Starting a Scan

You can start a scan in several different ways: You can use the scanner buttons. Press the button for the type of scan you want. Smart Panel automatically opens and scans your documents. Then follow the easy on-screen instructions to finish your task.
Note: If you are using Windows XP, you will have to select EPSON Smart Panel and Always use this program for this action the first time you press each of the buttons.
Note: In Windows XP, you will see a message the first time you press the ] Start button. Select EPSON Smart Panel, click Always use this program for this action, then click OK.
EPSON Smart Panel opens on your computer.

Scan and Save Scan to E-mail Copy Start
You can start Smart Panel by clicking the icon on your desktop, and use it to perform various types of scans. You can start EPSON Scan from Adobe Photoshop Elements or any other TWAIN-compliant program. You can also start the EPSON Scan program directly from your computer.

Selecting the Scanning Mode
EPSON Scan has four scanning modes:
Restoring Color in Photos
If you have faded photos or negatives, you can use the Color Restoration setting in your software to improve the color of your scan. You can select this setting in Smart Panel or in EPSON Scan.

Smart Panel

To select the Color Restoration setting, follow these steps: 1. Press the { Copy button on the scanner. The Copy Center opens. Full Auto Mode for automatic control of scan settings. Home Mode for scanning film and more control over scan settings, including Color Restoration. Office Mode for scanning text and multiple pages (available only if the optional automatic document feeder [B12B813341] is installed). Professional Mode for full control over all scan settings. To change the scanning mode, choose the mode you want to use from the list box at the top right of the window. To change settings in Full Auto Mode, click the Pause button, then click Options. If youre using Home, Professional, or Office Mode, the options window automatically appears. Then select the settings you want to use for your scan.
Note: The selected mode and settings remain in effect until they are changed.
2. Select your printer. Then select Photo for the Source Type. 3. Select the Type and Size of paper loaded in your printer and the Copy Size you want. 4. Select Color Restoration, then click the Copy button on the screen. Your photo is copied, restored, and printed. (If you need more information, click Help button.)

EPSON Scan

Color Restoration is available in Home and Professional Modes. 1. To select Color Restoration, start EPSON Scan. You see a screen similar to this (the example shows Home Mode).
Scanning Film and Transparencies
The scanner cover has a built-in transparency unit (film adapter). To scan film or negative strips, slides, or transparencies, you need to remove the document mat from the scanner cover and insert the film in a holder. The scanner comes with 3 different film holders: one for 35 mm film or negative strips, one for 35 mm slides, and one for medium-format (120/220) transparencies. 1. Make sure the film adapter cable is connected to the scanner (see the Start Here sheet for instructions). If you need to connect the cable, first turn the scanner off. Then turn it back on again after you connect the cable.

2. Lift the scanner cover all the way up and slide the reflective document mat up and off of the scanner cover. 3. Follow the instructions for the type of film you are scanning: If you are scanning 35 mm film or negative strips or medium-format (120/220) transparencies, slide the film into the corresponding holder, with the films shiny side facing down.

2. Click the Preview button at the bottom of the screen to see your image. 3. Click Image Adjustments. 4. When the Image Adjustments screen appears, select Color Restoration. Then click Close.

Image Adjustments Preview
The Image Adjustments window opens. If you are scanning slides, place the holder on the scanner. Then place the slides in the holder. (Place the slides so the this side to lamp indication is facing down.)

8. Make any of the following adjustments: If your images are faded, click Color Restoration. If you see specks of dust on the preview, click Dust Removal. In Professional Mode, you can also select Grain Reduction. 4. Close the scanner cover. 5. Start EPSON Scan and make sure the correct Document Type is selected: either Color Negative Film, B&W Negative Film, or Positive Film (for slides and transparencies). 6. Click the Preview button to see your images. 7. Click Image Adjustments. 9. Click Close when youre done. 10. Click the Scan button on the screen to scan your images.

Indicator Light

The indicator light (on the ] Start button) indicates the status of the scanner, as described below.
Light On Flashing Flashing Color Green Green Red Status The scanner is ready to scan images. The scanner is initializing (warming up) or is busy scanning. Check the following, then turn your scanner off and back on to reset it: Make sure the transportation lock is in the unlocked position, as shown on page 1. Try restarting your computer and turning the scanner off and then on again.

Scanner Basics

Your First Scan
The ] Start button on your scanner automatically opens EPSON Smart Panel, making it easy for you to scan your images for many different uses. Heres how to use the ] Start button to scan photos and save them on your computer.

Unpack Your Scanner

Make sure you have all the parts shown below for your Epson scanner:

Connect the power cord and AC adapter, as shown.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install each program, including ABBYY FineReader and Presto! BizCard. Note that EPSON Smart Panel installs in several steps.
Raise the scanner cover and place your photo face down on the glass. Make sure the top right corner of the photo is aligned with the top right corner of the scanner. Carefully close the cover.

At the end of the installation, click Exit. When you see the Product Registration screen, register your scanner as instructed. At the last screen, click Done or close your browser. Remove the CD-ROM, then go to section 3 to connect the scanner to your computer.

Connect the AC adapter to the scanner. Then plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.

