INTRODUCTION
ELECTRICAL NOISE Amajorcauseofsonarproblems iselectricalnoise. This usually appearsonthe sonar's display as randompatterns of dots or lines. In severe cases, it can coverthe screen withblack dots, orcause the unit operateerraticly, completely or not at all. the To eliminate or minimize the effects of electrical noise, first tryto determine cause. Turn yourMagnaon, then turn off ASP(AdvancedSignal Processing). There should be a steadybottom signal on the display. To getstartedwith your Eagle unit,first readtheinstallationsection. This is whereit all begins. Improperinstallation cancause problems downthe road. Afteryou'vereadtheinstructions, installtheunit,then readtherest of the manual. The more you know about your unit, the better it will performfor you. Take this manual for referencewhen you head for the

water.

Ifyou find noiseinterference from an electricalinstrument, trolling motor,pump, or radio, try to isolate the problem. You can usually re-route the sonar unit's

If no noise displays on the sonar unit from electrical equipment, then make certain everything except the sonar unit is turned off, then stall the engine. Increase the RPMwiththe gearshiftin neutral. If noise appears on the display, the problem couldbe one of threethings;spark plugs, alternator, ortachometer liters, orrouting thesonarunit's wiring. When no noise appears on the sonar unit after all ofthe above tests, then the noise source is probably cavitation. Drill a hole in the dash for the power and transducercables. The best locationfor this hole is immediately underthegimbal bracket. This way, the bracket covers the hole. The smallest hole both the power and transducer cables canpassthrough isone inch. However, you can'tpass a poweror transducer connectorand another cablethrough a one inch
throughthehole from underthedash. Thendropthepowercabledown fromthefrontside ofthedash. Slidethebracket overthehole,then route the transducerand power cables out the slots in the bracket. Finally, fastenthe bracketto thedash. POWER CONNECTIONS The Magna II worksfrom a 12 volt DC system only. Forthebestresults, wnthe powercable directlyto the boat'sbattery. Keep thepowercable awayfromother boat wiring, especially theengine's wires. This will give the best isolation from electrical noise. If thesuppliedcable is not long enoughtoreachthebattery, splice #18 gaugeinsulated wire to it. You can attach thepowercableto an accessory powerbuss, however, you may or have problems with electrical interference. See page 28 for more
information on electrical noise.

3. The water maybe deeperthan the sonar's ability to findthe bottom. If the sonarcan'tfindthe bottomsignalwhileit's in the automatic mode, the digitalwill flashcontinuously. This is the most common problemif a partialarch is displayed. Seethe FishArch sectionin your owners manual formore information. 2. The sensitivitymay not be highenough. In orderforthe unit to displaya fish arch, it has to be ableto receive the fish's echo from the time it enters the cone until it leaves. ftthe sensitivityis nothighenough,the unitdisplaysthefish only when it is in the center of the cone. 3. Usethe Zoom feature, It is much easierto displayfish arches whenzoomed in on asmall range ofwaterthan a largeone. Forexample, you will have much betterluckseeingfish arches witha30 to 60foot range thana 0to 60foot range. Thisenlarges the targets, allowingthe displayto show much more detail.

Theseunitshavereversepolarity protection. No damagewill occurif the powerwires are reversed. However, theunitwill not work until the wires are aftached correctly.
SPEED/TEMPERATURE SENSOR INSTALLATION-
Magna II Plus Only Mountthespeed/temp sensor on the boat's transomin a location where the flow of water is the smoothest. There should be a minimum of turbulenceand air bubblesin the chosen location. The port (left)side of thetransomis preferred, however, thestarboard (right) side can be used ifnecessary. Do notmountthe speed sensorbehindstrakes, ribs, orthruhull fittings. Thesewill disturb the flow of waterto the speed sensor. In a typical installation, the speed sensor is mounted six to twelve inches fromthecenterline ofthehull. The sensormustalwaysbe in thewaterto function properly. Makecertain the chosen locationis in the water even at high speed or whenthe boat is on plane. Onceyoudeterminetheproper location, placethesensoronthetransom. Makecertain thesensor's bottom is flushwith the bottomofthehull. Mark the transomin four places, two in each slot. Drill a 5/32" mounting hole at eachlocation. Mount thesensortothe huH withfour#10 stainless steel screws. Use a good grade of caulking compoundto seal the screws. Adjustthesensorso it is flush with the bottom of the hull and tightenthe

screws.

