|This printer has some excellent quality considering how much it costs. I would recommend this printer to someone who might just be a photo hobbyist.|

|I got this recently and the photo quality printing is good. I like that the ink is split into separate cartridges. I just bought one of these for my son to replace an aging Epson Stylus 740. With the four ink setup, the text printing is very nice. I bought this printer after shopping for ink cartriges for my HP inkjet.|

Since the quality of any particular brand or type of paper may be changed by the manufacturer at any time, EPSON cannot attest to the quality of any non-EPSON brand or type of paper. Always test samples of paper stock before purchasing large quantities or printing large jobs. Poor quality paper may reduce print quality and cause paper jams and other problems. If you encounter problems, switch to a higher grade of paper. Do not load curled or folded paper. Use papers under these conditions: Temperature:59 to 77 F (15 to 25 C) Humidity:40 to 60% RH

Additional Paper Loading Guidelines
Dont load paper above the arrow on the left edge guide. You can run a printer check to determine whether a problem comes from the printer itself or some other source. 1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. Then disconnect the USB cable from the printer. 2. Make sure letter-size or larger plain paper is loaded in the printer. 3. Hold down the ) paper button, then press and release the P power button. Continue holding down the ) paper button until the green P power light starts to flash, then release it. The printer prints a nozzle check pattern. (If the pattern has gaps, you need to clean the print head; see page 8.) 4. Turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then reconnect the cable and turn on your printer and computer. If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the USB cable, or your computer. Its also possible that your software may not be installed correctly. See your Start Here sheet for instructions on reinstalling the printer software. If the check page doesnt print, you may have a problem with your printer. Try the suggestions in your Quick Guide or online Users Guide. If nothing works, contact your dealer or EPSON as described on your Start Here sheet. Load the printable side face-up. Its often brighter or whiter than the other side. Always load paper short edge first, even when printing in landscape mode. Load letterhead or preprinted paper into the printer top edge first. If youre using special media, follow the instructions that came with the media. You can load the following number of sheets of EPSON special media:

Selecting the Correct Paper Type
Your printer automatically adjusts itself for the type of paper you select in your print settings. Thats why the paper Type or Media Type setting is so important. It tells your printer what kind of paper youre using and adjusts the ink coverage accordingly. The table below lists the settings you should choose for your paper:

Replacing an Ink Cartridge
Caution: To ensure good results, use genuine EPSON ink cartridges and dont refill them. Other products may cause damage to your printer not covered by EPSONs warranty. You cannot print if a cartridge is empty. Leave any empty cartridges installed until you have obtained a replacement. Otherwise, the remaining ink in the nozzles may dry out.

Follow the instructions on the screen to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the green P power light flashes.
Cleaning the Print Head
If your printouts are unexpectedly light, or dots or lines are missing, you may need to clean the print head. This unclogs the nozzles so they can deliver ink properly. Print head cleaning uses ink, so clean it only if quality declines. This section explains how to clean the print head using the Head Cleaning utility. You can also clean the print head by holding down the H ink button on the printer for three seconds. (This only works when the red H ink light is off.
Caution: When you dont turn on your printer for a long time, print quality can decline, so turn it on and print a few pages at least once a month to maintain good print quality.
4. When the green P power light stops flashing, make sure paper is loaded in the printer, then do the following: Windows: Click Print nozzle check pattern, then click Print. Macintosh: Click Confirmation, then click Next. The nozzle check pattern prints (see the next section for details). 5. If the nozzle check pattern has no gaps, click Finish. If the pattern has gaps, click Clean to clean the print head again. You can also turn the printer off and wait overnightthis allows any dried ink to softenand then try cleaning the print head again.

