Colorwheel issues (loud humming sound after 2 years) and Sharp knows about the problem and does nothing. They wont even sell you the color wheel.

Very "Bad" TV Nice TV design ,BUT it starts off with a humming noise, then it gets louder and louder. Do not buy this TV! This TV has color wheel issues. They go bad in 6-12 months. Sharp could care less and they dont help.

Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma Control
Flat panel displays can sometimes be inefficient at reproducing smooth grayscalesespecially
under demanding conditions such as high motion scenes. Therefore, all better panel display employ some form of gamma control so that darker areas dont lack detail and appear muddied. JVCs exclusive Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma Control is a highly sophisticated algorithm that utilizes data from every signal level, and then specifically targets only areas of highly dark image data so that the entire processing power can work in trouble areas alone. This allows Dynamic Gamma Control to concentrate more completely than standard dynamic gamma features that apply the process to the entire picture. Dynamic Gamma Control is always on and always working so that tonal gradations are preserved and darker images never appear muddied on these flat panel displays.
They incorporate Digital Noise Clear Circuitry to enhance the video quality from less than
perfect sources by reducing the video snow found on older videos such as rentals and home movies. It also helps to reduce the snowy lines attributed to poor tracking settings on VCRs.

High Performance Audio

They are equipped with an exclusive sound
5-point Color Management System (CMS)
JVCs exclusive 5-point Coor Management System (CMS) uses a unique pin-point color sampling process that produces image color purity all the time. By applying pin-point sampling to each color range, CMS determines which colors require softening and which require toning down. The process insures that colors are never harsh or muddied but always natural and pure. Point 1 samples greens so they appear bright and not yellowed Point 2 samples yellows so that they never appear harsh or green Point 3 samples reds so they appear fresh and dont take on a bluish cast Point 4 samples blues so they are not muddied by greens Point 5 samples flesh tones so that they always appear warm and natural package so there is no need that includes Oblique Cone Speakers with 20-watts of total audio power, Advanced Hyper Surround, Advanced Hyper Bass and BBE High Definition Audio. Designed with the voice coil off-axis, the Oblique Cone Speakers project sound upwards towards the viewer for better sound dispersion. Advanced Hyper Surround (AHS) creates a 3-dimensional soundfield while using the TVs front speakers. Virtual speakers electronically process stereo audio signals and manipulate the phase relationships and frequency responses for a fuller 3-D effect. Advanced Hyper Bass (AHB) dynamically enhances bass response BBE High Definition Audio makes audio sound natural and clear by compensating for the inevitable phase and amplitude distortions that prevent sound from being its purest in regular TV sound.

LCD fair brightness capability
LCD is a transmissive technology that allows light to pass through liquid crystal microchips to provide image data to the display screen. The main drawback of LCD is that transistors are required on each pixel, and wires must run between each pixel to transmit the image data. Combined, these wires and transistors limit both the total area through which light can pass (limiting brightness)as well as the total area on which pixels can be placed (limiting the megapixel ratio).
DLP reduced brightness capability
Digital Micro-mirror Devices known as DLP employ a reflective technology that uses micro-mirrors on hinges to reflect image data to the display screen. The main drawback of DMD is that a hinge is required on, and a space is required between each pixel to allow the mirrors to move. This space between the pixels and the space occupied by the hinges both limit the total reflective space available per pixel (limiting brightness)as well as the total area on which pixels can be placed (limiting the megapixel ratio).
D-ILA best available brightness capability
HD-ILA employs D-ILA, also a reflective technology, but it utilizes a special form of LCOS pixels which require virtually no space between them. No space between pixels allows D-ILA to yield the highest aperture ratio (reflective area) and therefore the greatest total area for placing mega pixels is maximized. D-ILA further improves upon LCOS by using vertically oriented pixels and by adding an inorganic alignment layer that both stabilizes device performance and maximizes chip production.
The D-ILA AdvantageCustom Features and Superior Technology

The high power

lamp that provides the HD-ILA televisions with their exceptionally bright images boasts a long life span. But, more importantly, unlike other microdisplay types, they are user-replaceable. There is no need for a service technician. When its time to replace the lamp, the turn of a finger screw or two (depending on which model) reveals the lamp housing and the old lamp can be pulled out and replaced with the new one. The unique custom designed lens assembly developed especially for D-ILA devices consists of 13 separate glass components and an aspheric resin coated lens that insures full-time precision focus and low distortion no matter how demanding the scene. A total of 32 layers of anti-reflective coatings on each element minimizes internal reflections and allows for crystal-clear pictures and natural image reproduction. After the light is reflected off each color microchip, it is directed to pass through the polarized beam splitter which can only be described as an amazing combination of custom designed prisms that work in unison to recreate all the colors of the rainbow. Since the colors are all combined simultaneously, the polarized beam splitter minimizes any potential loss of contrast and is able to maintain image uniformity. Because JVC employs D-ILA 3-chip LCOS technology, the image on an HD-ILA will never show a rainbow effect that results from using single chip color wheel technology. Color wheels create images by sending sequential pulses of light that are combined by your eyes and your brain. Usually the process happens so fast you dont notice it. The downside is, if you do notice this, it appears as a flashing rainbow in front of you and you may find it bothersome. By utilizing three chips to simultaneously reflect the light and the polarized beam splitter to combine the colors, your eyes and brain can rest and enjoy. Screen door effect is an inevitable consequence of display technologies that require a space between pixels for moving parts or transistor wires. The effect of having these spaces appear as though you are viewing the images through a screen door, hence the name. Since D-ILA requires virtually no space between pixels, images always appear seamless.

