| Before that I used a P4 2.8GHz,512BM,80GB, 20"LCD Desktop. Now I bought a P-M 1.6G, 512MB, 80GB Dell Inspiron 6000. This is an awesome laptop. I purchased it in September 2005, and I upgraded it to be a fairly high-end laptop. | |

Drivers
What Is a Driver?
A driver is a program that controls a device such as a printer, mouse, or keyboard. All devices require a driver program. A driver acts like a translator between the device and any other programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver recognizes.
Dell ships your computer to you with required drivers already installedno further installation or configuration is needed. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with your Microsoft Windows operating system. You may need to install drivers if you: Upgrade your operating system. Reinstall your operating system. Connect or install a new device.
Identifying Drivers
If you experience a problem with any device, identify whether the driver is the source of your problem and, if necessary, update the driver. 1 Click the Start button and click Control Panel. 2 Under Pick a Category, click Performance and Maintenance. 3 Click System. 4 In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab. 5 Click Device Manager. 6 Scroll down the list to see if any device has an exclamation point (a yellow circle with a [!]) on the device icon. If an exclamation point is next to the device name, you may need to reinstall the driver or install a new driver. See the following subsection, "Reinstalling Drivers."
You can increase your computer memory by installing memory modules on the system board. See "Specifications" on page 93 for information on the memory supported by your computer. Install only memory modules that are intended for your computer. NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. 1 Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin" on page 75. 2 Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer. NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer.
3 Turn the computer over, loosen the captive screws on the memory module cover, and then remove the memory module cover.
NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips. 4 If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing module:
Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up. Remove the module from the connector.

NOTICE: If you need to install memory modules in two connectors, install a memory module in the connector labeled DIMMA before you install a module in the connector labeled DIMMB. Insert memory modules at a 45-degree angle to avoid damaging the connector. NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure. 5 Ground yourself and install the new memory module:
Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot. Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the module down until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.
notch tab
6 Replace the memory module cover. NOTICE: If the cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer.
7 Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet. 8 Reinstall the hard drive. See "Hard Drive" on page 77. 9 Turn on the computer. As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information. To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click the Start button, click Help and Support, and then click Computer Information.
If you ordered the optional modem at the same time that you ordered your computer, the modem is already installed CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. 1 Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin" on page 75. 2 Turn the computer over, loosen the captive screws on the modem cover, and then remove the modem cover.
3 Remove the existing modem:
