How to connect the T39/R520 and the H3870/BT jacket to GPRS

Background:

This document describes how to connect an Ericsson T39/R520 to iPAQ H3870/H3880 or any other iPAQ with the Bluetooth jacket. With this configuration you will be able to connect the Internet using BT as carrier between the devices, and GPRS as connection to the Internet. This setup can easily be modified to use a GSM network instead of the GPRS. By using VPN you can access a corporate intranet with this configuration as long as the carrier supports VPN over GPRS.

Prerequisite:

Hardware: iPAQ H3870/H3880 or iPAQ with BT jacket, Ericsson T39/R520, GPRS subscription Software: Bluetooth manager Versions of Firmware/Software used: PVT2 iPAQ 3880 with rom version 1.14. Bluetooth manager 1.0.2. T39 with software release R2M.
Installation guide: 1. Install Bluetooth manager from the iPAQ CD via activesync. You should also check whether there is a later version of the driver on the Compaq web site. http://www.compaq.com/support/files/handhelds/us/index.html
2. Open the BT manager in the right lower corner of the today screen.
3. Make sure the that Bluetooth is turned on under Extras\Bluetooth\operation mode
4. Choose menu Extras on the T39 \Bluetooth\discoverable
5. Press search on the iPAQ. Click the check box. Press save then ok in the upper left corner.
6. Click on the T39 device name in the BT manager. All the available services will be presented under the actions menu.
7. On the T39 press menu extras and Bluetooth\Paired devices\add device\phone accepts. Then go to the next step. 8. On the iPAQ press action menu and create bond with the device.
9. On the iPAQ enter a Pin code for example 1234 and press OK.
10. Press yes on add to paired device? and enter the PIN. Then name the device on the T39 and press yes. Click OK on the upper right corner then go to next step.
11. On the iPAQ go to menu setting\connections\connections. Choose dialing locations and then dialing patterns. Set G as dialing pattern on all three areas. Press OK and then connections. Click on the drop down list on the top. Choose Internet settings then press modify.
12. Choose new then rename the connection. Choose BT Dial-up modem press next. 13. Enter *99# as phone number with no area code or country code. If you need to enter an APN phone number for the network you should use *99***APN number#. If you need to enter an APN enter that under the next setting Extra dial-string modem commands for example +cgdcont=1,"IP","INTERNET. Where INTERNET is the APN.
14. Go to today screen press BT manager and click the T39. After the iPAQ retrieved all services press actions and then press set as internet dial up connections. 15. Choose the connection you have made.
16. Start PocketIE. 17. Enter a web URL and press the green arrow
18. Leave the password and press save password then Ok. You only have to do this once.
19. Press Hide. 20. To end session click the two arrows on the top of the PocketIE window and press End. 21. To make a new GPRS connection complete step 16 to 20. If it doesnt work make sure your settings under connection\connections are configured correctly (see figure under step 11).
