GN Ellipse Standard
- flexibility & long range mobility
When you are on the phone there is no reason why you should be limited to only move within the length of a cord. In other words, you should feel as comfortable as in a normal face-to-face conversation. The GN Ellipse Standard is a well-established cordless product that has proved its performance and high quality in the professional working environment. The GN Ellipse is designed for people who wish to take the next step after handsfree use of their telephones. Simply install the base unit beside the phone and keep your lightweight remote unit connected to the headset. Now youre ready to have a conversation up to 150 meters from your desk. Not only can you leave your desk to retrieve information without hanging up, you can even answer calls when you are far away from
your desk (with the optional Hook Switch). When IP connectivity is required, the optional GN SeleCT allows you to switch between your PC and telephone. GN Netcom has chosen the 1.8 GHz DECT technology for the GN Ellipse family, because it is superior to any other cordless technology, providing enhanced quality of speech, longer range, and increased number of simultaneous users. The GN Ellipse Standard can be connected to all of the most commonly used telephones and telephone systems. And for even greater flexibility, any GN Netcom headset can be used with the GN Ellipse Standard.

Assembling the GN Ellipse 1 Disconnect handset cord from telephone and connect it to socket marked 0 at the bottom of base unit (A). Connect cord with modular plugs (G) to handset socket marked 0 on the telephone and to socket marked 1 at the bottom of the base unit. Connect power unit adaptor (E) to socket marked 2 at the bottom of base unit, and then to a power socket. Switch on power. 2 Mount base unit on stand (D) by turning clockwise until secure. The three cords can extend from the front or back of the base unit as you wish. Mount the headset stand (B) on top of the base unit. 3 Insert battery (F) at rear of remote unit (C) by sliding into place until it clicks. 4 Connect headset to bottom of remote unit using the Quick-Disconnect connector. 5 Insert remote unit into base unit. Both sides of base unit can be used. The battery charging indicator (IV) on base unit will light up. This side will be referred to as the front of the base unit. Before setting up GN Ellipse to your telephone 6 The battery for the remote unit is not charged when delivered. Place remote unit with battery in base unit for at least 1 hour before making the adjustments below. It takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery. Note: If your telephone has volume control, set the volume in the middle position. Checking the system 7 Switch on the headset connection by pressing the link button (VIII) on the remote unit. The on-line indicator (III) on front of base unit will light up and the on-line indicator (V) on top of remote unit starts flashing. The system is now working. If the lights are off, the system is in handset mode. Press the link button (VIII) once to switch to headset mode. If the online indicator does not flash, recheck assembly from Step 1. Setting up GN Ellipse to your telephone Do not use the Link button during the set-up. Lift of the handset manually (or, if available on your telephone, press the headset button). Put on your headset. Lift the handset of the telephone manually (or, if available on your telephone, press the headset button) and listen for a dial tone in your headset. If there is no dial tone, adjust the telephone termination switch (II) at the rear of base unit. Move from A to G until the dial tone is clear. If the dial tone is just as clear in position A as in G, leave switch in position A. Put on your headset. Lift the handset of the telephone manually (or, if available on your telephone, press the headset button) and listen for a dial tone in your headset. Call someone and ask the person to help you evaluate the volume of your voice. Adjust the microphone volume control (I) from 1 to 8 by talking in the headset in each position. When the person you are talking to finds the sound level good, you have the correct setting. If the best setting is 7 or 8, you may have to move the telephone termination switch (A-G) to G.
Functions on the remote unit Adjusting the volume 14 To turn up or reduce volume in your headset, press successively towards + or on the volume control (VI) on the remote unit. When the volume reaches maximum or minimum, you will hear a signal in your headset (see Technical Data).
