BLI RECOMMENDATION

An excellent value that earned Good or better ratings in every aspect of performance evaluated, the Kyocera KM-8030, an 80-ppm multifunctional product offering standard copy and optional network print and scan capabilities, gave a strong performance overall in BLIs rigorous two-month laboratory evaluation. In addition to demonstrating excellent reliability in its 500,000-impression test, it produced output that was rated Very Good overall in print mode and Good in copy mode. Distinguished among its competitors by its high-capacity duplexing document feeder that scans both sides of originals in a single pass, resulting in faster document feeder speeds, the KM-8030 is also a productive unit. Complementing its solid performance is an impressive feature set that includes the highest maximum paper capacity of competitive units and optional integration with KYOcapture, a server-based application that enhances the units scan capabilities by enabling customers to automate workow. And with a suggested retail price thats almost $10,000 lower than the average for comparably equipped competitive units and an estimated cost per page thats the lowest of Segment 5 models tested, the KM-8030 is an excellent value that BLI highly recommends for users with monthly volumes up to 425,000 impressions.

Performance Overview

Reliability
EXCELLENT The KM-8030 proved to be a highly reliable product in BLIs two-month, 500,000-impression lab test, with only one service call required for a problem encountered with the transfer section, which became lodged in the unit (the same occurred with the KM-6030) at 402,000 impressions into the test. However, Kyocera Mita had already developed a modied transfer component to address this issue, which proved to very effective when installed in BLIs test machines. After installation of the new part, both Kyocera models operated without incident for the remainder of their scheduled test periods (98,000 impressions on the KM-8030 and 237,507 impressions on the KM-6030). Moreover, upon completion of the tests, to further conrm the efcacy of the new part, BLI test technicians repeatedly caused paper jams requiring the opening and closing of the transfer section (the apparent cause of the problem) and no problems were encountered, conrming that the new design has resolved this issue. Aside from this one incident, the KM-8030 misfed 12 times during the test, for a misfeed rate of one per 41,666 impressions. According to Kyocera Mita, models manufactured as of July contain the new part and the replacement part is available should a customer encounter the problem with models released prior to the development of this modication. The units PM interval of 500,000 impressions is higher than that of many models in the group. The units amorphous silicon drum has a life of 4,800,000 impressions, which is more than twice the average for units in this range and higher than all but one competitive unit. Unlike competitive products, which are typically backed by a 90-day warranty, the Kyocera KM-8030 is backed by a one-year warranty. The unit has vents on the front of the device, eliminating the need for clearance behind the unit. VERY GOOD + + An administrator can specify either print or copy jobs as having priority. Up to nine copy jobs can be programmed while another copy job or a print job, is in progress. Five print jobs appear in the job list at a time; additional print

Multitasking

+, and represent positive, negative and neutral attributes, respectively.
jobs were downloaded to the device and appeared in the list as soon as one of the jobs ahead of it was printed. + Testing demonstrated that at least ve slots will always be available for copy jobs, even after sending 10 print jobs to the device. Although the user must press the Reserve Next Copy key in order to program a copy job while another copy job is in progress, this step is not required to program a copy job while a print job is in progress. Programming of the next copy job can begin after all the pages of the previous job have been scanned. The Interrupt key can be used to interrupt either a copy or print job in order to run an immediate copy job with features that include the document feeder, duplexing, nishing and multiple sets. The user has to wait for the unit to stop before programming the interrupt job. And while an interrupted print job automatically resumes after a default timeout, the user must press the Start key to resume an interrupted copy job. A copy job cannot be programmed ahead during a scan job. VERY GOOD

Administrative Utilities

The Kyocera KM-8030 comes with an abundance of useful utilities for monitoring and managing the device on the network. The units embedded Web utility (Kyocera Command Center) enables viewing of device status, conguration and paper supply, and allows setup of device and network settings. KM-NET for Clients enables monitoring of device status. KM-NET Viewer allows for device discovery and monitoring and management of all devices on the networkKyocera, as well as non-Kyocera modelswhich can be sorted by name or IP address. BLI test technicians noted that it gives an administrator the exibility to display signicantly more information regarding products than what is provided as the default. KM-NET Viewer for Web provides the same capabilities but with this version, the software resides on one PC on the network and all users can access it via a Web browser. The Web utility allows direct printing of PDF les, without requiring the application they were created in. Also included is a software utility that enables direct printing of PDF, PostScript, PRN and Kyoceras PRESCRIBE les without having to have the application installed on the PC. With this utility,

Kyocera Command Center Web Utility
Several of Many Utilities Provided for the KM-8030
multiple les can be sent at once, with the user able to change settings such as quantity, duplexing, N-up printing, resolution, etc. + The Printer Disk Manager is a utility that helps administrators manage stored print jobs, hard drives and RAM disks; and KM-NET@Service Gateway collects meter counts from Kyocera products on the network and sends them via e-mail to a location from which invoices can be prepared. + Kyoceras Web utility has a setting to enable compatibility with HP Web Jetadmin.

