| I have always bought Canon cameras. I have never had nay problems with them. They are excellent quality. At first I had my heart set on the Nikon - Coolpix L110. Then right next to it was the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. | |

| I have used all of the Canon Ixus/powershot that Canon made and this is the best in my opinion. Very very light material, hard. I usually shoot with a DSLR, but I have had several small point-and-shoot cameras for casual/discrete use. I have had several point and shoot cameras and SLR cameras... I am an amateur photographer and shoot hundreds of photos every week. | |

Canon Ixus 130 Compact Digital Camera Review
The thinnest and smallest Ixus yet
As far as compact digital cameras are concerned, the general trend among the most important manufacturers of such devices is to make them as thin and as light as possible, while packing them with a very large number of functions and features that most amateur photographers will find to be attractive. And, to some extent, that's exactly what Canon did with its Ixus 130 compact digital camera, which was officially launched back in February 2010, a device that combines a very sleek and attractive look with a quite a few advanced shooting features, which will ensure that even those people with a relatively low amount of experience in the field of digital photography get the hang of it. As some of you might know, the Ixus range can be defined as Canon's lifestyle-oriented compact digital cameras, since the devices in this family have a more stylish design, complete with metallic bodies and ultra-thin form factors. In other words, they're just the thing to carry around in a small purse or jacket, and will surely draw other people's attention when taken out for some quick shots. However, given the fact that they target mostly people with relatively little expertise in the field of digital photography, who are more interested in obtaining acceptable end results for web use rather than art shots, the Ixus cameras provide fewer manual controls than their PowerShot counterparts, for example. That's also the case with the model we've tested, the Ixus 130, which is described by Canon as their thinnest Ixus to date, a title well deserved, as far as we're concerned, and that's because the device is very small and portable. Indeed, people who are used to DSLRs will find little use for the tiny Ixus, but its attractive design and flashy colors will surely draw quite a lot of amateurs. Oh, and one last thing, before we start talking about the design features of the Canon Ixus 130. This little device was one of the two official "Softpedia CeBIT 2010 cameras," meaning that it helped us quite a lot during our visit at the respective trade show. [[BREAK=Aesthetics and Design]] Overall design features As mentioned above, the external design represents one of the strongest selling points of the new Ixus 130 compact digital camera by Canon. The model we've tested had a bright, fiery orange color, but users can also opt for the other available versions, namely silver, black or pink. Regardless of the color of choice, we couldn't help but admire the finishing of the Ixus 130, the compact digicam featuring a nice, brushed metal body, combined with a couple of rubberized plastic inserts (black, in the case of the orange version) and a chrome shutter button. The quality of the materials is also quite good, the device providing a sense of style and elegance while in use. Plus, we've sort of admired the lack of glossy surfaces, which leads

to a very low amount of fingerprint "imprinting" on the camera. The placement and length of the hand strap are also pretty OK, so there's very little chance of one dropping the camera. The strap is also black, matching the inserts found all over the camera's body. Size and portability Since the Canon Ixus 130 is touted by the manufacturer as being the smallest and thinnest to date, it's no surprise that the thing measures just around 92.2 x 56.1 x 17.8mm and weighs roughly 133 grams. However, these are just numbers, so it's perhaps better to try a real-life approach in order to help you get a better picture. [IMG=37][IMG=38] To be perfectly honest, we were a bit shocked when taking the Ixus 130 out of its box. I mean, even we found it pretty difficult to believe just how small and lightweight this thing is, and we've seen plenty of small cameras over time. Despite its minute size, the Canon Ixus 130 can be easily used by people with large and smaller hands, although the latter might have a bit of trouble adjusting some of the settings (due to the smaller size of the buttons). As for the weight, this thing is as lightweight as most cell phones out there, so one shouldn't have too much trouble with it. [IMG=39][IMG=40][IMG=41] In terms of carrying this thing around, the truth is that possibilities are endless. We've put it in a backpack, jacket pocket, front and rear jeans pockets', a small lady's purse; it fit equally well in every single case, which means you shouldn't have any major problems. Controls Given the fact that the Canon Ixus 130 targets mostly