Ducati 999R and 999S ECU connection

AIM has developed special applications for many of the most popular ECU: by special applications we mean user friendly systems which allow to easily connect your ECU to our high tech data loggers: user needs only to install harness between the logger and the ECU. Once connected, the logger displays (and/or records, depending on the logger and on the ECU data stream and configuration) values like RPM, engine load, throttle position (TPS), air and water temperatures, battery voltage, speed, gear, lambda value (air/fuel ratio) analog channels All AIM loggers include free of charge Race Studio 2 software, a powerful tool to configure the system and analyze recorded data on your PC. Warning: once the ECU is connected to the logger it is necessary to set it in the logger configuration in Race Studio 2 software (refer to the ECU protocols for more details). Warning: for any further information concerning ECU firmware/software settings and/or upgrading it is always recommended to address to the ECU dealer.
IAW 5.9M ECU is installed as stock on many Ducati models (see appendix). ECU protocol has been developed and tested by AIM on the following bikes: 999R 999S
2 CAN/ K Line communication setup
Ducati ECU is equipped with a CAN and K Line (managed just by ECU Bridge and EVO4) communication setup used to communicate parameters to an external logger whose standard setup are shown here below.
3 Connection to AIM loggers
ECU can be connected to AIM loggers in three different ways: directly, or using the connector placed on the dashboard (CAN communication), or to the AMP connector (K Line connection). Moreover - depending on the logger - it is possible to connect both lines to the AIM data acquisition system.
3.1 CAN connection
3.1.1 Direct connection between AIM loggers and Marelli IAW 5.9M ECU
IAW 5.9M is equipped with two 38 pins connectors, named Body and Engine see below: engine is black (on the left). Body connector is grey (on the right).
To connect AIM loggers to Ducati ECU: connect AIM cable labelled CAN+ to pin 20 of Body connector. connect AIM cable labelled CAN- to ground.
3.1.2 Dashboard connector
Connector is placed on the back of the dashboard (see images below).
To connect AIM loggers to ECU using the dashboard connector: connect AIM cable labelled CAN+ to pin 14 (brown/white twisted cable) of the Ducati stock Dashboard connector. connect AIM cable labelled CAN - to ground. 12 V (connected to the vehicle master switch) is on pin 21 (red/black cable).
3.2 K Line connection
to ECU straight; to AMP connector placed near the ECU (see the related paragraph).
There are 2 ways to connect the loggers to K Line on Ducati:
3.2.1 Direct connection between ECU Bridge or EVO4 to Marelli IAW 5.9 ECU
The connection mode depends on the logger; here below EVO4 and ECU Bridge connections are explained. EVO4 connection To connect EVO4 directly to ECU: connect the yellow cable labelled Linea K (of the 5 pins male connector supplied with EVO4 kit) to pin 16 (k line) of the ECU. Note: put 1K Ohm resistance between Kline and 12V. ECU Bridge connection To connect ECU Bridge directly to ECU: Connect pin 7 of OBDII male connector to pin 16 (K Line ) of the ECU. VBatt (connected to the vehicle master switch) is on pin 21 (red/black cable) on dashboard connector (see related paragraph). Note : AIM does not supply a proper interface to connect Ducati to ECU Bridge (OBDII version); it is suggested to build a wiring to allow an easier connection.
3.2.2 K Line connection using AMP connector
AMP connector is placed near the ECU (see images below). The connection mode depends on the logger; here below EVO4 and ECU Bridge connections are explained.
EVO4 connection To joint EVO4 to AMP connector: connect yellow cable labelled Linea K (of the 5 pins male connector supplied with EVO4 kit) to pin 3 (orange/white cable) of the AMP connector. connect cable labelled GND (of the 5 pins male connector supplied with EVO4 kit) to pin 2 (purple/black cable) of the AMP connector. Note: put 1K Ohm resistance between EVO4 and AMP connector. ECU Bridge connection To connect ECU Bridge to AMP: Connect pin 7 of OBDII male connector to pin 3 (orange/white cable) of the AMP connector. VBatt (connected to the vehicle master switch) is on pin 21 (red/black cable) on dashboard connector (see related paragraph). for the Ducati 999S (2003, 2004)
We have prepared Akrapovic EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL and EVOLUTION (open) systems for the S version of the mighty Italian rocket, which have a major effect on the performance of the twin. In addition to the performance, the systems are also visually appealing, and noticeably different from our Evolution system for the 999 Biposto. In addition to the EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL version for the 999 S (muffler length 350 mm) intended for everyday riders, we have also developed an EVOLUTION (open) version with a shorter, 300 mm canister, which fits well with the single-seater monoposto cowling and does not allow the rear light bracket and license-plate holder to be mounted. This version is louder than the EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL. We have also developed optional titanium header tubes for both versions. PERFORMANCE Measurements of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL system (muffler: 350 mm) on the DUCATI 999 S (without noise damper): Power: the Italian twin gets the strongest effect from the Akrapovic EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL exhaust system in the range from 3000 rpm to 6000 rpm and above 8000 rpm. The already high-performance engine receives new air passages, which really open up the performance potential which can be seen on the graph of the power curve. The max. increased power is 9 HP at 4800 rpm, with max. power of 129.8 HP at 10250 rpm. Torque: the torque results are even better. Between 3000 and 6000 rpm the torque delivery is exceptional; there will be no need to worry about a lack of grunt at low revs. This also guarantees smooth riding in high gears at low revs. And of course, in keeping with the character of the EVOLUTION exhaust system, there is no lack of torque at high revs, either. CONFIGURATION The EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL system (350 mm version) is designed in a 2-1-2 configuration and is based on the previously developed Evolution system, so there are certain similarities. The conical header tubes are made of high-quality stainless steel, while the Y conical link pipe is made of titanium. The header assembly is composed of three parts: a front header tube and a rear header tube, which are both attached to the header tube connector (a combination of a collector and extensions of the front and rear header tubes) with free-floating joints held together using high-quality silicon-shielded tensioning springs. In order to maximize performance, all versions of the Akrapovic EVOLUTION systems for the 999S have interference crossover tubes installed between the header tubes. Each system also includes two fittings for installing lambda sensors. The link pipe is a special Y shape and is attached to the header assembly using a free-floating joint, while it is welded to the muffler. The double inlet into the muffler is continued with dual outlet tubes at the back of the muffler. The muffler is very distinctive, with a quite different outlet cap from the Evolution system for the 999 Biposto. The dual outlet tubes give it a real racing look. The muffler is attached to the frame using a metal clamp. The outer sleeve is available only in titanium, which goes extremely well with the refined lines of the Ducati. The metal parts in the interior of the muffler are also made entirely of titanium. All Akrapovic EVOLUTION exhaust systems for the Ducati 999S are also available with an optional carbon-fiber heat shield which is mounted onto the link pipe. Due to the stock design of the motorcycle, the carbon-fiber bracket on the underside of the muffler carries the rear lights and the license-plate holder. As mentioned, the EVOLUTION (open) system with the 300 mm muffler does not allow the rear light bracket and license-plate holder to be mounted. The muffler includes special performance inserts mounted in both outlet tubes. These inserts are not intended to control the noise output of the system, and therefore the system is not intended for street use. OPTIONS An Akrapovic carbon-fiber heat shield is also available as an option. Titanium header tubes are also available for both the EVOLUTION (open) and EVOLUTION STREET LEGAL versions.