Macintosh

Insert the scanner software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD drive. The Epson folder opens. If it doesnt open, double-click the Epson CD-ROM icon. Double-click the Epson icon. When you see the message about disabling your antivirus software, click Continue. Read the license agreement, then click Agree. At the Software Installation screen, click Install. Enter your Administrator name and password if necessary. Note: If youre installing on Macintosh OS 9, you may see a prompt to update your Carbon Library. After the CarbonLib installation is complete and youve restarted your system, double-click the Epson icon, then click Install to continue the installation. Note: In Windows XP, you will see a message the first time you press the ] Start button. Select EPSON Smart Panel, click Always use this program for this action, then click OK. EPSON Smart Panel opens on your computer. Press the ] Start button on your scanner.
Remove all the packing tape, but leave the large sticker in place until you are instructed to remove it.
Use the USB cable that came with your scanner. Plug the square end of the USB cable into the scanners USB port. Then plug the flat end into any available USB port on your computer or hub.
IMPORTANT! Leave the sticker in place until you are instructed to remove it
Follow the on-screen instructions to install each program, including ABBYY FineReader and Presto! BizCard. Click Quit to continue, as needed. Note that EPSON Smart Panel installs in several steps. Do not restart your Macintosh until you have installed all the software.

Install the Software

Wait! You must install your software before connecting the scanner to your computer. If you dont already have Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements on your computer, install Photoshop Elements from the CD-ROM included with your scanner. Note: The software works with Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, and XP, and Macintosh OS 9.1 to 9.2 and OS X 10.2.x to 10.3.x. Follow the steps below (for Windows), or the steps in the next column (for Macintosh). The installation process may take several minutes. Be sure to close all open programs and turn off any virus protection programs.
At the end of the installation, click Exit. When you see the Product Registration screen, register your scanner as instructed. At the last screen, click Done or close your browser. Remove the CD-ROM, then follow the instructions below to connect the scanner.

Connect the Scanner

Remove the sticker from the back of the scanner.
Note: Your scanner may not work correctly if you use a USB cable other than the one supplied by Epson or if you connect it through more than one hub.
Turn on the power switch on the side of the scanner.

Insert the scanner software CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD drive. The installer starts automatically. If it doesnt start, do the following:
Windows XP: Click Start, click My Computer, double-click Epson, then double-click Epson again. Windows 98, Me, and 2000: Double-click My Computer, double-click Epson, then double-click Epson again.
You can change the file name and other settings, or use the default settings as shown above.
Locate the transportation lock on the back of the scanner and slide the lock to the left, as shown below.
The scanner turns on and the ] Start button flashes green. It stops flashing and stays green when the scanner is ready.
Click the Scan and Save button. Your photo is automatically scanned and saved to a folder on your computer. The folder opens so you can view your scanned image. For more information about scanning or using the optional automatic document feeder, double-click the Perfection 4180 Reference Guide icon on your desktop.
When you see the message about disabling your antivirus software, click Continue. Read the license agreement, then click Agree.
For Macintosh, restart your system to fully activate the scanner and software.

Using the Scanner Buttons
The scanner buttons make scanning easy. Just place your document face down on the scanner and press the button for the type of scan you want. Smart Panel automatically opens and scans your documents. Then follow the easy on-screen instructions to finish your task. Note: If you are using Windows XP, you will have to select EPSON Smart Panel and Always use this program for this action the first time you press each of the buttons.

Color Restoration is available in Home and Professional Modes.
If you are scanning slides, place the holder on the scanner. Then place the slides face down in the holder. Make sure the top of each image faces the top of the scanner.

Problems?

First, check the ] Start button light on the scanner. Flashing green Warming up or scanning. Green Ready to scan. Make sure the transportation lock is unlocked (see section 3). Try restarting your computer and turning the scanner off and then on again.

Scanning Film

The scanner cover has a built-in film adapter. To scan film or negative strips, slides, or transparencies, you need to remove the document mat from the scanner cover and insert the film in a holder. If the red light is still flashing, contact your dealer or Epson. Make sure the scanner is connected to your computer and the power switch is turned on.

If your problem is listed here, try these suggestions. The New Hardware Wizard Click Cancel and follow the steps in Install the appears on your screen. Software on the other side of this sheet. Disconnect the scanner before installing the software. You see a message about a HI-SPEED USB device in Windows XP. You see an error message when you try to scan, or the scanner doesnt scan. Click the x in the corner of the message to close it. Your scanner will work correctly, although not at maximum speed. Make sure the scanner is connected to your computer, plugged into a power source, and the power switch is turned on. Make sure the transportation lock is unlocked (see section 3). Uninstall your scanner software. Then follow the instructions on the other side of this sheet to reinstall it. You cant scan negatives or slides. Make sure the film adapter cable is connected to the scanner (see section 3) and the reflective document mat is removed. Try using the Home or Professional Mode. Make sure the Document Type or Film Type matches what youre scanning: either Color Negative Film, B&W Negative Film, or Positive Film (for slides and transparencies). Also, make sure the scanner glass is clean and the film holder is positioned correctly.

Click the Scan button on the screen to scan your images.
Restoring Color in Photos
If you have faded photos, slides, or negatives, you can use the Color Restoration setting in your software to bring them back to life. You can select this setting in Smart Panel or in EPSON Scan.

Select your printer. Then select Photo for the Source Type. Select the Type and Size of the paper loaded in your printer and the Copy Size you want. Select Color Restoration, then click the Copy button on the screen. Your photo is copied, restored, and printed. If you need more information, click the Help button.
