I bought an 8850 and the first thing that happened to it upon returning to the Philippines from the Middle-East, It lost signal.

Phone section I found a Nokia 8850 for £177.00 boxed without a sim card and able to use the pay as you go network.

Flagship models along with the Nokia 8890. So what is all the fuss about?. Before purchasing my Nokia 8850 handset I was using a Nokia 7110 (and you will be seeing a review of that shortly.

1. PSION 5 CONFIGURATION If Psion Message Suite is not installed on your device, please download it from www.psion.com and follow the installation instructions given there. Message Suite is an integrated set of applications which provides email, fax and web-browsing capabilities for the Psion Computers Series 5 handheld computer. This guide is for Message Suite version 1.52. After successful installation of Psion Message Suite you can proceed with the Nokia 8850 specific steps listed below: 1.1 General Rules About Infrared in the Nokia 8850 When you are making a connection (call) first activate the infrared reception in the Nokia 8850 by pressing Menu and clicking the up button once and then clicking "Select"; then you can start the dialing procedure in the Psion. The infrared connection is released when the call is ended. 1.2 Psion 5 Modem Configuration 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 1.3 Psion 5 Dial-up Connection Configuration 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Select Control Panel Select Internet Select New Select Based Upon: Standard settings. Press OK The "New Internet Service" window should appear on the Psion screen. Edit Service 6.1. Type Name (internet service provider) 6.2. Connection type: Dial-Up 6.3. Type Phone Number 7. Select Done 8. Select OK from "Internet Service Settings". Now you should be ready to start using the Web browser application. If you have already performed the configuration and you would like to edit the connection configuration select Edit instead of New in point number three in the list above. 1.3.1 Making a Dial-up Connection 1. From Extras select Web. If the web browser will not start and Psion tells you that something is wrong in the configuration, follow the instructions given to you on the screen. 2. Lower down on the Web window you will see where you should write the URL you want to visit. After you have written the URL press Enter on the keyboard. A pop-up window Connect to Internet should appear on the screen. 3. Check that the connection settings are correct. The modem is the one that uses the Nokia 8850 and check that the phone number is also correct.

4. Before pressing OK check that the Ir-link is active in your Nokia 8850. If the link is not active, activate it from the Nokia 8850. If the link is active press OK in the Psion. Psion should now be looking up the host address you have chosen. When you want to quit browsing choose File from the menu bar and from there Disconnect from the Network. After that you can close the Web browser (file close). 1.4 Psion 5 Comms (terminal) Connection Configuration When you are using only a terminal you will not need to download Message Suite. 1. Press system 2. Open menu tools remote link 3. Select off and press OK 4. Press Extras 5. Select Comms 6. Open menu tools communication settings 7. Select: Use comms port: infrared 8. Select OK. Now you should see "Online" in the right upper corner. 9. Activate the Ir-link from your Nokia 8850. 10. Type AT and press "Enter". TIP: If you key in the + character for the international prefix (press twice) in front of the country code, you will be able to use the same phone number when you are calling from abroad. TIP: QUICK SAVE : In the standby mode, key in the phone number and press Save. Key in the name and press OK.

Erasing a name and phone number
You can remove names and phone numbers from the selected phone book one by one or all at once.
Copying a name and phone number
You can copy names and phone numbers all at once or one by one from the phone to the SIM card, or vice versa. 1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Copy and press Select. 3. Select the copying direction, From phone to SIM card or vice versa, and press Select. 4. Scroll to One by one, or Copy all, and press Select.

Copying and printing from your phone
You can copy names and phone numbers from phone book on a compatible phone or PC running an appropriate application, or print them on a compatible printer. 1. Make sure that the other phone, the PC or the printer is set up to receive data via its IR port.
This function makes it easy to call the service numbers of your service provider. This function is displayed only if your service provider has saved service numbers on your SIM card. 1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Service nos and press Select. 3. Scroll to the desired service number and press to call the number.
3. Press (Detail and) Options, scroll to Send via IR to copy the phone number and name to another phone or PC, or Print via IR to print the name and phone number on a compatible printer. 4. Press Select.

