The Challenge
The hospitality industry is a fiercely competitive industry, with demands placed upon it to maintain occupancy rates, increase revenue streams and deliver exceptional customer service. Hotels and the leisure industry need to ensure that they can provide connectivity that is secure, reliable, with the minimal requirement for support which can be installed and maintained with the minimum amount of disruption to the business.
Increase occupancy rates with High Speed Internet Access (HSIA)
There is an increasing trend for hotels to provide High Speed Internet Access (HSIA) as increasing numbers of business travellers, who wish to continue working will not stay in hotels unless they have such connectivity. A large number of hotels are providing wireless internet access to improve revenue and profitability in both communal and guest bedrooms. The trend is starting to appear that for guests staying in the hotel the internet access can be free to attract and retain business customers. However most hotels are charging for the communal areas more freely available to non residential customers.
Delivering entertainment services
To generate new revenue streams and deliver improved revenue services, there are an increasing number of innovative hotel chains deploying Video on Demand (VoD) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), with integration to the Property Management System (PMS) to enable these services to have seamless billing directly to guest rooms. To deliver true entertainment services throughout the business it is critical that high speed internet access is available to ensure the smooth delivery of content.
Avoiding disruption to guests
Installation of new networks can create massive disruption to hotel guests, compromising customer service levels and reducing occupancy rates whilst cabling work is in progress, so it is important that any changes that are implemented minimise customer disruption.
Controlling bandwidth and protecting customers from Internet content abuse through P2P
Peer to Peer file sharing (P2P) has been the scourge of the Internet for some time. First it was media companies worrying about copyright theft, then it was ISPs dealing with the increased upstream bandwidth usage. Now its hotel owners who have to worry about P2P file sharing. Most hotels, when planning their internet service, expected most users to be doing typical business things on the network. The typical business user may use e-mail, web browsing or create a VPN connection back to HQ to transfer some files or access a web application. P2P wasnt a priority or an issue. These days hotels are finding their networks clogged with P2P traffic. P2P has spread from an underhand method to pirate music into legitimate uses such as to stream on-line gaming, listen to Internet radio and stream legitimate video content. In addition the classroom students of yesterday are the business people of today. They are much more technically competant and are likely to use P2P style applications. P2P offers two serious challenges to a hotel Internet service. First P2P users tend to consume an enormous amount of broadband bandwidth with many applications design to use the whole available bandwidth in one go.
