2 Overview
HP Insight Power Manager (IPM) is an HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) plug-in application that provides centralized monitoring and control of server power consumption and thermal output. NOTE: IPM v2.0 requires HP SIM v5.2.2 or later.
IPM differs from other management applications in three key areas: Automated power management. After you enter power management configurations, IPM automatically sends commands to appropriate systems for action. For example, you can simultaneously configure multiple servers to be in Power Regulator mode or to have a Power Cap setting. Operating system independence. IPM supports all operating systems that are supported on ProLiant servers and BladeSystem c-Class enclosures. For a list of these operating systems, see http:// www.hp.com/go/supportos. Demonstrated power management savings. IPM displays the monetary savings in a convenient and easy-to-read format. Graphically monitor and manage power consumption for a single server, a group of servers, a single c-Class enclosure, a group of c-Class enclosures or a mix of the above systems using a central user interface. Group systems logically and physically using native HP SIM collections and views grouping capabilities (for example Rack 42 or All Exchange Servers). Change the HP Power Regulator setting for one or many systems. Change the Power Cap setting for one or many systems. Review CPU performance including the impact of power-saving technology. Chart inlet air temperature for a single server, a group of servers, a single c-Class enclosure, a group of c-Class enclosures or a mix of the above systems. Download historical data in CSV format to create customized reports. View dashboard analysis data, including power savings due to HP Power Regulator technology, for a single server or group of servers. Quickly and easily configure Power Regulator settings across multiple servers.
Conclusion
The previous figure illustrates: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. HP Static Low Power Mode and HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode save resources when compared to no power management or HP Static High Performance Mode. HP Static Low Power Mode saves the most resources at full utilization, but still can have some impact on system performance at the highest levels of utilization. HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode saves the most resources at the workload level just before it switches to the higher processor p-state. HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode delivers exactly the same level of performance as no power management or HP Static High Performance Mode. Power Regulator technology saves resources on servers that are busy rather than those that are idle.
Reducing cooling power with HP Power Regulator
Power consumed by the server becomes heat that must be extracted by the data center. The previous figure illustrates that each watt consumed by the server requires another 1.0 to 1.5 watts for the environmental control system to cool the server. Correspondingly, reducing power consumption by the server reduces the air conditioning requirements for the server. Insight Power Manager Power Consumption and CPU Performance graphs estimate the cooling costs saved.
Avoiding data center expansion and construction
Data center construction costs an average of $22,000 per square foot. Insight Power Manager can help you determine if your data center can support additional servers. Using Insight Power Manager to avoid or even delay new data center construction can save your company thousands of dollars. Related topics

6 Configure HP Power Management Actions
How to configure HP Power Regulator
The HP Power Regulator Configure section enables you to set the Power Cap and change the Power Regulator mode of the selected systems. To configure the HP Power Regulator mode or the Power Cap: 1. 2. From the HP Insight Power Manager page, open the HP Power Management Actions section, select the systems to change and click Change. The Configure HP Insight Power Manager section appears. Select one of the following modes from the Insight Power Manager Status list: 3. HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode. Allows the system to dynamically change the processor power level based on current operating conditions. HP Static Low Power Mode. Sets the processor to the lowest supported processor state and maintains it at the lowest state. HP Static High Performance Mode. Sets the processor to the highest supported processor state and maintains it at the highest state. OS Control Mode. Configures the system to support OS-based power management. The system operates at the highest supported processor state until the OS-based power management is enabled. The type of power cap is determined when selecting: A single server, the cap is a static single-server cap. If the server features the necessary hardware and software to support Dynamic Power Capping, the tooltip on the cap value will display "System supports Dynamic Power Capping". Otherwise the server supports normal Power Capping. Dynamic Power Capping is superior because it is capable of reacting to power level increases fast enough to provide electrical circuit breaker protection. If the text "System supports Dynamic Power Capping" is not displayed the server supports normal Power Capping. Normal power capping does not react fast enough to provide electrical circuit breaker protection. Once a power cap is set, the average power reading of the server over time should be at or under the cap value. Multiple servers, the cap is a static group cap. With a static group cap, each server in the group is assigned a static linear apportionment of the total group cap. NOTE: The Power Cap supported systems only will be considered for calculating the Minimum Power, Maximum Power, Average Power, Maximum Available Power, and Power Cap Lower Bound. NOTE: If the group of servers contain both the Power Cap and Dynamic Power Cap supported servers, the resulting Power Cap type while configuring them as a single group is Power Cap. An enclosure, the cap is a Enclosure Dynamic Power Cap. This type of cap dynamically sets and adjusts caps on the individual servers in the enclosure to meet workload demand while complying with the total enclosure cap.