Muting the microphone 15 To talk without your caller hearing you, press the mute button (VII) on the remote unit. You are still able to hear your caller. When the microphone is muted, you will hear a signal every 15 seconds in your headset (see Technical Data). Answering calls with the remote unit 16 When you are not at your desk, you can answer incoming calls with the remote unit, if you have installed the Hook Switch supplied by GN Netcom A/S on your telephone. 17 When you receive an incoming call, the remote unit will buzz and the Hook Switch sends a ring tone to your headset (see Technical Data). Press the red link button (VIII) on the remote unit. The Hook Switch will lift the handset from your telephone and connect your call. To hang up, press the link button (VIII) again. Headset/handset switch 18 You can switch between headset and handset by pressing the link button (VIII) on the remote unit. The on-line indicators (III and V) will light up when the system is in headset mode and turn off when in handset mode. Adjusting the buzzer setting 19 You can choose between four different buzzer settings: Max volume Medium volume Minimum volume Buzzer muted To adjust the buzzer, the system must be in handset mode. (see step 18) Press simultaneously the upper and lower part of the volume button (VI) and the mute button (VII) at the same time to enter buzzer setting mode. The on-line indicator on the remote unit will light up. Press the upper or lower part of the volume button (VI) to go trough the four available buzzer settings. To leave the buzzer setting mode, stop pressing the buttons when the desired setting has been reached. Within 5 seconds, the setting will be stored and the on-line indicator will switch off. Making or receiving calls with the GN Ellipse To fully experience the freedom of a cordless headset, remove the remote unit from the base unit and clip it to your belt or put it in your pocket. You can now move freely up to 150 meters away from the base unit, depending on the environment in your office building. If you move out of transmission range, GN Ellipse lets you know by means of a signal every 10 seconds in your headset (see Technical Data). Using GN Ellipse Follow this instruction if you do not have a Hook Switch. Put on your headset. Make sure that you have a connection between the remote and the base unit. The on-line indicator (V) on the remote unit is flashing. (see Technical Data). If the on-line indicator is not flashing, press the link button (VIII). Pick up the handset (or, if available on your telephone, press the headset button) to get a dial tone or answer a call. If you wish to make a call, dial the desired number. To end the call, put down the handset (or, if available on your telephone, press the release button). To make or accept further calls, you just have to pick up the handset and wait for a dial tone or answer a call. Alternatively, if you wish to silence your headset completely between calls, press the link button (VIII) after a call is ended and press it again to re-establish link before answering or making calls.
Using GN Ellipse and a Hook Switch Put on your headset. Answer the call or wait for dial tone by pressing the link button (VIII) on the remote unit. If you wish to make a call, dial the desired number. To end the call, press the link button (VIII) on the remote unit. Charging the battery 20 When the GN Ellipse is not in use, place the remote unit in the base. This ensures optimum battery lifetime. When placed in the base unit, the battery charging indicator (IV) automatically lights up and the remote unit is being charged. It takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery. If you use GN Ellipse in between, charging takes longer. A fully charged battery provides up to 12 hours of talktime. With an extra battery placed on the other side of the base unit, it is possible to double the talktime up to 24 hours. If battery power gets too low, GN Ellipse lets you know by sending a series of signals every 20 seconds in your headset (see Technical Data). Battery discharge To ensure optimum battery lifetime, the battery should be completely discharged regularly. A discharge/recharge cycle will take app. 2 hours. When fully discharged, the battery will automatically be recharged. If the remote unit is removed from the base unit during the discharge, this will automatically be cancelled and the system will resume normal operation. 21 Place remote unit in the base unit. The GN Ellipse must be on handset mode (on-line indicator (V) on the remote unit is off) 22 Press and hold both the mute button and link button (VIII) for 5 seconds to start the discharge. When the battery is discharging, the on-line indicator (III) and the battery charging indicator (IV) will flash alternately. NOTE: Only one battery can be placed in the base unit when discharging. Furthermore, the battery must be placed in the base unit before the battery discharge mode is entered by pressing the mute and link button (VIII). Troubleshooting If you do not get a dial tone: Check that all cords and jacks are connected correctly. Make sure that the Quick-Disconnector is fully inserted in the remote unit. Make sure that the power unit adaptor is plugged in and has power. Make sure that the link has been established and that the on-line indicators are lit up. Make sure that the battery is properly installed in the remote unit. Make sure that the battery is fully charged. Make sure that the serial numbers in the bottom of the base unit and on the back of the remote unit match. The numbers must match for operation. If you hear signals in your headset: A signal every 15 seconds means that the mute function is on. A signal every 10 seconds means that you are out of range, move closer to base unit. A signal every 20 seconds means that the battery is getting low and needs to be charged: For proper charge, make sure that the battery charging indicator is lit when the remote unit is placed in base unit. The battery may need up to three charge and discharge cycles to reach full capacity. If callers have problems hearing you: Make sure that the mute function is off (see Step 15 ). Re-adjust the microphone volume as described in Step 11-13. Check the position of the headset microphone and make sure that it is placed at the corner of your mouth. You may be out of range, move closer to the base unit. Noise may be caused, if the base unit is placed too close to your telephone. With an extension cord it is possible to place the GN Ellipse further away from your telephone. Please contact you reseller for further information. 6
