Excellent audio solution. Fortunately the Acoustic Solutions sp 101stero amplifier can be found at Argos and elsewhere at a very reasonable price. I bought this amp from Argos primarily to plug into my computer allowing me to listen to saved music at much better volumes and higher quality.

Purchased Sp 101 a few years back as I needed to set-up a second-room budget system but did want something half-decent. Have to say.

from the editor:

A big welcome to all our readers who are reading this article at the Facilities Show today. You can find us at stand number D34 so please do pop by and say hello if you are passing through. This issues leader column sees a BIFM board member throw in the towel and there is news of two FM related companies making the UK 50 Best Workplaces list. Nine facilities companies have also been included in the Top 100 Companies That Count list and we also report on a hat trick of contract wins. Starting with the resignation, I was shocked to hear that Michael Glass has resigned from the BIFM Board. According to BIFM he will remain on the Members Council and as Chair of the Midlands Region. Glass joined the BIFM Board in December 2006 but was suspended in March of this year after concerns over code of conduct. To date there has still not been any outcome from the disciplinary proceedings. Elsewhere, I was surprised to find a smattering of FM companies making it onto listings sponsored by two prestigious newspapers. Professional services company KPMG and building consultant Faber Maunsell both made it into the Great Place to Work Institutes UKs 50 Best Workplaces list for 2007. The report is published in the Financial Times each year and highlights what it is that makes each company in the UK Top 50 a great workplace. Each list is compiled after surveying employees about the level of trust and quality of relationships that exist between themselves and management. Nine facilities companies were also included in this years Top 100 Companies That Count list. The list, produced by Business in the Community in association with the Sunday Times, recognises high standards of corporate responsibility. Two firms in the facilities sector got Gold ratings, namely Carillion and Serco. Alfred McAlpine, AMEC, Amey, WS Atkins and Sodexho were all rated Silver. MITIE and Rentokil Initial clinched Bronze awards. Well done boys! Awards aside, this month saw three lucrative contracts making the news pages. BAM PPP reached financial close on Solihull Councils 83m Building Schools for the Future project. The constructions is valued at 83m for three PFI schools and a design and build school. International computer company Fujitsu also announced it has selected GSH Group to maintain its northern property portfolio. The five-year contract win was awarded this month with a go-live date scheduled for 1st June. Dalkia also announced it has landed a new 15-year contract with Heinz Frozen and Chilled Foods. This is an extension of an existing 12-year deal where Dalkia will upgrade and support the energy plant at the site in Westwick.

GSH Drives Green

SH Group has brought the Genvironmentally-friendlynew meaning tobeingterm racing green now that its company cars are swapped for vehicles. As part of its on-going commitment to reducing carbon emissions for itself and its clients, facilities and energy management specialist GSH Group has begun to change its fleet of cars to hybrid models. Working with prestige company car supplier Lexus, GSH has determined it will lead by example and its chief officers and directors have been first in line to trade their gas-guzzlers for the more environmentally-friendly hybrid range. GSH Chief Executive Officer Colin Tennent said: We recognise the importance of adopting eco-alternatives wherever possible. Our business is built on innovation and we have been able to use our own technologies to help clients save money on energy use and carbon output. In the same way, we want to apply that same commonsense approach to our own behaviours so it was a given we would look for green technologies we could use in-house. In this case, we immediately looked at our cars and we were pleased to work with Lexus to identify suitable vehicles to meet our exacting energy and travel needs. He added: We have put some considerable investment into the vehicle change-over but we know the outcome is invaluable to the climate. Lexus Director Steve Settle described the move by GSH to introduce hybrid vehicles into its fleet as very progressive. RR No: 102131

