FAQ: What printers are easy to configure with the AWA IV-x with the XP embedded operating system?
Answer: There are several printer options that we can recommend. As a general rule, stay away from multi-function devices (Printer/scanner/copier/fax all in one) These devices require several hundred mega-bytes worth of special drivers, and are too fragile for workshop use. Go with a basic printer. Here are basic printers that have been tested and are known to work as of October 19, 2010. These printers will work with very little configuration. If you do not have access to an easy to implement solution such as the ones we recommend above, below are some tips and suggestions on how to proceed: Configuring the DeskJet 5650 and other HP printers with the AWA IV-2, IV-4, IV-6, IV-12 and IV-12HO With the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded operating system: DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE ON Windows 2000 professional or Windows XP professional it is not intended for them! Read the whole procedure first.
If you are simply just trying to add another or second printer, please review the following before proceeding. Look at the Tips and tricks section.
How to tell if you have Windows XP Embedded/Embedded Software operating system in your AWA: When you plug in the tester, and switch the power on you will see a splash screen that clearly indicates the operating system in the machine:
These instructions are for installing the HP Desk-jet 990C general usage USB printer drivers, which work with most HP desk-jet printers this example uses the HP Desk-jet 5650 which is recommended by Baker Instrument Company, an SKF Group Company. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Unpack the Desk-jet 5650, according to the manufacturer instructions. Procure a USB interconnect cable, HP does not provide one with the printer. Load the printer ink cartridges according to manufacturer instructions. DO NOT attempt to start loading the driver CD-ROM. This is not required. You will have to enter the AWA into what is called Admin Mode

6) Left ALT and F12 keys pressed simultaneously will allow access to the Admin Mode A reboot will be required. 7) Verify the existence of the following two files in this directory: C:\Windows\system32\spool\w32x86\3 8) HPFDJ200.HLP and UNIDRV.HLP 9) These two files should have been pre-loaded by AWA factory technicians. They are part of the base drive package used to control USB printers manufactured by Hewlett Packard. If these.HLP files are not present, or if you are attempting to install some other type and brand of printer, you will likely be prompted for other.HLP files. If prompted, a handy way to locate the desired.HLP files is to locate a Windows XP workstation the same exact printer is already installed on. A drive search for *.HLP will reveal them in short order. Copy them to a memory key and off you go. 10) Start Control Panel Printers and Faxes:

Now, we have to tell the AWA that its going to be using a USB port to control the printer. Note that you have to select USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)

Then, youll need to browse to HP and select the HP990C.

Select Next Youll get an opportunity to name this generic HP printer whatever name seems appropriate to you: For example you could name it HP DeskJet 990C, or DeskJet 5650

You will likely be prompted for a test page. Its a good idea to select this option as a helpful test step.

Once done, select the Shortcut to Baker Admin Then, select User Shell the tester will prompt for a re-boot. Let it re-boot, and load up your data-base.

Then, its time to print: Select the print icon, then, select the report type to print. Then select the printer. If you named the Printer DESKJET 5650 earlier, you will see it in the pick list.

Tips and tricks, in case a new printer is not recognized or shows as Offline:
Here are the steps for adding another new printer to a unit with XP Embedded. 1. Plug printer into USB port. 2.Click the Start button and click Control Panel. 3. Double click Printers and Faxes. 4. Right click HP DeskJet 990C and select Properties. 5. Select the Ports tab. 6. Check the box for the USB Virtual Printer Port with the highest number. (example.USB002) 7. Click Apply and close Properties window. 8. Unplug printer from USB port then plug it back in.

Final considerations: The AWA with Windows XP Embedded is tested with the 5650 printer before it leaves the AWA factory. While the world is full of many hundreds of different types and models of printers, not all of them are an ideal fit for an AWA with Windows XP Embedded. For example, certain types of printers are designed to print photographs from a docking station, and have proprietary software to handle this task. This software, if loaded on the AWA, can interfere with test sequences, and even cause the tester to crash during a test sequence, possibly leading to erroneous testing. These Hewlett Packard USB printer drivers that are provided with the AWA are drivers that have passed the Microsoft Windows hardware compatibility test sequences, and are unlikely to lead to error conditions with the AWA, and its basic functionality. Since so many printing possibilities exist, one way to make steps to provide a sure solution is to characterize and deliver the AWA with one, specific printer, tested and controlled by Baker Instrument Company, an SKF Group Company.
