A low-priced color inkjet multifunctional product with standard fax, convenience copy and PC-based print, fax and scan functions, the HP Ofcejet 5510 performed well in BLIs three-month evaluation. For example, it demonstrated perfect reliability, completing BLIs 1,000-impression durability test without any malfunctions or misfeeds. In addition, it produced very good output quality 02 overall in both print and copy modes. BLI test technicians cited in particular the units outstanding output for color photographs, especially when printing on HP Premium Plus Photo Paper in Best mode. In the units Best mode, the rated speed is 1 ppm in color and 0.9 ppm in black and the output resolution is 600 x 600 with PhotoREt. In Normal mode, which is the default mode, the rated speed is 3.5 ppm in color and 7.5 ppm in black at 600 x 600 dpi, while FastDraft mode provides rated speeds of 12 ppm in color and 17 ppm in black at 300 x 300 dpi. Business graphics produced by the Ofcejet 5510 were also excellent, with color charts and graphs vibrant and eye-catching. Black output also received BLIs highest image quality rating for all types of output evaluated in copy mode (text, line art, halftones and solids) and for all text, line art and solids in print mode. Based on its good overall performance in the tests, especially its color output quality, BLI recommends the HP Ofcejet 5510 for those in need of a color inkjet printer for personal or home ofce use for low-volume faxing, printing, scanning and convenience copying.

Output Quality

The Ofcejet 5510 produced very good output quality, earning BLIs highest image quality rating for color business graphics and color photographic images in both print and copy modes, primarily due to Hewlett-Packards photo resolution enhancement technology (HP PhotoREt), which allows for multiple colors per pixel to be laid down, resulting in smooth edges and gradations even on regular bond paper. Black output also received BLIs highest image quality rating for all types of output evaluated in copy mode (text, line art, halftones and solids) and for all but halftones in print mode.

Economy

BLIs pricing analysis reveals that the HP Ofcejet 5510 is priced lower than the average for inkjet multifunctional units with similar standard features (i.e., fax-enabled multifunctional printers supporting legal-size output) and cost per page for supplies is competitive for tested inkjet multifunction devices that employ black and tri-color ink cartridges.

Ease of Use

BLI test technicians found the HP Ofcejet 5510 easy to use, both from its uncluttered and clearly marked control panel and from the well-laid-out print driver and bundled software. LEDs on the control panel alert the user to check the ink cartridges or paper supply and inform users of error conditions. And at the desktop, the user receives pop-up messages and can check status via the status window of HP Director. Also contributing to good overall ease of use is the units good documentation and simple procedures for loading paper and removing misfeeds. Replacing the black and tri-color ink cartridges was also a simple and clean procedure.

The Ofcejet 5510s fax functions are easy to use, with simple procedures for sending a fax via the 33.6-Kbps modem. The HP HP OFFICEJET 5510 CONTROL PANEL Ofcejet 5510 also includes a PC fax driver that enables the user to send electronic les to fax destinations from their PC. Other fax features include ve one-touch keys and 70 speed-dial codes.

Software

The HP Ofcejet 5510 comes with an easy-to-use scan driver than enables users to scan pictures or documents to be saved as a le on the local workstation or within the HP Photo and Imaging Gallery software application, which allows users to view, enhance, crop, rotate, ip, resize, sharpen, remove red eye and adjust color and brightness. In addition, the bundled HP Scanning software incorporates IRIS OCR software to convert scanned text documents into editable text.