Feedback to Workstations

VERY GOOD
+ KM-NET for Clients can be installed on users workstations to enable them to receive pop-up messages indicating error or warning conditions and also to check device status. + In addition, icon alerts for KM-NET for Clients appear on the taskbar to alert the user to error conditions, at which point the user can open the utility to obtain more specic information. + Audible alerts can be enabled. + An administrator can specify the conditions for which users will receive popup messages.
The Web page also contains information on the approximate paper supply (empty, 30%, 50%, 100%), but not the paper size, in each of the drawers. Paper size information is available via KM-NET Viewer and KM-NET for Clients. Status information for other consumables (toner, etc.) is not available.
+ Administrators and users can also access KM-NET Viewer and KM-NET for Clients to obtain status information on any product on the network. Print job status, such as a job completion notication, is not provided.
+ E-mail notications of an error or warning condition (such as consumables depleted) can be sent to up to three recipients. The print driver does not include a paper gauge, which would allow users to check available paper supply at the point of need ( i.e., before sending a job).

Ease of Network Setup

Two separate network connections are required for installationone for network printing and one for scanning. This involves the assignment and management of an additional IP address and in installation locations where there is only one network connection, customers will either need to install a hub or another network drop. Network settings can be congured from the control panel as well as from the Web utility. The drivers CD auto-launches upon insertion into the drive and walks the user through the installation process, which was simple. During the installation process, the administrator does not have to enter the units IP address. If the address has already been assigned, the administrator can select Search to nd the device on the network, upon which it can simply be selected to automatically create the port. The fact that Kyoceras proprietary KX driver combines three driversPCL 5e, PCL XL (Kyoceras emulation of PCL 6) and KPDL (Kyoceras PostScript emulation) into onemeans that only one driver needs to be installed, simplifying installation. A selection in the drivers can be used to have the system automatically detect any congured accessories. Whereas with some systems, all or most of the necessary software and utilities can be installed at one time, each of the Kyocera KM-8030s multiple utilities must be installed and set up separately, which complicates installation and use. GOOD

Print Drivers

Overall, BLI likes Kyoceras proprietary driver, which combines three emulationsPCL XL (a PCL 6 emulation), PCL 5e and KPDL (Kyoceras PostScript emulation)into one, as it allows for more streamlined installation and uses less resources on the network. While many users may never switch between emulations, it should be noted that for those who do, switching is not convenient, as it cannot be done from within an application; the user must close or minimize the application and access the print driver through the Windows Start menu and then change the emulation under the Device Settings tab in the Properties screen of the driver (which requires nine clicks of the mouse).

KPDL Driver

PCL 5e Driver
+ With Kyoceras all-in-one driver, the appearance of the drivers is identical which makes navigating the menu screens easier for those who switch between emulations. Not all of the features necessary to specify typical print jobs are on the main screen of the driver.
Note, however, that BLI was able to preview new drivers, available in November, that have a more user-friendly interface and include most typical features (with the exception of nishing) on the main screen. Also in the new drivers, the settings for the print job are displayed without having to select to review settings. In addition, users can switch between a graphical representation of the device that depicts the selected paper source (though it does not allow for point-and-click selection of desired paper tray or output destination) and a graphical depiction of the output based on selected settings.
+ The drivers offer a good feature set that includes secure print and proof print (when congured with the optional hard drive), the ability to create up to 25 proles to save the settings for frequently used jobs and the ability to pull from up to three paper drawers for a single job. In addition, the Kyocera Print System V print controller includes the KX SpoolCenter utility, which enables users to perform tandem and cluster printing, as well as scheduled print. + Advanced features of the driver (not included in the PCL 5 driver) include PRESCRIBE. PRESCRIBE is Kyoceras page design and control language, which enables graphics, logos and forms (including multipart forms) to be
created independently of the system and saved and updated on the device. In addition, PRESCRIBE is used for complex printing jobs. + The system supports simultaneous RIP and Print, meaning that jobs can begin printing immediately before the entire job is processed and a second print job can be processed while another is printing. + File size remained the same when producing multiple sets regardless of whether Collate was selected from the print screen within an application or from the properties screen of the driver.

