Great quality prints! Easy to use. Ink last! none The output is fabulous -- and for this price, A2 prints! It is a twitchy machine that will drive you nuts. Print size up to A2 which is an attractive feature Rubber roller is uneven causing colour bleed at end of print

I have been along time using this dot matrix printer. My office use this printer for printing continuous paper. Epson LQ 2180 is one of the dot matrix printers that are reliable. I know the printer is less than five years ago.

When I got my computer back in 1999 I chose the Epson Stylus color 777 printer; I wanted something that would perform very well in printing out my fam... Build Quality: average. When I first took this printer home, it felt nice and solid, and it felt like it would last.

Even if you print exclusively in black and White, it expends color from the color cartridges which you MUST replace if you want to use the printer.

If given the choice would buy it again. Product was super easy to setup right out of the box. Copier and scanner are great to have.

Great Device, Expensive Ink Big fan of the scanner, printer, etc. Waste of ink. I am using this 3-in-1 inkjet with my main desktop computer running Ubuntu linux. All functions work fine.

Before you start, make sure the printer is turned on. Then follow these steps to replace an ink cartridge: 1. Note the color of the Ink Out light which is on or flashing. This is the cartridge that you need to replace. 2. Push the indentation on the ink compartment cover to release the lock and open the cover. INK COMPART. OPEN appears on the control panel display.
10 - EPSON Stylus Pro 10000
3. Locate the slot containing the low or empty ink cartridge (corresponding to the Ink Out light). Press down on the top of the clamp and pull it forward.

Running a Nozzle Check

Note: Perform the steps in this section only if you have disabled the automatic nozzle check in maintenance mode. If you havent, the printer automatically runs a nozzle check and cleans the print head each time it is powered on. Unless you see the message NOZZLE CHECK ERROR in the printers display, the print head nozzles do not need to be cleaned.
The nozzle check prints a pattern of dots that lets you see if any print head nozzles are clogged. If any dots are missing, you can run a cleaning cycle to clear the nozzles. Follow these steps to print the nozzle check: 1. Load a sheet of paper in the printer. (You can print the nozzle check on roll paper, but you will use more paper.) 4. Carefully pull the cartridge straight out of the printer. 2. Press the SelecType button on the control panel repeatedly until you see TEST PRINT MENU on the display. 3. Press the Item button. You see NOZZLE CHECK=PRINT on the display. 4. Press the Enter button. The nozzle check prints. If all the lines on the pattern are complete, with no gaps in the pattern, the print head doesnt need cleaning.
5. Make sure the replacement cartridge is the correct color, and remove it from its package. If youre using Archival ink, shake the cartridge gently before installing it.
If dots are missing from the pattern, as shown below, you need to run a cleaning cycle. See the following section for instructions.

6. Hold the ink cartridge with the arrow mark on the left side and pointing to the rear of the printer. Then insert the ink cartridge into the slot. Dont force the cartridge. 7. Push the cartridge clamp back up. Make sure the corresponding Ink Out light goes off. 8. Close the ink compartment cover.

Aligning the Print Head from the Control Panel
You must use roll paper to print the alignment patterns. Two rows consisting of sets of 15 bars are printed across the width of the paper. It takes about 10 minutes to print both rows. Follow these steps to align the print head using the control panel: 1. Load roll paper that is at least 24 inches wide. 2. Press the SelecType button until HEAD ALIGNMENT MENU is displayed. 3. Press the Item button. PAPER THICK=STD appears on the display. If youre using EPSON paper, leave this setting on STD. If youre using other media, enter the thickness value of the paper in 0.1 mm increments by pressing the + or button. 4. Press the Enter button to save the setting. ADJUST.PATT.=ALL appears on the display. 5. Press the Enter button to print both rows of alignment patterns. If you want to print a single row of alignment patterns, press the + or button until the row number appears. Then press the Enter button. 6. Examine the first row. You see a series of patterns similar to the pattern below across the width of the paper. Determine which bar in the first pattern has the smallest gaps. In the example below, #8 has the smallest gaps.

