What is the guaranteed imageable (printable) area?
The printable area on all media sizes is up to 4 mm (0.157") from the edges of the media. Each media size has a specific imageable area, the maximum area on which the machine can print clearly and without distortion.

Printable Area

This area is subject to both hardware a limits (the physical media size and the a = 4 mm (0.157") margins required by the machine) and software constraints (the amount of memory available for the full-page frame buffer). The guaranteed imageable (printable) area for all media sizes is the page size minus 4 mm (0.157") from all edges of the media.

Imageable areaenvelopes

Envelopes have a nonguaranteed imageable area that varies with envelope type. The envelope print orientation is determined by your application.
Nonimageable area 4 mm (0.157")

Nonguaranteed area

Guaranteed area

Page margins

Margins are set through your application. Some applications allow you to set custom page sizes and margins while others have only standard page sizes and margins from which to choose. If you choose a standard format, you may lose part of your image (due to imageable area constraints). If you can custom-size your page in your application, use those sizes given for the imageable area for optimum results.

Media storage

How do I store media?
Keep media on a flat, level surface in its original wrapper until it is time to load it. Media that has been stored for a long time out of its packaging may dry up too much and cause misfeeding. If media has been removed from its wrapper, place it in its original packaging and store in a cool, dark place on a level surface. Avoid moisture, excessive humidity, direct sunlight, excessive heat (above 35C [95F]), and dust Avoid leaning against other objects or placing it in an upright position. Before using stored media, do a trial print and check print quality.

Loading media

How do I load media?
Take off the top and bottom sheets of a ream of paper. Holding a stack of approximately 200 sheets at a time, fan the stack to prevent static buildup before inserting it in a tray. Do not fan transparencies.
Although this machine was designed for printing on a wide range of media types, it is not intended to print exclusively on a single media type except plain paper. Continuous printing on media other than plain paper (such as envelopes, thick stock, or transparencies) may adversely affect print quality or reduce engine life. When refilling media, first remove any media remaining in the tray. Stack it with the new media, even the edges, then reload it. Do not mix media of different types and sizes, as this will cause media misfeeds.

Media tray

Remove the tray cover from the media tray.
Squeeze the right media guide and open the media guides.
Load the media lengthwise in the tray with the printing side up. If media is loaded past the media limit mark, it may not be fed correctly. For details on how many sheets of each type of media can be loaded in the tray, refer to Media Types on page 26.
Before loading envelopes, press them down to make sure that all air is removed, and make sure that the folds of the flaps are firmly pressed; otherwise, the envelopes may become wrinkled or a media misfeed may occur. Load envelopes lengthwise with the side to be printed facing up as shown in the illustration.
Squeeze the right media guide and adjust the media guides so that both the left and right sides of the media are secure. Then, replace the tray cover on the media tray.
After the envelope is fed into the output tray, immediately open its flap (before it has cooled). Because the envelopes pass through heated rollers, the gummed flaps may seal. Using envelopes with emulsion-based glue avoids this problem.

Manual feed tray

When using the manual feed tray, the media must be fed in one sheet at a time. If the manual feed tray runs out of media during printing, media is automatically supplied by the media tray. Make sure that the tray cover is properly attached to media tray. Open the media guides.
Insert the sheet of media as far as possible into the manual feed tray with the side to be printed on facing up, and then adjust the media guides so that both sides of media are secure.
Before loading envelopes, press them down to make sure that all air is removed, and make sure that the folds of the flaps are firmly pressed; otherwise, the envelopes may become wrinkled or a media misfeed may occur.
When loading envelopes, load them lengthwise with the side to be printed facing up as shown in the illustration.

Scanner Operation

This machine allows you to scan from a TWAIN-compliant or plug-in application. Since the scanner driver is not stand-alone software, it has to be started from a TWAIN-compliant application to be able to scan and load an image to your computer. The command to start the scanner driver may vary depending on the application. To determine the correct command, refer to the user manual for the application.
User interface operation 1
Do not open the ADF lid while documents loaded into the ADF are being scanned. Place the original document face down on the flatbed glass and align its center with the arrow mark on the glass. If the optional ADF is installed, put the top end of the document stack into the ADF input tray face up and with the first page to be copied on top of the stack. Before loading the document in the ADF, check that no document pages remain on the flatbed glass. Start the TWAIN scanning application. From the File menu, click Select Source. If Select Source is not available in the File menu, refer to the applications user manual to determine how the TWAIN link is used. A dialog box with a list of scanning sources appears. Select or import PagePro 1380 MF. You need to select the source only once, unless you want to choose a different scanner.
A dialog box containing scanning settings appears.

