10/100Base-TX Link Configuration Introduction
HP J6057A (615N) or J4169A (610N) 10/100Base-TX print servers support 10 or 100 Mbps operation using full-duplex or half-duplex transmission channels. By default, the print server will attempt to autonegotiate its link operation. When connecting to network hubs and switches that do not support autonegotiation, the print server will configure itself for 10-Mbps or 100-Mbps half-duplex operation. For example, when connected to a non-negotiating 10 Mbps hub, the print server card will automatically set itself to operate at 10-Mbps half-duplex. If the card is not able to connect to the network through autonegotiation, you can manually set the link operating mode using one of the following methods:
the printers control panel (if it has one). See Appendix A for more information. the embedded web server running on the Jetdirect print server. accessing the Telnet interface on the Jetdirect print server. using a TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) file downloaded, for example, from a BootP or DHCP server.

Link Troubleshooting
If the HP J6057A/J4169A print server does not successfully connect to the network:
both link speed LEDs (10 and 100) will be off a LOSS OF CARRIER ERROR will be indicated on the Jetdirect Configuration Page. The HP J6057A/J4169A 10/100Base-TX print server may require up to 10 seconds to establish a connection on the network.
3-24 10/100Base-TX Link Configuration
Try the following troubleshooting procedures:
Verify cabling connections. Configure the print servers 10/100TX link setting directly (for example, using the EIO menu on the printers control panel). Verify that the configuration of the connecting network device (such as a network switch) matches. For example, if you set the print server for 100Base-TX Full-Duplex operation, the port on the network switch must also be set to 100Base-TX Full-Duplex operation. Power-cycle the printer to reinitialize the setting. On the Jetdirect Configuration Page, compare your configuration for the following parameters:

Network Configuration Notes Introduction
The HP Jetdirect print server can simultaneously support multiple network communication protocols. This allows network computers that may be using different protocols to communicate with the same printer. Each protocol on the print server may require some configuration before the printer can communicate on the network using that protocol. For some protocols, its easy; as long as the protocol is enabled, required parameters are automatically sensed and user-specified settings are not needed. However, for other protocols, there may be many parameters to configure.
Enabling or Disabling Network Protocols
When you first install the Jetdirect print server from the factory, all supported network protocols are enabled (or turned on) whenever you turn the printer on. If a network protocol is enabled, the card may actively transmit on the network even when there are no computers on the network that use the protocol. This may increase network traffic slightly. To eliminate unnecessary traffic, you can disable unused protocols. Disabling unused protocols lets you:
reduce network traffic by eliminating broadcast messages from unused protocols (for example, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP). provide better control over who prints to the printer by eliminating users from other networks who might accidentally route print jobs to this printer.
eliminate unnecessary information on the Jetdirect Configuration Page, which displays status information for all enabled protocols. display protocol-specific error conditions on the printers control panel. These warning messages are displayed only if all enabled protocols are unable to print.
To Restore Factory Default Values
You can restore the Jetdirect print server to factory default values by performing a cold reset on your printer. See your printer documentation for instructions. (Note: To perform a cold reset on some HP LaserJet printers, turn off the printer and then hold down [Go] as you turn the printer back on.) CAUTION A cold reset of your printer may restore both your printer and Jetdirect print server to their factory default values. (For Jetdirect factory default values, see the applicable HP Jetdirect Administrators Guide supplied electronically on the HP Jetdirect CD-ROM.)
To verify HP Jetdirect default values have been reset, print a Jetdirect configuration page (see Chapter 2).
HP Jetdirect EIO Menu
If your HP EIO printer or multifunction periperhal (MFP) device has a control panel, you can configure basic network parameters through the Jetdirect EIO menu on the printers control panel. Printers with control panel support include: HP LaserJet 4000, 4050, 4100, 5000, 8000, 8100, 8150, 9000 Series EIO printers and MFPs q HP Color LaserJet 4500, 4550, 8500, 8550 Series EIO printers and MFPs q HP Business InkJet 2200/2250 Series EIO printers q HP DesignJet EIO printers

Configuring TCP/IP Parameters
The card must be configured with a valid IP address to operate on a TCP/IP network. If not configured, a default value 192.0.0.192 will be automatically assigned two minutes after the card is turned on. BOOTP (Bootstrap Protocol) or DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) operation depends on the print server model:
615N/610N: You can enable either BOOTP or DHCP. Enabling BOOTP results in BOOTP-only operation, while enabling DHCP results in DHCP-only operation. 600N: Enabling BOOTP allows BOOTP or DHCP operation.
If an IP address is configured through DHCP and is subsequently changed through the control panel, the DHCP assigned address is released. In this case, you should also manually reconfigure other TCP/IP parameters as well (such the subnet mask, default gateway and idle timeout) to ensure a proper configuration.
Configuring Apple EtherTalk Phase Parameters (600N Ethernet Cards Only)
Note For HP J6057A 615N or J4169A 610N print servers, the AppleTalk phase parameter is set to phase 2 and is not configurable.
You can configure Apple EtherTalk parameters if the Apple EtherTalk protocol is enabled, and the PostScript printer language is enabled. To ensure the PostScript printer language is enabled, check the printers configuration. The printer personality should be set to PostScript or Auto.