people with a relatively limited experience in the field of digital photography, the company has decided to keep things simple as far as the digital camera's control options are concerned, so they've included only a few control buttons, found on the top side and the rear/right side of the camera. However, before moving on to the actual button placement and functions, we'll have to point out a tiny detail, which was perhaps one of our biggest disappointments about the Ixus 130: the lack of a touchscreen. Without a doubt, this is the touchscreen era, and launching a device that doesn't provide such a functionality (but which targets the lifestyle-conscious segment) seems at least odd. Practically, many of the other products the Ixus 130 goes against in this segment do pack a touchscreen, or at least dual controls (both a touchscreen and a couple of physical buttons on the side). Of course, some might claim that the addition of a touchscreen might have made this thing a bit thicker, or might have raised some control-related issues, but the truth of the matter is that most mainstream consumers would have probably found it quite useful. Anyway, moving back to the issue of controls, we'll have to point out that the most important buttons used for controlling the Ixus 130 are found on the top side, where, from left to right, we can see the power button, zoom rocker and shutter button. Plus, next to the power button, we'll notice the camera's built-in microphone, used actively while recording video. [IMG=30][IMG=31] While there's nothing particularly spectacular worth saying about these buttons and their functionality (we will detail some features later on in our review), we will mention the fact that spacing between them is quite good, meaning there's little chance of accidentally hitting

the shutter button when zooming in or out until you find that perfect distance. Also noteworthy is the fact that the shutter button is quite sensitive, just slightly pressing it triggering the camera to start auto-focusing (depending on the shooting mode of choice, naturally). You'll have to press all the way in order to get the shot, but that's a whole different story. Now that we're done with the buttons placed on the top side of the Ixus 130, it's time to move to the rest of the control options, aptly positioned on the rear/right side. Starting from top to bottom, we first come across the playback mode activation button, featuring a small green arrow, followed (in the same line) by the recording mode switch. As we've pointed out earlier, Canon has decided to keep things simple with the Ixus 130 model, and, for this reason, users can choose from just three available shooting modes: Full Auto, Manual and Video recording. Well, that Manual function is a little bit more complicated, but we'll detail this in due time. Anyway, moving back to this switch, we'll have to point out that it simply felt a little small, so it's likely that people with larger fingers might have a tougher time selecting the preferred option. Underneath these two buttons, we encounter a very, very familiar button combo, found in the case of most compact cameras out there, namely the wheel-shaped navigation system. On top of the wheel, we can see the evaluative metering button, followed by the flash control button to the right and the macro/portrait/landscape button to the left. On the bottom of the wheel, we can notice the Delete / Timer button, while at the center, there's a Func.Set button, whose purpose is, obviously, to select certain options while navigating through the menus. The good thing is that the dimensions of all the buttons from this control "wheel" are quite OK, meaning that one should not have any major problems pressing them, even while in a hurry. Last, but certainly not least, come the Disp and Menu buttons. While the latter is pretty much self-explanatory (used for accessing the menus and navigating through them), the former has the purpose of bringing up or removing the various visual indicators usually found on the screen (shooting mode, number of available shots, etc.). Connectivity options In terms of connectivity, the Canon Ixus 130 is on par with most of its direct competitors. Naturally, the basic connectivity interface is USB, found behind a small protective cap on the rear side of the camera, in the top/right corner. What's interesting to note here is that, due to the fact that it offers video-recording capabilities, the compact digital camera has also been fitted with a mini-HDMI connector, found behind the same small cap mentioned above. A/V output is also possible, via a USB/AV adaptor cable, included in the sales package. [IMG=32][IMG=33][IMG=34] Within the same connectivity options chapter, we'll include the tripod mount, found on the lower side of the compact digicam (it's funny that this standard-size mount is almost as wide as the camera itself), as well as the memory card slot. The most important detail worth pointing out here is that the camera supports high-capacity memory cards as well, namely: SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MMCplus, HC MMCplus.

