Introduction

Thank you for selecting our speakers as part of your highfidelity system. We at KENWOOD are confident that your choice will bring you years of rich listening pleasure. Please take the time to read through this booklet carefully. It will help you to obtain the peak performance for which the speakers were designed.

Installation

The Subwoofer is a virtually omnidirectional speaker, so it can be installed in almost any location. For example, the Subwoofer can be installed next to the component system (consisting of an amplifier, tuner, cassette deck, etc.), or in a corner of the room, etc. The subwoofers deep-bass reproduction characteristics are richest when the subwoofer is installed in a corner or near a wall. Since the low-bass component in music is usually monaural, only one subwoofer is necessary to obtain a sufficient stereo effect when used in combination with a stereo music system.

For your records

Record the serial number, found on the back of the unit, in the spaces designated on the warranty card, and in the space provided below. Refer to these model and serial numbers whenever you call upon your KENWOOD dealer for information or service on this product. SW-40HT Serial number

Unpacking
Unpack the unit carefully and make sure that all accessories are put aside so they will not be lost. Examine the unit for any possibility of shipping damage. If your unit is damaged or fails to operate, notify your dealer immediately. If your unit was shipped to you directly, notify the shipping company without delay. Only the consignee (the person or company receiving the unit) can file a claim against the carrier for shipping damage. We recommend that you retain the original carton and packing materials for use should you transport or ship the unit in the future. Keep this manual handy for future reference.

*Use to adapt the plug on the power cord to the shape of the wall outlet. (Accessory only for regions where use is necessary.) To assure ventilation, observe the following points when installing the unit. Leave a distance of more than 10 cm between the Subwoofer back and the surrounding wall(s). Use special care not to cover the heat sink with a curtain, etc. when installing. Do not place the equipment onto a bed, a sofa, a carpet, or similar. Sucked-in dust can cause fire. Be sure to install the Subwoofer vertically.

Connections
If your amplifier or receiver outputs only the L/R separated, line-level signals, it is required to use an adapter for synthesizing the L and R signals (not provided) in order to connect the Subwoofer to such an amplifier or receiver. In case an associated system component is connected, also read the instruction manual of the component. Be sure to insert all connection cords securely. If their connections are imperfect, the sound may not be produced or noise may interfere.

Howling

If the Subwoofer is installed near an analog record turntable, a howling sound may be generated. If this occurs, place the Subwoofer farther away from the turntable or reduce the Subwoofer volume (By rotating the VOLUME control counterclock-wise). The howling phenomenon may also occur due to cross interference with a cassette deck, compact disc player, or Laserdisc player, although this is very rare. If sound or picture seems to be distorted due to this reason, place the Subwoofer farther away from other components or reduce its volume.

CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS

Do not connect the power cord plug into the power outlet until all other connections are complete. Before unplugging a cord or cable from the unit, be always sure to set the POWER switch to OFF and unplug the power plug from the power outlet.

Operation near a TV

If the Subwoofer is installed near a TV set, the TV reception may be affected and interfered with color irregularities. Should color irregularities observed on TV screen, separate the Subwoofer from the TV until its reception becomes normal.

AV Control Centre

Far More Thrills and Excitement, the Easy Way
Move light-years ahead in home cinema entertainment as Kenwoods AV Control Centre (AVCC) models can easily and quickly connect and control external devices. Connect Kenwood AVCC with Blu-ray TM and HDTV through HDMI allows multi-channel or HD Audio enjoyment.

All the excitement of cinema viewing
Blu-rayTM: Bringing real cinema to your home
Blu-rayTM DVDs provide full HD video resolution and uncompressed surround-sound audio for a superlative viewing and listening experience. The KRF-series AVCC models are capable of receiving the Blu-rayTM HD Audio and video signals from the HDMI cable and decoding HD Audio signals such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD Master Audio via the 7-channel amplifier. This makes it truly easy to enjoy the powerful high-definition sound quality that Blu-rayTM DVDs have to offer.
Music purer and more dynamic than ever before
Multi-channel audio and much more
The superb audio features available on the new AVCC line-up are just as exciting as its video functions. With the arrival of Blu-rayTM discs, new HD Audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD Resolution Audio were introduced. Each format is an advanced multi-channel audio codec, and each can be decoded on the new AVCC models via the 7-channel amplifier. For those who want to experience dynamic 5.1-channel surround sound from just two speakers, the KRF-V9300D and KRF-V8300D feature Dolby Virtual Speaker and Dolby Headphone that simulate a realistic surround-sound environment.
Complementing any and all lifestyles
HDMI enhanced sound, easier connection
Most of the AVCC models feature an HDMI interface with C.E.C. (Consumer Electronics Control) compatibility that transmits uncompressed digital audio and video signals via a single cable. By connecting HDMI compatible external devices to the AVCC, power on/off and other functions can be controlled with the AVCC remote controller. The HDMI interface connection to the AV Control Centre ensures the optimum reproduction of HD Audio sound provided by Blu-rayTM DVDs.

Converting analogue input signals for output as digital signals
Many analogue video sources (composite, S-video or component quality, etc.) are still available that require cumbersome cabling but these AVCC models can convert original analogue video signals to a higher format for easier connection to TV output. The KRFV9300D can convert composite signals up to digital for HDMI transmission to the TV, whereas the KRF-V8300D transmits HDMI as HDMI or converts composite up to component.

KRF-V9300D:

From composite to HDMI
Pure Audio Mode 2 and Linear TRAIT
The AVCC models feature superlative audio technologies that guarantee the highest fidelity. For example, the Pure Audio Mode 2 incorporates the following two technologies to ensure improved sound with rich bass: 1) The Straight Decode function that automatically selects the best listening mode to reproduce signals closer to the original format; and 2) The Linear TRAIT, a discrete amplifier circuit with power IC, heightens response speed to deliver a natural sound with rich bass.

HDMI Repeater

Signals are sent via the HDMI cable to the AVCC, which are then separated into audio and video signals through an HDMI Repeater. The audio signal is enhanced with DSP to improve sound reproduction and the video signal is sent to the monitor via the HDMI cable.

More convenience, more enjoyment
The new AVCC models offer an exceptional range of convenient features to make any video viewing and music listening occasion more enjoyable. For example, the optional PNC-iP120 iPod cable can be used to connect the AVCC with an iPod for full control of a private collection of music or video, Auto Room EQ creates an optimum listening environment for the room, and the Lip Sync audio-delaying function slows down audible sound to ensure clearer audio reproduction.
Up-scaling SD to HD video format
Because many TV broadcasting signals and VCR video sources are still in the SD (standard definition) format with a lower resolution compared to HD, these signals must first be up-scaled to display on the higher resolution of HDTVs. The KRF-V9300D is fully capable of up-scaling the SD signal to HD, which is then transmitted to an HDTV via the HDMI interface.
