Connecting the NMEA Output from a 300 Series Unit to another NMEA Device
Only the 161 Combo, 363 Combo and 383c Combo models have an internal GPS receiver at this time and therefore will be the only 300 Series units that this will work for. Also, the software was changed to allow for a valid NMEA Output from these units, so your 300 Series unit will need to have version 3.210 software or higher. The 300 Series units output the following NMEA 0183 version 2.2 protocol sentences: GLL, GGA, RMC, VTG, ZDA, APB, BWR, RMB, DPT, MTW at a Baud Rate of 4800. The 300 Series units only support an NMEA Output of position, speed, bearing, and time of day information. Cartography, waypoints, routes, and tracks are not transferred from the 300 Series unit. NMEA Inp ut to the 300 Series unit is not supported in any way. Currently there are no direct-connect cables that exist for connecting the NMEA Output from the internal GPS receiver of a 300 Series Combo unit to another NMEA capable device. However our Hand held GPS connection cable (part# ASHHGPS) may be used to connect to the NMEA Input cable of the other device. This involves splicing the two cables together. For purposes of this document I will use a 383c as the 300 Series unit and a DSC capable VHF Radio as the NMEA capable device. The 383c Combo unit will be transmitting the NMEA data. The DSC capable VHF Radio will be receiving the NMEA Output from the 383c Combo unit.

Since the NMEA Input cable for the DSC capable VHF Radio (or other NMEA device) can vary by model and manufacturer, we can only list the possible names for those connections and not the pin out or wire color.
When all connections have been completed; all wires should be insulated from each other and the whole splice sealed in such a way that moisture cannot damage it.
With the 383c Combo unit powered on, set the NMEA Output menu to the On setting. This menu is under the Setup Tab in the Main tabbed Menu System and is only available if the User Mode menu is set to Advanced.
When the internal GPS receiver in the 383c Combo unit has a position fix, it will transmit the NMEA data to the DSC capable VHF Radio.