HDTV Reception

Built-in NTSC tuner lets you receive overthe-air analog broadcasts with an external antenna, while their ATSC tuner receives and decodes HDTV and digital broadcasts received from an off-air antenna. A QAM tuner receives and decodes digital broadcast channels from a cable company. HDTV broadcasts offer more detail and better color than analog broadcasts, and it takes a high-resolution display to deliver all that picture information. The high pixel count of these plasma displays provide fine detail for outstanding HDTV reproduction. More pixels also translate into less stair-stepping artifacts; curved and diagonal edges look smooth and natural. View digital programming without a cable box. Via their CableCARD slots they can accept a small card that allows you to receive standard and high definition digital broadcasts. No bulky set-top cable box perfect for a wall-mounted plasma TV.

Horizontal and vertical edge correction sharpens the edges of objects in the picture. Works with the velocity modulated scan to help produce clean, crisp television images.
Motion-Adaptive 3D-Y/C Digital Comb Filter allows display of bright colors and fastmoving scenes with incredible clarity by minimizing the color rainbow effect in closely spaced patterns, compensating for the motion that occurs between fields. Enhanced Progressive Scan Doubler provides even more image enhancement by improving the quality of diagonal lines in a moving picture. With it, you generally dont see the horizontal scan lines that can be visible in ordinary television images. 2-tuner Picture-in-Picture with split-screen display divides the screen in half, so you can view two programs at once. Each is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right. Audio is played from the program on the left. To listen to the audio from the other program simply switch the pictures using the SWAP button. The sets can also display a TV signal and computer data simultaneously, so users can watch TV and surf the Internet at the same time.
HDTV display capability lets you experience images with lifelike detail and clarity when viewing HDTV broadcasts (1080i/720p) and progressive scan DVD players (480p). There is also less stair-stepping artifacts while curved edges look smooth and natural. Wideband video amplifier expands the video signal frequency response to more than 10 MHz, allowing for an incredible horizontal resolution capability.
They are equipped with a CableCARD slot so you can receive standard definition and high definition digital broadcastswithout requiring a bulky set-top cable box. CableCARD is a cable TV standard that incorporates the functions of a traditional cable box into a small device that fits in a slot in your TV. With the use of an authorized Digital Cable Module (CableCARD), you can receive digital cable services, including premium and HDTV cable channels, without the need for a set-top box. Services and the module are supplied by the local cable company.

DLP (Digital Light Processing) TechnologyHigh Contrast, Sharp Details

These advanced models combine Texas Instruments DLP technology with Panasonics digital video expertise for a picture that is just breathtaking. At the heart of DLP technology-based rear projection TV is the DMD, a 0.7-inch optical subconductor chip with over 1.5 million hinged, microscopic mirrors, which operate as optical switches to create a high resolution, full color image. Electrostatic torque is used to adjust the angles of the mirrors, which reflect picture information to help achieve an exceptionally high 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. The DLP optical system produces a bright, high-resolution, high contrast image in a display that is lighter and thinner than conventional CRTbased projection TVs. They also incorporate an 8-segment color-wheel, which helps minimize artifacts to ensure a brilliant picture. The DLP subsystem's Digital Light Processing technology maximizes the benefits of Panasonics state-of-the-art digital image technologies, such as pixel conversion. Panasonic combined these and other original optical technologies, such as a wide-angled diffusion screen panel and a short-focus lens, with the Digital Micromirror Device semiconductor to achieve breathtaking results. Since there is no black area between pixels there is no "screen door" or "honeycomb" effect, which causes visible grid lines on some LCD projector.

