AromaGrandeD2.book Page 10 Tuesday, February 15, 2005 12:13 PM
Note: No coffee is used during this process.

What you will need

You can use any one of the following solutions to clean the machine: three (3) cups vinegar and three (3) cups water solution a 6-cup solution of three (3) cups non-pulp lemon juice concentrate and three (3) cups water, or six (6) cups coffee maker cleaning solution.
Follow the steps in the table below to season the coffee maker. Step 1 Action Fill the water reservoir (#2) with either: 2 three (3) cups vinegar and three (3) cups water solution a 6-cup solution of three (3) cups of non-pulp lemon juice concentrate and three (3) cups of water, or six (6) cups coffee maker cleaner solution.
Push thermal carafe (#7) into brewing area of the coffee maker. Result: The tab on the carafe lid depresses.
AromaGrandeD2.book Page 11 Tuesday, February 15, 2005 12:13 PM
Step 3 Plug in the coffee maker:

Action

Locate cord storage area (#11) on back of machine. Unwind and straighten cord thoroughly to remove kinks. Wind excess cord back into storage area. Plug into outlet. Caution: The cord has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). If plug does not fit fully in outlet, reverse plug. If plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to check outlet.
Results: 4 The backlite, On/Off light (#14) and Auto-On light (#19) illuminate for two (2) seconds. A tone sounds.

Fresh coffee beans

Start with freshly roasted beans. Keep the beans whole and grind them as needed to help preserve freshness. To keep coffee fresh, store it in an airtight container at room temperature. Coffees enemies are oxygen and moisture, so proper storage will keep coffee fresh.

Proper grind

It is important to use the proper grind because that impacts the amount of time the coffee and water spend together which affects flavor. Too finely ground coffee slows the water down too much, allowing it to take with it unpleasant flavor elements. Too coarsely ground coffee allows water to rush through the grinds, leaving the coffee weak and under-extracted.

Water quality

Always start with fresh, cold water. A cup of coffee is 98% water. The water used to make coffee should taste clean, fresh and free of impurities. Avoid water from a water softener, city water that tastes like chlorine, or well water that tastes or smells like iron or sulfur. If your local tap water tastes good then it is likely to make a good cup of coffee.

Proportions

The most important thing is to use the right proportion of coffee to water. The hot water interacts with the coffee to extract, or pull out, the desirable flavor components. Too much water or too little coffee results in over-extracted coffee.

How to Brew Coffee

Choosing the right coffee bean and grind
The best coffee begins with using top quality Arabica beans. We recommend Starbucks coffees, roasted to perfection and ground for the Starbucks Barista Aroma Grande Thermal Coffee Maker. Whole bean coffee should be ground for a flat bottom drip coffee filter at a medium grind.

Grinding your own beans

To achieve a medium grind coffee at home, run the coffee beans through your blade grinder for approximately 15 seconds.
Questions about grinding coffee?
If you have a question about the grind size or your home blade grinding equipment, please visit any Starbucks Coffee store, or call the warranty hotline at 1-800-334-5553.
Follow the steps in the table below to brew coffee. Step Plug in the coffee maker. Pull the Filter Basket Latch (#4) and swing out the filter basket holder. Note: Be sure the removable Internal Filter Basket (#5) is in place. If you choose to use a paper filter instead of the internal filter, use filter size #10. Action

Step 3

Action Refer to the following table and place the appropriate amount of ground coffee into the filter. Coffee (tablespoons) US measurements 21 Tbsp. 18 Tbsp. 14 Tbsp. 11 Tbsp. 7 Tbsp. Metric measurements Coffee (grams) 105 g 90 g 70 g 55 g 35 g Cold water (milliliters) 1850 ml 1625 ml 1300 ml 975 ml 650 ml Brewed cups 12 cups 10 cups 8 cups 6 cups 4 cups 62 oz. 55 oz. 44 oz. 33 oz. 22 oz. 12 cups (60 oz.) 10 cups (50 oz.) 8 cups (40 oz.) 6 cups (30 oz.) 4 cups (20 oz.) Cold water (ounces) Brewed 5 oz. cups
Note: As a general rule, we recommend a coffee to water proportion of two (2) level tablespoons (10g) of ground coffee to every six (6) ounces (180ml) of water. You can adjust this recipe to suit your personal taste.

Step 4

Action Swing the filter basket holder closed. Note: Be sure the filter basket is securely snapped into place before going to the next step.
Fill the water reservoir to the appropriate point on the Water Level Indicator (#3) using one of the following methods: Lift the water reservoir off of the machine and fill with cold water at the sink. Pour cold water into the water reservoir from the thermal carafe. Note: The water reservoir docking station has a drip tray that the water reservoir sits in. Any water that falls into the tray flows through the back of the coffee maker into an exit port. Dripping should be minimal.
Place the brew through lid on the thermal carafe and twist into position. Note: The brew through lid must be on the carafe to brew coffee. Result: The tab on the lid should be directly over the carafe handle.
Place the thermal carafe into the coffee maker. Hint: Preheating the carafe by filling and rinsing with hot water prior to brewing can assist in maintaining the overall temperature of your brewed coffee.
Press the On/Off button (#13) and the coffee will begin to brew. Result: The On/Off light will illuminate.

the grinder is turned off, adjusting the grind may be easier when the grinder is running. Avoid running the grinder at very fine settings without beans as it can damage the burrs.