In testing, a graphic image contained within BLIs Word test document did not print when output using the KPDL driver. This was corrected by enabling GDI mode in the driver. Note that GDI mode does not rely on PC resources for processing; it is the recommended mode for printing graphics. EXCELLENT
Applications Compatibility
+ No problems were experienced with any of the applications used in the applications compatibility tests. Units are tested for compatibility on Windows 2000 platforms with Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000, Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 using 25 application test les, which contain text, graphics, halftone images, tables, etc., enabling BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, le processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.

Scan Functions

+ Congured as tested with the Network Scan System, the Kyocera KM-8030 offers scan to e-mail, scan to FTP, scan to the desktops of users on the network, as well as TWAIN scanning. + The units industry-leading 200-sheet document feeder scans both sides of originals in a single pass, contributing to more efcient scanning. + The KM-8030 also allows for scanning to up to 100 electronic mailboxes on the device, which was easy to do. Print jobs can also be sent to storage on the device. Stored documents can be renamed, reordered and printed, and documents and mailboxes can be password-protected. Multiple jobs in a box can all be released at once. + The Kyocera Network Scan system includes a single-user license for ScanSoft PaperPort Deluxe 9.0, while additional user licenses are optional. PaperPort Duluxe enables users to receive documents directly to their PC, con-
vert scanned documents into editable text via OCR, and organize and manage documents. + The system supports optional integration with KYOcapture, a server-based document capture application that provides links to a range of applications and enables users to automate workow by scanning certain types of documents directly into the appropriate applications from the control panel. Unlike with some systems, scanning to multiple types of destinations in one session (e-mail, desktop) cannot be accomplished in the same session with the network scan option. This capability is, however, available when congured with KYOcapture. Although the system does not support LDAP for a direct link to addresses on a network mail server, according to Kyocera Mita an LDAP Converter utility, available as a free download from Kyoceras Web site, provides essentially the same capability for users to search for and select addresses residing on a corporate mail server directly from the control panel of the copier. Unlike with other units tested, the KM-8030 enables each user to have his or her own destinations (the appropriate destinations are displayed after the user enters identication information). Destinations can be programmed remotely via either the Web utility or the Address Book utility. The Address Book utility enables an administrator to copy address books from one Kyocera product to another. Destinations can also be entered at the control panel via a QWERTY keypad with average-size keys. An administrator can specify the le size to be allowed for scanning. Files that exceed the established limit are sent as several smaller les. VERY GOOD/GOOD

Print / Copy Quality

Output produced by the Kyocera KM-8030 earned Very Good ratings for text and line art in both print and copy modes. Although halftones were slightly grainy in both modes, they were rated Good overall. And while solids appeared slightly washed out in copy mode, they were good overall, with consistent coverage. VERY GOOD/GOOD
Print / Copy Productivity
The KM-8030s efciency rate when printing BLIs job stream is among the highest for similarly equipped models tested to date.
The KM-8030s print efciency is the highest for similarly equipped models tested to date in duplex mode and competitive in simplex mode. The KM-8030s rst-copy time from the platen, at 4.1 seconds, is the fastest for competitive units, and its rst-copy time from the document feeder, at 6.2 seconds, is competitive. The KM-8030s copy efciency is the highest for similarly equipped units tested to date in 2:2 mode and competitive in 1:1 and 1:2 modes. The units document feeder scans both sides of originals in a single pass, without having to invert them, which results in faster document feeder speeds for two-sided originals when copying and scanning. The units manufacturer-rated warm-up time, at 30 seconds, is signicantly faster than that of all competitive units. GOOD

