About Nero Express
Nero Express provides all the performance and efficiency of Nero Burning ROM with a simplified user interface. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Nero Express guides you quickly and easily through your desired burning tasks. The default settings are selected to automatically produce the best possible results. Using the program is remarkably easy: simply select the project to be burned, add the files, and start burning. It is just as easy to create Nero Express discs with SecurDisc and a SecurDisc supported drive. SecurDisc is a new hardware and software technology developed by Nero and HLDS with which you can create discs with special protection properties, such as data integrity, reconstructability, encryption and duplication protection. Such discs can be created with SecurDisc supported drives (e.g. from HLDS/LG and Nero Express) and read from any drive with InCD or InCD Reader.
Working with Nero Express
Basically, the user interface of Nero Express consists of the selection of a compilation method in the start screen. You then complete the task by navigating through the different steps where a separate window is displayed for each individual step. This generally requires four steps: Choose compilation type Select what you would like to do by moving the cursor over the menu item and clicking one of the tasks displayed. This manual contains a chapter for each task that describes all of the steps required for its completion. Completing a task Depending on the task, you will have to go through various steps until you reach the end. Each individual step consists of a new screen. For each screen, the manual contains a chapter in which all areas are described in detail. Burning a Compilation Burning marks the end. To do this, set the burn parameters and click the Burn button. Depending on the type of the task you are working on and the recorder connected to the system, a number of different entries are available for selection. Options after burning After burning is complete, you can decide what to do next: select the option to continue working with Nero Express or exit the program.

Copying CDs/DVDs
12.1 Copying methods
Nero Express can be used for copying discs. There are two methods for this:
On-the-fly Copy Over Image
Each method has advantages and disadvantages which will depend on your requirements.
12.1.1 On-the-fly
When using the on-the-fly method, insert the original disc into a drive and a recordable disc into the drive. The original disc in the drive is copied immediately without any time delay to the blank disc in the recorder. The on-the-fly method allows you to copy discs very quickly, and does not require any additional space on the disc. In order to be able to use the on-the-fly method, you will need at least two drives: one for reading the disc and a disc burner for writing. The following requirements apply to the read drive and disc burner:
The disc burner must feature buffer underrun protection, or the drive must be capable of delivering the data sufficiently quickly. The read speed should be at least twice as fast as the write speed. The read drive must be capable of delivering information on the number and type of sessions, otherwise Nero Express may not be able to produce an exact copy.
If you want to copy Audio CDs, we recommend the copy image method because the quality of the read audio files can suffer depending on the drive.
12.1.2 Copy image
With the copy over image method, an image of the original disc is saved to a file first. The image file is then burned to a blank disc. Copying using copy over image takes longer, but it often produces better results. You must have sufficient storage space to use the copy over image method. The copy over image method is particularly suitable in the following situations:
Only one drive is available. You would like to make several copies of the same disc. You think it likely that read errors may have occurred on the source CD (for example because it is scratched). You attach importance to the best possible reproduction (particularly in relation to index positions and the quality of Audio CDs).
12.2 Copying CDs/DVDs
To copy a disc, proceed as follows: If you are not in possession of the copyright for the relevant CD/DVD and do not have authorization from the owner of the copyright, unauthorized copying of CDs violates national and international legislation. Copy-protected Audio CDs cannot be copied using Nero Express.
Some CDs/DVDs are copy-protected and cannot be copied. If you are not sure whether your CD/DVD can be copied, activate simulation before commencing the actual physical burn process.
The corresponding copy options appear.
2. Click the option you require, Copy Entire CD or Copy Entire DVD.
The Select source and destination screen appears.
3. Make the desired settings in this screen and, if required, in the extended area of the window. 4. If you want to use the Copy Image method, e.g. because you have only one drive:
1. Disable the On-the-fly check box. 2. Insert the disc that you want to copy into the recorder.
5. Click the Copy button.
If you are copying via the drive, the copy process starts. If you are using Nero Image Recorder, the Save Image File dialog box opens:
6. Enter a name for your image file in the File Name input field. 7. Select the relevant storage location in the Save to navigation tree and click the Save button.
The copy and/or save process starts. You can follow the process status in the status bar.
If you are using a single drive for copying, you will be prompted to remove the source CD/DVD and to insert a suitable blank disc after the image file has been written. The burn process then starts automatically.

