NETGEAR DG814 DSL Modem Internet Gateway
Version 4.7 June 10, 2003
This note describes enhancements and bug fixes incorporated in the DG814 firmware version V4.7. The enhancements and fixes are those added since the previous release V4.6. For historical purposes, the enhancements and bug fixes incorporated into previous firmware versions are also included.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)
Universal Plug and Play functionality has been added. A UPnP screen can now be accessed from the Advanced section of the Main Menu.

Network Time Protocol fixed. Previous firmware version used only a single NTP server to set the time of day. This version uses a list of 30 servers, which reduces the reliance on a single server. Improved IPSec passthrough compatibility. Fixed issue that prevented browsing certain sites in PPPoE mode. Fixed interoperability issue with Sony Playstation 2 voice traffic when NAT is disabled. Updated ADSL firmware to improve low-level ADSL performance.

The Reference Manual has not been updated for V4.6.

VPN Passthrough

VPN passthrough, with the VPN server connected to the DG814 LAN is now supported. The feature works for L2TP, PPTP and IPSec, using both DMZ and Port Forwarding.

Remote Firmware upgrade

Remote firmware upgrade using the web interface is now supported when Remote Management is enabled.

Default MTU change

The Default MTU Size has been changed to 1458 bytes. This improves performance with many ISPs.

Dynamic DNS has been fixed. Port Forwarding of FTP on port 21 has been fixed. The IP addresses under Basic Settings now allow the range 0-255 on all fields except the fourth octet. Previously, 255 was not allowed. A Port Forwarding display problem has been fixed when a range of ports is edited.

Remote Access The Remote Management menu has been added to the Advanced section of the Main Menu. MTU Size The MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) size can be set in the Basic Settings menu. MAC Address Cloning MAC Address Cloning has been added to the Basic Settings page when no login is specified. Improved Connection Logging Connection information, including PPP login, has been added to the Logs menu item. Static IP Addressing available on PPPoA line
Some ISPs use Static IP addresses along with the PPPoA protocol. Note that IP addresses assigned by the ISP will over-ride the static setting for PPPoA.
Quick Reconnect of PPPoE and PPPoA on ADSL Disconnect
When the ADSL physical layer reconnects after a dropped line, the gateway remembers the PPPoE or PPPoA context and attempts to reconnect the previous session. Previously, it was necessary to wait for the ISPs PPP connection to timeout before reconnecting. However, Quick Reconnect will not improve login time when the gateway is power cycled.

Updated GUI The look and feel of the Graphical User Interface has been updated to be easier to use. Help for each screen is along the right side of the screen. Smart Wizard The new Smart Wizard will automatically detect the correct VPI/VCI combination, multiplexing method and encapsulation protocol (bridged Ethernet, PPPoE or PPPoA) on most systems. Disable NAT Network Address Translation can be disabled in the Port Forwarding menu, allowing traditional routing using multiple public IP addresses.

4. 5. Bug Fixed: PPPoA occasionally indicates connection is OK, when it has failed. Improved stability of Ethernet interface when using PPPoE and PPPoA.

Upgrade Procedure

To reach the Upgrade menu, click Maintenance from the navigation bar on the left, and then click the UPGRADE heading. To upload new firmware: 1. Download and unzip the new software file from NETGEAR. 2. In the Software Upgrade menu, click the Browse button and browse to the location of the binary (.BIN) upgrade file. 3. Click Upload. Note: When uploading software to the Model DG814 gateway, it is important not to interrupt the Web browser by closing the window, clicking a link, or loading a new page. If the browser is interrupted, it may corrupt the software. When the upload is complete, your gateway will automatically restart.