[IMG=35][IMG=36] Similar to other Canon products, as well as numerous other digital camera models, the respective slot is also protected by a cap, this time found on the bottom side of the camera. The same cap doubles as a battery protector, which, much to our surprise, is extremely thin (while being capable of providing a relatively OK functioning life - nothing impressive, though). Display The last issue regarding the design of the Ixus 130 we'll tackle is that of the display. So, the camera comes equipped with a 2.7-inch (6.9 cm) PureColor II G LCD (TFT) display, featuring an approx. 230,000-dot resolution, which, by all accounts, can provide some pretty vivid, clear images in most situations, even while held in direct sunlight. As mentioned before, unfortunately, the display doesn't provide tactile support. However, it does manage to take care of its basic function, which is at least commendable, and also allows users to adjust the brightness level in order to match their preferences. Physical specs Dimensions (WxHxD) - 92.2 x 56.1 x 17.8mm; Weight - Approx. 133g (including battery/batteries and memory card); [[BREAK=Real Life Performance]] Working with the Canon Ixus 130 - general considerations and menu navigation If you're a complete noob and this is the first compact digital camera you've ever used, then it's very likely you'll get the hang of it quite rapidly. After all, initially, you'll use the Auto setting on most occasions, moving on to the Manual button when you become more curious about digital photography and you want to expand your boundaries. Anyway, after inserting the battery and switching on the device (in Auto mode), you'll be able to start taking photos right away using the camera's recommended settings for each situation. Navigating through the menus should also be a pretty easy task, but since there are two types of menus, we'll have to tackle them separately. So, first of all, there's what we like to call the quick menus, related directly to the photo/video shooting or playback processes. These are accessible by pressing the Func.Set button and are displayed on the sides of the screen, so that users will be able to notice directly what effects they should obtain after applying a certain function or feature. Some of the quick menu options are more or less useful (such as the ones employed for setting the size and compression of the image, since the large majority of users will go with the best - quality shots), but others are extremely important, especially those accessed in the manual mode, which offer quick and easy access to the white balance and ISO settings, but also to the metering mode, etc. One of the most interesting things worth pointing out here is that, while in manual mode, users will be able to easily opt for the "active shooting mode", or the mode that will automatically be activated when moving the switch to its middle position. We won't go into details regarding all of the available shooting modes here (you have them listed above), but one thing is clear: there are plenty to choose from. [IMG=75][IMG=76][IMG=77][IMG=78] The Menu button in the bottom/right corner of the Ixus 130 offers access to a different set of menus, related both to the photo shooting process and the overall functioning of the camera itself (in the latter category, we can include the LCD brightness, volume and sounds options, and so on). However, the options provided here are less likely to be used during the actual photo shooting process. [IMG=79][IMG=80][IMG=81][IMG=82] One of the things we really liked about the menu options provided by the compact digital camera from Canon is the fact that they're quite simple and easy to follow (most of them feature Yes/No type options, etc.). Additionally, the look of these menus is appealing, meaning that Canon has focused a little bit more on the actual design of the software they're using, rather than just the available functions. Photo shooting and image quality Since this is, after all, a digital camera, its photo shooting capabilities are (or at least should be) its main selling point. However, to be perfectly honest, we have some pretty mixed feelings on this subject, all things considered, and we do believe that talking about the
Page 7 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