8. Click the Next button.
You have successfully copied a CD/DVD and can now continue by selecting another option from the final screen or by closing Nero Express. See also: Final screen 61

Surface Scan checks the quality of each sector and shows the results in a graph.
Nero DriveSpeed
Nero DriveSpeed is an Nero AG utility, which will set the reading speed of a CDROM/DVD drive. When you are running this utility for the first time, this window will appear. You can detect all the support speeds of your recorder by clicking on the Detect button and the information will appear to the left.
You can remove certain supported speeds if you feel they are not needed by clicking on the Remove button. In addition, you can select the language of your choice by going to the Language box and choosing your preferred language. After your speed selection and language has been made, you can view the read speed and spin down time of your recorder.
Getting Started 24
Run at startup You can select to run Nero Drive Speed when you turn on your computer. Start minimized You can have Nero Drive Speed start when you turn on your computer but minimized in the background so it will not disturb your work. Restore speed settings at startup You can return to default speed settings once you restart your computer. The ability for limiting the reading speed of a CD-ROM drive is a must have feature for high speed drives. Although a high speed drive allows you to transfer data in less time, there are some disadvantages of using such a drive A drive faster than 24x can be very noisy which is not surprising as the spindle speed can be as high as 12000 RPM which is much faster than for example a hard disk. If the drive only needs to access the CD for a short period of time, for example software installation, then this is not such a big problem. But it can get irritating when you're using the drive to play MP3 files. In many cases the noise from the drive is louder than the sound from the audio file. The data rate of a MP3 file is usually about 16 KB/sec (@128 kbps) which equals to approximately 0.1X! So a reading speed of 4X is more then adequate for playing MP3's. You can also use Nero DriveSpeed to increase the DAE speed with some drives. Asus drives for example set the default DAE speed to 8X while these drives are actually capable of DAE at up to 20X or even higher! Speed set after a disc is inserted (Auto Insert Notification must be enabled) This has been implemented because many drives lose their speed setting when a new disc is inserted. Bug fix: speed settings not saved on some configurations Other small bug fixes/improvements
Getting Started 25

Music 55
More Music on your media: Offering 128 kbps (kilo bits per second) performance at a 64 kbps encoding rate, mp3PRO doubles the digital music capacity of flash memory and of compact discs. For example, traditional audio CDs hold about 15 songs, and an mp3 CD can hold 150 or more songs encoded at 128 kbps. In the near future, when mp3 CD players incorporate the mp3PRO decoder, consumers will be able to store over 300 songs on an mp3PRO encoded Compact Disc. Sound Quality: The fact is, mp3PRO provides superior sound quality at lower bit rates than traditional mp3. You simply have to experience the difference yourself. Download the new demo version of Nero which includes a 30 times demo version for the mp3PRO encoder. If you already own the version 5.5.4.0 or higher of Nero (not the demo version), then add UNLIMITED mp3PRO AND MP3 Encoding support with the "Nero mp3PRO encoder Plug-in". If you own an older version of Nero (below 5.5.4.0) you are still able to order the MP3-Encoder (without "PRO"). The demo and update version of Nero 5.5.4.0 (and future updates) includes a 30 times trial version of the mp3PRO encoder for you to enjoy. After youve tested the encoder 30 times you can decide if you want to buy the unlimited mp3PRO encoder plug-in. The encoder will let you make both standard mp3s as well as enhanced mp3PRO files! If you already own the version 5.0.0.0 or higher (including Nero 5.5) of Nero (not the demo version), then add UNLIMITED MP3 Encoding support with the "Nero MP3 encoder Plug-in". This encoder (without "PRO") cannot be upgraded later to mp3PRO.