Switch Operation

The Starbucks Barista is equipped with a specially designed On/Off switch. You may rotate the switch clockwise or counter clockwise from any position without damaging it. The quantity of ground coffee you need depends on the type of bean, coarseness of the grind, brewing method and personal taste. With use, you will determine the amount of time it takes to grind the quantity of coffee you need.
Front Mounted Pulse Button
For short duration grinding, the Starbucks Barista is equipped with a front mounted pulse button. It can be used for grinding directly into an espresso-brewing basket. Remove the grounds bin and position the espresso-basket inside the grinder directly below the pulse button (see photo). Push and hold the pulse button to grind. Grinding will stop when the button is released.
Note: It is important that the espresso
basket is held below the discharge chute so the coffee powder can free fall into the basket. Holding the basket up tight to the discharge chute will cause coffee to back up and jam your grinder.

Care and Cleaning

Cleaning the Housing and Hoppers
Switch the grinder off and remove the plug from the power supply. Remove any remaining beans from the bean hopper (it may be easiest to tip the grinder over and pour the beans into a bowl.). Remove the hopper by twisting it in a counterclockwise direction as far as it will turn, and then lift the bean hopper from the housing. Wash the hopper, hopper lid, and ground coffee bin in warm soapy water, rinse and dry. Do not put the bean hopper, hopper lid, or ground coffee bin in the dishwasher. Hand wash only. Do not immerse the grinder housing in water.

Caution

Cleaning the Burrs
If the grinder is used daily, the burrs should be cleaned every few weeks. Cleaning enables the burrs to achieve the most consistent grind possible. Cleaning also removes coffee oils, which can degrade the flavor of the ground coffee. Do not wash the burr.

Remove the Ring Burr

Pull the silicone seal off the top of the ring burr. Remove the ring burr by lifting it straight up out of the grinder by the lifting tabs. If the burr does not lift out, ensure that the grind adjustment tab is turned fully counterclockwise.

Cleaning the Ring Burr

Use the bristle brush (included with your grinder) to remove any loose coffee residue on the ring burr, the center cone burr and in the adjustment area. Vacuum or blow out the residual coffee. Wash the silicone seal in warm soapy water and dry.

Replacing the Ring Burr

Replace the ring burr by lining up the red tab on the ring burr with the red arrow on the adjustment ring, if it is not aligned rotate the adjustment ring fully counter clockwise. Wiggle and push down firmly on the ring burr to ensure that it seats properly.
Replacing the Silicone Seal
After replacing the ring burr, replace the silicone seal by lining up the two slots in the silicone seal with the small tabs on the top of the ring burr and slide the seal onto the ring burr.
Clean the Coffee-Dispensing Chute
Remove the grounds bin. Using your bristle brush, clean out any coffee grounds that may be accumulating in the coffee-dispensing chute. Clean out any ground coffee that has fallen in the bin area. Replace the grounds bin.
Replacing the Bean Hopper
To replace the bean hopper, line up the two tabs on the base of the hopper (with the small tab on the right side) with their respective slots in the top of the grinder housing and insert the hopper into the grinder. Once the hopper is in place rotate it clockwise to your desired grind setting.

Automatic Cleaning

A thorough, fast, and easy cleaning can be accomplished using Grindz grinder cleaner. Grindz is a product designed to dislodge coffee particles and absorb and remove odors and coffee oil residue. Simply place the recommended amount of Grindz (2 Tbs. ) into the empty grinder hopper. Adjust grind setting to 20, and operate as if grinding coffee beans until all of the Grindz has been ground. Once complete, we recommend passing twice as much coffee (4 Tbs.) through to remove any Grindz residue. Discard the ground coffee. For information on Grindz go to www. urnex.com. Grindz can be purchased at www.baratza.com

Troubleshooting

Grinder does not run when switched on. 1. 2. 3. Insure the hopper is correctly in place and rotated at least two clicks clockwise. Try the front mounted pulse switch. Check the wall outlet with another appliance.
Grinder runs when switched on, but coffee does not grind. 1. 2. Rotate the grind setting to 40 and run the grinder to free up packed coffee. The burrs require cleaning (see Cleaning the Burrs).
Grinder is operating normally, but stops abruptly. Immediately turn off the grinder. A foreign object, such as a pebble, green unroasted coffee bean or a twig, may have jammed the burrs. See Cleaning the Burrs.
The grind is not fine enough or coarse enough. 1. Check the grind adjustment. If that does not solve the adjust ment issues, the burrs could be warn and need to be replaced.
