Conventional scanner

The challenge

Like many private educational institutions, Felsted School in Essex, England, relies heavily on alumni donations. Active and successful fundraising efforts are imperative to maintaining facilities and expanding educational programs. But how do you ask former students to donate money in a time when the entire world is tightening its belt? That was the challenge given to dsicmm group. To create an application that encourages alumni to get actively involved in their former school, both emotionally and financially, while delivering a substantial return on investment.

The solution

Felsted School Legacy Book, Books Working with dsicmm group and their design agency, STM, Felsted School produced a high-quality personalized memoir of the school for alumni. Due to the timing and sensitivity of the subject matter, the piece subtly played to the emotions of the former students while discreetly asking for their financial support. It did this by capturing the spirit and history of the school while an accompanying leaflet appealed to alumni to leave a legacy for Felsted in their wills. The books cover used the recipients name and years at the school as the title and was printed on 300 gsm Xerox Colotech+stock, while the interior pages were printed on 160 gsm Colotech stock and used personalization cleverly throughout. The Xerox iGen4 Press paired with a CX Print Server, powered by Creo, to print the books before they were bound by a Horizon BQ270 Perfect Binder.

dsicmm group

Formed in 2007 through a merger of two successful privately owned companies (dsi and CMM), Dagenham-based dsicmm group currently has six production sites throughout the United Kingdom and is considered one of the countrys largest and most innovative communication, print and direct mail organizations. They specialize in developing innovative, variable data applications for their clients using a unique nexdox platform that utilizes complex business logic to convert client data into high-volume, variable digital color outputs and electronic communications. The benefits

The personalized book was sent to 1,500 alumni 55 years of age and olderand success was immediate. The Felsted School received pledges amounting to an amazing 2,400 percent return on investment, with a single donation covering all print, development, production and postage costs. Some recipients even called the school to order additional copies. How often does that happen with direct marketing pieces? Based on this resounding success, The Felsted School has decided to broaden distribution of the book to a wider audience. The press also picked up on the phenomenal response rates, which generated significant coverage for both the application and dsicmm group. Since being the focus of a free editorial feature in a school trade magazine, potential customers have been contacting dsicmm group, as opposed to the other way around. But when it is time to find new clients, they now have a proven sample showcasing their results-generating capabilities. This application demonstrates that direct mail pieces with high production values and individual unit costs arent actually expensiveif they generate a high return on investment.
