Finalizing & Playing on other DVD components
There are two different recording methods: Direct Recording and Timer Recording. Timer recording is classified as recording type : Once, Daily or Weekly or recording mode : XP (high quality mode), SP (standard quality mode), LP (long recording mode), and EP (extended mode) according to the recording mode.
Description
Front Panel
To play your DVD on other DVD components, finalizing may be necessary. First, finish all editing and recording operations, then finalize the disc.
When using a DVD-RW disc in VR Mode
Although finalizing is generally unnecessary when playing the disc on a VR Mode compatible component, a finalized disc should be used for playback on that type of component.
When using a DVD-RW disc in Video Mode
The disc should be finalized first to enable playback on anything compatible other than this recorder. No more editing or recording can be made on the disc once it has been finalized. To enable recording on the disc again, Disc should be unfinalized.
Step 4
Playing
You can select the title you want to play in a displayed menu and then immediately start playback. A DVD consists of sections, called titles, and sub sections, called chapters. During recording, a title is created between two points where you start and stop recording, DVD-R/DVD-RW discs(in Video mode) can automatically create chapters according to the recording mode when finalized.
When using a DVD-R disc
You should finalize the disc to play it a compatible component other than this recorder. You cannot edit or record on the disc once it has been finalized.

Step 1: Unpacking

Method1 : Antenna + DVD RecorderVCR + TV : No Cable box
You can record non-scrambled channels by selecting the channel on the DVD Recorder-VCR. Also use this Method if you watch channels without cable box.

Step 2: Connecting the Antenna Cable
There are several ways to connect your DVD Recorder-VCR. Select one of the following antenna connections that best suits you below. Method 1 : Antenna + DVD Recorder-VCR + TV : No Cable box Method 2 : Antenna +Cable box + DVD Recorder-VCR + TV : Cable box with many scrambled channels Method 3 : Antenna + DVD Recorder-VCR + Cable box + TV : Cable box with a few scrambled channels If you are using an off-air antenna that has 300ohm twin flat leads, use an external antenna connector (300-75 ohm adaptor : not supplied) to connect the antenna to the DVD Recorder-VCR.
Step 4 : Connecting the Audio Cable
There are several ways to connect your DVD Recorder-VCR. Select the audio connection that best suits you below. Method 1 : Connecting to your TV Method 2 : Connecting to a stereo amplifier (analog audio out / digital audio out) Method 3 : Connecting to an AV amplifier with a digital input jack. Manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories. Dolby and the double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories.
Method 2 : Connecting to a stereo amplifier with analog input jacks
If your stereo amplifier only has audio input jacks (L and R), use the analog audio out jacks.
Method 3 : Connecting to an AV amplifier with the digital input jack
If your AV amplifier only has a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder and a digital input jack, use this connection. To enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS sound, you must set up the audio settings. (See page 30)
DTS and DTS Digital Out are trademarks of Digital Theater Systems, Inc.
Method 1 : Connecting to your TV
This connection will use your TVs speakers.
Make sure that the color coded connections match. That is, the Y, Pb and Pr component output jacks of your DVD Recorder-VCR should be connected to the exact corresponding component input jacks on your TV Otherwise, red or blue images will be. displayed on the TV screen. Once 480p video output mode is selected, Video, S-Video and 480i outputs are disabled. Make sure that the left and right audio output jacks of your DVD Recorder-VCR are connected to the left and right audio input jacks of your TV , respectively.(page 21)