Running a Cleaning Cycle

Note: Perform the steps in this section only if you have disabled the automatic nozzle check in maintenance mode. If you havent, the printer automatically runs a nozzle check and cleaning cycle each time it is powered on.
If your printed image is unexpectedly light or dots are missing, you may need to run a cleaning cycle. This unclogs the print head nozzles so they can deliver ink properly. The cleaning process uses ink, so run it only if print quality declines. Always run a nozzle check first to confirm that the print head needs cleaning; the nozzle check uses only a small amount of ink. If you have installed the EPSON printer driver and utilities, you can run the Head Cleaning utility. See the EPSON Stylus Pro 10000 Printer Guide for instructions. Follow these steps to run the cleaning cycle from the control panel: 1. Make sure none of the Ink Out lights is on or flashing. (If so, you need to replace the indicated ink cartridge before you can run a cleaning cycle.) 2. Press the Cleaning button and hold it for three seconds. The Pause light flashes as the printer cleans its print head. The cleaning cycle takes about one minute, and does not use any paper.

Caution: To avoid damaging the printer, dont turn it off until the cleaning cycle is finished and the Pause light has stopped flashing.
3. When the Pause light goes off, run another nozzle check to confirm that the print head is clean. You may need to run the cleaning cycle several times to get a clean nozzle check pattern. If the lines on the pattern still appear broken after several cleaning cycles, turn the printer off and leave it overnight, then clean the print head again the following morning. If you still see no improvement, contact EPSON for assistance.
7. Look at the other patterns in the first row to see if the same number consistently has the smallest gaps. If not, choose the number that generally has the smallest gaps. 8. Check the control panel display. Use the + or - button to select the best aligned bar for row #1. Then press the Enter button to register the setting. 9. Repeat steps 6 through 8 for the second row of patterns.

Aligning the Print Head

If banding appears on your printouts, or vertical lines are not straight, you need to align the print head. You can use the Print Head Alignment utility if you have the EPSON printer driver installed (see the EPSON Stylus Pro 10000 Printer Guide for instructions). If not, you can align the print head using the control panel. Both procedures align the head for all modes and resolutions.
12 - EPSON Stylus Pro 10000
10. If you chose a bar that generally, but not consistently, had the smallest gaps, print the row again. Then repeat steps 6 through 8 for that row. Repeat this step until you can choose a bar that is consistently the best aligned in every pattern in the row. 11. The print head is aligned when your printout shows that bar #8 (the current alignment setting) shows the smallest gaps for both rows. Press the Pause button to exit head alignment mode and return to normal printer operation.
Preparing the Printer for Shipment
Follow the instructions below to prepare the printer for shipment: 1. First turn off the printer and make sure the print head is in the home (far right) position. If not, turn the printer back on, wait until the print head moves to the home position, then turn off the printer. 2. Remove the following parts: Ink cartridges

Using Hex Dump Mode

You can use the printers hex dump mode to identify problems if you know how to interpret hex code, or you can fax the hex printout to a technical support representative. Make sure the printer has paper loaded and is turned off. Then follow these steps: 1. Press and hold the Pause button while you press the Power button to turn on the printer. HEX DUMP=PRINT appears on the display. 2. Press the Enter button. 3. Send your problem file to the printer. The data in the print buffer is printed with 16-byte hex data in the left column and corresponding ASCII characters in the right column. If the last data is less than 16 bytes, you need to press the Pause button to print it. 4. When youre done, press the Power button to turn the printer off and exit maintenance mode.

Power cord Interface cable Paper hammock All paper or other media Roll paper spindles Optional Automatic Take-Up Reel (if installed) Optional manual cutter (if installed) After you remove the ink cartridges, store them in separate, resealable bags.