Unitwon't turnon:
1. Checkthe powercable'sconnection at the unit. Also checkthe wiring. 2. Make certain the power cableis wired properly. The red wire connects to the positive batteryterminal, blackto negativeor ground. 3. Check the fuse. 4. Measure thebatteryvoltageatthe unit'spowerconnector.Itshouldbe atleast 11 volts. ifit isn't, the wiring tothe unit isdefective,thebatteryterminals orwiring on the terminals are corroded,or the battery needs charging.
Unit freezes, locks up, or operates erratically:
cablesaway interfering withthesonarunit. Re-routing the powerandtransducer from other electrical wiringon the boat may help. Route the sonarunit's power cabledirectlytothe battery insteadof througha fuse blockor ignition switch 2. Inspect the transducercablefor breaks,cuts,or pinchedwires. 3. Check both the transducerand power connectors. Make certain both are securelyplugged in to the unit. Weak bottomecho, digitalreadingserratic, or no fish sIgnals: 1. Make certain transducer is pointingstraightdown. Clean the lace of the transducer. Oil, dirt, andfuelcancauseafilmtoformonthetransducer, reducing its effectiveness. If the transducer Is mounted inside the hull, be sure it is shooting through only one layer of fiberglass andthat it issecurelybondedtothe hull. Do NOT use RN silicone rubberadhesive or Marinetexm. 26

SURVEYING A LAKE
Use this keyto turn the unit on. It also clears menu selections and the menus from the screen.
The most successful anglers on any body of waterare those who fish it day after day and year after year. Eventually, they learn the hot spots that produce fish consistently. They discoverthrough experience where, and at what depth, they can expect to find the fish they want at any season. And they realizethat these productive areas change throughout theyear depending on waterlevel, temperature, food, and otherfactors. With the Magna II, anyonecan eliminateguesswork and concentrate on theareas wherefish are likelyto be. Even if it's thefirsttimeon thelakel The most efficientway to becomeacquainted with a bodyof water is to surveyit with your MagnaIl. Start with a map of the lake, if possible, and indicatethe promising spots in relation to landmarks on shore. As you go about your survey, your Magna II will tell you the depth and type of bottom. It will also reveal suspended fish. Keep a few marker buoys in the boat, ready to toss overboard. When the Magna II indicates a school of fish, throw the buoy out. With the school thus marked, you can make your turn and come back to fish in exactly the right spot. This is essential when you're far from shore on a big lake. Unless you mark the school of fish when you're over it, you may not be ableto find it again. BAIT FISH The importance of bait fish to successfulfishing can't be over-emphasized. They are the principlefood of all game fish in most waters. Bait fish are the plankton feeding forage fish, such as minnows and shad. Bait fish can also be the young of game fish, such as crappies, bluegill, and bass.

Most bait fish concentrate within five feet of the surface where sunlight promotes the growth of the plankton on whichtheyfeed. One method of fishing is to use the Magna II to find the bait fish first. With the Fish ID feature off, a school of bait fish will look like a "cloud" on the display. Usually, game fish will be nearby, often directly beneath the school of bait fish.

The Magna II and Magna II Plus havemanymenus of featuresthat are accessedwith this key. UP and DOWNARROWS Use these keysto adjustvirtuallyeveryfeatureand functionon the unit. Use these keys to adjustthe sensitivity, chart speed, range, and more.
NOTE:The up arrowkeyalso stops and starts the chart whenno menus are displayed. In other words, anytime you wish to stopthe chart, first makecertain no menu isonthescreen. Thenpress theuparrow key. The chart will freezeand the word "STOP"appears at thetop right portionof the screen. To start thechart, press the up arrow key again. 4
DISPLAY - General The lights flash for about ten seconds when the Magna II is turned on. Three menus appear, one after the other. The menus are the lights (LAMP), feet-meter selection (FEET/METER), and contrast adjustment (DARK/LIGHT). To turnthe lights on, pressthe up arrow key. To switch from feet to meters, pressthe down arrow key when the proper menu appears. To adjust the contrast, wait for the DARK/LIGHT menu to appear. Nowpress theup arrow keytodarkenthe screen, thedownarrow to lighten it. Themenus disappearaftera few seconds. Ifyou don't want to wait, press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the menus fromthe screen. WhentheMagnaII is firstturnedon,thedisplayappears sirnilartotheone below. The unitis in the automatic mode andthe FishIDfeatureison. The depth range displays on the left side of the screen. In this example, the range is from 0 to 60 feet. The digital bottomdepth display shows atthe top left portion of the screen.

The temperature of water in the lake is seldom constant from top to bottom. Layers of different temperatures form, and the junction of a warm and cool layer of water is called a thermocline. The depth and thickness of Ihe thermoclinecan vary with the season or time of day. In deep lakes there maybe two or more at differentdepths. Thermoclines are important to fishermen becausethey are areas where fish are active. Many times baitfish will be abovethe thermoclinewhilelargergame fish will suspend in or just below it. The MagnaII candetectthis invisiblelayer in the water, but thesensitivity will probably have to be turned up to see it.

