Network Printing

Network Connection

Theory
To connect your printer in a TCP/IP network environment, you must make sure that the internal network addresses in the printer have been set. In many cases, you have to enter only a unique IP address. However, you may also have to enter a subnet mask and/or a gateway (router) address, depending on your network configuration requirements.

Making the Connection

Ethernet Interface
An RJ45 connector can be used as the Ethernet interface for this printer. When connecting your printer to an Ethernet network, the tasks you perform depend on how you plan to set the printers IP (Internet Protocol) address. Printers are shipped with a preset IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. IP AddressA unique identifier for each device on a TCP/IP network. Subnet MaskA filter used to determine what subnet an IP address belongs to. GatewayA node on a network that serves as an entrance to another network. Since the IP address for each PC and printer on your network must be unique, you usually need to modify this preset address so it doesnt conflict with any other IP address or your network or any attached network. You can do this in one of two ways. Each is explained in detail in the following sections. Using DHCP Setting the address manually

Network printing terms are described below. AppleTalk Bonjour BOOTP DDNS DHCP FTP HTTP IPP IPX/SPX LPD/LPR SLP SNMP Port9100 SMTP This chapter contains descriptions on the network printing terms and the IPP printing methods.
A generic name for the protocol suite developed by Apple Computer for computer networking.

Bonjour

Macintosh network technology for automatically detecting devices connected to the network and for specifying settings. Previously called Rendezvous, the name was changed to Bonjour starting with Mac OS X v10.4.
BOOTP (Bootstrap Protocol) is an Internet protocol that enables a diskless workstation to discover (1) its own IP address, (2) the IP address of a BOOTP server on the network, and (3) a file that can be loaded into memory to boot the workstation. This enables the workstation to boot without requiring a hard or floppy disk drive.

DDNS (Dynamic DNS)

DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) is technology for automatically assigning dynamically assigned IP addresses to fixed domains. The recent availability of always-on Internet connections has resulted in an increased number of users turning their home computers into publicly accessible Web servers. The IP address supplied by the Internet service provider changes with each connection, complicating public access to the Internet. By using a DDNS service, home computers can normally be accessed with a fixed host name.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. With dynamic addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it connects to the network. In some systems, the device's IP address can even change while it is still connected. DHCP also supports a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses. Dynamic addressing simplifies network administration because the software keeps track of IP addresses rather than requiring an administrator to manage the task. This means that a new computer can be added to a network without the hassle of manually assigning it a unique IP address.

Configure Crown Port+

In the Configure Crown Port+ dialog box, specify the advanced settings for the Crown port.
Parameter Status update interval
Default Setting Description 5 seconds Specify the interval that Crown Print Monitor+ updates the print manager with the status of the printer connected to this port. Specify the length of time to wait for an answer from the printer until Crown Print Monitor+ notifies the print manager that there is no response from the printer.
Status request 10 seconds timeout
Parameter Send request timeout
Default Setting Description 60 minutes Specify the length of time to wait for the print job to be sent until Crown Print Monitor+ returns the command to the Microsoft Print Spooler. If the job has been sent through a Windows 2000/NT4 server and the time specified with the timer is exceeded, the print job is automatically stopped and deleted from the system. If the job has been sent through a workstation and the time specified with the timer is exceeded, the Windows XP/2000/NT4 Print Spooler appears and displays a message, requesting confirmation to attempt answering again or to cancel the operation. Whether or not there is an answer, the print job is stopped and deleted from the system.

Using PageScope Web Connection
About PageScope Web Connection
This chapter provides information on PageScope Web Connection, an HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)-based web page that resides in your printer and that you can access using your Web browser. This page gives you instant access to printer status and the most frequently used printer configuration options. Anyone on your network can access the printer using their web browser software. In addition, with the proper password, you can change the configuration of the printer without leaving your PC. Users who are not given passwords by the administrator can still view the configuration settings and options but are not able to save or apply changes.

Labels

A sheet of labels consists of a face sheet (the printing surface), adhesive, and a carrier sheet: The face sheet must follow the plain paper specification. The face sheet surface must cover the entire carrier sheet, and no adhesive should come through on the surface. You can print continuously with label sheets. However, this could affect the media feed, depending on the media quality and printing environment. If problems occur, stop the continuous printing and print one sheet at a time. Try printing your data on a sheet of plain paper first to check placement. Check your application documentation for more information on printing labels. Maintaining the Printer
Read all caution and warning labels carefully, making sure to follow any instructions contained in them. These labels are located on the inside of the printers covers and the interior of the printer body. Handle the printer with care to preserve its life. Abuse handling may cause damage and void your warranty. If dust and paper scraps remain on the inside or outside of the printer, printer performance and print quality will suffer, so the printer should be cleaned periodically. Keep the following guidelines in mind.

WARNING!

Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and disconnect all interface cables before cleaning. Do not spill water or detergent into the printer; otherwise the printer will be damaged and an electric shock may occur.
The fuser unit is hot. When the right side cover is opened, the fuser unit temperature drops gradually (one hour wait time). Be careful when cleaning the inside of the printer or removing media misfeeds, as the fuser unit and other internal parts may be very hot. Do not place anything on top of the printer. Use a soft cloth to clean the printer. Never spray cleaning solutions directly on the printers surface; the spray could penetrate through the air vents of the printer and damage the internal circuits. Avoid using abrasive or corrosive solutions or solutions that contain solvents (such as alcohol and benzene) to clean the printer. Always test any cleaning solution (such as mild detergent) on a small inconspicuous area of your printer to check the solutions performance. Never use sharp or rough implements, such as wire or plastic cleaning pads. Always close the printers covers gently. Never subject the printer to vibration. Do not cover the printer immediately after using it. Turn it off and wait until it cools down.

Decreased print quality may result if the surface of the image transfer belt or the transfer roller is touched. Be careful not to touch the surface of the image transfer belt or transfer roller.

The actual life may differ (be shorter) depending on the printing conditions (coverage, paper size, etc.), differences in the printing method, such as continuous printing or intermittent printing (when print jobs of one page are often printed), or the type of paper used, for example, thick paper. In addition, the life will be affected by the temperature and humidity of the operating environment.