Step 5 : Connecting External Devices
This allows you to connect your DVD Recorder-VCR to other external devices and view or record their outputs. Method 1 : Connecting a VCR, Set-Top Box(STB) or DVD player to the AUDIO/VIDEO LINE IN 1 jacks. Method 2 : Connecting a Camcorder to the LINE IN 2 in jacks. Method 3 : Connecting a Camcorder to the DV IN jack.
Method 2 : Connecting a Camcorder to the LINE IN 2 jacks
You can use the LINE IN 2 jacks on the front panel of the DVD Recorder-VCR. You can record from connected equipment. When an input source is inserted into LINE IN 2 while viewing TV the input will be switched to LINE IN 2 automatically. ,
Step 6 : Connecting the Power Cord
After all connections are complete, plug the power cord in the wall outlet. AUTO in the front panel display flickers. This means that the current time is being set automatically (Auto Program) through the antenna under connection. The setup may take several minutes. When it normally operates, the current time is automatically set and displayed in the front panel display.
Step 7 : Preparing the Remote Control
Install Batteries in the Remote Control
Open the battery cover on the back of the remote. Insert two AA batteries. Make sure that the polarities (+ and -) are aligned correctly. Replace the battery cover.
If the remote does not operate properly:
Check the polarity + - of the batteries (Dry-Cell) Check if the batteries are drained. Check if the remote sensor is blocked by obstacles. Check if there is any fluorescent lighting nearby.
Method 1 : Connecting a VCR, Settop Box(STB) or DVD player to the AUDIO/VIDEO LINE IN 1 jacks
Connecting a VCR or external device to AUDIO/VIDEO LINE IN 1 jacks of the DVD Recorder-VCR. You can record a copy free contest from connected equipment (VCR, STB or DVD).
If - - - - appears, however, it means that auto time setting has failed. In that case, set the current time through the manual clock set, as shown in pages 27~28.
Dispose of used batteries according to local environmental regulations. Do not put them in the household trash.
Method 3 : Connecting a Camcorder to the DV IN jack
If your camcorder has a DV output jack, connect it to the DV input jack of your DVD Recorder-VCR. If your camcorder has a DV output jack, see page 69 for more information.
Whenever pulling the power cord out of the wall outlet and plugging it again, auto time setting will be working.
Do not expose the remote sensor of the recorder to a strong light source such as direct sunlight or other illumination. If you do so, you may not be able to operate the recorder via the remote control.
You can also use the LINE IN 2 jacks on the front panel of the DVD Recorder-VCR. When the S-Video jack and Video jack are both connected, the S-Video jack will have priority. Line Selection will be automatically done. Copy protected content cannot be recorded. Some models of DV format digital video cameras may support a different compression format. From such equipment, recording is not possible. Depending on the models of DV format digital video cameras, recording may not work properly or some functions may be disabled.

Setting the Remote Control
Your DVD Recorder-VCR remote control will work with Toshiba televisions and compatible brands.
To determine whether your television is compatible, follow the instructions below.
1. Switch your television on. 2. Point the remote control towards the television. 3. Hold down the TV button and enter the two-figure code corresponding to the brand of your television, by pressing the appropriate numeric buttons.

MENU Button
Press this button on the remote control while the DVD or VCR is in Stop or Play mode to open the on-screen MAIN MENU.
You can then control the television using the following buttons.
Button POWER INPUT SEL. VOL + or CH ( or ) TV MUTE Function Used to switch the television on and off. Used to select an external source. Used to adjust the volume of the television. Used to select the required channel. Used to toggle the sound on and off.
Up/Down and Left/Right
Use these buttons to move the selection bar up/down and left/right to cycle through the menu options.
Enter Button
Press this button on the remote control to confirm any new settings.
Return Button
Press this button on the remote control to return to the last MENU screen displayed or to exit the onscreen MENU all together.
The various functions will not necessarily work on all televisions. If you encounter problems, operate the television by using the TVs remote control.

Auto Clock Set
This menu is used to set the current time. You need to set the time to use timer recording.
Select Auto Clock Set using the buttons, then press the or ENTER button.
No Disc
Select Password ON/OFF using and buttons.
About the Change Password;
On Off
Select Change Password using buttons, then press the or ENTER button. The Enter the password. message will be displayed.
Enter the 4-digit password using the 0 to 9 buttons on the remote. The Confirm the password. message will be displayed.
Enter your password again using the 0 to 9 buttons on the remote.
Run Auto channel memory
Move the selection arrow to Auto Channel Memory, then press ENTER to select. The DVD Recorder-VCR will automatically search for all available channels in the selected Tuner Band. This procedure may take a few minutes to complete. When finished, the lowest channel found will be displayed.
Select Parental control using buttons, then press the or ENTER button.
Select Rating Level you want using buttons, then press the or ENTER button. For example, if you select up to Level 6, discs that contain Level 7, 8 will not play. Larger number indicates the program is more intended to adult use only
Auto Channel Memory
Auto Channel Memory will automatically seek and store all active channels in your area.
Enter the 4-digit password using the 0 to 9 buttons on the remote. The Confirm the password. message will be displayed. Enter your password again.
Press ENTER button to STOP or cancel scanning.
Press the RETURN or button to return to the previous menu. Press the MENU button to exit the menu. Refer to Troubleshooting if you forget your password.
With the DVD in stop mode, press the MENU button.