10.5 LightScribe FAQs
What is LightScribe? LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling is a new process for labeling CDs and DVDs. It enables private and commercial users to easily achieve professional results in silk-screen printing quality. First of all, the data are burned on the blank disc by laser as normal. The medium is then turned over and placed in the burner drawer again. Using the same laser as for burning the data, a precise, iridescent label is then produced, which can consist of any text and graphic elements. So you no longer need to use a printer, permanent marker or self-adhesive disc labels. How are LightScribe discs detected? LightScribe labels can only be printed on discs having a special surface and which have been specially made for this purpose. On insertion, LightScribe checks whether the identification for LightScribe discs is present in the center of the disc. If the disc is not detected, please go through the following steps: a. Check whether you have inserted a LightScribe disc. b. Check if the LightScribe disc is sitting correctly in the recorder with the label side facing down. c. Clean the center of the disc with a lint-free cloth to remove any dirt or smears. d. Place another LightScribe disc in the recorder if the problem has still not been cleared. How good is the print quality? LightScribe offers three different levels of quality: Draft, normal and best. With each level of quality there is an improvement in the contrast of image and text, though the time to print increases. How fast can a LightScribe label be printed? The time to print a LightScribe label depends on a number of factors: the amount of data to be printed, the position of the data on the label, the selected print quality and the disc used. When printing labels, the LightScribe recorder burns the image and text in concentric rings from the inner diameter to the outer diameter. Rings with no data are skipped. The thickness of the rings determines the contrast and hence the print quality. What labels can I print? Basically, there are three different label print modes: Title: Only the name of the disc or compilation appears on the disc. This labeling method allows the disc to be identified.
When data is written to the CD more than once. After you have written your first session to the CD, you can then add/write additional information with a different data set.
Glossary 156
MP3 Files (with the extension of.MP3)
The MP3 audio format has established itself as the most frequently used format to transfer audio data via the internet. MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. Using MP3, audio files can be reduced (or compressed) to a fraction of their orginal size (factor 1:10), without diminishing the quality.
An Acronym for Motion Picture Experts Group, it is a standard that was created for highly compressed video such as SVCD and Video CD.
MPEG-1
Which is a part of the MPEG compression family has the highest compression rate.
MPEG-2
There are very little differences between MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 with the exception that MPEG-2 works better with televisions that are interlaced and is the broadcast standard.
MPEG-3
This standard was created to define High Definition T.V.
MPEG-4
This standard is the next generation of MPEG-2 and is currently still in development.
Master
After the creation of an image file, the actual process of CD production occurs. If the CD is to be used for reproduction purposes, it is known as a master.
Mixed Mode-CD
Music and computer data are stored on one CD with this type of CD. The computer data is generally located on track 1 and audio data is located in the ensuing tracks.
Multi-Session-CD
A CD which is written in several sequential sessions is known as a multi-session CD.
NTSC is the standard for video and television in the United States and Japan. Other parts of the world have another standard. NTSC has more frames per second than PAL however. NTSC has less horizontal lines than PAL.
Glossary 157
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. A product that states it is OEM means that it was made by one company, for another company, to sell as its own.
Glossary 158
On-The-Fly
A process for burning data onto a CD-R. There are two different methods of doing this. With the classical and older method, all of the data which is to be recorded onto the CD is first stored in a buffer in a large file known as an image file. From there, it is copied or burned onto the CD-R. In contrast to this, the method known as On-The-Fly transfers the data directly from their original memory locations on a hard drive onto the CD-R. With Nero, a so-called compilation is used for this purpose. This is a small file which only crossreferences the data to be transferred.
Orange Book
The standard in which the CD-MO (Magneto-Optical) and CD-WO (Write Once) technologies are defined. It provides the basis for CD-R.
PAL is the standard video and television in Europe. PAL has more horizontal lines than NTSC however, PAL has less frames per second than NTSC.
Photo-CD
A CD which is used for storing images, photos, slides and other visual data. The Photo-CD is generally capable of multi-sessions. The standard originates from Kodak and Philips.
Plugin
A plugin is a software file that allows one to have or use extra features with their software or to help fix an issue.
Premastering
The preparation of data which is to be written onto a CD at some later time. An image, which represents an exact replica of the data and the directory structure, is usually created first.
Red Book
This standard describes the CD-DA.
An old outdated data structure standard which was created by Adaptec to support filenames up to 128 characters long including spaces. Files used with the Romeo standard can only be read under Windows 95 and NT operating systems. Unicode characters are not supported, however, they can be read on the Macintosh systems provided that the characters do not exceed 31 characters.
Scan Rate
This is the indication of the frequency with which analog signals are converted into digital characters.
Glossary 159
Small Computer System Interface. SCSI is a modern bus system to which different terminal devices such as an SCSI hard drive, streamers or a CDrecorder may be connected. At this time, SCSI is the only possibility of operating a CD-recorder on a typically-used computer system.
Sector
A sector is the smallest addressable information unit of a CD. It is composed of 2352 bytes of which - depending on the type of CD used - differing amounts are available as user data. A sector generally consists of a header, synchronization bits and user data. It may also have error recognition and correction data. To read a sector, a drive with simple reading speed requires 1/75th of a second.
Session
When data is written onto a disc, this is called a session. A session is marked at the start and at the end. You can write onto a disc and complete it in a single session. If more than one session is recorded on a disc, then this is known as a multi-session disc.
Session-At-Once
The session-at-once method is mainly used for CD-Extra. With the session-atonce recording type, a first session with several audio tracks is recorded in one operation. The latter is then switched off but the CD is not closed (meaning you are still able to write additional data to it). A second (data) session is then written and then the disc is closed.
WAV/Wave File (with the extension.wav on your computer)
Audio files are saved on the hard disk in the wave format. The wave format is part of the general RIFF Standard (Resource Interchange File Format). This format supports various scanning rates and depths. This is the PC format for saving audio files on the hard drive (Mac's use AIFF files). Audio files that are on a commercial CD (store bought CD), are in digital form. When saving your sound/audio that originates from a CD-ROM onto your hard drive, it must be saved in analog form. Audio files cannot be saved in digital form on the hard drive.
White Book
The format created by Sony, Philips, and JVC in 1993 that extended the Red Book CD format to include digital video in MPEG-1 format which is referred to as Video CD.