TheMagnaII and Magna II Plus usemenustoguideyouthroughtheunit's functions and features. The menu key accesses thesefeatures, allowing you to customize theunit to your particular needs and water conditions. All you have to do to leaveone menu and enteranotherispressthemenu key repeatedly. If you ever getlost in the menus, simply presstheON/ CLEARkey. This clearsthe menus from the screen. 5
Menus changedependingon the mode the unitis in. For example, lithe automaticmode is turnedoff, thesensitivity menu changesfrom "AUTO SENS"to "MAN SENS." Othermessages mayappearin menu boxesor new menus can appear, againdepending on previous selections. OPERATION
Very small fish probablywill not arch at all. Medium sized fish will show a partial arch, or a shape similar to an arch if they're in deep water. Largefish will arch, but turn thesensitivity up in deeperwaterto see the arch. Because of water conditions, such as heavy surface clutter, thermoclines, etc., the sensitivity sometimes cannot be increased enough to get fish arches. One of the best ways to get fish arches is to expand or "zoom" a segmentofthewater. For example, from45to 60 feet. The smallerthe segment, the betterthe screenresolution will be. The easiest way to do this on theMagna II is with the Zoom feature. Thisfeature expandsthe echoes, making it easier to see detail. For the best results, turn the sensitivity up as high as possible withoutgetting too much noise on the screen. In medium to deep water, this method should work to display fish arches. If you seefish signals whenthe unitis inthe manual mode, but don't get fish symbols when theFish 1.0.feature is on, try increasing the sensitivity
AUTOMATIC When the Magna II is first turned on, the automatic feature is enabled. This feature automatically adjusts the unit's range and sensitivity according to water conditions. It alwayskeepsthe bottom depth displayed in the lower portionof the screen.

IJTO MAN

To turn the automatic featureoff, press the menu key until the AUTO/MANmenu appears. Now pressthedown arrow key. This the highlights letters"MAN." The unitis now inthe manual mode. Waitafew seconds and the menu will scroll off the screen's leftside. Pressing the ON/CLEAR key also clears it.

WATERTEMPERATURE AND THERMOCLINES Water temperature has an important-if not controlling-influence upon the activities of all fish. Fish are cold blooded and their bodies are always the temperature of the surrounding water. During the winter, colder water slows down their metabolism. At this time, they need about a fourth as much food as they consume in the summer. Most fish don't spawn unless the water temperature is within rather narrow limits. The surface temperature meterbuilt intotheMagna Plus helps identify the desired surface water spawning temperatures for various species. Trout can't survive in streams that get too warm. Bass and otherfish eventuallydie out whenstocked in lakes that remain too cold during the summer. While somefish havea widertemperature tolerancethan others, each has a certain range within which it tries to stay. Schooling fish suspended over deep water lie at the level that provides this temperature. We assume they are the most comfortable

You can't adjusttherange when the Magna II is in the automatic mode. It is adjustable whenthe unit is inthemanual mode,however. To do so,first puttheunitin

The Magna II and II Plus havethefollowingranges: 10, 20, 40, 60, 120, 240, 480, and 900 feet.
Fish arches are created when the cone of sound passesover a fish. The distance to a fish when the cone first strikes it is shown as "A" below. When the center of the cone strikes the fish, the distance is shorter as shown "B". As the cone leaves the fish, the distance increasesagain as shown in "C". BOATS DIRECTION OF TRAVEL

The zoomfeatureenlarges all echoes on thescreen. Ifthe unit is in the automatic mode, it tracks the bottom signal, always keeping it near the bottom of the screen. This lets you see small detail, at the same time enlargingall echoes that appearonthescreen. Theunitdoesn'ttrackthe bottom in themanual mode, and the adjustments are slightlydifferent. To zoom the display, first pressthe MENU keyuntil the RANGE/ZOOM

Whenthe Fish l.D. mode is off, thedepth of the waterwill affect thesize and shape of the fish arch due to the cone angle diameter. For example, if the cone passes over a fish in shallow water, the signal displayedon theMagna II may not arch at all. This is due to thenarrow cone diameter and the resolution limitations of thedisplay.

