Set Design

If you are making clay animations, then one of the most important features of your animation is the set. Set design is said to be quite difficult but with our series on set design you will be designing perfect sets in a matter of 3 issues!

Set design made simple

Step 1, Planning
If you are going to make a set you must plan, I have a whiteboard situated next to my desk, I plan all animations and sets there and take a photo, then I can print, annotate and add to the plan and have it on set when making, also it gives you an idea of the size of the objects and the materials you need.

Step 2, The Base

All sets must have a base, if not the set may be unstable or unable to place in a fixed position, for our base we are going to be using some cardboard, if you would like to go for a more advanced looking floor / base you can use wood or floorboards for a professional texture.

Step 3, The Walls

For my walls I am, going to use mdf, you can pick it up online or in a DIY shop it will give use a thick wall and will allow us to have great options from a finishing perspective

Saminatorger Q & A

When did you start animating ? Around 2006, I was bored in the school holidays and decided to give animation a go. What inspired you to start animating ? Smeagol Studios' videos were some of the first I came across and I wanted to do something similar, but my main inspiration came from The Lego Clan by backyard studio. Will There be a package 3 ? Yes there will, I announced there would be a 3rd on bricktuts.com around 1-2 months ago. What camera do you use for animation ? I have used 3, I used an old Fujifilm camera from about 2004, then moved onto a Panasonic NV-GS85 Camcorder which was brilliant but the picture quality was not brilliant. I now use a Sony HDR-CX115 HD Camcorder which I would highly recommend. Is there any tips you would like to give to beginner animators ? You have to start somewhere, so don't be afraid to publish something you don't think is up to quality as stop motion is all about refining and improving. If the package 3 is made when will it be on YouTube ? Not for at least a year, I'm not gonna say too much about it as I want to keep it a secret. When did you become a partner ? October 15th, I only had 139 subscribers, so don't go thinking you need over a certain amount of subs to get in.
What animation software do you use ? I did use Monkey Jam, but I actually now use EffectsLab Pro to put my frames together. How did you learn blender ?
