MY 1992-2005 Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis Fatal Fire Crashes, 1993-2006 This table includes known deaths in fire crashes obtained from NHTSAs Fatal Analysis Crash System (FARS) for Calendar Years 1993-2006 and from public records for other years and for crashes not listed in FARS. Where FARS indicates fire is the most harmful event, that is indicated. Where FARS indicates vehicle in transport, striking tree or other object, that is indicated. As the US Department of Transportation pointed out in the GM side saddle gas tank case, FARS often misstates the most harmful event as other than fire when fire is the most harmful event and the cause of death. An example of this in Crown Victoria fires is the December 11, 2001 crash in Baldwin County, Alabama where FARS lists the most harmful event as striking a tree when in fact fire was the cause of death according to autopsy reports. Also, in the November 11, 2002 crash in Hallandale, Florida, FARS does not record a fire in the crash when in fact fire was the cause of death for all five victims, according to autopsy reports.
