Troubleshooting
Clearing Jammed Paper
If paper becomes jammed in the printer, the EPSON Status Monitor provides alert messages.
Precautions for clearing jammed paper
Be sure to observe the following points when you clear jammed paper. Do not remove jammed paper by force. Torn paper can be difficult to remove and might cause other paper jams. Pull it gently in order to avoid tearing. Always try to remove jammed paper with both hands to avoid tearing it. If jammed paper is torn and remains in the printer, or if paper is jammed in a place not mentioned in this section, contact your dealer. Make sure that the paper type that is loaded is the same as the Paper Type setting in the printer driver. Do not expose the photoconductor unit to sunlight at all.
Warning: Be careful not to touch the fuser, which is marked CAUTION HOT SURFACE, or the surrounding areas. If the printer has been in use, the fuser and the surrounding areas may be very hot. Do not insert your hand deep into the fuser unit as some components are sharp and may cause injury.

Paper Handling Problems
Paper does not feed properly
Cause The paper guides are not set correctly. The paper source setting may not be correct. What to do Make sure that the paper guides in all the paper cassettes and the MP tray are set to the correct paper size positions. Make sure that you have selected the correct paper source in your application. Load paper into the selected paper source. Make sure that the correct paper size is selected in the printer driver settings. In the Printer Settings dialog box in the printer driver, set the size/type of loaded paper properly. Make sure that you have not tried to load too many sheets of paper. For the maximum paper capacity for each paper source, see General on page 155. For instructions on installing the unit, see Optional Paper Cassette Unit on page 55. Install the standard paper cassette.
There may be no paper in the paper source. The size of loaded paper differs from the selected paper size in the printer driver. The size/type of loaded paper is not selected in the Printer Settings dialog box. Too many sheets may be loaded in the MP tray or paper cassettes. If paper does not feed from the optional paper cassette unit, the unit may not be installed properly. When you make duplex printing from the MP tray, the standard paper cassette is not installed.
When the optional paper cassette is installed, the cassettes located above the one to feed paper from are not installed. The pickup roller is dirty. The optional paper cassette may not be installed properly.
Set all the paper cassettes above the one to feed paper from.
Clean up the pickup roller. For instructions, see Cleaning the pickup roller on page 67. See Optional Paper Cassette Unit on page 55 for instructions on installing an optional paper cassette unit.
Problems Using Options
To confirm your options are installed correctly, print a status sheet. See Printing a Status Sheet on page 90 for details.
Feed jam when using the optional paper cassette
Cause The paper is jammed at the optional paper cassette. What to do See Clearing Jammed Paper on page 76 to clear jammed paper.
An installed option cannot be used
Cause The installed option is not defined in the printer driver. What to do For Windows users: You have to make settings manually in the printer driver. See Making Optional Settings on page 113. For Macintosh users: When you have attached or removed options from the printer, you need to start EPSON Status Monitor, or delete and re-register the printer. To delete the printer, use Print Setup Utility (for Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4) or Print Center (for Mac OS X 10.2).