8 Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
IPM fails to show the Power graph and I receive the message Insight Power Manager could not communicate with the Management Processor as it is not accessible.
Solution: One of the following could be the reason for getting the above mentioned message.
Connection to Management Processor timed out due to network problem or Management Processor being unreachable. Connection to Management Processor timed out because SSH access is not enabled in the Management Processor. Connection to Management Processor timed out because number of concurrent SSH connections has reached maximum allowed limit for that Management Processor.
Please make sure that these problems are resolved. My IPM supported server is being listed as System is not supported by Insight Power Manager.
Solution: Take the following steps to resolve the problem:
1. Verify that your server is indeed supported by the version of IPM you have installed, and that you are running the required iLO firmware versions on the managed systems. To access the latest IPM support matrix, see the instructions in the Getting started section of this document. To view IPM version information, select HelpAbout HP Insight Power Manager. Select OptionsInsight Power Manager Options and make sure that the IPM plug-in is enabled. Check to see that the management processor is discovered and associated with the server. NOTE: Server Management Processor association is a must to be able to view the Power details in Insight Power Manager. 4. IPM takes 15 minutes to identify the system as IPM supported system. If IPM does not identify the system, run the Identification Task on both the server and its management processor by selecting OptionsIdentify Systems. Running the Identification Task will help Insight Power Manager to recognize the server as a IPM supported system. IPM has failed to fetch the Power details and a message is displayed indicating Unable to communicate with iLO because it does not have an iLO Advanced or iLO Select license.
1. 2. 3. 4. Launch the iLO web interface and assign the Advanced/Select license if the iLO is not already licensed. Check to be sure the iLO is associated with its server. Launch the DeployLicense Manager by selecting the iLO as target and click on Collect license info. SelectDeployLicense Manager to verify the iLO is listed as the licensed system under the HP iLO Advance Pack or the HP iLO Select Pack category. NOTE: iLO must appear as a licensed system in the License Manager to view the Power details from Insight Power Manager. 5. Launch the IPM page on that server and click Refresh Data to view the latest power details.
Using iLO Web Interface, you need to configure the CMS server to receive SNMP alerts from iLO 2. From HP SIM, you need to configure cpqHo2PowerThresholdTrap defined in cpqHost.mib on the SNMP Trap Settings (OptionsEventsSNMP Trap Settings) page. On power threshold breach, iLO 2 sends SNMP alerts, which are logged against the server and can be viewed from Events tab of the System page.

Power Consumption graph
The Power Consumption graph displays the Average and Peak Power Consumption for the selected server or collection of servers. The Average Power Consumption data points show the arithmetic mean for the power consumed over the time period represented by a single point on the graph. The line formed by the Average Power Consumption data points shows the steady-state power consumption of the server. The Peak Power Consumption data points show the highest power consumption over the time period represented by a single point on the graph. The line formed by the Peak Power Consumption data points shows the short-term spikes in power consumption. Data may be displayed in Watts or Btu-hr units of measure. The time scale for the graph may be adjusted to show hours, days, weeks, months or years.
CPU Performance graph The CPU Performance graph displays the aggregated CPU Utilization and the Effective CPU Speed of the selected server. The aggregated CPU Utilization is the CPU utilization for all processor cores averaged together. The line formed by the CPU Utilization data points shows the workload on the server. The Effective CPU Speed shows the resulting gigahertz (GHz) of the server's CPUs after calculating the effect of HP Power Regulator down-shifting the CPUs to lower speeds for power saving reasons. In HP Dynamic Power Savings Mode, the Effective CPU Speed will move up and down as required to accommodate the workload of the server. The time scale for the graph may be adjusted to show hours, days, weeks, months or years.
