Success Story
Groundbreaking photo-quality images from HP Designjet 30

NEIL SNAPE

The HP Designjet 30 offers better photographic images than digital photo lab reproduction. You can reproduce all the tones of a traditional lab print, every detail with the contrast and rich tone that a real photo has to offer. Neil Snape, Editorial & Advertising photographer
Neil Snape is an editorial and advertising photographer based in Paris, France. Snape's specialty is beauty and fashion accessories shoots for worldwide prestigious and recognized firms that include the likes of Cartier, Hermes, L'Oreal, Paco Rabanne, Helena Rubenstein, Sonia Rykiel and Yves Saint Laurent. He has produced images for fashion magazines and advertising around the world as seen in Madame Figaro, Vogue, Biba, Jalouse, Elle, and Marie Claire, among others. Neil Snapes longstanding success in the ultra-competitive sector of high-end fashion and advertising media, is not just about artistic creativity. Ambition, sheer hard work, and the constant strive for perfection are also key elements, so when HP invited him to test their multi-format HP Designjet 30 photographic-quality printer, he was more than happy to collaborate with a world leader in printing technology. Neil Snape prides himself in using the best equipment available, and has used the HP Designjet 30 to illustrate proofs to some of the worlds top Art Directors. "I would like to stress how impressed people are with the HP Designjet 30 output. When the Art Director at Madame Figaro, whom I have known for years, saw the six-page beauty layout printouts, he had to pick them up to closely inspect the quality of the proofs. He exclaimed that he rarely gets Chromalins of this quality anymore! I assured him that these were inkjet prints, and in the near future he could equip his production department with these printers.

This is an Art Director originally from Glamour magazine in England, then Assouline Editions, Paris Vogue, and now Madame Figaro. He is someone who has good judgement and taste, says Snape. "You always expect the best from HP, yet the image quality of this printer really does amaze me. The HP Designjet 30 produces photographic quality prints you would normally expect from a photo lab. If you compare them to a C-print side-by-side, you cant tell which is which." Snape believes that he now has the professional photographers ideal printing solution. "No other printer has given me color and tonal range this exceptional, and consistent in all light conditions, says Snape. The world of fashion and advertising is one of the toughest to please and Neil Snape needs to deliver show-stopping images time and again. He places great importance on color reliability, and has tested output on a variety of HP media and in different light conditions. He was very impressed with how the printer compared to his experiences with competitor products, " you can use the printer with any media you choose from and you get consistent print-to-print results thanks to the embedded automatic close loop color calibration of the HP Designjet 30. A truly unique feature these HP graphics arts printers have, putting them in a league of their own." Snape assures, "I'm hired based on the quality of images in my portfolios in front of art directors and clients, I will now be chosen more often thanks to the HP Designjet 30.
Neil Snape thoroughly tested the HP Designjet 30 on his Mac workflow, using the new HP Premium Plus Photo and Proofing Gloss up to A3+\B+ size. "The gloss on HPs new media has the same appearance as any glossy photo -consistent gloss over the entire surface that has that liquid wet look at all viewing angles," says Neil Snape. The dedicated optional RIPs also offer automatic Pantone calibration, offset emulation and CMYKPlus to round out the workflow to facilitate press simulations. The HP Designjet 30 and 130 series offer new, fade-resistant* inks for lightfast color stability, and media flexibility through 3 different media paths. "It is quite amazing! I suppose it is a combination of the new HP Premium Plus Photo and Proofing Gloss media, HPs fade-resistant inks and the writing system of the HP Designjet 30, that ultimately reproduces faithful photographs rendered exactly as intended. It also provides highly reliable and efficient performance, exceeding any other printer I have ever used," he claims. "This is the first printer ever that consistently gives me photographic-quality images that I am absolutely happy with. The HP Designjet 30 produces a print equal to a color darkroom print in every detail and aspect. You get a print each and every time that is just beautiful. You can count on it!" concludes Neil Snape.

*Preliminary results from tests conducted by Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. indicate that prints made with HP No. 85 ink cartridges and HP Premium Plus Photo and Proofing Gloss paper may be displayed indoors under glass for approximately 70 years before noticeable fading and staining will occur

Challenge

Print photo-quality images inhouse. Obtain accurate and consistent color in all light conditions. Color consistency on any media and from printer to printer. Print fade-resistant* images for exhibitions and galleries.

Solution

Adopt HP Designjet 30 printer series. Exploit new, HP Premium Plus Photo and Proofing Gloss.

Results

Image quality that impresses customers and can be compared to photo lab print quality. Consistent color from print to print, and in different light conditions. Lightfast color stability.
