David Stone he HP OfficeJet 7130 All-inOne ($500 street), roughly the size and shape of a desktop copier with a front panel that would look at home on a fax machine, offers far more than you might expect from a multifunction printer. Not only can it serve as your printer, scanner, copier, and fax, but plug your cameras memory card in, and you can print photos with or without your computer. The 7130 has a longer-than-usual list of functions, but more importantly, it doesnt skimp on anything. The flatbed scanner includes a 50-sheet automatic document feeder, the printers automatic duplexer lets you print on both sides of the paper, and the memory card slots accept CompactFlash, Memory Stick, MultiMedia, Secure Digital, and SmartMedia cards. The 7130 uses four print heads one for each colorthat hide under a cover in the cartridge carrier. Two ink cartridgesone black and one with three colorssnap into the top of the carrier. Despite the unusual design, setting up the hardware is straightforward enough that we managed it without instructions.
Youll need the Getting Started poster for software setup, which is still straightforward, but doesnt follow the standard Windows procedure. For almost every function, the 7130 offers numerous small and large conveniences. Plug in a camera memory card, for example, and the front-panel menu tells you how many photos are on it, asks whether to copy the photos to your computer, and guides you through the steps necessary to print out the digital equivalent of a contact sheet. On the sheet, ovals that you can fill in with a pen will tell the printer which photos to print and at what size. You just scan the sheet, and your photos print. As an added bonus, the 7130 does duplex copying. Oddly, the duplexing capability does not extend to faxing and scanningsomething HP says we may see in future printers of this type. The 7130 generally scored well on quality and acceptably on performance. It produced excellent output across the board for text, graphics, and photos whether printing or
copying, and quality varied from good to excellent. On our performance tests, the printer managed a respectable 3.4 pages per minute in default mode for 10- and 30-page Microsoft Word documents, and our suite of 8- by 10-inch photos took from 4 minutes 30 seconds to 4 minutes 50 seconds each in best mode on photo paper. All told, the 7130 is the ultimate all-in-one for the small office today.
