Feedback The Bluetooth adapter works well. It seems to pick up my phone as soon as I get in the truck. Better than Expected Was worried about echoing from previous reviews. I have the blue tooth mounted behind the dash.

ND-BT1/E5 will be connected to the connectable product, and start. Select [Menu] [Settings] [Hardware] [Conection Status].
Make sure on the left screen that the items under Phone Connection Status are indicating [OK]. In this case, because registration of the BT telephone has not been completed, level indication of the antenna bar is not displayed even though the status is indicated as OK. * In the case of NOK, possible case is poor connection between ND-BT1/E5 and navigation product or failure of the wired section of ND-BT1/E5.
Select [Menu] [Info/Phone] [Registration] [Mobile].

[Phone Menu]

[Phone Settings]
Search for the Bluetooth device and enter the passkey by operating the mobile telephone. * In case the device name is not displayed in Bluetooth device search, the possible cause is the failure of the wireless section of ND-BT1/E5.
When the connection with the BT telephone is completed, the screen as shown on the left will be displayed. Antenna bar will be displayed on the [Conection Status] screen. When the connection is successfully established, conduct speech test and check the voice transmission and reception.
- Bluetooth Test Mode (using spectrum analyzer)

1. Cautions

If there is a spectrum analyzer supporting 2.4 GHz at the service site, confirmation of transmission carrier becomes possible. Since ND-BT1/E5 cannot operate singly, the AVIC-HD1/EW5 or AVIC-Z1/UC is required. Carrier existence is checked by removing the product case and applying the probe onto the "ANT" land of the base unit. Since it is done by probe connection, the level cannot be confirmed accurately.

2. Function outline

Simple operation check on Bluetooth is executed in test mode using a spectrum analyzer supporting 2.4 GHz. Output check on Bluetooth unit

AVIC Z1 Safety Bypass

PLEASE NOTE:
These instructions are intended for use by the installer of the Pioneer AVIC Z1 to allow bypassing the Z1 safety interlock. These instructions are provided AS IS. Modification of the AVIC Z1 may void the warranty. The owner of any AVIC Z1 so modified assumes all responsibility for any damages or injury that may occur as a result of these modifications.
For units with a July 06 manufacture date, the Light Flash procedure below may work, but most likely the 07/06 Bypass (found on page 4) will be necessary For units with an August 06 and newer manufacture date; skip to the 07/06 Bypass instructions
Note: Manufacture dates are a good indication of which bypass might work for a particular unit, but are not conclusive. The change happened some time in July 06 as far as we can tell.
Leaked Pioneer Bluetooth Echo Fix CD Information:
An update for the Z1 has been leaked to the internet. This update is an ISO file which can be downloaded and burned to a CD, this CD is then inserted in the Z1 and it will update the Z1's software in an attempt to fix the echo that the caller hears when using the Z1's bluetooth adapter. I have tested this and while it does reduce the echo, it's not eliminated. You can turn up the volume louder without an echo so it is better than before. In my tests, it works about as good as the "original fix". I have been told that by updating an older Z1 it will disable the "flash the headlights" bypass (my circuits will no longer work) and the only way to bypass the Z1 after the update is the 07/06 bypass method (as described below). Here is the update CD if you chose to download it and try it: http://www.sminntech.com/AvicBluetoothFix.zip NOTE:You download and install this AT YOUR OWN RISK. When I tried installing this update CD, my Z1 got to 99% and froze and ended up in a reset loop I could not get out of. Thankfully, I had a backup of my Z1's hard drive. So I was able to restore it (by connecting the Z1's hard drive to my PC and reloading the backups I made previously). I don't know why I had a problem and others have downloaded this same file from me and had none. I ended up finding the file which was not reading off my CD, which happened to be this image. This file is currently installed on every Z1 from Pioneer and is being overwritten by the same image. Why? I don't know, but it's what I had problems with. A detailed thread about this update CD is here. My limited testing of my pre-July 06 Z1 updated with the CD and bypassed with the 07/06 bypass has been successful. Again, you are installing this CD AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The Initial Installation

Perform initial installation of AVIC Z1 per installation manual Pay careful attention to properly connecting the ILL (illumination) wire so the unit will know
when the headlights are switched to the ON position Start the car and proceed to display a navigation screen on the Z1 Turn on the car headlights Does the screen of the Z1 dim and put the navigation screen into night mode? IF NO: the Z1 has not received an indication the headlights are on. Manually flashing the headlights will not work as a safety bypass. Check that the ILL (illumination) wire from the Z1 is connected correctly. Refer to the connecting the power cord section of the installation manual. IF YES: If turning on the lights puts the Z1 navigation screen into night mode, turn the vehicle off (make sure the Z1 shuts down) and continue testing using the following instructions.