From the Scan Method drop-down list, select the desired scanning method. From the Image Type drop-down list, select the desired scanning mode. From the Resolution drop-down list, select a scanning resolution. Select desired scanning settings such as Sharpen or Descreen. Click Preview or Scan to preview or scan your document(s).

Scan method

You can select how to scan from the Scan Method drop-down list. Flatbed: Use this setting if you are scanning one page at a time using the flatbed. Simplex/Multi-page: Use this setting if you are scanning a multi-page document using the optional auto document feeder (ADF).
Selecting the proper image type
Select the appropriate image type for your purpose through the scanner user interface. The different image types are described below.

User interface operation

Black and White
Black and White represents the image in black and white only, without intermediate shades of gray in-between. That means each pixel of the image is either 100% black or 100% white. Black and White is the best choice of image type for scanning text or a pen or ink drawing. Since only 1 bit of black or white information is required for each pixel , the disk space required for saving a line art image is only about 1/24 of that required to save a 24-bit True Color image.
Black and White Image A combination of the words picture and element, a pixel is a single dot on a computer display or in a digital image.

8-Bit Gray

A single-channel image consists of at least 256 shades of gray. An 8-bit scanner produces a grayscale image with 1,024 shades of gray between pure black and pure white. Choose this option for scanning black-and-white photographs. With 8 bits of color information per pixel, the file size of an image is eight times larger than that of a black-and-white image and 1/3 the size of a 24-bit color image.

8-Bit Gray Image

24-Bit Color
A 24-bit color image consists of three 8-bit color channels. The red, green, and blue channels are mixed together to create a combination of one billion colors, which give a more true-to-life quality to the image. Choose 24-Bit Color for scanning color photos.

24-Bit Color Image

Selecting the proper resolution
Good control of the resolution results in satisfactory details in the scanned image. The resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Typically, the greater the dpi, the higher the resolution and image file size. Be aware that a greater resolution requires more time, memory, and disk space. Note that above a certain dpi, the resolution does not visually improve the image, but only makes your file larger.

Resolution: 50 dpi

Resolution: 100 dpi

For your information, an A4-sized color image scanned at 300 dpi in True Color mode consumes approximately 25 MB of disk space. A higher resolution (over 600 dpi) is recommended only when you need to scan a small area in True Color mode.
Refer to the following table to choose the proper resolution for your image, depending on the application.

Processor

The PagePro 1380 MF and PagePro 1390 MF use the power of the host computer operating system for processing documents prior to printing. The controllers feature an ARM946E-S processor, operating at 150 MHz, for document imaging.

Printer Memory

The base memory is sufficient for all printing, copying, scanning, and (PagePro 1390 MF) faxing at all supported resolutions. Additional memory is not required. However, increasing the memory of the host computer may improve transmission speed and, thus, the overall performance of the all-in-one.

Compatibility

The PagePro 1380 MF and PagePro 1390 MF are compatible with the following operating systems: Windows XP/2000/Me/98SE

Connectivity

The following interface is available: The Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface provides a 4-pin Series B connector. This Plug and Play interface supports Windows XP, 2000, Me, and 98SE.

Resolution

Print PagePro 1390 MF: 1200 x 600 dpi, 600 x 600 dpi PagePro 1380 MF: 600 x 600 dpi Increasing or decreasing print resolution does not affect the speed of the engine or significantly affect the amount of toner used for printed output. The PagePro 1390 MF prints at full speed regardless of the print resolution chosen, and it provides a low cost per page even at the highest print quality selection. Copy 600 x 600 dpi Copy quality may be enhanced by adjusting such characteristics as lightness, density, and document type.
On the PagePro 1390 MF, documents can be copied, scanned, and faxed from either the flatbed glass or the automatic document feeder.
Scanning Scan quality is composed of bit depth and optical resolution. Bit depth refers to the amount of digital information embedded in each pixel. The PagePro 1380 MF/1390 MF feature 24-bit color scans, which provide 16.7 million colors. Optical resolution refers to the quality at which the scanner converts a paper image to a digital image. It is not the same as print resolution. The PagePro 1380 MF/1390 MF provide the following optical scan resolutions: 1200 x 1200 dpi 600 x 600 dpi
On the PagePro 1380 MF, documents can be copied and scanned from the flatbed glass. An optional automatic document feeder can be added for unattended copying and scanning.