Use this feature if Auto Channel Search missed a channel that you would like to add and delete a channel you wish to remove.

Move the selection bar to Channel Add/Delete, then press ENTER to select.

Use the CH / buttons to tune in the channel number you wish to add or delete. Use the number buttons to move the channel directly. If you use the navigation button, the channel will be moved to the next memorized channel.

Skipping Chapters or Tracks
Step Motion Play (DVD-VIDEO/DVD-RAM/ DVD-RW/ DVD-R)
During pause mode, press the F.ADV button on the remote. Each time the button is pressed, a new frame will appear. To return to normal speed playback, press the II button.
During play, press the l or l button on the remote control. If you press the l button If you press the l button, it moves to the beginning of the chapter or track. Pressing the button once again within 3 seconds returns to the beginning of the previous chapter or track.

No sound is heard during STEP or SLOW mode.
DVD-RAM/DVD-RW
Title/Time/Subtitle/Audio/Repeat/Zoom
Whats a track? A track is usually a song on a Audio CD (CDDA) or MP3 disc. Whats a chapter? A title on a DVD disc is usually divided into chapters. Whats a title? A title means usually a film contained on a DVD disc. This may not work for some discs. When an audio CD(CD-DA) or a MP3 disc is inserted, depending on the type, the information display may not be appear. Regarding the DVD-Video mode, the Time Search function does not operate in some discs. To make the screen disappear, press the QUICK again.
Skipping ahead 30 seconds
In play mode, press F.ADV/SKIP button to cue ahead exactly 30 seconds.

The first 10 seconds of each track is played. If you press the II button during Intro play, Normal Play will be performed from the track currently playing. When Intro Play is completed, Normal Play is performed. The Playlist playback option allows you to select the order in which you want tracks to play.

Press the ENTER button. The Playlist screen will appear. Select tracks in the order in which you want them to play using the buttons. Press the ENTER button.
Press the QUICK button during playback. Repeat mode will be highlighted.

You can register a maximum 30 tracks in the playlist.

If you playlisted a wrong track, select the buttons and press the wrong track using the CLEAR button. The wrong track will be removed.

To change repeat mode
Press QUICK during Play to highlight Repeat Mode. Press ENTER when Repeat Mode is highlighted. A screen allowing you to change the repeat mode (Off, Disc, Track) will appear.

Select a desired play option using the buttons and press the ENTER button. Normal : Tracks on a disc are played in the order in which they were recorded on the disc. The Random option plays a discs tracks in random order. After a random list is generated and played completely, another random list is generated and played. Ramdom Play continues until the play option is changed.

: Selects a track (song).
ENTER ( ) button: Playbacks the selected track (song) or displays the files in the selected folder.

Using PIP
The PIP function allows you to view a sub screen together with the main screen in DVD mode. You can watch both DVD and TV together.
Deactivating PIP
Press the PIP button again. PIP will be deactivated.
Playing the VCR
To play a standard VHS videotape, just insert it into the VCR deck and press the PLAY button. You can turn on the Auto Play to enable the VCR deck to play automatically when you insert a videotape that is missing the Record Safety Tab. See pages 36~37.
Tracking
The Tracking adjustment removes almost the white lines that sometimes appear during playback because of slight differences in recording decks. The TRK button will automatically align the recorded tracks with the playback heads to solve this problem. You may also set tracking manually.
PIP does not work in VCR mode.
Press the PIP button. The current disc is played back on the PIP screen located at the bottom of the screen.
Adjust Tracking Manually
During playback, press the CH/TRK / buttons to remove white lines from the picture.
Insert VHS Tape
Insert a standard VHS videotape into the VCR deck. When a videotape is inserted, power will turn on automatically.
Switching between the PIP and main screens
Play Tape
Press the II(PLAY/PAUSE) button on the remote control or on the front panel of the unit. The videotape will begin to play automatically if it is missing the Record Safety Tab and Auto Play is turned on. See pages 36~37.
Press the PIP button again. The main and PIP screen will be switched.
Stop Playback
Press the (STOP) button on the remote control or on the front panel of the unit.

