This function scans the item and saves the data in the PDF format, then starts the linked application program and passes the document file to it. In the Windows version, Presto! PageManager is the linked application by default. In the Macintosh version, this function starts Acrobat Reader (a program for viewing PDFs) and opens the scanned image file in it.
To print the scanned image, the printer driver must be installed. You must also have both the scanner and printer connected to the computer and ready to use. With Windows, a portion of the window's contents may be different when used with some printer models.
Scan Mode Click the down-arrow next to 'Scan Mode' to choose the appropriate scanning mode. For scanner models that do not support film scanning, the Scan Mode choices will be:

Black and White Grayscale
Scans an item as a black and white image. Scans an item as a grayscale image (similar to a monochrome picture).
Color (Magazine) Scans an item as a color image with the Descreen function set to On. Color Scans an item as a color image with the Descreen function set to Off.
Color (Multi-Scan) Scans items in color. If more than one item is placed on the document glass of the scanner, each one is automatically cut out, straightened, and placed in an individual file. Color (Auto crop) Scans items in color.

Automatically detects item positions and scans the smallest possible area into which all items will fit. * Please note that only one PDF file is created when multiple items are simultaneously scanned in the Color (Multi-Scan) mode. * Moir? patterns may appear in images scanned from printed materials. The Descreen function limits this to the greatest possible extent. However, scanning takes longer when Descreen is set to On. * Multiple items print when multiple items are scanned with the Color (Multi-Scan) mode.
Image Quality Click the down-arrow next to 'Image Quality' to choose the desired scan quality. With Windows, the available options are 75 dpi, 100 dpi, 150 dpi, 200 dpi, 300 dpi and 400 dpi. With Macintosh, the available options are 75 dpi, 100 dpi, 150 dpi, 200 dpi and 300 dpi.
When the Scan mode is set to Color (MultiScan) or Color (Auto crop), the available Image quality settings are 75 dpi, 150 dpi and 300 dpi.
Paper Size Click the down-arrow next to 'Paper Size' to choose the appropriate paper size. For scanner models that do not support film scanning, the Scan Mode choices will be:

Note: The above paper sizes may not appear in all Toolbox versions.
If the Stitch-assist (11"x17"), Stitch-assist (A3) or Stitch-assist (Platen x2) option is selected, the program scans the left half and then the right half of the item, and merges both halves into one image. If the Custom option is selected, the Paper Size Settings window opens. Select a [Unit] option, input [Width] and [Height] values, and click the [OK] button. * The Paper Size cannot be selected when the Scan Mode is set to Color (Multi-Scan) or Color (Auto crop).

Use the scanner driver to make advanced settings This category sets whether or not the scan settings are set with the ScanGear CS scanner driver. If a check mark is placed in this category, the ScanGear CS window will open when you click the Scan button at the window's lower right corner, allowing you to adjust the scan settings in detail. The Scanner settings in the File window, such as the Scan mode, Paper size and Image quality are disabled. Set them in the ScanGear CS window instead.
* With Windows, when the file type in the "Save as type" category is set to PDF and you have selected Color/Full Platen and more than 400dpi in the ScanGear CS window, a warning message will display and you will not be able to proceed with the scan. Select a smaller Paper size and lower resolution. * With a Macintosh, the "Use the scanner driver to make advanced settings" category is disabled. * If Multi-Scan is selected in the ScanGear CS window, the number of image files sent to the application program corresponds to the number of items on the document glass of the scanner.

File name

Input a file name here for the scanned image.
* If another file with the same name exists in the destination folder, a four-digit number such as "0001" will be appended to the file name. * If Color (Multi-Scan) is selected as the Scan mode and multiple items are scanned, a sequential four-digit number such as "0001" will be appended to the file name for each image starting from the second image. * The file name extension is automatically added.
Save as type This category selects the file format for saving the scanned image.
Only the PDF option can be selected.
To change the settings used to create PDF files, click the [PDF settings] button.
[PDF settings] button This button opens the settings window used for creating PDF files.
The following window will open when you have selected PDF as the file type in the Save as type category and click the PDF settings button. Adjust the settings and click the [OK] button to finish.