Safety system gets green light at Lanes
introduced The Lanes Group hasWorks Risk a brand new Point of Assessment, thanks to a combined effort between H&S manager, John Glover, and Operations Director Alan Wallis. Its a small leap for Lanes, but a massive leap for safety, says John, who redesigned the system to be more user-friendly for staff on the front line: The old risk assessment was convoluted and difficult to use there were too many grey areas. The new system is a straightforward traffic light checklist which will be used by all the Lanes companies, including Lanes for Drains, the UKs largest independent drains specialist. Its simple: if its red, the jobs dead, says John. Yellow means its time to stop, reassess and put the relevant equipment in place before you carry on, and green obviously is for all systems go. Is gypsum fibre board the ideal material for office refurbishment?
Andy Richardson, technical executive with Xella Dry Lining Systems manufacturers of the Fermacell dry lining board - outlines why gypsum fibre board is the ideal material for many office maintenance and refurbishment projects.
hen comes to selecting a Wfloor itinsulation boards, many material for internal wall, ceiling and builders and Facilities managers have traditionally opted for the product they are most familiar with, which is likely to be plasterboard. However, things are changing. Whilst acknowledging that this particular material can be installed quickly and the initial cost of the material is far cheaper, the advantages of the high density gypsum fibre board make it very competitive and a far better option. There is a strong argument for utilising only high performance products, which will prolong the life of the building or structure. In many instances, it is true to say that maintenance and refurbishment could have been kept to a minimum or not have been required until many years later had the best materials available been specified and used at the new-build stage. Gypsum, fibre board sits firms among those best materials available and is a viable alternative to traditional plasterboard partitioning. Among its major advantages is the ability to repair damaged sections while any problems with relatively small areas of plasterboard will typically result in the need for the whole length of board to be replaced a costly and time consuming procedure. With high density board a simple repair may be possible, thereby drastically cutting down the amount of time that trades need to be on site. In fact, given the strength of the board, it is quite likely the damage would not have been sustained in the first place. Gypsum fibre board is inherently stronger than conventional plasterboard. Allied to this strength are its fine acoustic properties, and also its resistance to fire, impact and moisture. The strength comes from its gypsum matrix, which is reinforced with cellulose fibres and, because of its higher density, is far more effective in reducing sound transmission. It provides facilities managers with a number of additional benefits over plasterboard for not only is it simple to install although the technique is slightly different from plasterboard it does not need a wet plaster skim to produce a suitable surface for painting. Clearly, the reduction in the need for wet trades not having to skim and wait a couple of days for the plaster to dry out can reduce the overall project cost as less skilled labour will be required on site, or at least for much less time. Waiting time is one of the big bug-bears for the industry, so cutting out the need for plastering is a major boon. Gypsum fibre board is ideally suited for refurbishment work that needs to be carried out at night theres no need to wait for drying times so the building can often be used the very next day. Obvious examples of this include retail premises, schools, colleges, and airports as well as busy offices. The use of gypsum fibre board can help the contractor to significantly pull back lost time on the construction programme brought about by unforeseen on-site delays early on, This is achieved by installing board and studwork, instead of blockwork and plastering for the majority of internal partitions. Whilst more care undoubtedly needs to be taken cutting gypsum fibre board as its not being hidden behind a skim, the use of such material will help to de-skill the project. Common sense still needs to be applied! Gypsum fibre board is strong enough to support radiators, cupboards and shelves without the need for additional re-inforcements, therefore installers dont need to think about secondary support. The dry screed option is ideal for todays offices equipped with under floor heating since no wet screeds are required it can be installed very quickly and simply without waiting time before the floor is laid. Gypsum fibre board is so strong that it can resist impacts, point loads up to 2.5kN and, because it also has a low thermal mass, is effectively transparent to heat, making the system very quick to respond. Compared to other dry overlay materials such as chipboard, it provides much better soundproofing, providing an effective barrier to both airborne and impact sound. This makes it ideal for board rooms, and meeting and conference suites. Given all its advantages over plasterboard, and potential overall cost-savings on projects, it is not surprising that gypsum fibre board is being increasingly specified by architects and why builders having used it and facilities managers having experienced its benefits become converts.

Grundfos deliver at Tesco
ith 3,000 stores and 450,000 employees, Tesco are one of the most recognised brands today not just in the UK but also on an increasingly global scale. The logistics of getting chilled, frozen and dry produce into individual stores to meet the local demands requires a significant amount of planning. As part of their overall strategy, as well as to reduce their carbon footprint, a new distribution centre is being opened in Livingston. The 51.5-hectare site will house the 85,000 square metre centre as well as a separate recycling unit. Grundfos Pumps have supplied
two packaged pump sets that will be at the heart of the M+E solution, ensuring that optimal conditions are maintained, which is particularly critical where fresh produce is involved. Delivering this solution are two Grundfos Hydro 2000 MS CRi pump sets that will ensure the system provides the constant pressure it requires, in an energy effective way. The new distribution centre will generate a much-needed 1400 jobs at this former NEC factory site. The environment will also be a winner as Tesco estimates that by establishing itself in Livingston, its delivery mileage will be 77,000 less each week. Another winner will be the local Scottish suppliers who will be able to connect with the centre and become a part of the supply chain. Reader Reply No: 102060

Simmtronic introduces new intelligent switchplates
Simmtronic has introduced to its SPECS3 lighting control system a successor to the popular SPK8 switchplate. The new and enhanced SPK.9 addressable wall mounted switchplate has been developed as an intelligent replacement for conventional light switches. Each press button is individually configurable to select or cycle between lighting scenes with adjustable fade rates and chosen buttons can also be used to control selected zones, again with multi-channel scene setting. Connected using the twisted pair SPECS3 E-Bus for both power and communication, two or more plates can be locally looped together on E-Bus so there need only be a single twisted pair cable to connect even the largest switchplate. Simmtronics proprietary SPECS3 Manager graphical software can uniquely address, identify and continuously display the status of each SPK.9 on the system and offers a remote control facility.