Special VCR Playback Features
While a videotape is playing, you can enjoy a variety of special playback features, including Still, Frame Advance, Skip, Slow motion, and more. Press the Play button again to resume normal playback.
S-VHS Playback
The DVD Recorder-VCR allows you to playback high quality S-VHS tapes.
Variable Search System
Press the QUICK button to display the search screen in the stop mode. When a program is recorded, the starting point is given an Index mark for easy location. However, the VHS Index Search System (VISS) cannot recognize index marks made by old VCRs. If the VCR has trouble finding a mark, it is probably because the cassette was recorded on a VCR without VISS. If you want to index two programs in a row, set your VCR to stop, then start recording each program.

Title List : Title refers to a recorded video stream. Title List shows a list to help you select a title. Since the title list consists of the information on data that is actually recorded, if one title is deleted, that title cannot be played again.

Playing a Title List Entry

Play List : The Playlist is a unit of playback, that is created by selecting a desired scene in the Title List. Since only the information necessary for playing a desired scene is included in a playlist, even if that playlist is deleted, the original data will not be deleted.

Comcast Custom DVR 3-Device Universal Remote Control
Use the remote controls mode keys (i.e., AUX, TV, or Cable) to control a specific device. When pressed, the selected mode key will light, confirming your choice. Use the other keys to perform desired actions (see the following key chart).
NOTE: The selected mode will remain active until you press another mode key.
Use Page+ (or Page) to page up (or down) through menu screens and the interactive program guide. Use Guide to display the interactive program guide. Use these keys to move the cursor in the interactive program guide and menu screens. Use OK (Select)to select menu options, PPV events, and programs from the interactive program guide. Use Info to display current channel and program information. Use Menu to display the Quick Menu (on a Motorola, GI, or Jerrold Cable Box), or to access settings (on a Scientific Atlanta Explorer, Pioneer Voyager, or PACE cable box). Use Exit to exit the menu or guide. Use Help to access digital cable help. Use Last to recall the last channel or go back one screen in the menu. Now, when you press VOL+, VOL-, or Mute, the volume of the selected device (e.g., TV) will be controlled regardless of the mode you have selected.
SEARCHING FOR YOUR CODE
If your home entertainment device does not respond to the remote control after trying all of the codes listed for your brand, or if your brand is not listed at all, try searching for your code. For example, after trying all of the codes for your TV, you still cannot get the remote control to operate your TV, then: 1. 2. Turn on your TV. On the remote control, press TV once. Then press and hold Setup until the TV key blinks twice, then release Setup. Enter 9 - 9 - 1. The TV key will blink twice. Aim the remote control at the the TV and slowly alternate between pressing Power and TV. Stop when the TV turns off. A working code has been found.
NOTE: In the search mode, the remote control will send IR codes from its library to the selected device, starting with the most popular code first.
PROGRAMMING DEVICE CONTROL
The Comcast Custom 3-Device universal remote control is preprogrammed at the factory to operate the Cable Box supplied by your Comcast system, an RCA TV, and an RCA VCR (in the AUX mode). To control devices other than default brands (excluding the Cable Box), perform the below steps; otherwise skip this section: 1. Turn on a device (e.g., VCR or DVD Player) and, if applicable, insert media, (e.g., video cassette or disc).
NOTE: Please read steps 2 to 6 completely before proceeding. Highlight or write down the codes and device you wish to program before moving on to step 2.
TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: A mode key does not blink when you press a key. SOLUTION: Replace the batteries with two (2) new AA batteries. PROBLEM: During programming, a mode key displays one long blink. SOLUTION: An invalid entry has occurred. Check the key to be entered and try programming again. PROBLEM: A mode key blinks when you press a key, but home entertainment component does not respond. SOLUTION: Make sure the remote control is aimed at your home entertainment device and is not farther than 15 feet away. PROBLEM: The remote control does not control home entertainment devices or the commands are not working properly. SOLUTION: Try all listed codes for the device brands being set up. Make sure they can be operated with an infrared remote control. PROBLEM: CH+, CH-, and Last do not work for your RCA TV. SOLUTION: Due to RCA design (19831987), only the original remote control will operate these functions. PROBLEM: Changing channels does not work properly. SOLUTION: If original remote control required pressing Enter to change channels, also press Enter on this remote control after entering the channel number.