TheMagna II and II Plus have the following zoom ranges:
10, 20, 30, 60,120,240, and 480 feet
5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, and 150 meters.
Both 8 degree and 20 degree transducers give accurate bottom readings, even though the bottom signal is much wider on the 20 degree model. This is becauseyou are seeing more of the bottom. Remember, the shallowedge of the signal shows you the true depth. The rest of thesignaltells you whetheryou are over rocks, mud, etc. SIGNAL INTERPRETATION Your Magna II gives an accurate picture ofthebottom that your boat is passing. A bottom of firm sand, gravel, shell, or haitI clay returns a fairly wide signal. If the automatic mode is off and the signal narrows down, then it means that you have moved over a mud bottom. Mud absorbs the sound wave and returns a weak signal. Turn up the sensitivity to see a better bottom signal.
Big rocks or stumps on a smooth bottom send back signals above the bottom level signal. The height of the signal dependson the target's height. As you pass over a post, it should be clearly visible as a short line extending abovethe bottom signal.
When the unit is switched into the zoom mode, the letters "ZM" appearatthe top of the screen. Thezoomwindowsize displays in the top right corner of the screen. Toturn thezoomfeatureoff, press themenu key untilthe RANGE/ZOOM menu appears. Nowpresstheup arrow key. Thisswitches theunit intotherangemode, whichturnsthe zoom feature off.
Zoom - Manual Operation To operatethezoom featurewhentheMagna II is in themanual mode, firstpressthemenu key. Thenpressthedown arrow key in theRANGE/ ZOOM menu toplacethe Magnainthezoommode. Thezoomsize menu automatically appearsnext. You canchangethe zoomsize by pressing theupor downarrows. After youselect the desired zoomsize, pressthe menu key until the "MOVE ZOOM" menu appears. This menu letsyoumovethezoom ZM20 windowupordowninone footincrements by the arrow keys. Thus, you can pressing move the zoom window up towards the lyiflhllsurface,downtothebottom,or anywhere in IILJVC. 4-C between. The windowstays whereyou put ZOOM it. It doesn'ttrack the bottom signal.
A steep slope returns a wide signal, the steeper the wider. Signals returned from a high underwater cliff are usually the widest of all.

TRANSDUCER CONE ANGLES

SENSITIVITY

The sound waves from the transducer spread out into the water in a cone shaped beam. This looks much like the beam from a flashlight. The angle between theoutside edges of the cone is the cone angle.
Eagle offers a choice of transducers with either an 8 or 20 degree cone angle. The transducer supplied with the Magna II has a 20 degreecone angle. Typically, wide cone angle transducers (20 degrees) are ideal for operating in shallow to medium water depths. The 20 degree cone angle allows you to see more of the underwater world. In 15 feet of waterthe20 degree cone covers an area about six feet across. The 8 degree transducer covers only about a two foot circle.

The sensitivity menu lets you control theunit's abilityto pick up echoes. A low sensitivity level excludes much of the bottom information, fish signals, and other detail. High sensitivity settingslets you see features, butit can also clutterthescreen with noiseand otherunwantedsignals. Typically, the bestsensitivity level shows a good, solid bottomsignalwith

grayline.

The 20 degree transducer is almost always the best to use in fresh water, the 8 degree mostly in salt water. In a deep waterenvironment, (300 feet - fresh water, 100 feet - salt water) the narrow cone angle is more desirable. Since the sound energy is concentrated in a smaller area, it can penetrate to muchdeeper depths.
The MagnaII adjuststhesensitivity level to keepa solid bottomsignal on thescreen. It adds a littleextrawhenit's inthe automatic mode. Thisgives it thecapability to showfish and other detail. However,situationsocur whereit becomes necessary to increase or decreasethe sensitivitylevel. Typically, this occurswhenyou wishto see more detail, so you need to increase the sensitivity. The procedureto adjust it is the samewhether theunit is in the automatic or manual mode.
Tochangethesensitivity level, first press the menu key until the sensitivity menu appears. If the unit is in automatic, the menu shows "AUTOSENS." Otherwise,themenu shows "MAN SENS." GRAYLINE

Grayline letsyoudistinguish between strong and weakechoes. It "paints" gray on targets that are stronger than a preset level. This shows the differencebetween a hardor soft bottom, large fishversus smallerones, or rocksand brush on the bottom. For example, a soft, muddy, or weedy bottom returns a weakersignal which showsa narrow or no gray line. A hard bottom returns a strong signal that causesa wide gray line.