Introduction 1-3
Network Printing Basics
Networks consist of computers connected together to share information and resources, such as printers. On a client-server network, client computers send print jobs to dedicated server computers that control the use of each printer. On a peer-to-peer network, dedicated servers are not used. Instead, each computer is configured to send print jobs to the printer directly.

Network Printing Configurations
Client-server printing is typically used in medium to large networks where dedicated servers are used to manage printing needs of many users. Client-server networks use network operating systems (NOS) such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Server. Peer-to-peer printing is more suitable for smaller networks. On peer-to-peer networks, users configure their Microsoft Windows 95/98/ NT/2000 systems to print directly to the printer. Note that peer-topeer printing can be configured on a client-server network. For example, a small workgroup might use peer-to-peer printing even though it is connected to an enterprise-wide client-server network. Regardless of the network type (client-server or peer-to-peer), your computers and printers must use a common language, or network protocol to communicate with each other. The most common protocols are IPX (Internet Packet Exchange), made popular by Novell NetWare networks, and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol), made popular by the Internet. The HP JetDirect print server supports these and other popular network protocols.

If you are attaching only one printer to the 500X, HP recommends that you attach that printer to Port 1. If you are using DLC/LLC network protocols, your printer must be connected to Port 1 (the DLC/LLC protocol is supported only on Port 1). 7. Plug the power module into the power receptacle on the print server. 8. Plug the power module into the wall outlet. Since there is no power switch, the print server is switched on after you plug it in. 9. Check the LEDs on the front of print server. The Status LED should be green (steady or blinking). If the internal self-test failed, the Activity LED will be on and the Status LED will be off. For troubleshooting information, see the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrators Guide on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM. 10. Wait about 10 seconds. For 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks, check the 10 and 100 LEDs to verify that the correct one is lit (see page 3-5). 11. Switch on the power on your printer(s) to begin printing.
Installing External Print Servers 3-3
Verifying the Hardware Installation
To verify the installation of the HP JetDirect external printer server, generate a configuration page. This page is generated from Port 1 of the printer server. To generate a configuration page, follow these steps: 1. Print a JetDirect configuration page by pressing and releasing the Test button on the print server. 2. If the configuration page displays the message I/O CARD READY, you have successfully completed the hardware installation. (If not, see the Troubleshooting chapter in the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrators Guide shipped on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM.) Refer to this configuration page when configuring the software. For sample configuration pages, see the Troubleshooting chapter in the HP JetDirect Print Servers Administrators Guide on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM.
Selecting a Configuration Page Language
The configuration page for the HP JetDirect external print server is sent to the printer attached to Port 1. The printer language is autodetected the first time the print server is powered up and after each cold reset. If you want to change the detected printer language, use the LEDs and Test button to select a PDL for the configuration page. When you hold down the Test button for three seconds, the LEDs begin to cycle through four configurations, as outlined in the following table. Release the Test button when you get the right PDLs (Page Description Language), and the configuration page will be printed.

3-6 Installing External Print Servers
Switches (HP JetDirect 300X and 500X)
The HP JetDirect 300Xand 500X Print Servers have configuration switches that should be used only if the print server fails to link on the network. The factory-default setting of all 3 switches down will suit most installations. These switches only apply to 10Base-T and 100Base-TX networks only. When the first switch is set to Auto, the other two switch settings are ignored; the server auto-negotiates the link speed and duplex setting with the connected switch or hub device. Even with devices that dont auto-negotiate, the print server detects the network link speed and uses half duplex. Although usually unnecessary, you can control the settings directly by positioning the switches as shown in the table below, only if you are certain of the duplex setting and speed at which the switch or hub is operating.
If the auto switch And if the speed is set to. switch is set to. AUTO (down) MANUAL (up) MANUAL (up) MANUAL (up) MANUAL (up) either position (default=down) 10 (up) 100 (down) 10 (up) 100 (down) And if the duplex Then the settings switch is set to. are. either position (default=down) HALF (down) HALF (down) FULL (up) FULL (up) Auto-negotiated (factory default) 10Base-T Half-duplex 100Base-TX Half-duplex 10Base-T Full-duplex 100Base-TX Full-duplex
In Auto mode, you can see the network speed by checking the LEDs at the RJ-45 connector (see page 3-5).
Installing External Print Servers 3-7
Once you configure your print server, the configuration settings are retained in memory unless you manually reset them to factory defaults. (The firmware is not affected when you reset the configuration settings.) To reset the print server to factory defaults, follow these steps: 1. Unplug the power cord from the print server. 2. While holding down the Test button on the print server, plug the power module into the print server and continue to hold down the Test button for about five seconds. Any user-configured settings will be erased.