Caution:

Be sure that the printer is off before you remove the ink cartridges. Otherwise the ink valves may not close properly. If for any reason the printer will not be level during shipping, a service technician must drain all ink from the printer before it is shipped.
3. Make sure the ink cartridge clamps and cover are closed. 4. Make sure the casters on the leg assembly are locked, and the two stabilizer knobs are touching the floor.
Transporting or Storing the Printer
Follow these guidelines for transporting or storing the printer: Contact EPSON if you need to store your printer for an extended period (two years for the Photographic Dye Ink model, or six months for the Archival Ink model). A service technician must drain all ink from the printer before it is stored. To ship the printer, you should repack the printer using the original box and packing materials, and you may need to drain the ink from the printer. Then follow the instructions in Preparing the Printer for Shipment on the right. If you are moving the printer a short distance (for example, in the same building), you can move the printer on its stand. Follow the instructions in Moving the Printer on the Stand on page 14.

5. Remove the two wing nuts underneath the printer. Keep them in a safe place.
EPSON Stylus Pro 10000 - 13
6. Have four people lift the printer off of the stand, using the hand grips located at the four corners of the printer. Lift the back of the printer first, tilt it slightly to the front, then slide it back to remove it. 2. Fully insert the upper and lower hammock guides, then roll up the paper hammock.
3. Release the front casters and retract the stabilizer knobs.
Warning: The printer weighs approximately 291 lb (132 kg). Always have four people lift it, using the hand grip areas illustrated above.
7. Keep the printer level while you move it.
Setting Up the Printer After Transporting It
Setting up the printer after transporting it is almost identical to setting it up for the first time. Whenever you set up the printer, see the Unpacking and Assembly Guide, and note the following points: Dont forget to remove any protective material (such as tape from the ink cartridge clamps). If the automatic nozzle check is enabled (default), the printer automatically runs a nozzle check and cleaning cycle when you turn it on. You may also need to realign the print head (see page 12) to ensure good print quality.
4. Carefully roll the printer to its new location. Relock the casters and extend the stabilizer knobs after moving. The first time you start printing after moving the printer, you may need to realign the print head (see page 12) to ensure good print quality. If you see the message NOZZLE CHECK ERROR on the display, turn the printer off and then on again. The printer automatically runs a nozzle check and cleaning cycle whenever it is turned on.

Moving the Printer on the Stand
When you want to move the printer a short distance, such as within the same building or facility, you can roll the printer on its casters. Follow these steps:
Caution: Do not roll the printer on angled or uneven surfaces.
1. Make sure that the power cord, interface cable, roll paper spindles, and all paper are removed, and the roll paper cover and lower cover are closed.

Replacing the Waste Ink System
About every two years of normal usage (25% duty cycle) or after 12,000 B1-size prints, you must have your authorized EPSON servicer replace the waste ink system. This is necessary to prevent damage to the print head and maintain print quality. Parts and labor for this service are not covered under the terms of the limited warranty. You can monitor the status of the waste ink system using the control panel or by checking the Ink Pad number displayed on the nozzle check print. The printer displays the following message on the control panel when the waste ink system is almost full:

* These applications allow for tiling of print pages, therefore allowing you to print beyond the printers maximum page length limit and print to the applications limits. The printer driver must be set for Roll Paper (Banner) mode so that page breaks at the printers maximum page length do not occur (in essence gives you a 0 margin for the bottom of the page). The Stylus Pro 5000/5500 however will give a slight page break at the 44 inch limit as these printers do not support banner mode. Also, printing certain elements from these applications may not utilize color management correctly/properly and may produce output color that is not expected.

NOTE 1:

a. Under Win 9x/Me, the PPD limit is 129 inches. b. Under Windows NT, 2000 and XP, the PPD limit is 1771.6 inches (SP7000/9000 Series) and 1800 inches (SP7600/9600/10000 Series). c. Under Mac OSX/8.x/9.x, the PPD limit is 273.06 inches.