Manual Bypass Light Flash Procedure:
Disengage the parking brake (make sure the Parking Brake wire is not permanently grounded)
NOTE: If the "parking brake warning" message is displayed when the vehicle is started, reset the Z1 by using the small recessed button to the right of the Eject/Tilt button on the front panel Turn the ignition key to the ON position (don't bother starting the engine). As soon as the "Starting up Pioneer Car Navigation." text screen is displayed (see Figure 1 below), turn the headlights on then off (about 1 second of on time is perfect)
Figure 1. Starting Screen Example Let the Z1 finish the starting process Continue to Test Safety Interlock Bypass on page 3 2
Test Safety Interlock Bypass
Press the MENU button (if a disclaimer screen is displayed, press OK then press MENU again)
Look for "Address Search" and "POI Search" buttons
Figure 2. Destination Navigation Menu Are the "Address Search" and "POI Search" buttons available or grayed out?
NOTE: In Figure 2 the Route Overview and Cancel Route buttons are grayed out (light grey background) and the other 8 are available (blue background). The screen may not look EXACTLY like the one in Figure 2 but similar buttons should exist. If the bypass has worked, the Address Search and POI Search buttons will be available. If Address Search and POI Search buttons are available and the parking brake is disengaged (or the parking brake sense wire is not even connected) then the AVIC Z1 safety interlock has successfully been bypassed. Consider installing a SMinnTech Z1-FC (http://www.sminntech.com/z1flasher.html) or similar unit to automate the bypass process. If the Z1 has not yet calculated a route, Destination History will be grayed out. If the Go To function hasnt been programmed with a destination, it will be grayed out as well. If the Address Search and POI Search buttons are "grayed out" and the AVIC Z1 has a manufacture date of June 06 or earlier, then most likely the headlights were not flashed correctly (or possibly the parking brake wire is grounded or the AVIC Z1 needs to be reset). As long as the Z1 manufacture date is June 06 or before, the above procedure should work. If the Address Search and POI Search buttons are grayed out and the AVIC Z1s manufacture date is July 06 or later, then most likely the 07/06 Bypass detailed below will be necessary.

07/06 Bypass

Note: For AVIC Z1 units made in July 06, the headlight flashing method above may or may not work. Some July 06 units may work with the headlight flashing method and a flasher circuit can be installed. Others may need the bypass method detailed below. Units manufactured August 06 and after should ONLY use the following bypass method. For newer models, only two wires need be grounded. Wire #1: Ground the light green parking brake sense wire from the Z1. If the light green parking brake sense wire is already connected to your vehicles parking brake switch wire, then disconnect it from the vehicles wiring and then ground it. Do not permanently ground the vehicles parking brake switch wire, just the light green sense wire from the Z1. Wire #2: On the back of the Z1, there are 3 main connectors. As seen from the rear, the connector on the bottom right (closest to the FM antenna plug) is labeled "connector 2". The four right most locations in the wire harness for this connector DO NOT have wires in them. As shown in Figure 3 below, add a wire to the indicated position and ground it as well.

Figure 3. - Ground this pin in "Connector 2"
It is possible to remove the cell phone mute wire from the Connector 1 harness and use it for this purpose. (With the introduction of Bluetooth technology, few installations require the use of the cell phone mute lead any longer.) Use a small flat bladed tool, such as a jewelers screwdriver, to lift the white plastic retainer prong just above the metal retainer that holds the cell phone mute wire in the connector. DO NOT attempt to remove the wire by pushing on the metal retainer itself. Lifting the plastic prong is much easier. Once the wire, and attached metal retainer, is removed from the Connector 1 harness, insert the wire into the indicated pin position on the Connector 2 harness. Ground the new connection and test the Z1 unit for bypass functionality as detailed on page 3. NOTE: The "cell phone mute" wire has nothing to do with the Pioneer ND-BT1 (add-on bluetooth module). This wire is used if you install a 3rd party (non-Pioneer) speaker phone system so that it can interface to the Avic Z1. If you install a non-Pioneer cell phone interface then you will most likely use this wire to mute the Z1. If so, choose another wire. If you use the ND-BT1 you will NOT use this wire and it will be extra for your installation (which makes it an appropriate choice). Another choice is the "guide on" wire which is for turning off an external sound processor when the navigation voice speaks. This is another wire most people won't use in a standard install. It doesn't matter what wire you relocate into this location in Connector 2, just pick one that you don't use in your specific installation.