T H E T E C H N O LO G Y:
Flat Glass Panel uses advanced glass technology for the structural rigidity a flat screen requires. The industrys first flat CRT, the Flat Glass Panel delivers accurate picture reproduction with a dramatic reduction in glare and image distortion. This design allows also results in wide viewing angles allowing flexible room placement. The Flat Glass Panel is matched by a flat Fine Pitch Aperture Grille which delivers outstanding detail and clarity by decreasing the pitch or distance between the high tension wires The grille also helps to support the picture tube structure. Flat-screen CRTs demand incredible depth-of-focus. To accomplish this, Sony increased the internal focal length of the electron gun by 30%. This improves corner-to-corner focus by 20% without making the overall gun larger. Sony redesigned the deflection yoke so each electron maintain its shape for accurate image reproduction. The High Precision Deflection Yoke (DY) is 30% larger than a conventional Trinitron DY, so whether youre watching broadcast television, surfing the Internet (with an optional WebTV terminal) or enjoying Digital Satellite System programming, the picture is precise from top to bottom, side to side and corner to corner.

Flat Picture Benefits

Picture Detail
Unlike curved screens which distort the shapes of objects in the TV picture, the FD Trinitron flat screen renders everything accurately. For the first time in a big CRT, squares are truly square. Circles appear circular. And all straight lines are actually straight, including vertical, horizontal and diagonal. Since the geometry of all on-screen objects is correct, everything appears more real, more convincing, more lifelike.

Wide Viewing Angle

FD Trinitron provides a wide viewing angle because there is no screen bulge to obscure part of the picture. To really appreciate the FD Trinitron difference, walk toward the side of a conventional TV and notice how the screen bulge tends to block part of the picture. You can view the FD Trinitron television through almost a full 180 angle - without losing any picture information.

Step-up features from the KV-27/32/36FS120
Hi-Scan 1080i display means they are HDTV ready with the ability to display high-definition broadcasts (480p, 720p, 1080i) in true high definition resolution when you attach an optional set-top box or DTV decoder. DRC (Digital Reality Creation) multifunction circuitry replaces the signals NTSC waveform with the HD equivalent, while doubling the number of vertical and horizontal lines. This results in an image with 4X the density of the original quality source including DVD, satellite, and digital camcorders. High-voltage regulator maintains consistent image size, despite variations in brightness during scene changes and channel changes. HD Detailer is a wideband video amplifier that has a high bandwidth frequency rating, allowing it to send more video information to the screen, resulting in finer picture quality, especially for HD sources. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) with HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) provides an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TVs and HDMI-equipped A/V component, such as a set-top box, DVD player, and A/V receiver. Scrolling Channel Index System allows you to view one main image and four inset channels simultaneously. Fixed/variable audio output allows sound to be sent to additional equipment like an A/V receiver, speakers or wireless headphones.

Sleep Timer lets you fall asleep watching TV and have the TV turn itself off up to three hours later (in 10-minute intervals). Closed Captioning on Mute automatically displays captioned information (if available) on-screen when the MUTE button is pressed. V-Chip Parental Control system lets adults decide which show ratings are appropriate for kids. The TV will then block out the video and audio of any program that has a rating beyond selected levels. Adults can override the system at any time using a secret code. For easy switching back and forth between two programs, the Channel Return button returns you to the last channel you were viewing. Audio noise will be muted when the TV tuner is on a channel without a signal. This eliminates loud hiss when scrolling by unused tuner input or empty channels. GameTimer allows you to set the television to shut off after a specified period of time. The television will stay off until a lockout key code is entered. Channel Labeling allows you to put the Call Letters (e.g., ABC, HBO, etc.) on the screen along with the station numbers, so you always know what channel you're watching. Video Labeling allows you to name each of you video inputs by choosing from a menu of name choices (e.g., VCR, DVD, TV, etc.). Sub Bass System (SBS) creates a bass boost at and around the 100-cycle audio-frequency area. This creates a noticeable increase in bottom end and overall fullness, for a richer, deeper home theater sound. HD Window POP (Picture-on-Picture) is an advanced system can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals, and can even display 4:3 and 16:9 images on the screen at the same time. The split screen function allows you to increase or decrease the size of the POP boxes, making one larger than the other. The MultiWindow (12) system enables you to continue to view the main picture in a large POP box while viewing favorite channels, or channel scanning in the other smaller POP boxes. Movie Mode changes the basic picture setup conditions to create a more theater-like picture. User-selectable settings such as brightness, contrast, color and color temperature are automatically adjusted. Sports Mode automatically adjusts appropriate picture levels to produce enhanced color, detail and brightness. Selected channels can be locked out to prevent viewing. Channels can be unlocked by entering a secret code. For optimum display of each type of input source, individual AV settings by input allow the you to make video adjustments for each type of input, such as RF, composite, S-Video, and each ColorStream component video input. With two-level mute, volume is muted 50% by a first touch (allowing one viewer to take a phone call while the other continues watching and listening) and 100% by a second, providing quick access to instant volume control. SurfLock lets you browse programs on other channels then return to the original channel at any time simply by pressing one button. You can then scan available channels, and when ready to return to the original, simply presses the channel return button again to view the channel in memory. Auto Aspect Detection senses when an interlaced DVD player is sending a 16:9 signal, and automatically sets the TV to the correct picture size mode.