NOTE 2:

Adobe Photoshop has a pixel limitation of 30,000 pixels, which means that a document created @ 300ppi can only reach a maximum page size of 100 inches (H and V). When sending jobs to the printer via the standard nonPostScript print driver, Photoshop looks at the input resolution of the printer driver and adjusts the page size accordingly. All Epson large format printers use 360dpi as the input resolution (this is the resolution data is rasterized at), therefore when printing from Photoshop, the maximum page length you will be able to output to any Epson large format printer using the standard Epson print driver would be 83.33 inches (30,000 pixels / 360dpi). As for the Epson desktop products, they rasterize data at 720dpi, therefore the maximum page length obtainable with the standard print driver would be 41.67 inches (30,000 pixels / 720dpi). Also, under Photoshop 5.x/6.x for the Macintosh and Photoshop 6.x for the PC, the job will end up clipped if it is over the 83.3inch printer page limit. In Photoshop CS, the print job will end up clipped if it is over the 86inch printer page limit; however it will allow you to create a custom paper size of 91inches max. If you are using Photoshop 5.x for the PC, the print job will actually be truncated to fit within the printable area of the printer. Be advised that you may not get a page size error. It may be useful to enable the print preview function of your printer driver (if available) so that you do not waste unnecessary media. The only options for printing beyond the limitations is to save the file and print via an application that does not have the 30,000 pixel limit (may lose color management functions) or print the file through a PostScript RIP (which will allow for longer pages). UPDATE: Photoshop CS allows for a maximum Pixel limit of 300,000 x 300,000 (this would create a 251.5 GB file!!) This allows Photoshop to have a print dimension of 4166.666 x 4166.666 at 72 ppi (Pixels per Inch). At 360 ppi, your max print size would be 833.333 x 833.333. You can still only print 44 x 90.5 Photoshop CS at this point exceeds the capability of our printers. 3

For Windows Users, if you encounter partial/incomeplete prints while having Finest Detail enabled, please disable this setting. It is recommended for low resolution text and line art to sharpen their edges. For photos, this may create a massive print file that is too large for the printer driver to process correctly.
The following examples show how to setup banner printing from Adobe Illustrator 8.x/9.x and CorelDRAW 9 from the PC platform. The Macintosh versions of these applications should be very similar in function. Please refer to your software documentation for additional assistance.

Adobe Illustrator CS:

In this example, we are creating a banner, which is 227 inches (Illustrators max. page setup).
Mac O/S 10.3.3 system is used in this example. Windows versions of this application should be very similar in functionality. Please refer to your software documentation for additional assistance. In this example, a 20 inches wide X 180 inches high document is created. 1. Click on File and New, set up the width and height (sample shows 20 W x 180 H), then click OK.
2. Insert the image you want to print and stretch it until it covers the whole page.
3. Click on File, Print, click Setup, under Tiling click on the drop down arrow, select Tile Full 4. Pages and click the Printer button.
5. When the printer setup window comes up, select your printer name and set the Roll Paper Options to: Roll Paper Banner Roll Paper Banner No Margin ( if printing no margins) 6. In the Copies and Pages section, click on the drop down arrow, select Roll Paper Option. Uncheck Auto Cut then check Save Roll Paper.
7. Then click on Print. This will bring you back to the Print window.
8. This time click on Page Setup, you see the following screen, just click on Continue (If you dont want to see the window again, place a check mark on Dont Show Again box).
9. When Page Setup is open, click on the down arrow for Custom Paper Size.
When creating the custom page size, divide the banner size by a value that will make it less than the printer maximum custom page size (90.5 inches). In this example we take (180/2 = 90), therefore the custom page size created would be 20x90 (inches). 10. Click on New, name the custom size (i.e. 20 x 180 in this example), under Paper Size type in 20 inches for the width and 90 inches for the height, margins should be set to zero (0). Click on Save. Click on the down arrow again in the Custom Paper Size and select Page Attributes.