The Fish ID featureidentifies targetsthat meet certainconditions as fish. The micro-computer analyses all echoes and eliminates surface clutter, thermoclines, and other undesirable signals. In mostinstances, remaining targets are fish. The Fish ID feature displays symbols onthescreen in placeoftheactualfish echoes. Therearefoursymbolsizes:tiny, small, medium,and large. These show the relative size between targets. In otherwords,itdisplaysasmallfishsymbolwhenitthinksatarget is asmall fish, a mediumfish symbolon a largertarget, etc. The micro-computeris sophisticated, but it can be fooled. It can't distinguish between fish and other suspended objectssuch as turtles, submerged floats, air bubbles, etc. Individual tree limbs extending outwards from a group of limbs are the hardestobjects for the Fish ID feature to distinguishfrom fish. You may see Fish ID symbols on the screenwhen,infact,thereareno fish. Practicewiththe whenthe Fish unit ID feature is on and offto becomemorefamiliarwith Fish ID. The Magna II and Magna II Plus have the unique ability to viewtargetsouttothe side of the boat. This feature is called 'side scan" and requiresthe optionalScanPactransducer accessory package. The ScanPac consists of a transducer, adjustable metalstrap, and a "'1" cable. Thetransducer attaches to the trollingmotorwith the adjustable metal strap. The "'1" cable connects both the ScanPac
transducer and the Magna II's normal transducer to the Magna II's transducer connector. See the ScanPac's installation instructions for more detail.
CHARTSPEED The rate echoes scroll across the screen is called the chart speed. It's adjustable by pressing the menu key until the chart speed menu appears. Chart speed is set to maximumwhenthe MagnaII is firstturnedon. To decreaseit, press thedownarrow key. Pressthe up arrow keyto increase thespeed again. To usetheMagna II in the side scan mode, repeatedly press the MENU key until the SideScan menu appears. Nowpress the up arrow key to turn the side scan feature on. The screen shown at right appears.
Target echoes appear as short, horizontal lines on the left side of the screen. Fish ID symbols appear on the right side of the screen when the unit's computer thinks a group of echoes are fish. When a Fish ID symbol appears, the distancetiomthe symbol tothe boat shows atthebottomofthe screen. Intheexample shown at right! afish symbolis 27feet fromtheboat. After thefish symboldisappears, thedisplay attheboffom ofthescreenreverts to the digital depth display. See thescreen on theleft. The waterdepth is 64 feet. This is the distance from the bottom to the depth sounding transducer, not the side scan. By slowly rotating your trolling motor, a large areaaround the boat can be scanned. SIDE SCAN-RANGE

INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing an Eagle sonar. Your Magna or Magna III Plus is a high quality sonar designed for both professional and novice fishermen. These units have an automatic feature that finds and displays the bottom, fish, structure, and more! All you have to do is press the on key. However, if you wish to fine tune the unit, all you have to do is press the menu key. The Magna series has powerful features available through easy-to-use menus. To get started with your Eagle unit, first read the installation section. This is where it all begins. Improper installation can cause problems down the road. After youve read the instructions, install the unit, then read the rest of the manual. The more you know about your unit, the better it will perform for you. Take this manual for reference when you head for the water.

INSTALLATION - Bracket You can install the Magna III on the top of a dash or from an overhead with the supplied bracket. It can also be installed in the dash with an optional IDA-3 mounting kit. If you use the supplied bracket, you may be interested in the optional GBSA-1 swivel bracket kit. This converts the Magna III's gimbal bracket to a swivel mount which can be used on the dash or overhead mounting positions. Installation instructions for the in-dash and swivel mounting kits are supplied with the adapter kits. Mount the Magna III in any convenient location, provided there is clearance when its tilted for the best viewing angle. Holes in the brackets base allow wood screw or through bolt mounting. It may be necessary to place a piece of plywood on the back side of thin panels to reinforce the panel. Make certain there is enough room behind the unit to attach the power and transducer cables. Drill a hole in the dash for the power and transducer cables. The best location for this hole is immediately under the gimbal bracket. This way, the bracket covers the hole. The smallest hole the Magna IIII's power and transducer cable connectors can pass through is 3/4". However, you cant pass a power or transducer connector and another cable through a 5/8" hole. Therefore, after drilling the hole, pass the transducer connector up through the hole from under the dash. Then drop the power cable down from the front side of the dash. After installing the transducer, route its cable to the unit by passing it through the hole from under the dash. Slide the bracket over the hole, then route the transducer and power cables out the slot in the back of the bracket. Finally, fasten the bracket to the dash.