Voice dialling feature

The voice dialling feature allows you to make phone calls by saying a voice tag that has been added to a desired name and phone number. Any spoken word, for example a name, can be a voice tag. Before using voice dialling, note that: Voice tags are not language dependent. They are dependent on the speakers voice. The voice tags are sensitive to the background noise. Record them and make calls in a quiet environment. When recording a voice tag or making a call, hold the phone in the normal position close to your ear. The phone must be in a service area with adequate cellular signal strength. The maximum length for the voice tag recording is 1.5 seconds, but very short names are not accepted. You can add up to eight voice tags in the phones memory.
Copying and printing via IR
Copying a name and phone number to your phone
Using the phones infrared (IR) port, you can copy names and phone numbers from a compatible phone. 1. Press Menu, scroll to Infrared (Menu 9) and press Select. Your phone is ready to receive data through its IR port. The user of the other phone can now send the name and phone number via Infrared. 2. Once the name and phone number have been copied to your phone, press Options and scroll to Show, Save or Discard, and press OK.
Service numbers (Service Nos)
2. Recall the name and phone number to be copied or printed.

NOTE: The phone must be in a service area with adequate cellular signal strength. Also, you must say the name exactly as you said it when you recorded it. This may be difficult in, for example, a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should not rely solely upon voice dialling in all circumstances.

Replaying a voice tag

1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Voice tags and press Select. 3. Scroll to the name (or phone number) you wish to replay and press Options. 4. Scroll to Playback and press OK.
Adding a voice tag to a phone book entry
Save or copy the names and phone numbers , to which you want to add a voice tag, in your phones memory. Voice tags can also be added to names and phone numbers on your SIM card, but the voice tags may be erased if you remove your SIM card to another phone or use another SIM card in your phone. 1. In the standby mode, press Names to access the phone book and select Search. 2. Scroll to the name and phone number to which you want to add a voice tag and press (Detail and)Options. 3. Scroll to Add voice tag and press Select. Press Start, then speak after tone is displayed. 4. Press Start. The phone sounds a notification tone and Please speak now is displayed. 5. Say clearly the word(s) you want record as a voice tag. 6. The phone plays the recorded tag, and Playing voice tag is displayed. If you do not want to save the recording, press Quit. 7. When the voice tag has been successfully saved, Voice tag saved is displayed. The voice tag is saved in the phone books Voice tag list. 26

Making a call

1. In the standby mode, press and hold Names to activate the voice dialling. The phone sounds a notification tone and Please speak now is displayed. 2. Say the voice tag clearly. If no match for the voice tag is found or recognized, the phone may ask you to try again. Press Yes to activate Voice Dialling again, or Exit to return to standby mode. 3. The phone automatically dials the number of the recognized voice tag and Searching is displayed.

Changing voice tags

1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Voice tags and press Select. 3. Scroll to the name (or phone number) with a voice tag you want to change and press Options. 4. Scroll to Change and press OK. Press Start then speak after tone is displayed. 5. Press Start. The phone sounds a notification tone and Please speak now is displayed. 6. Say the word(s) you want to record as a new voice tag. The phone replays the new voice tag and confirms that this voice tag has been saved.

Erasing a voice tag

1. In the standby mode, press Names. 2. Scroll to Voice tags and press Select. 3. Scroll to the name (or phone number) you want to erase, and press Options. 4. Scroll to Erase and press OK. Erase voice tag? is displayed. 5. Press OK to erase the voice tag.

5. Using the Menu

The phone offers a range of functions that allow you to tailor the phone to your needs. These functions are arranged in menus and submenus. Most of the menu functions are provided with a brief help text. To view the help text, scroll to the desired menu function and wait for 15 seconds. The menus and submenus can be accessed by scrolling or by using the shortcuts.
Accessing a menu function by using its shortcut
The menu items (menus, submenus and setting options) are numbered and can be accessed quickly by using their shortcut number. The shortcut number is shown in the top right corner of the display. For menu shortcuts, see the list of menu functions. 1. In the standby mode, press Menu. 2. Within three seconds, key in the first digit of the shortcut number. Repeat this for each digit of the shortcut number.
Accessing a menu function by scrolling
1. In the standby mode, press Menu to access the menu facility. Scroll with or to reach the desired main menu, e.g. Settings. Press Select to enter the menu. 2. If the menu contains any submenus, for example Call Settings, find the one you want by scrolling with or. Press Select to enter the submenu. If the menu you have selected contains submenus, repeat this step. or to find the setting of 3. Scroll with your choice. Press OK to confirm the chosen setting. TIP: You can return to the previous menu level by pressing Back. TIP: You can exit the menu without changing the menu settings by pressing or by pressing and holding Back.

Press Menu and key in the digits 01. Then key in the rest of the digits of the desired shortcut number.

This function is available only if your SIM card supports it. The divert options that are not supported by your network operator may not be shown. This is a network service and may not be supported by your network. For availability, contact your network operator or service provider. In this menu you will see the names of the available services. This menu is shown only if it is supported by you SIM card. For details, contact your network operator or service provider.

