. Inside the new Profoto D4, a revolutionary technology is used to achieve a near one
The reason is that the typical digital sensor needs less light than film. This leads to a large decrease in the light output from the Generator, which has traditionally given significant colour variations but not with the Profoto D4. See the charts for comparison.

Dont forget the web!

On our web site youll find every possible kind of product information, including technical specifications as well as easy-to-follow stories on how our products can and should be used. In addition, there are manuals and tools for finding your nearest reseller, rental studio or service site. Last but not least: the web site is the best starting place for getting in touch with Profoto, for whatever reason.

Down to 1/10 f-stop

The extreme stability of the D4 depends on a new technology, called Hybrid Flash, that uses a combination of capacitor groups, voltage variation, and advanced microprocessors that regulate and finetune the electronics. The result is a generator with power variations of less than 1/100 - yes, one hundreth! - of an f-stop. For the advanced digital photographer, who is combining multiple exposures with different lighting in the same image, the stability of the D4 is an absolute necessity, not just a productivity booster. The idea is to shape the light on parts of the subject(s), one at a time, and then put the pieces together in the computer. Then the colour temperature has to stay exactly the same for obvious reasons.
hundred percent colour stable light outpout, independent of the number of lamp heads attached or the energy levels used. And, yes, it works with all four of the D4s asymmetrical outlets, adjustable over 8 full f-stops, in increments of 1/10 stop. Colour temperature stability is very important in digital photography.
