ETON VIPER 7OMPER 90k n ~ Vipers~ ~ ~ m r m
Taiwanese manufacturer Ji-lee has been producing youth A n J s for quite a few years, and is known as one of the first Taiwanese companies to export An's to the U.S. It is now marketing its youth-oriented ATVs to the U.S. through its American subsidiary, Eton America LLC. Eton's Viper has been out for a few years now and has gained a reputation as a reliable and fun machine. Eton has covered all the bases in the youth segment with this ATV, which fits CPSC regulations for just about every age. For'05 Eton added the 90R to its series of Viper mini quads, which include 40cc, SOcc, 70cc, 90cc and 150cc versions. We were happy to get our hands on the Eton'sViper 90R and its little brother the 70, and we had twonveteran" young test riders, Brad (12) and Jeremy (6), ready to put them through their paces.
riding AT%!). After a while, however, the procedure does become somewhat of a nuiBY MIKEVANSCOYK sance. The switch is a llttle too accessible and can be accidentally hit or bumped, I you're hoping t h e " R in 90R stands f which will kill the engine. The 90R comes equipped with an for1'Race" like we did, then you're out of luck. It stands for "Reverse", which is audible Reverse buzzer, which gives others almost a necessity on a youth sport quad a warning about which direction theViper this size if the child rider is expected to turn is traveling. The shift from forward to himself around on the trail. The transmisreverse through neutral is seamless; there's sion can be shifted by simply flipping a 1 no loud clunk or slight jump like that switch from F past I to R w h l e holding the V found on the quads of some other manuleft brake lever; children can easily see what facturers we've tested. The Viper 70 is not equipped with direction the transmission has shifted into using the dash lights in the front plastic. reverse but is suitable for riders six to directly ahead of the handlebars. The 90R years of age, while the 90R is recommended must be in neutral to start, and its engine at for children 12 and over. The actual sue difidle with the brakes on before you can shift ference in both quads seems to be due to diffrom Neutral to Forward or Reverse; if you 1 ferent-sized tires; the frames look identical.
don't, the engine will stall. 14Te're not sure if we like this feature or not. It will definitely involve a little extra thought on the child's part to make sure he's doing everything right (actually, maybe it's not that bad a thing to have them paying attention when

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The quads in theviper line share many of the same basic components, including I / the oil-injection two-stroke engines that are coupled to beginner-friendly CVT
transmissions. The 90R (82.5~~) the has advantage in the displacement category, but the 70 (68cc) has a higher compression ratio (8.3:l) and less weight. Both share identical 18mm round slide carburetors that are equipped with manual chokes, which function much better than the electric chokes Eton was using in the past. We were surprised to find out the 70 is just about as fast as the 90R in a drag race on level ground with equal riders.

BRAKES/CONTROLS/ERGOS

Both Vipers are equipped with mechanical drum brakes up front, which stop the wheels easily and are controlled via dual cables. The brake lever is an appropriate size for children, is easy to actuate and will not fatigue a young rider prematurely. The rear hydraulic disc brake works flawlessly and was used most of the time by our test riders, who preferred it to the front setup. A single master cylinder on the left handlebar is piped to the rear caliper; there is no foot brake, which would clutter up the full floorboards and integrated footpegs. The padded handlebars have a 28.5inch spread and the sweep seems to agree with our test riders. Seat height of theviper 90R is 26.3 inches, and the smallerViper 70 comes in at 25.5 inches.

TEST RIDE

Both test riders l i e d these Vipers' surefooted feel and the aggressive power they could unleash while snaking through
the deep woods. The Mamis tires on both were well selected; they were sized perfectly for trail action and helped to soak up what the two inches of front suspension travel could not. What the front suspension lacks in travel, however, it makes up for in function; it actually works really well for only having two inches of travel. Rear suspension offers a full six inches of travel, a bit more than most other youth ATVs. However, its advantages are somewhat negated by the miniscule front travel of only two inches. Part of our test trail consisted of a small jump with a flat landing, and after a

couple runs both test riders agreed that the 70 and 90R have decent suspensions regardless of the limitations of the front travel. ln fact, both said that the suspension was among the best of the youth ATVs they had tested last year Moderate hill climbs

are no problem for either Viper, due to the CVT transmission always being in the meat of the power band. Acceleration is topnotch and as good or better than any other show-room stock youth ATV out there. These two youth quads have really gotten to us, and we wouldn't mind keeping them in our ATV stable for a few more articles! We really like the looks of thesevipers, too. With sporty lines and swept-back fenders, they look just as fast as they run. Eton has proven to our satisfaction that its mini ATVs are among the best on the market. If you're looking to purchase a youth-oriented ATV, this is one line you should definitely consider.