Messages (Menu1)
Reading a text message (Inbox menu 1-1)
When you receive a text message, and the number of new messages followed by message(s) received will appear and a short tone will be heard. Press Read to view the message list immediately or Exit to view it later. To view the message list later 1. In the Messages menu, scroll to Inbox, and press Select. 2. Scroll to the desired message and press Read to read it. Use or to browse through the message and related information, such as Senders phone number and Reception date and time. 3. While reading the message, press Options to access one of the following options and press OK to activate it: Erase to delete the message. Reply to reply to the message. Edit to change the contents of the message. Use number to extract a phone number from the message for calling or saving it in the phone book. Forward to send the message onwards. Print via IR to print the message on a compatible printer through the phones Infrared port. Details to show details of the message: senders name or phone number, the message centre used for sending, reception date and time, reply path availability. in front of the header means that NOTE: the message has not yet been read. in front of the header indicates a delivery report. When flashes your phone has no more space for new messages. Erase some of the existing messages.
Viewing your own messages (Outbox menu 1-2)
You can save your own messages in this menu. 1. Once you are in the Messages menu, scroll to Outbox and press Select. 2. Scroll to the desired message and press Read to view it. 3. Pressing Options while you are reading a message allows you to access the same functions as Inbox (Menu 1-1), except for Reply and Details. 4. If you wish to send the saved message, use the Forward option.

Writing compound words

1. Key in the first part of the word and accept it by pressing. 2. Write the last part of the compound word and accept the word by pressing or.
Feature available in certain versions/markets only. The ability to receive or send text message is network dependent. Check with your operator.
The following input methods may be available when Chinese is set as the display text language:

When you key in characters by pressing number keys (as described later in this section), the phone automatically displays a list of candidate Chinese characters in the box on the right side of the display. The number of candidate characters varies, but only three characters together are shown on the display. Scroll to the desired character and press Select to select it. Chinese input display
Inputting punctuation marks
When the cursor is on the text message line, you can add punctuation marks or special characters. Press to display the list of them, scroll to the desired character and press Use to select it. Press for space.
Using Pinyin input method
Make sure you have selected Simplified Chinese under Settings Menu 4-5-1. You can key in letters by pressing the corresponding number key for the letter once or more times. Then scroll to the desired character and press Select. Press once for the first tone mark, twice for the second etc.

Shows number of characters that can still be written. Tip: If you make a mistake, you can delete characters to the left of cursor by pressing Clear as many times as needed. Press and hold Clear to delete all the characters keyed in. Tip: Keying in more symbols and strokes in Stroke input method for Traditional or Simplified Chinese, and adding tone marks in Pinyin and Zhuyin input methods, shortens the candidate character list.
Example of Pinyin input To write Pin: Press once, three times, twice, and once for tone mark. If needed, scroll to the desired character to highlight it and press Select. Note: The Pinyin method automatically knows the next legal pinyin element and one press will be enough. For example, if we were to input "Pin" press "7" once and "4" once to get "i". The characters "8" and "h" are not allowed. Press "6" once only.

When you receive a picture message
To view the message immediately: Press View. While reading a message, you can save it by pressing Save. To view the message later in this menu: First press Exit and then OK to save the message. NOTE: If there is no space to save a new message, you first need to select one of the old messages and replace it with the new one.
Sending a picture message
1. In the Picture messages menu, select one of the preset pictures and press View. 2. If the displayed picture is the one you want, press Options, scroll to Edit text and press Select. If the displayed picture is not the one you want, press Back and repeat step 1. 3. Write the message. To view the whole message before sending it, press Options, scroll to Preview and press OK.
The total number of sets depends on how many sets your SIM card offers.

Common (Menu 1-5-2)1
Delivery reports You can request the network to send delivery reports about your text messages (network service). Reply via same centre You can request the network to route the reply to your text message via your own message centre (network service).
2. Scroll to Fax and data or Also voice and press OK. Also voice allows you to switch from voice mode to data (or fax) mode during a call. 3. Key in or recall the desired phone number and press OK. 4. If you selected Also voice in step 1, to switch between voice and data/fax mode during a call, press Options, select Voice Mode or Data Mode (or Fax Mode) and press OK. 5. After the transmission, end the call by pressing.