User Guide OVERVIEW
The Comcast Custom DVR 3-Device universal remote will control up to three home entertainment devices, including a Digital Video Recorder enabled Cable Box (used by Comcast Systems). The remote control requires installing two (2) new AA batteries (included) and some easy programming to control your devices. For best results, please read and perform all instructions listed here. Also, keep this guide for future reference.
In the AUX or TV mode, use the transport keys to control a VCR, PVR, or DVD player. To record a program on a VCR, press REC twice. In the Cable mode, use the keys to control ON DEMAND programs. Press REPLAY to replay the previous few seconds of a program. Press My DVR to show a list of programs that have been recorded. Press LIVE to return to watching live TV. Use A, B, or C to access interactive program guide functions on your Scientific Atlanta Explorer, Pioneer Voyager, or PACE cable box. Use Day+ (or Day) to viewwhat programs are available in the future while using the guide on your Motorola digital receiver. Use Lock to restrict viewing of selected programs (Parental Control) on your Motorola (GI or Jerrold) cable box.
REASSIGNING DEVICE KEYS CHANGING VOLUME LOCK
The Comcast Custom 3-Device universal remote control is set at the factory to control the TV volume in all modes. However, you may change the Volume Lock setting to Individual Volume Unlock to unlock a specific devices volume controls for independent operation in its own mode (e.g., Audio Receiver volume controls in the AUX mode). Or, if desired, you can perform Global Volume Unlock so that the volume controls of all devices can be independently operated in their own modes. The Comcast Custom 3-Device universal remote control can be set up to control a second device. For example, to have the unit control a TV, a Cable Box, and second TV, you will need to reassign the unused AUX key to operate the second TV as follows: 1. On the remote control, press AUX once. Then press and hold Setup until the AUX key blinks twice, then release Setup. Enter 9 - 9 - 2. The AUX key will blink twice. Press TV once, then press AUX once. The AUX key will blink twice. The AUX key is now ready to be programmed for your second TV. See Programming Device Control for instructions.
On the remote control, press a device key once (i.e., AUX or TV).
NOTE: Use the AUX key to program control of an Audio Amplifier or Receiver, a DVD Player, a HomeTheater-In-A-Box Device, a PVR (or DVR), or a VCR.
INSTALLING BATTERIES
1. 2. Pull back the remote controls battery cover and remove it. Insert the two (2) supplied AA batteries according to the + and marks in the battery case. Push the battery cover back into place. Test the unit by pressing any mode key (i.e., AUX, TV, or Cable). If batteries are inserted correctly, the selected mode key will light.
Press and hold Setup until the selected mode key blinks twice, then release Setup. Locate the code for your device in Manufacturers Codes on the back of this user guide. Brands are listed in alphabetical order with the most popular codes listed first. Enter the first four-digit code for your device. If you perform this procedure correctly, the selected mode key will blink twice.
NOTE: If you enter an invalid code, the selected mode key will display one long blink and exit the programming mode. Repeat steps 2 to 5 with a valid code.
Press Setup once to lock in the code.The TV key will blink twice. To search for the codes of another device, repeat steps 1 to 5, but substitute the AUX key for the auxiliary device you are searching for.
Unlocking Volume Control For A Single Device (Individual Volume Unlock):

CHECKING THE CODES
If you have set up the remote control using the Searching For Your Code procedure, you may need to find out which four-digit code is operating your equipment. Perform the following steps after setting up your devices to find out which four-digit code operates your equipment. For example, to find out which code is operating your TV: 1. 2. Turn on your TV. On the remote control, press TV once. Then press and hold Setup until the TV key blinks twice, then 5. 2.
PROGRAMMING CHANNEL CONTROL LOCK
By default, the remote controls channel-control capabilities are locked to the Cable Box. The affected keys are 0 ~ 9, CH+, CH-, Enter, and Last. This will guarantee that you do not inadvertently change a channel while in the TV mode. However, you can turn off this feature to allow full access to these keys in the TV and Cable modes.
NOTE: This feature does not affect the AUX mode.
NOTE: When the batteries need to be replaced, the remote control will stop working. Replace the old batteries and the unit will be restored to its full functionality, complete with your favorite settings.