Inlet Air Temperature graph
The Inlet Air Temperature graph displays the temperature of the ambient air as it enters the selected server(s). The work performed by the server(s) creates heat that must be cooled by the data center's cooling system. The busier the servers, the more heat must be cooled to maintain a constant data center temperature. A temperature trend line is added for the selected server(s) to show if the data center temperature is rising or failing over time. Data may be displayed in Fahrenheit or Celsius units of measure. The time scale for the graph may be adjusted to show hours, days, weeks, months or years.
Power Capping
Limiting the server(s) power consumption to an average level, power capping can be set to minimize overall power consumption and heat output.
Page 3
Dynamic Power Capping Dynamic Power Capping in HP Insight Control Environment represents a significant advancement in power management. Unlike previous power capping technologies Dynamic Power Capping will safely limit power usage with no performance degradation and without risk to electrical infrastructure. For single rack servers, power caps applied via the iLO management processor will limit power usage to a specific Watt or BTU/hr level. For enclosures of blades, users will set an enclosure level power cap, and the Onboard Administrator will dynamically adjust individual server power caps based on their specific power requirements. By capping power usage at historical peak power usage instead of significantly higher face-plate, ROM burn, or power calculator default values, IT organizations can fit up to 36% more servers in their existing rack infrastructure. Supported servers for Dynamic Power Capping: c-Class: HP ProLiant BladeSystem c-Class HP ProLiant BL280c G6 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL460c G6 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL490c G6 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL2x220c G5 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL260c Server Blade HP ProLiant BL460c Server Blade HP ProLiant BL460c G5 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL465c G5 Server Blade HP ProLiant BL495c G5 Server Blade BladeWorkStation: HP ProLiant BladeWorkStation HP ProLiant xw2x220c Workstation Blade Enclosure: HP ProLiant BL c-Class Enclosure HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure HP BladeSystem c3000 Enclosure (rack-optimized): HP ProLiant DL (rack-optimized) HP ProLiant DL360 G6 HP ProLiant DL370 G6 HP ProLiant DL380 G6 HP ProLiant DL360 G5 HP ProLiant DL380 G5 (expansion-optimized): HP ProLiant ML (expansion-optimized) HP ProLiant ML350 G6 HP ProLiant ML370 G6
Analysis dashboard
Each graph has an Analysis dashboard that summarizes key information for the selected server(s). The data displayed varies for each graph and includes total power consumed in kWh, the estimated costs of powering and cooling the selected server(s) and the estimated costs saved through the use of policymanagement based on HP's Power Regulator technology.
Page 4
Actions section and policy The Insight Power Manager supports taking action on the selected server(s). Insight Power Manager can change the HP Power Regulator settings on a single server or on multiple servers all at once. These management actions may be executed immediately or scheduled to occur at a future time or on a recurring basis. Action scheduling can be used to set time-based power policies on single servers as well as collections of servers.
Customer Usage Scenarios
Datacenter Capacity Planning - ProLiant and Integrity customers who are deploying these servers in production environments may use IPM to determine if additional servers can successfully be provisioned from a power and cooling perspective. The actual power consumption of the selected server(s) can be compared to the circuit size of the electrical infrastructure and cooling capacity of the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units. Detailed reports within IPM enables productive discussions between IT and facilities administrators. Operational Cost Reduction - Cost conscious businesses who are interested in minimizing server power and cooling costs to the minimum required without compromising performance may use IPM to establish dynamic power management policies that will provide maximum performance when needed, and cost savings when maximum performance is not required. Business Unit Chargeback - IPM enables the analysis of actual power and cooling costs by integrating a power meter into new ProLiant servers and by consolidating the power data to a central location. This information can be used to charge business units or third parties with the actual energy operational costs associated with workload processing. Datacenter Modeling - Years of power and thermal data may be stored with the Insight Power Manager. This data may be used for historical trending and analysis to create a model of the datacenter that can be used for planning future datacenters as well as upgrades, if needed, to existing ones. Virtualization and Server Consolidation - IPM can help assist IT administrators in determining which physical server loads might be compatible for consolidation onto a single physical or virtualized server.