The resolution at which a document should be scanned depends upon a number of factors, including the size of the original item, the type of item (text, photograph, or a mixture of both), and the final size and purpose of the scanned image (print, web, etc.) The PagePro 1380 MF and PagePro 1390 MF Users Guides provide helpful information on choosing a scan resolution. However, a good guideline is to choose a higher scan resolution for files that will be printed and a lower scan resolution for files that will be posted to the web. In addition, the higher the resolution, the larger the file size. FaxPagePro 1390 MF only Four fax resolutions are available: Standard (STD.)For documents containing normal text (such as handwriting). This is the default setting. FineFor documents containing small text. Super Fine (S-Fine)For documents containing detailed illustrations, such as newsletters. PhotoFor documents with color shading, such as photos. The higher the resolution, the longer the document takes to transmit.

Printer-based electronic collation means that the document file is transmitted to the PagePro 1380 MF/ 1390 MF only once, and the sorting is done at the printer. For example, if you want 2 collated copies of a 3-page document, on the printer drivers Paper tab you specify 2 copies and select Collated. The document file is transmitted to the magicolor PagePro 1380 MF/1390 MF once, and the pages are printed in the order 1-2-3 (copy 1), 1-2-3 (copy 2). N-up printing The n-up feature allows 2, 4, or 9 pages of a multi-page document to be printed on a single sheet of media. You can also add a solid or dashed border line around each page and specify the flow of the pages across the sheet. Watermarks

Convert paper documents to digital documents to share or edit.

LinkMagic

LinkMagic is a KONICA MINOLTA scanning utility that provides easy access to the most frequently used scanning applications. Using LinkMagic eliminates the need to launch the specific application manually and allows you to scan documents directly to a folder on your computer. Complete usage information is included in the Users Guide.

PaperPort SE

Documents and photographs can be scanned using either the TWAIN or WIA scan driver. Both are included on the Utilities & Documentation CD-ROM and are installed on the PC at the same time the PagePro 1380 MF/1390 MF printer driver is installed.
The PagePro 1380 MF/1390 MF and PaperPort SE work together to provide an easy way to convert paper documents to digital documents for easy file sharing. Saving scanned files Scanned files can be saved in PDF, JPEG, TIFF, and other common file formats. Touching up images Once a document has been scanned, PaperPort SE provides a number of tools that allow it to be further customized. Image files (such as PDF, BMP, JPEG, and TIFF) can be imported directly into PaperPort SE for customization. Image-editing tools include Rotate, Straighten and Auto Straighten, Enhance and Auto Enhance, Sharpen, Remove Red Eye, Crop, Erase, Remove Stray Dots, and Improve Lines. Annotating pages The PaperPort SE annotation tools allow you to add notes and text, highlight text, draw lines and arrows, and stamp bitmap images on a page. Annotations added to PDF and PaperPort Image (.max) files can be edited at a later date while annotations added to other image files become a permanent part of the image.
Converting scanned images to text Scanned text documents can be easily converted to editable text by simply dragging and dropping them to a word processing program (such as Word). PaperPort SE automatically processes the scanned document, using its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) functionality, and then opens the editable text in the word processing program. Organizing image files The PaperPort SE visual interface makes it easy to visually organize scanned documents, digital photographs, and other image files. The default file folders can be copied, moved, rearranged, renamed, and color coded for easy identification and classification, and new file folders can be added. Image files can be moved to any folder simply by dragging and dropping. Once items have been organized into file folders, they can be located using the PaperPort SE SimpleSearch feature, which allows files to be searched for by name, author, added comments or keywords, and annotation text.