Clean the chosen area of the hull before attaching the suction cup. Locate the transducer on the hull as shown below. Don't allow the bracket to go below the hull, as water pressure against it can cause the suction cup to come off at speed. Moisten the cup, then press it onto the hull as firmly as possible. Tie the nylon cord to the boat and route the transducer cable to the sonar unit. Plug the transducer connector into the "Y" power cable on the Magna III. Your portable sonar is now ready for use.
PERMANENT MOUNT TRANSDUCER INSTALLATION The HS-WSBK supplied with your Magna III is a transom mount transducer. It can be installed on any outboard or stern-drive (inboard\outboard) powered boat. It can also be permanently installed inside the boat to "shoot-through" the hull on some fiberglass boats. The kick-up mounting bracket helps prevent damage if the transducer strikes an object while the boat is moving. If the transducer does kickup, the bracket can easily be pushed back in place without tools. Read the enclosed transducer installation manual carefully before attempting the installation. Determine which of the mounting positions is right for your boat. Use extreme care if mounting the transducer inside the hull, since once it is epoxied into position, the transducer usually cannot be removed. Remember, the transducer location is the most critical part of a sonar installation. If it isnt done properly, the sonar cant perform at its designed potential.
KEYBOARD BASICS The unit sounds a tone when you press any key. This tells you the unit has accepted a command. ON/CLEAR Use this key to turn the unit on. It also clears menu selections and the menus from the screen. OFF This key turns the unit off. MENU The Magna III and Magna III Plus have many features that are accessed with this key. To see the first menu, press the MENU key. To see the other menus, press the MENU key repeatedly. UP and DOWN ARROWS Use these keys to adjust virtually every feature and function on the unit. NOTE: The up arrow key also stops the chart when no menus are displayed. In other words, anytime you wish to stop the chart, first make certain no menu is on the screen. Now press the up arrow key. The chart freezes and the word STOP appears at the top of the screen. To start the chart, press the up arrow key again. DISPLAY - General The lights flash for about ten seconds when the Magna III is turned on. Three menus appear, one after the other. The menus are the lights (LAMP), feet-meter selection (FEET/METER), and contrast adjustment (DARK/LIGHT). To turn the lights on, press the up arrow key. To switch from feet to meters, press the down arrow key when the proper menu appears. To adjust the contrast, wait for the DARK/LIGHT menu to appear. Now press the up arrow key to darken the screen, the down arrow to lighten it. The menus disappear after a few seconds. If you dont want to wait, press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the menus from the screen. When the Magna III is first turned on, the display appears similar to the one at right. The unit is in the automatic mode and the Fish

ID feature is on. The depth range displays on the upper left side of the screen. On the screen at the bottom of the previous page, the range is from 0 to 60 feet and the bottom depth is 37.3 feet. OPERATION MENUS The Magna III and Magna III Plus use menus to guide you through the units functions and features. The menu key accesses these features, allowing you to customize the unit to your particular needs and water conditions. All you have to do to leave one menu and enter another is press the menu key repeatedly. If you ever get lost in the menus, simply press the ON/CLEAR key. This clears the menus from the screen. Menus change depending on the mode the unit is in. For example, if the automatic mode is turned off, the sensitivity menu changes from AUTO SENS to MAN SENS. Other messages may appear in menu boxes or new menus can appear, again depending on previous selections. On the screen shown on the previous page, the lamp menu is showing. AUTOMATIC When the Magna III is first turned on, the automatic feature is enabled. This feature automatically adjusts the units range and sensitivity according to water conditions. It always keeps the bottom depth displayed in the lower portion of the screen. To turn the automatic feature off, press the menu key until the AUTO/MAN menu appears. Now press the down arrow key. This highlights the letters MAN. The unit is now in the manual mode. Wait a few seconds and the menu will scroll off the screens left side. Pressing the ON/CLEAR key also clears it. To turn the automatic feature on again, repeat the above steps, except this time press the up arrow key. RANGE You cant adjust the range when the Magna III is in the automatic mode. It is adjustable when the unit is in the manual mode, however. To do so, first put the unit in the manual mode. Now press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the screen. Then press the menu key until the RANGE SEL menu appears as shown below. The current range shows at the bottom of the
menu. In this case, the range is 60 feet. Now press the up arrow key to decrease the range, the down arrow key increases the range. After you select the desired range, press the ON/ CLEAR key to clear the display. If you wait a few seconds, it will automatically clear. The Magna III and III Plus have the following ranges: 10, 20, 40, 60, 120, 240, 480, and 900 feet. and 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 100, 200, and 300 meters. ZOOM The zoom feature enlarges all echoes on the screen. If the unit is in the automatic mode, it tracks the bottom signal, always keeping it near the bottom of the screen. This lets you see small detail, at the same time enlarging all echoes that appear on the screen. The unit doesnt track the bottom in the manual mode, and the adjustments are slightly different. Zoom - Automatic Operation To zoom the display, first press the MENU key until the RANGE/ZOOM menu appears as shown at right. Now press the down arrow key. This switches the unit into the zoom mode. A new menu immediately appears as shown below. This is the zoom size menu. Zoom size is the distance between the upper limit and the lower limit. The upper limit shows at the top left corner of the screen. The lower limit is in the bottom left corner. For example, if the upper limit is 40 feet and the lower limit is 70 feet, the zoom window size is 30 feet. The word TRACK appears in this menu when you first activate the zoom as shown at right.

