| Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 (original model) Unlike others here, I have generally had a good experience with my Sprintscan 4000. hardware good; software -- needs improvement I bought this about 2 years ago for quite a princely sum and have had a pretty good time using it. | |

| Complete piece of junk. This is a poorly made scanner. It produces poor images, the software is very cumbersome, it is extremely slow. hardware good; software -- needs improvement I bought this about 2 years ago for quite a princely sum and have had a pretty good time using it. | |

Scanning with the Polaroid SprintScan 4000
Part A: Part B: Part C: Part D: Opening up the scanning program The scan window Inserting slides and film into the scanner The scan settings
Part A: Opening up the scanning program
Open Adobe Photoshop located on desktop under Start menu.
Note: Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and 7.0 are present on the computer connected to the Polaroid slide scanner. Either version of Adobe Photoshop may be used. Adobe 7.0 will be shown in this manual.
Open the Polaroid scan program by selecting File > Import > Launch Polacolor Insight:
Polaroid scan program open:
Part B: The scan window
1. Preview Window
Scan Tabs (located above the Preview Window)
Tab Options
Part C: Inserting slides and film into the scanner
All scan material must be placed in a scan holder prior to insertion into the scanner. If film is to be scanned, line film frames up with frames of the film holder. Emulsion side of the film should face downward. If slides are to be scanned, insert slides in the slide holder with the long edges of the slides lining up with the long edge of the slide holder. Emulsion side of the slides should face downward. Gently slide the holder into the scanner in the direction indicated on the holder. Once the holder is inserted far enough, the scanner will feed it in a short distance and align it.
Part D: The scan settings
1. The Preview Tab will be in full view automatically when the scan program is opened. Enter the appropriate media type and input settings in the Preview Tab Options located to the right of the Preview Window. The appropriate information must be entered prior to preview.
Once slides or film are inserted into the scanner and the scanner program is open, a preview may be made. To obtain a preview of the first slide or negative in the holder, simply hit the Preview button located in the Preview Tab Options:
If the desired slide is in a different location in the holder, you may attain a preview in a few different ways: Type the frame number in the box labeled Frame Number, then hit the Preview Button. Or select the Thumbnails button located beside the Preview button.
Hit Select All, then View Selected to see a thumbnail of all images in the strip holder:
Double click on the thumbnail you wish to scan.
A preview will appear in the Preview Window:
If the preview of the slide is in the wrong orientation, it may be flipped or rotated using the options under Orientation:
Select the desired area of scan by adjusting the white box in the Preview Window:
Click on the Tone Tab located next to the Preview Tab. Note that only the area of the preview selected by the white box will show up in the Preview Window.
Ensure that Split View, is deselected. This will enable viewing of alterations done to the scan:
Auto Exposure or Dodge and Burn may also be selected to give the desired alteration. Note: Any auto-function of the program may be reversed by selecting Edit > Undo.
Adjust the lightness and contrast of the scan by moving the bar sliders located to the right of the preview window.
10. Next, select the Color Tab to adjust the tone of the scan:
11. To automatically adjust the tint of the scan, select Gray Cast Removal, Bright Cast Removal or Pastel Cast Removal. 12. Tint may also be adjusted using the Eyedropper Tool. Use it to select a specific color on the Preview Window. The program will remove tint of the color selected. 13. If the image is bland or washed out, Saturation may be adjusted. Increase the saturation value to give the image more vivid colors. 14. To adjust the lightness and darkness of the scan, go to the Curves Tab:
15. The lightness of the scan may be automatically adjusted by selecting Auto Highlights and Auto Shadow. 16. The Eyedropper Tools located to the left of the auto-function buttons can also be used to adjust the lightness of the scan:
Select an area for highlights.
Select an area for shadows.
17. Lightness may also be adjusted by altering the line graph located to the right of the Preview Window. Select the channel to adjust in the dropdown menu at the top of the graph. Select Master to adjust all channels. Click a point on the line and drag with mouse.
18. Select the Sharpness Tab to adjust the sharpness of the scan:
If the contrast difference between pixels is great, the program will assume that this is an edge area and adjust contrast accordingly.
Sharpening functions work by evaluating contrast values between adjacent pixels.
Amount The strength of sharpening. Radius Controls the sharpening halo width. A smaller value for radius will decrease the amount of sharpening. Threshold Decreases the amount of sharpening. Used if areas with little tonal difference are being sharpened too much.
19. Dust and scratches present on slides may be reduced by selecting normal or maximum under Dust Reduction:
Note: Enabling dust reduction will blur the scan. Comparing the modes of dust reduction:
No dust reduction
Dust reduction on normal
Dust reduction on maximum
20. When the image is ready to be scanned, select the Scan Tab:
21. Enter desired dpi (dots per inch) in the Resolution Box, enter the desired scale in the Scale To Box. If the image is scaled to a specific value, for example 200%, dimensions of the image will automatically change according to the area selected for the scan under the Preview Tab.
Note: The Polaroid SprintScan 4000 can scan a MAXIMUM resolution of 4000 dpi at a scale of 100%. If the image is scaled to 200%, then the maximum resolution the scanner can scan is 2000 dpi, if scaled to 400%, the maximum resolution will be 1000 dpi etc. If higher resolution than the maximum scanner resolution is entered, the scanner will automatically change either the resolution or scale value to the scanner maximum.
Select desired Resample Method from the drop-down menu. Resampling an image will produce a higher quality scan at lower resolutions by interpolating pixels within the image. Four resample methods are available (images shown at 50 dpi):
Nearest Neighbor The value of the new pixel is obtained by duplicating the value of the closest pixel. This method is the fastest method of resampling, however it is also the least precise.
Bilinear Uses the average values of the closest four pixels (above, below, left and right) to create a new pixel. This method will reduce contrast of the image and make it look smoother.
Bicubic Works the same way as bilinear but uses the closest 16 pixels. Again, this will make the image softer and smoother. The image may need to be sharpened after the scan. This is the most time consuming method of resampling but also the most precise and is therefore often the default image enlargement method.
Mixed Mode Uses all of the above methods.
Experimentation with each resample method may be needed as each method will depend on the image itself as well as the future use of the image. For example, if the image is to be printed or to remain in digital form.
23. Once the appropriate selections have been made, scan the image by selecting the Scan Button: 24. A Save Window will appear. Name the file, select TIFF under Save as Type, select a destination for the file and click Save:
25. The scanner will begin scanning:
26. Film may be ejected by selecting Scanner > Eject Film:
27. Once scanning is completed, the image will be imported into Adobe Photoshop.

Description The version 1.40 Firmware downloader includes a fix allowing the yellow status lamp at the top of the SprintScan 4000 to work as described in the documentation. The APS film adapter instructions and the SprintScan 4000 Installation Guide both show that the yellow lamp should go out when the APS adapter or a filmholder is inserted into the scanner. When the lamp goes out, this is an indication to the user that they should let go of the APS adapter or filmholder. If you are using an earlier version of the Firmware, the lamp will not go out when the adapter or holder are inserted. In addition to the Firmware fix, all previous Firmware upgrades have been incorporated in this release. Note to APS adapter users: After upgrading the firmware, insert the APS adapter into the scanner. When the yellow lamp on the top of the scanner goes out, let go of the adapter and let the scanner pull it inside. Close and lock the scanner front door in the up position. Begin scanning after the yellow lamp is on steady. Who should use this upgrade If your scanner has version 1.30 Firmware installed and you do not use the APS adapter you do not have to install this update. If your scanner has Firmware 1.29 or earlier, you should install version 1.40.