11. Under Paper Size, click on the drop down arrow and select the custom paper size you created (i.e. 20 X 180) orientation is set to portrait mode. Then click OK.
12. In the Print windows the preview pane will show 2 grids or pages. This indicates that a full image is tiled.
13. Click on General, then click the square on Reverse Order.

4. Click on Print.

NOTE 1: NOTE 2: NOTE 3:
When enabled, the first page will be printed first, instead of the last page first. Or Change the orientation to Reverse, then you dont have to check the Reverse Order. Always select the custom page size last, if not, it will default to other paper sizes. Before printing a large document, make sure you have enough ink to prevent getting an Ink Out message, causing the print job to stop and not completing the entire print.
Adobe Illustrator 8.x/9.x:
In this example, we are creating a banner, which is 227 inches (Illustrators max. page setup). 1. Launch Illustrator and open or place your file in the page layout.
2. Click on File, then Document Setup. The following screen appears.
3. Uncheck Use Print Setup, enable Tile Full Pages and create the page size (in our example we used 44x227 inches).
4. Click, Print Setup. This will bring up the print driver.
5. Click on the Paper Tab. The following appears.
6. Set the Paper Source to Roll Paper (Banner) and also enable Save Roll Paper.
7. When creating the custom page size, divide the banner size by a value that will make it less than the printer maximum custom page size. In this example we take (227/3 = 75.7), therefore the custom page size created would be 44x75.7 inches. The reason for this is to save media.
8. After setting the custom page size and other driver settings (media type, resolution, etc.), click OK. This will bring you back to the document setup. Now double-click the Page tool.
9. The page should now show the following. 10. At this point you can and resize the image to fit within the printable area and print.

CorelDRAW:

In this example, a banner is created at 227 inches. 1. Launch CorelDRAW and open or place an image in your page layout. 2. Adjust the page size and image for the document as shown in the following image.
3. Click on File and Print Setup.
4. Click on the Paper Tab. The following appears.
5. Set the Paper Source to Roll Paper (Banner) and also enable Save Roll Paper.
6. When creating the custom page size, divide the banner size by a value that will make it less than the printer maximum custom page size. In this example we take (227/3 = 75.7), therefore the custom page size created would be 44x75.7 inches. The reason for this is to save media.
7. After setting the custom page size and other driver settings (media type, resolution, etc.), click OK. This will bring you back to the document.

8. At this point, click File then Print. CorelDRAW will then run a pre-flight check and will show the following window.
9. Click on the Layout Tab and enable Print Tiled Pages and set any additional parameters as you see fit.
10. At this point you could check other tab settings (if necessary) and click Print Preview (recommended) if you want to see how the file will be printed or Print to output the file to your printer. For all other applications, please refer to your software documentation for information on maximum custom page sizes for documents, banners or tiling prints.

* - These applications allow for tiling of print pages, therefore allowing you to print beyond the printers maximum page length limit and print to the applications limits. Also, printing certain elements from these applications may not utilize color management correctly/properly and may produce output color that is not expected.
a. Under Win 9x/Me, the PPD limit is 129 inches. b. Under Windows NT, 2000 and XP, the PPD limit is 1771.6 inches (SP7000/9000 Series) and 1800 inches (SP7600/9600/10000 Series). c. Under Mac OS 8.x/9.x, the PPD limit is 273.06 inches.
The following examples show how to setup banner printing from Adobe Illustrator 8.01 and CorelDRAW 9 from the PC platform. The Macintosh versions of these applications should be very similar in function. Please refer to your software documentation for additional assistance.

4. 5. 6.

If the incorrect model name selection appears, shut the unit off and repeat step 3 until the correct model name shows. Once the proper name shows up, power the unit off, wait 15 seconds, close the front cover and power the unit back on. Once the printer is in a ready state, make the appropriate driver selection on your computer system. At this point the printer connection should work.
