Very robust, decent quality Old, and slow The Umax Astra 610p is now a very old scanner, but what has up until very recently been a very reliable and pretty decent quality scanner.

March 99

New RC Home Improvement, dBUG Style Goodies
At dBUGs March main meeting, a panel of dBUG experts will demonstrate how to set up a simple LocalTalk or Ethernet network. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. on March 10, in the Lopez Room of the Seattle Center San Juan Rooms. Luckily, the meeting date falls between three days of NCAA playoffs; March 10 is open practice night, so there should be parking. dBUGs main meetings are open to the public, so bring a friend along to see some of the expertise dBUG offers. Why have a network in your home or office? Lots of reasons:
Main Meeting, March 10, 1999 - Open to the Public
To use email for phone messages.
To share an Internet connection among multiple computers (Mac or PC) at low cost. To share files and printers (Mac or PC). To play network games, such as Golf, Diablo, or Doom.
Consultants John Newhoff, of Portage Bay Solutions, A.L. Al Thomas, and Cherie Nickell will network three computers and a printer. Youll learn what hardware and software you need, how to configure your software, and how to correct problems if they occur. Join us March 10, and dont forget to bring your questions!

The Latest Virus Alerts

Would you call it a vengeance of viruses? An infection of viruses? Whatever the term, a new horde of nasties is on the loose. Its a reminder of the importance of having anti-virus protection and keeping it current. New virus definitions for Norton AntiVirus and Virex were released on February 1, 1999. found a new virus, which they call the mysound virus. Although the virus appears to be linked with some versions of UMAXs VistaScan software, MacMedics also found the virus on Macs that did not have VistaScan software installed. The Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) confirmed that mysound appears to be a virus. SARC is currently investigating it. The virus leaves a file called mysound1 at the root level of your System Folder. Dont confuse the file with a legitimate MySound1 file created by the UMAX VistaScan software installer. The legitimate file has the same creation and modification date: March 28, 1995. Its type is sfil and its creator is MYSN. The suspect files found by MacMedics have a different modification date. If you find a mysound1 file that doesnt match the legitimate file description, MacMedics recommends deleting it, and also suggests a clean install of your system software. The suspect mysound1 file appeared in the otherwise brandnew System Folder when MacMedics installed UMAX VistaScan 1.13, which came bundled with a UMAX Astra 610S scanner. However, the file was not found on a UMAX Astra Scanner CD version 2.1, that came with an Astra 2400S scanner. MacMedics thinks that an undescribed virus is changing UMAXs legitimate mysound1 file. Per MacMedics:
dBUGs Resource Center continues to expand; a 100 MHz Pentium PC and a 1 GB Mac Jaz drive were recently added to dBUGs training equipment. The PC is a long-term loan from Jay Heath. Dana Klein donated a CD-ROM drive and some additional RAM, bringing the total to 32 MB. The PC is running Windows 95. Thanks to Dana, and especially to Jay, for their generosity. dBUG purchased the Jaz drive, which is attached to dBUGs 7500/G3 computer. If you have a Jaz drive, you can now use your Jaz disks to bring more or larger files for burning onto a CD-ROM or for use in a SIG meeting or Open House. You can also take home up to a gigabyte of scans from the Resource Centers new scanner.

Not all Mysound files share the same code The virus seems to remove random lines of code from multiple items in the System Folder, including the System file, extensions, and Control Panels. It then appears to add the removed code into itself until it reaches 522K. It then renames itself MysoundX where X is the next higher sequential number. It cant replicate itself or move to another machine. We have found the majority of these files on machines that do not have UMAX scanners. The virus is slow in its destruction. It only activates

Word Virus Adds Insult to Injury
The Word macro virus, W97M.Class (a.k.a. Class.Poppy) has migrated from Winword 97 to Word 98. W97M.Class has been found on local Macs in the last month. Both Norton AntiVirus and Virex can destroy this virus. Most W97M.Class variants simply display insulting messages on particular dates. Although the norm is to deride the user, Variant E makes fun of President Clinton. On computers running Windows 95, the D variant modifies the Win95 registry to replace the name of the registered owner with that of the virus writer.

Agax Takes On CODE9811 Virus
The freeware anti-virus program, AntiGax (see MacNews, 11/98), has been rewritten and renamed Agax 1.0. Agax (also freeware) combats specific viruses with modules called Additives. Agax now has Additives for the Graphics Accelerator virus (a.k.a. SevenDust E) and a more recent virus called CODE9811. Agax creator John Dalgliesh cautions that Agax works only against known viruses for which an Additive has been written. For details, see <http:// www.cse.unsw.edu.au/ ~s2191331/agax/agax.html/>. The CODE9811 virus infects applications, tries to delete antivirus programs, and spreads from one application to another. Its payload is harmless: yellow dots munch black trails through the image on the screen. One by one, the munchers are trapped in three areas of the screen, their trails turning red. Finally, a message appears: You have been hacked by the Praetorian!