Ease of Use

The KM-8030s control panel consists of an 8-1/2" x 3-1/4" LCD touch-screen display, which is easy to read and features a brightness/contrast adjustment that allows users to easily adjust the display to accommodate different lighting. The control panel is the rst on units in this speed range equipped with a mechanism that allows users to tilt it 35 degrees to accommodate various lighting conditions and contributing to Section 508 compliance. BLI technicians like the design of the tilt mechanism. Although a brief description of selected features appears on the display, the control panel lacks a Help key.
Kyocera KM-8030 Control Panel
Not all of the features required to specify typical copy jobs are programmable from the main screen, and some, such as duplexing, were not clearly labeled or easily found. Some features, including booklet copy, cover mode and duplexing, which are available in the User Choice tab, are duplicated in the Function tab, which may cause confusion among users. Consequently, BLI technicians found the touch-screen display confusing. The ability to customize the control panel to include frequently used features on the main screen will enhance ease of use; BLI recommends that users take the time to do so. Another nice feature enables walk-up users to easily register features as shortcuts that appear on the right-hand side of the touch screen, simply by selecting the register as shortcut key and then selecting one of the three shortcut keys. The job build function makes it easy to program jobs that apply different settings to each section of a document (e.g., different paper types or sizes). When a job is running, the touch screen displays the parameters for the job, i.e., paper size and output. Programming booklets was a simple procedure. The Pause touch key enables users to increase or decrease the number of sets in the current copy job, thereby eliminating the need for users to feed documents through the document feeder again if they need more or less sets than were originally programmed. The control panel offers a good range of information regarding jobs. Users can view the job queues for current and reserved copy, print and scan jobs by pressing the Document Management key and, by pressing the Document Properties touch key within the Print Status tab, can view details of current and pending jobs, including user name, the date and time a job was received at the device, the paper size designated for the job, the number of pages in the original document, the number of sets and the tray in use. Users can also view a job history log that includes up to 1,000 jobs. The user can delete jobs (after being prompted to conrm the desire to do so), and pause/release selected jobs in the list and move a job up in the queue, albeit only one step at a time. The KM-8030 offers very good meter count information. While it lacks a mechanical meter, its electronic meters provide total meter count, and separate counts for print, copy and scan pages, which can be viewed from the control panel (but not while a job is in progress) and from the Web page and printed. The scan meter count lists the number of documents fed through the document feeder for copying and documents scanned. In addition, the KM-NET for Ac-

counting utility enables administrators to view, print and export meter counts from their desktops. + + Loading paper into the KM-8030s sturdy, well-built paper drawers is simple. Procedures for adjusting the user-adjustable drawers to accommodate various paper sizes are also easy, requiring the movement of sliding width and length guides, which are preferred to removable guides, which can be easily lost or can cause misfeeds if users fail to reinsert them properly. The drawers are also equipped with electronic sensors that automatically detect changes in the paper size and reect them in the control panel so copies are output onto the correct paper size. The paper size in the bypass tray is also automatically detected. Procedures for removing misfeeds on this unit are cumbersome. BLI technicians noted that three sections of the unit (the paper conveyor, duplex unit and paper feeder) must be pulled out to access misfeeds. When a misfeed occurs that requires that the user access the paper area, the two 1,500-sheet paper drawers must be opened. Moving the nisher when it was required to access a misfeed was found to be difcult. Although two graphical displays appear on the control panel to help users clear misfed sheets, one of them is not dynamic (as misfeeds are cleared, the display continues to illustrate how to remove misfeeds from areas of the unit that no longer contain misfeeds) and the one that is didnt always reect when misfeeds were cleared. Further, the instruction on the display to turn a particular knob failed to indicate the knob needed to be turned more than 20 times (this apparently cycles paper through the paper path). Though this information is printed on a label on the knob itself, users may not notice it, which occurred in BLI testing and resulted in misfed paper becoming mangled inside the machine (which, according to Kyocera service, may have resulted in the service call involving broken tabs on the conveyor unit). BLI test technicians praised the units procedures for replacing the toner cartridge, which are very simple and clean. A carrying handle on the cartridge keeps the user clean when the cartridge needs to be replaced. VERY GOOD + The KM-8030 offers a very good feature set that includes a standard paper capacity of 4,050 sheets, plus a 100-sheet bypass, which is higher than that of most competitive units.

Feature Set

Paper capacity is expandable to 8,150 sheets from six sources, which is the highest capacity for units in this class. Some competitive models offer a maximum of ve sources. The standard document feeder scans both sides of originals in a single pass, resulting in very fast document feeding and scanning speeds, and holds 200 sheets, which is twice the capacity of all competitive units. Standard memory capacity consists of 128 MB of RAM and a 40-GB hard drive. The KM-8030 is offered with an optional ve-bin mailbox or a 3,000-sheet nisher. The modular nisher gives users the exibility of purchasing a less expensive nisher and upgrading it with an optional booklet folding unit and two-/three-hole punch. The nisher can staple up to 50 sheets per set and the booklet folder unit can fold and staple up to 16 sheets to produce booklets of up to 64 pages. In addition to offering features that would be expected for a unit in this range (such as image overlay, the ability to save the settings for up to eight jobs, a choice of languages for the display, cover and sheet insertion), this model also offers 1,000 copy control codes and the ability to produce up to 9,999 impressions in a single run, both of which are higher than that of some competitors. NOT RATED
Security/Accessibility Features
The control panel has a locking mechanism that allows it to be tilted to an angle of 35 degrees, enabling easier access and contributing to compliance with Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The KM-8030 is currently under evaluation for Common Criteria validation, an international security standard. The print drivers offer secure print, enabling a user to send a job to the device, which will not be printed until the user enters his passcode. Kyoceras secure network interface features IP address ltering in order to restrict access the device by unauthorized users. In addition, various ports can be closed to restrict access to the device and the network. An optional data security kit deletes data stored on the units hard drive either on demand or after each copy, print and scan job is completed. Network user authentication, which requires users to log on with their network user name and password to gain access to the device, is available, albeit only when the unit is congured with the KYOcapture solution.
The optional Equitrac Secure Print Solution offers secure print release functions using an access card, PIN or other options. EXCELLENT