Info service (Menu 1-6)

This network service allows you to receive messages about a variety of topics (such as weather or traffic conditions) from your service provider. For available topics and relevant topic numbers, contact your service provider. By selecting On, you will receive messages about the active topics. Topic Index retrieves a list of available topics from the network. In Topics, you can add a topic to the topics list. You can also Edit or Erase the topics list, or Select to mark the topics as active or inactive. Select Language to set the language for the messages. Only messages in the selected language will be shown.
Receiving a data or fax call
You can answer a data or fax call in the normal way, even when the phone keypad is locked.
Calling fax or data mailbox
You can call your fax and data mailbox by using the menus Fax mailbox and Data mailbox which are available if you subscribed to the corresponding network services. In menu 5 Call divert your fax and data calls to these mailboxes.

Alternatively, press Options, scroll to the desired function, and press OK. 4. Enter the second number. Repeat these steps as many times as necessary. Press Clear to erase any mistakes. 5. Press Options. Highlight Equals and press OK. 47

Calculator (Menu 7)

Make note to write a note. You can choose from the following types of note Reminder is indicated by. Key in the note and the date and press OK. Call is indicated by. Key in the desired phone number, or recall it from phone book, and the date when the call should be made, press OK. Repeat this to set the time at which the call should be made. Meeting is indicated by.Key in a note and the date of meeting, press OK. Repeat this to set the time of the meeting. Birthday is indicated by. Key in the persons name, the date of birth (include the year) and press OK. The note and the persons age will be shown in every coming year. NOTE: You can set the phone to sound a tone in anticipation for a note. At the prompt Set alarm for the note?, press Yes, key in the alarm date and press OK. Repeat this with the alarm time. The presence of a tone alert is indicated by when you view the notes. Erase notes to delete the selected note(s). Scroll to one of the displayed options, Of chosen day, One by one or All at once and press OK. View all notes to view the notes that are set for all days. Scroll through the note(s). Pressing Options allows access to the same functions as in View day. Scroll to the desired function and press OK. Go to date to go to the desired date. Set the date to change the current date. Print via IR to print all the notes on a compatible printer using the phones infrared port.

Infrared (Menu 9)

In this menu you can set up your phone to receive data through its infrared (IR) port. To use an IR connection, the device with which you want to establish a connection must be IrDA compliant. The phone is a Class 1 Laser Product.
Setting the devices ready for infrared connection
The preferable distance between the two devices in infrared connection is up to 60 cm. There must be no obstructions between the two communicating devices. The IR ports of the two devices must point at each other.
Receiving data via the IR port
To receive data from another compatible phone: 1. Ensure that the two phones are ready for the IR connection. 2. Select the Infrared menu to activate the IR port for data reception. 3. The user of the sending phone selects the desired IR function to start data transfer. If data transfer is not started within 45 seconds after the activation of the IR port, the connection is cancelled and will have to be started again.

If certain features are in use (Keypad lock, Fixed Dialling, etc.), you may first need to turn those features off before you can make an emergency call. Consult this document and your local cellular service provider. When making an emergency call, remember to give all the necessary information as accurately as possible. Remember that your wireless phone may be the only means of communication at the scene of an accident do not cut off the call until given permission to do so.
Important User Information
This section explains how to deactivate the EFR CODEC should you find that it is difficult to make or receive calls when travelling and roaming onto another network. Please note that there is no indication on the phone as to whether or not the EFR codec is activated or deactivated.

The Nokia 8850 (GSM) come equipped the latest codec and audio technology for superior sound and voice quality. Currently, there are three different codecs defined for GSM:

With the display clear perform the following key press sequence : *3370# or *EFRO# i.e. Press the "*", key, then the `'3'` key and so on.
full-rate (FR) enhanced full-rate (EFR) half-rate (HR)
The Nokia 8850 phone can support all these codecs. The FR codec is supported by all GSM cellular networks and phones. The network automatically selects which codec is used, FR or EFR (if supported by the network). The Nokia phone supplied within this sales package has the EFR codec activated to so that you can automatically enjoy the benefits of EFR if supported by your network operator. Currently only some networks support the EFR codec in addition to the FR codec.

Notes to a) and b)

i) Immediately after pressing *3370# (or #3370#) the phone will automatically power itself off and then on again - this is NORMAL and also serves to indicate that deactivation (or activation) has occurred. During the automatic power off/on sequence the LCD display will become clear. the back lights will switch off and then the display will come back on. ii) If during activation/deactivation the wrong key is pressed, clear the wrong entry by pressing the right selection key labeled ''CLEAR`` iii) If at any time you choose to quit the process then press the END key (the red key above the 3 key) OR the selection key labeled '`CLEAR`` until all entered numbers are cleared.
