PhotoImpact 11 By John C. Lee PhotoImpact 11 is the latest release of the image editing and web design software by Ulead Systems, Inc. Ulead Systems has incorporated in this version a number of powerful new features as well some enhancements of the existing photo-editing tools. Among them is the new userfriendly interface called My Workspace. It gives the user the option of choosing any of the five modes of workspace. Basic Photo Mode helps new users to perform common photo editing tasks with condensed tool sets and large type icons. More experienced users can choose any of the more complete interface systems including Standard Photo Modes, Advanced Photo Mode and the two other task-related Graphics and Web Modes. My Workspace also allows you to customize the workspace. You can insert additional command buttons on the standard tool-bar or remove unwanted buttons from it. You can also choose which panels, tool-sets or EasyPalette galleries you wish to show in the workspace. Uleads PhotoImpact applications are known to have intuitive and easy-to-use Selection and Object tools. In PhotoImpact 11, Ulead went a step further by introducing a powerful new feature, the Object Extraction Wizard. It is usually a tedious job to extract irregularly shaped objects from base images using the Lasso selection tool. With the Object Extraction Wizard, you just brush paint around the boundary of the subject, and extract it as an alpha-channel (with transparent background) object. You can then refine the extracted object using the eraser tool to remove unwanted areas, or using the brush tool to recover parts of the original image. However, the wizard provides only circular pattern brushes, which I have found rather hard to work with in tight areas. Ulead has also improved the Lasso tool. The Smart Lasso tool utilizes Detection Scope to obtain a more accurate selection. Digital camera sensors, unlike the human eye, can only capture a limited dynamic range of light when photographing under extreme bright or dark conditions. A picture taken under a bright sky usually loses details in the dark areas, while when taken against shade areas results in washed out highlight. To circumvent this limitation, most high-end cameras provide a Bracketing feature, which takes 3 shots of different exposures with one camera click. These multiple shots can be processed into a single image with extended tonal range using the PhotoImpacts HDR (High Dynamic Range) tool. In PhotoImpact 11, Ulead came up with a new SmartCurves feature. It uses the cameras exposure curve instead of the multiple-exposure shots to adjust the dynamic range of the picture. I have tried the SmartCurves on a number of pictures taken under extreme light conditions, and found that the correction was overly compensated. I had to readjust it by reducing the overall image brightness. PhotoImpact 11 now supports the processing of RAW image data from popular digital camera formats. It lets you adjust characteristics of your RAW photos such as white balance, exposure, and color and luminance noise. You can convert the images to either 24- or 48-bit (16-bit per color channel) color depth. 48-bit color depth is a new feature incorporated in PhotoImpact 11. It allows you to work with over 280 trillion colors, tones and shades in your images instead of 16 million colors with 24-bit color depth. More colors give smoother gradations between colors and a higher level of detail in your image. You can use almost all the available editing tools for 48-bit images as used for 24-bit images. PhotoImpact 11 supports DNG (Digital Negative) format for RAW files. Different camera manufacturers use different RAW file formats. Hence not every RAW file can be read by a variety of software applications. DNG, an archival format for RAW files, is developed by Adobe Systems for the purpose of addressing the lack of an open standard for the RAW files created by individual camera models.
Ulead has greatly expanded the collections in EasyPalette and Component Designer to include preset and customizable templates for DVD menus and labels and Lower third graphics that can be exported to other video or image authoring or editing applications. PhotoImpact 11 offers other new features. You can use the White Balance feature to adjust color temperature and tint to suit the mood of the image. You can use the Chromatic Aberration tool to clean up chromatic aberration and "purple fringing" in images taken with some of today' highs resolution, small-sized sensors. Add Vignette is another addition that creates soft-edge oval frames to make your portraits stand out. With this "spotlight" effect, you can draw viewers' eyes to your subject and reduce distracting background elements. You can use the Save for Mobile Easily function to save image files for display on mobile devices such as your cellular phone and PDA. Ulead has added several new JavaScript effects to PhotoImpact 11s dynamic creator of web page designs, such as cascading menus, rollovers and scrolling text. For easy e-mail sharing, PhotoImpact 11 automatically optimizes the sizes of images and exports them as attachments to your e-mail program. As in previous versions, the PhotoImpact 11 package comes bundled with a bonus CD containing programs including Photo Explorer 8.6, PhotoImpact Album 11, Ulead COOL 360, Ulead GIF Animator 5, Hemera Photo Objects, Alien Skin and a 4-chapter Audio-Video Tutorial. It also comes with a printed 323-page Users Manual. The comprehensive manual covers all the topics you would like to learn about the program. However, I find the Index section of the manual is not as well organized. You cannot even find RAW file format shown anywhere in the manuals Index. The on-line help is a duplicate copy of the printed manual. I find that it is very inconvenient to get help on-line quickly. None of the dialog boxes has a Help button that links to the pertinent topic in the on-line manual. I have to search through the manual to find out what the various items on the dialog box are about. PhotoImpact 11 is excellent image editing and web design software. It offers abundant editing tools and programs and a large-collection EasyPalette with virtually thousands of images, templates, photo effects, masks, frames, DVD menus and labels. The most noticeable shortcoming that I find is its slow processing speed. It takes almost twice as long to load PhotoImpact 11 as the competitor application Corel Paint Shop Pro X. I also noticed that processing some of the auto functions is unusually slow.