Your printout is blurry or smeared.
Make sure the printable side of the paper is face-up. Its usually brighter or whiter than the other side. If youre using double-sided paper and printing heavily saturated or dark images on the front side of the paper, you may notice that smudges or marks appear on the front when you print the second side. If one side of the paper will contain a lighter image or text, print that side first to eliminate marks or smudging. If ink smears on the back of a printout, clean the inside of the printer as described in your online Users Guide.
Your paper doesnt feed correctly or jams in the printer.
If multiple pages feed at once, remove the paper from the sheet feeder, fan the edges to separate the sheets, then reload it. If paper jams, press the paper button for several seconds to clear the jam. If that doesnt work, open the cover and pull the paper out from the front, including small pieces that may have torn off. Reload the paper and press the paper button. Heavily saturated prints may curl, causing a paper jam when printing on both sides of the paper. Use new, smooth, high-quality paper, loaded printable side up. Fan the edges of the stack of paper to separate the sheets. Dont load paper above the arrow mark inside the left edge guide. Place the paper against the right edge, behind the tab. Slide the left edge guide against it, but not too tightly.
If your paper loads incorrectly or jams frequently:
Too many copies are printing. Make sure that the Copies option in your printer software or program is not set for multiple copies.

Important Safety Instructions
Before using your printer, read these safety instructions to make sure you use it safely and effectively:
Be sure to follow all warnings and instructions marked on the printer. Use only the type of power source indicated on the printers label. Connect all equipment to properly grounded power outlets. Avoid using outlets on the same circuit as photocopiers or air control systems that regularly switch on and off. Place the printer near a wall outlet where the plug can be easily unplugged. Placez limprimante prs dune prise de courant o la fiche peut tre dbranche facilement. Do not let the power cord become damaged or frayed. If you use an extension cord with the printer, make sure the total ampere rating of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cords ampere rating. Also, make sure the total ampere rating of all devices plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed the outlets ampere rating. Keep your printer and computer system away from potential sources of electromagnetic interference, such as loudspeakers or cordless telephone base units. Avoid locations that are subject to rapid changes in heat or humidity, shocks or vibrations, or dust. Leave enough room around the printer for sufficient ventilation, leaving at least 3.9 inches between the back of the printer and the wall. Do not place the printer near a radiator or heating vent or in direct sunlight. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond the printer base in all directions. The printer will not operate properly if it is tilted or at an angle. When transporting or storing the printer, dont tilt it, stand it on its side, or turn it upside-down. This may allow ink to leak from the ink cartridges. Turn off and unplug the printer before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth only. Do not spill liquid on the printer.
Caution: Always turn the printer off using the power strip or unplug the printer until the green power button. Dont switch off the power light is off.
Do not block or cover the openings in the printers case or insert objects through the slots. Except as specifically explained in this manual, do not attempt to service the printer yourself.
18 Requirements and Notices
C64 Quick Guide.book Page 19 Friday, August 1, 2003 9:26 AM
Unplug the printer and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions: If the power cord or plug is damaged; if liquid has entered the printer; if the printer has been dropped or the case damaged; if the printer does not operate normally or exhibits a distinct change in performance. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions.
Ink Cartridge Safety Instructions
Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. Be careful when you handle used ink cartridges; there may be ink remaining around the ink supply port. If ink gets on your skin, wash it off with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Do not put your hand inside the printer or touch a cartridge during printing. Do not move the print head by hand. You may damage the printer. Install the ink cartridge immediately after you remove it from its package. Leaving the cartridge unpacked for a long time before use can result in reduced print quality. Do not use an ink cartridge beyond the date printed on the cartridge carton. For best results, use up the ink cartridges within six months of first installing them. Store ink cartridges in a cool, dark place. Store ink cartridges with the bottom of the packaging facing down. After bringing an ink cartridge inside from a cold storage site, allow it to warm up at room temperature for at least three hours before using it. Do not shake an ink cartridge after removing it from its package; this can cause leakage. Do not remove or tear the label on an ink cartridge; this can cause leakage. Do not dismantle the ink cartridges or try to refill them. This could damage the print head. Do not touch the green IC chip on the front of the cartridge. This may affect normal operation and printing. If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and dust and store it in the same environment as the printer. Note that there is a valve in the ink supply port, making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to prevent the ink from staining items that the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area. Before transporting the printer, make sure the print head is capped in the far right position and the ink cartridges are in place. Secure the ink cartridge holder with the included insert to make sure it remains in the proper position. Important Safety Instructions 19