This helps distinguish fish from structure, or the larger fish from a smaller one.
Grayline is adjustable. Since it shows the difference between strong and weak echoes, changing the level may require a different sensitivity setting. To change the Grayline level, first press the MENU key until the Grayline menu appears. Now press the up arrow key to increase the level, the down arrow to decrease it. The percentage of Grayline now in use shows in this menu. Echoes scrolling onto the screen will also show the effects of the Grayline change. If you reach the maximum or minimum level, a tone sounds alerting you to the limits. The level chosen by the Magna III when its first turned on is usually adequate for most conditions. Experiment with your unit to find the Grayline setting thats best. FISH ID FEATURE The Fish ID feature identifies targets that meet certain conditions as fish. The microcomputer analyses all echoes and eliminates surface clutter, thermoclines, and other undesirable signals. In most instances, remaining targets are fish. The Fish ID feature displays symbols on the screen in place of the actual fish echoes. There are four symbol sizes: tiny, small, medium, and large. These show the relative size between targets. In other words, it displays a small fish symbol when it thinks a target is a small fish, a medium fish symbol on a larger target, etc. The microcomputer is sophisticated, but it can be fooled. It can't distinguish between fish and other suspended objects such as turtles, submerged floats, air bubbles, etc. Individual tree limbs extending outwards from a group of limbs are the hardest objects for the Fish ID feature to distinguish from fish. You may see Fish ID symbols on the screen when, in fact, there are no fish. Practice with the unit when the Fish ID feature is on and off to become more familiar with Fish ID. When the Magna III is first turned on, the Fish ID feature is automatically turned on, also. To turn this feature off, press the menu key until the Fish ID features menu appears as shown at right. Now press the down arrow key. This turns the feature off. To turn it back on, repeat the above steps, but press the up arrow key instead.

The Fish ID feature cant be used when the Magna III is in the manual mode. If you turn the automatic feature off, the Fish ID feature will automatically be turned off, also. FISH TRACK The Magna III automatically displays the depth of a target when the Fish ID feature places a fish symbol on the screen as shown below. This feature is automatically enabled when the Magna III is turned on. To turn it off or on again, press the MENU key repeatedly until the Fish Track menu appears as shown below. Now press the down arrow key to turn it off. Remember, Fish ID must be on in order to use the Fish Track feature.

You cant stop the chart while a menu is displayed. Now press the up arrow key. The chart will freeze and the word STOP appears at the top right portion of the screen. To start the chart, press the up arrow key again.

DIG 1 (Digital #1) This is the first digital only screen. It shows the digital depth display at the top of the screen in very large numbers. The shallow and deep alarm settings are displayed beneath the digital depth. No chart shows on this screen.
DIG 2 (Digital #2) The digital depth display shows at the top of this screen in very large digits. The digital temperature, speed, and log shows beneath the depth. The log starts counting when the Magna III Plus is first turned on. When the Magna III Plus is turned off, the log is reset to zero.
ALARMS FISH ALARM The Fish Alarm sounds a tone when a fish symbol appears on the screen. To use the fish alarm, press the menu key until the FISH ALARM menu appears on the screen. Now press the up arrow key to turn the alarm on. Repeat the above steps to turn the fish alarm off. (Note: If the Fish ID feature is off, it will be turned on when you turn the fish alarm on.) DEPTH ALARMS The depth alarms are triggered only by the bottom signal. No other echoes will activate these alarms. The depth alarms consist of a shallow and deep alarm. The shallow alarm sounds an alarm tone when the bottom goes shallower than the alarms setting. The deep alarm sounds a tone when the bottom goes deeper than its setting. Both alarms adjust the same, although through different menus. Shallow Alarm To set the shallow alarm, press the menu key repeatedly until the SHAL ALARM menu appears. Press the down arrow key to increase the shallow alarm's depth setting, the up arrow key decreases it. The number in the shallow alarms menu box shows the current shallow alarm setting. When the number reaches the desired setting, release the arrow key. When the bottom depth goes shallower than the alarms setting an alarm tone sounds. At the same time the alarm sounds, a message box appears on the screen as shown at right. Press the up arrow key to silence the alarm. This will turn the alarm sound off until the shallow alarm is triggered again. To turn the alarm off, press the menu key until the shallow alarm menu appears. Then press the up arrow key until the word OFF appears.

