Choosing a new kitchen for your home is an exciting prospect and one that takes planning and budgeting. When we asked you to rate your kitchen supplier, John Lewis came top, with a five-star customer service rating and an overall customer score of 85%. Ikea, which is unmatched for value for money, came a close second with 84%. Moben, however, came bottom of our kitchen brands league table (below), with a customer score of just 46%. Avoiding the hassle

When it comes to buying a new kitchen, customer service is the main factor in achieving a high customer score, more so than value for money, finish and quality. The table (below left) shows the results for eight kitchen brands and independent kitchen and DIY (non-kitchen specialist) companies, as well as installation scores for five companies.

The worst brands

Moben is the worst kitchen brand with a customer score of just 46% and the only brand with a poor value-for-money rating. One customer told us: Dealing with Moben was the worst experience Ive ever had with any company about anything. We felt let down countless times. B&Q came bottom for installation, scoring 40%. B&Q customers were significantly more likely to have to wait two months or more for their kitchen installation. units A costly bespoke kitchen gives flexibility for pieces to match your specification, but cheaper units work just as well provided theyre installed properly. More expensive units tend to be made from thicker wood and arrive pre-assembled (and glued together), making very strong and rigid units. In some instances, cheaper carcasses can be cut
with a lesser degree of accuracy and lead to poor and misaligned assembly. However, provided that carcasses are fitted correctly and the correct shelf fixings are used, then both types will be sturdy and take the same weight on shelves. Its important to check that 800 and 1,000mm units have a centre supporting shelf bracket as these widths of shelf can tend to bow.

Doors & Drawers Spending more on doors and drawers can improve the overall look of your kitchen. Doors can cost more than 100 each, but you can buy one for as little as 10. Some cheaper door fronts are covered with a printed paper film, which can scratch and damage easily. Cheaper wood-finish doors are often just a veneer, while a betterwww.which.co.uk
quality door is coated in a thicker surface layer, making it more durable. Youll get a wider choice of door, such as high gloss or solid wood, if you spend a bit more. Upgrading to soft-close doors and drawers makes a marked difference when using your kitchen. Soft-close drawers are designed for years of use with hard-wearing mechanisms. The
cheaper basic drawer runners can be clunky but will do the job. Worktops Prices vary from 50 to more than 500 for the same length of worktop, depending on the finish and material. Laminate is cheapest and is long lasting and durable, but not the best quality. Solid surface worktops have a thicker surface layer, which can be
sanded and buffed, so joins are smooth giving a better finish. The more expensive solid wood or granite will give a beautiful finish that should last a lifetime with proper care. Wood worktops can warp if poorly stored, so check thoroughly before installation. Quartz worktops are similar in appearance to granite, but are more durable and even stronger.

Spend time planning your new kitchen. Leave a note pad or two around the house to jot ideas down when you think of them, from essential features to gadgets youd like to consider. Think about the layout and where you want appliances and units to sit for example, where do you need more worktop space?
This will help ensure none of your daily needs can get overlooked in the planning process. Before committing to a company, get three quotes if youre not happy with them, get more quotes. When choosing a kitchen fitter use recommendations from previous customers. Which?

Check what services your kitchen fitter will provide, such as plumbing, gas and electrical installation, and whether there are additional costs for these.
If the company you bought from is installing as well, check wholl be fitting it, as many companies sub-contract to third parties. Find out who to contact if any problems or delays arise. Ask the fitter to provide you with a work schedule so you know what is happening daily, and which trades or deliveries to expect and when.

Ask where the installer plans to prep and cut all the materials will they need to use space in your home, garden or garage? Find out if youll still be able to use your kitchen sink during the installation process if not, ask how long this will be for and check to see if youll have access to a temporary sink instead.