Create searchable PDF If a check mark is placed in the Create searchable PDF category, the text in the document is detected and converted into text data. It can then be used in simple keyword searches and other operations. If a check mark is placed in this category, an option can be selected from the Text language category.

* Not all of the text in the item may be correctly recognized. * To create a searchable PDF file, set the Image quality to 300 dpi or higher. * If you wish to convert the text in a document to editable text data, scan the item with the OCR button.
Create multiple PDF If a check mark is placed in the Create multiple PDF category, multiple items can be scanned and saved in one PDF file. The following window will display each time an item is scanned on the document glass of the scanner.

the scanner are saved into one PDF file. However, when you scan additional multiple items on the document glass of the scanner, they cannot be added to the previously created PDF file. * To scan a text document or black and white document, you are recommended to set the Scan mode to Black and White or Grayscale. * If you are scanning a color document with the Image quality set to 300 dpi and are creating a multiple PDF, you are recommended to limit the number of pages in any one PDF files to 20 or less.
PDF compression This category allows you to select a compression level for PDF file creation. Images (photos or illustrations) are compressed to reduce the file size. Select either Standard or High compression. Save Scanned Image To [Page Setup] Button This box displays the location to which the scanned image will be saved. To change the folder in which it will be saved, click the [Browse] button (Windows) or the [Select] button (Macintosh), select a folder and click the [OK] button (Windows) or the [Open] button (Macintosh). Put pictures in a subfolder using today's date This category sets whether or not a subfolder bearing the scanning date is created in the selected folder and the image files are saved to it.
If a check mark is placed in this category, a folder bearing the scanning date (such as "2002-12-03") is automatically created within the selected folder, and the images are saved to it with numerical file name suffixes assigned in the order in which they are saved. For example, if the "2002-12-03" folder contains a file named "File0001.PDF," and the next file is saved the next day in the "2002-12-04" folder, this image file will be named sequentially as "File0002.PDF."

If a check mark is placed in this category, a folder bearing the scanning date (such as "2002-12-03") is automatically created within the selected folder, and the images are saved to it with numerical file name suffixes assigned sequentially within each folder. For example, even if the "2002-12-03" folder contains a file named "File0001.PDF," the "2002-12-04" folder created the next day may also contain one named "File0001.PDF."

Link scanned image to This category sets the application program to which images are sent. The currently linked program is displayed in the box. When the application programs are first installed from the CanoScan Setup Utility CD-ROM, the Presto! PageManager program is linked in the Windows version and Adobe Acrobat Reader is linked in the Macintosh version. To Link a Different Program To link a different program, click the [Set.] button (Windows) or [Select] button (Macintosh), select the program you wish to use, and click the [OK] button. To Delete a Link to a Program To delete a link to a program, click the [Link Deletion] button. In the confirmation dialog, click the [Yes] button ([OK] button for Macintosh).
* With the File button (File window), linking a program in the "Link scanned image to" category that cannot read PDFs may result in some images not being displayable.
[Defaults] or [Reset] Button This button restores each setting in the window to its default setting (the original postinstallation setting). [Apply] Button This button makes the selected settings take effect and display the next time the window is used. Pressing the [Cancel] button instead of [Apply] will reset the changes to the previous state. [Cancel] Button This button cancels any settings that you have changed, closes the window that is currently open and displays the Toolbox's main window. Changed settings will be cancelled unless you have pressed the [Apply] button. [Scan] Button This button initiates a scan of the item using the selected settings. When the scan is complete, it automatically starts the application program that displays PDF files and opens the scanned image file in it.
* If the Scan mode is set to Color (MultiScan), multiple files are opened. However, only one PDF file is opened if a check mark is placed beside the "Create multiple PDF" category in the PDF settings.