Toner Yield

Tested toner yield of the KM-8030 is signicantly higher than the average and, in fact, the highest for Segment 5 models tested. This unit also features EcoCopy and EcoPrint modes, which reduce toner consumption by approximately 30 percent, according to Kyocera Mita. EXCELLENT
The Kyocera KM-8030 is the lowest priced of comparably equipped models in its speed range. Indeed, it is priced more than 21 percent lower (almost $10,000 lower) than the average for units in this group. Moreover, cost per page for supplies, based on estimated pricing, is better than the average. Indeed, its the best of currently available tested Segment 5 models. Its solid overall performance in the tests, combined with its aggressive acquisition and supplies pricing, make the KM-8030 an excellent value.

Job Stream: The unit completed the job stream in 37.06 seconds, running at 30.76 ppm, which equates to an efciency rate of 38.45%.
BLIs job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF les, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of trafc a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the les are sent to the printer as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last le exits the device. Job stream efciency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the unit operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efcient the unit.
Booklet Print The unit printed, folded and saddle-stitched 30 sets of a 16-page PDF le output in booklet mode from the KPDL driver in 12 minutes and 7.76 seconds, running at 39.57 ppm, which equates to an efciency rate of 49.47%. RELIABILITY CERTIFIED
Test Objective Subject one Kyocera KM-8030 multifunctional document imaging device to a 2,000,000impression BLI reliability test.

Test Conducted

BLI test technicians operated the Kyocera KM-8030 at Kyocera Mita Americas rated monthly volume for a total of 2,000,000 impressions, with 50 percent of the volume consisting of copy jobs and 50 percent consisting of print jobs. Based on Kyocera Mitas rated maximum monthly duty cycle of 500,000 impressions, the KM-8030 was tested over a course of 100 business days. Designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday, BLIs test included a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, with on/off cycles, throughout each day. In addition, all of the units configured paper sources, two of which accommodated legal- and ledger-size stock, and three of which accommodated letter-size stock, were used during the test, as was the finisher. The reliability evaluation also included testing of the document feeder/scanner for an additional 10 percent (or 200,000 scans) of the tested volume, evenly divided over the course of the test. Imaging media included 20-lb. bond, 10 percent of which was recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. The KM-8030 was also tested with a sampling of a range of media types, including labels, transparencies, tabs, envelopes and card stock.

LAB TEST

Test Environment
Testing was conducted under ambient conditions of 72 F (+/-5 F) and 45% RH (+/-10%), with daily conditions monitored by a Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Humidity Chart Recorder, in Buyers Labs test facility at 20 Railroad Avenue, Hackensack, NJ.

Performance Summary

As tested with firmware version 0334.00, the Kyocera KM-8030 unquestionably proved to be a highly reliable product throughout BLIs 2,000,000-impression extended-term reliability test. In contrast to BLIs standard reliability test, which is conducted for a volume equivalent to one month of a units monthly duty cycle, in this extended-term test, BLI subjected the KM-8030 to a reliability test that was four times as long. Throughout testing, the KM-8030 displayed virtually flawless performance, producing 2,000,000 impressions with no service required other than scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) at 500,000-impression intervals. Moreover, only 12 misfeeds occurred during the entire test, for an impressive misfeed rate of just one per 166,667 impressions, which is better than that of most Segment 5 units tested to date by BLI. In addition, image quality remained consistently good throughout the course of the test and no problems were experienced when running various paper stocks, such as tabs, envelopes and transparencies. BLI believes that the test results of its 2,000-000-impression reliability test clearly demonstrate that the Kyocera KM-8030 can be counted on for highly reliable performance in environments requiring an MFP for the production of up to 500,000 impressions per month.

Test Equipment

BLIs dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2000 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows 2000 and XP workstations, 10BaseT/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Tested Configuration

KM-8030 base model, plus optional 3,000-sheet finisher (DF-650) and 4,000-sheet LCT (PF-650).