SHARE BROWSER BOOKMARKS

If you have more than one browser you use on a regular basis, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, and you dont want to maintain two sets of bookmarks, you might find this useful. It is possible to make an alias of one bookmarks file (I used the IE Favorites.html) and place it in the proper place for the other browser to use. Just rename the alias (in this case to Bookmarks.html) and the same list of bookmarks is available to both browsers. You can even add bookmarks to the alias list just as if it was the original file created by the browser. This also works for plug-ins.

Drag and drop a word or a phrase onto a Netscape page, and you will be taken to search engine results for that word or phrase. Netscape seems to take turns between the Lycos and InfoSeek search engines. Of course, if the word is a Web site, you will be taken there, instead. Try dropping all kinds of documents onto Netscape. The results are sometimes surprising.

Netscape: Open the Netscape folder (found in the System folders Preferences folder), locate the file named MagicCookie, and drag it to the trash. Now create a new folder within the Netscape folder and name it MagicCookie. Netscape will now be unable to create a new MagicCookie file because it believes one already exists. AOL 3.0: Open the Browser Cache folder found in the Preferences folders America Online folder. Replace the cookies.txt file with a folder of the same name. As you may know, just because youve tossed a file into the trash and then emptied the trash, that file has hardly been vaporized. dBUG History

When I moved to Seattle from northwest Florida in 1991, I kept hearing about this dBUG group. I came, I saw, I joined! For the first few years, I mostly lurked on the ExChange and soaked up the expertise that people like Cherie Nickell, Evan Kentop, and Cary Lu made available. Occasionally, I came to a SIG or main meeting to meet the people I had been reading on the ExChange and in the Mac magazines. Then, as I gained a bit more confidence in my understanding of the Mac hardware and software, I began to comment and answer questions online when I felt I could seriously contribute. Finally, I got over my shyness, and now Im the guy you all know and love, who puts in his two cents whether its wanted or not! Ive met friends and adversaries on the ExChange, made business contacts, and tried to be a valuable member of the dBUG community. Whenever I go into a new area of Mac use (setting up my first Ethernet network, tweaking my TCP/IP settings, solving a software or hardware conflict for a client in an area where Im not expert), I always know I have the members of dBUG and the ExChange to back me up.

Mac History

I started in 1990 with a Macintosh IIsi; it had 9 MB of RAM and a huge 80 MB hard drive. I was working part time for an Apple retailer and saw it as a good time to sell my Apple IIGS and move up to the big leagues. I felt (accurately, as it turned out) that Apple II Forever was just a slogan and that Macintosh was the real future for Apple.
Dragon Fire: Still Want to Be a Hero?
Dragon Fire, the fifth in Sierras Quest for Glory (QFG) series of sword-and-sorcery adventure games, successfully combines problem solving and hand-to-hand combat. The games main thread is a series of quests, called the Rites of Rulership, to find the best candidate for the kingship of Silmaria. Beware: An assassin is picking off the Rulership questers, while the ancient magic bonds imprisoning a powerful dragon are slowly being broken. Whats worse, your advisors are falling into a strange coma, from which no known medicine or magic can rouse them. In other words, just another heros working day. Dragon Fire lets you be a fighter, a wizard, or a thief. Each character has different strengths, and certain parts of the game are not available to all three characters. All heroes require food and rest at normal intervals; like your mother, the game calmly interrupts a struggle to the death to suggest that a good nights sleep or a meal would be a nice idea. In Dragon Fire, you explore the world around you, talking to (or killing) people and collecting tools and goodies as you go. If a bad guy pops up, you can flail away with your mouse or use keystrokes to attack and parry more precisely. The number keys 1-9 give you quick access to any nine inventory items you choose; you can reassign items on the fly. Dragon Fire isnt just battles and brainteasers. Get ready for characters who bludgeon you with puns, cameos from Casablanca and The Bride of Frankenstein, and pizza as the pinnacle of science and art. The animations seem crude, but the landscapes are lush. Take a swim off the Silmaria dock for glimpses of submarine wonders. Theres not much gore in Dragon Fire, except in the sound effects. A couple of gripes: First, characters youve already met sometimes default to the verbose Welcome, stranger mode instead of recognizing you. Second, the game doesnt play fair at times. Dragon Fire features an arena, in which you battle for prize money. However, a character that is scheduled to be fighting in the arena still blocks your path in another location at the same time. Dragon Fire requires a Power Mac (180 MHz preferred), 350 MB free hard disk space, 32 MB of RAM, CD-ROM (8x preferred), and 16-bit video (thousands of colors). Even on a 266 MHz G3, with a 24x CD-ROM, however, some parts of the game are painfully jerky.