Deep Alarm The deep alarm adjusts the same as the shallow alarm. Use the DEEP ALARM menu to adjust the deep alarm. When the bottom signal goes deeper than the setting, an alarm tone sounds. LIGHTS The Magna III and Magna III Plus display is backlighted for night use. To turn the backlights on or off, press the menu key repeatedly until the LAMP menu appears. Now press the up arrow to turn the lights on or the down arrow to turn them off. The menu will clear automatically after a few seconds. FEET/METER The Magna III and Magna III Plus can show the depth in feet or meters. The Magna III Plus can also show temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius, speed in statute miles per hour or knots, and distance (log) in statute miles or nautical miles. When either unit is in the metric mode, all depth readings, ranges, zooms, and alarm settings are in meters. When a unit is in the feet mode, all of the above settings are in feet. To change from feet to meters or vice-versa, press the menu key until the FEET/METER menu appears. Press the down arrow key to switch to metric, the up arrow to switch to feet. Displays show in feet when the unit is first turned on. The menu will clear automatically after a few seconds or you can press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the screen.
DISPLAY CONTRAST The units display contrast is adjustable to suit different lighting conditions. This will help you see the screen from different angles, or at various times of the day. To adjust the contrast, press the menu key until the DARK/LIGHT menu appears. To
decrease it, press the down arrow key. Press the up arrow key to increase the contrast. The bar graph in the Dark/Light menu box shows a graph of the contrast. The screen will also show the effects of the change. If you reach the maximum or minimum level, a tone sounds alerting you to the limits. The menu will clear automatically after a few seconds or you can press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the screen.
ASP (Advanced Signal Processing) ASP is a program embedded in the Magna IIIs computer that is specifically designed to eliminate noise. It continually monitors the signals from the receiver, determines which echoes are noise and rejects them. This allows true target echoes to display on the screen with a minimum of clutter. This feature is especially useful since it typically lets you operate the boat at all speeds without adjusting the sensitivity or other controls. When the Magna III or Magna III Plus is first turned on, ASP is enabled. To turn ASP off, press the menu key repeatedly until the ASP menu appears. Now press the up arrow to turn it on or the down arrow to turn it off. The menu will clear automatically after a few seconds or you can press the ON/CLEAR key to clear the screen.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! If your unit is not working, or if you need technical help, please use the following troubleshooting section before contacting the factory customer service department. It may save you the trouble of returning your unit. TROUBLESHOOTING Unit wont turn on: 1. Check the power cables connection at the unit. Also check the wiring. 2. Make certain the power cable is wired properly. The red wire connects to the positive battery terminal, black to negative or ground. 3. Check the fuse. 4. Measure the battery voltage at the units power connector. It should be at least 11 volts. If it isnt, the wiring to the unit is defective, the battery terminals or wiring on the terminals are corroded, or the battery needs charging. Unit freezes, locks up, or operates erratically: 1. Electrical noise from the boats motor, trolling motor, or an accessory may be interfering with the sonar unit. Rerouting the power and transducer cables away from other electrical wiring on the boat may help. Route the sonar units power cable directly to the battery instead of through a fuse block or ignition switch 2. Inspect the transducer cable for breaks, cuts, or pinched wires. 3. Check the transducer and power connector. Make certain it's securely plugged in to the unit.
Weak bottom echo, digital readings erratic, or no fish signals: 1. Make certain transducer is pointing straight down. Clean the face of the transducer. Oil, dirt, and fuel can cause a film to form on the transducer, reducing its effectiveness. If the transducer is mounted inside the hull, be sure it is shooting through only one layer of fiberglass and that it is securely bonded to the hull. Do NOT use RTV silicone rubber adhesive or MarinetexTM. 2. Electrical noise from the boats motor can interfere with the sonar. This causes the sonar to automatically increase its Discrimination or noise rejection feature. This can cause the unit to eliminate weaker signals such as fish or even structure from the display.
3. The water may be deeper than the sonars ability to find the bottom. If the sonar cant find the bottom signal while its in the automatic mode, the digital will flash continuously. It may change the range to limits far greater than the water you are in. If this happens, place the unit in the manual mode, then change the range to a realistic one, (for example, 0-100 feet) and increase the sensitivity. As you move into shallower water, a bottom signal should appear. 4. Check the battery voltage. If the voltage drops, the units transmitter power also drops, reducing its ability to find the bottom or targets.

in shallow water, or when the boat is at rest. In nearly all cases, the cause of the malfunction will be the location and/or angle of the transducer. The face of the transducer must be placed in a location that has a smooth flow of water at all boat speeds. Read your transducer owners manual for the best mounting position.