quality of the photos taken with the Canon Ixus 130 is directly related to the user's degree of photographic mastery and their own expectations/uses for the respective photo. [IMG=44][IMG=45][IMG=46][IMG=47] So, if you're just looking for a very compact camera that will take relatively OK pictures in most situations, which will look at least decent after being uploaded to Facebook or Flickr, then the Ixus 130 is a very good solution. The camera offers good overall image color, with bright reds and greens, as well as a relative OK sharpness level, plus plenty of details. Also, if you resize the photo for web use and don't zoom it too much, you'll most likely not even notice the other image-related issues that might occur. [IMG=47][IMG=48][IMG=49][IMG=50] The full auto mode works quite well, since it analyzes the overall environment conditions and applies the best-suited settings (out of the 22 pre-set scene modes). Another thing that will probably get amateur photographers excited is the presence of all sorts of in-camera effects and filters. The trend of providing such features in compact digital cameras seems to become more and more popular with the manufacturers of such products (and users as well), so it was to be expected that Canon would also provide such a range of functions/features. [IMG=51][IMG=52][IMG=53][IMG=54] Anyway, those who want to experiment will be able to choose a wide array of color-modifying options, including here the already classic sepia and black and white features, but also to create some artistic shots with the Fish-eye and Miniature shooting modes. The latter is quite interesting, since it allows users to choose the focus area on the shot and the blurs on the top and bottom sides, actually creating some sort of miniature impression. The thing with this particular type of shot is that you'll have to prepare it quite carefully beforehand, because, otherwise, the results will probably be less than satisfactory (as a hint, the best idea is to find a position on top of the area that you want to capture within your shot). [IMG=55][IMG=56][IMG=57][IMG=58] There are plenty of other shooting modes one can fiddle with, and we won't list them all here, but we will bring up the subject of Wink Detection. Accessible via the Smart Shutter shoothing mode, the Wink Detection is designed to take a photo when you decide to wink at the camera, which is quite curious, since a person isn't exactly at their best when winking. Anyway, guess that photos taken this way will certainly generate quite a lot of laughs, so we might understand just why Canon decided to implement the feature into its device. Oh, and one more thing: this camera even sports an underwater shooting mode, but you'll have to fit it with a special protective case in order to use it for such purposes. [IMG=59][IMG=60][IMG=61][IMG=62] The Macro feature also works pretty well, and the camera offers a couple of built-in Flash modes and timers, all of which are directly related to the selected shooting mode and exposure (the camera sports quite an OK intelligent exposure system). Naturally, the auto mode offers the least possibilities of customization, while the Program function in Manual mode probably offers the most tweaking options, ranging from white balance to ISO. OK, we've seen some of the things that make the Ixus 130 interesting, now it's time to move to something a little less pleasant, namely those things we were not so crazy about in the case of Canon's compact digital camera. [IMG=63][IMG=64][IMG=71] So, first of all, we believe the that the 2-second start-up time of the Ixus 130 is a little slow, especially given the fact that this is a device meant to take quick snapshots of things going on around the user. OK, it's not that bad, but a little speed wouldn't have hurt anyone. Shutter lag is estimated at around 0.7 seconds, which is not exactly bad. [IMG=72][IMG=73][IMG=74] If you decide to shoot at higher ISO values (higher than ISO400, anyway), be warned: the
Page 8 Copyright (c) 2001-2011 Softpedia. All rights reserved. Softpedia and Softpedia logo are registered trademarks of SoftNews NET SRL.
results will not prove particularly good. In fact, as you increase the ISO, the image will become grainier and more prone to noise, especially when zooming. So you should really forget about large crops at ISO 1600, for example, and either settle for lower values or refrain from taking photos in low-lit environments without flash altogether. Photo samples In order to help you get a better idea of what to expect from the Canon Ixus 130, we've also enclosed a couple of photo samples in our review. The first are crops taken from photos at various ISO values, so that you'll be able to see for yourselves the differences that occur while pushing up the ISO. [IMG=104][IMG=105][IMG=106] [IMG=107][IMG=108][IMG=109] Next, we'll add a couple of photos taken in various situations (good/average/poor lighting conditions), as well as some that have been modified using the camera's built-in effects (the first three, to be precise). In order to access the full-size photos, which you can also download for further, closer inspection, just click on the thumbnail.
Video recording and video quality While taking photos is, quite obviously, the main function the Ixus 130 has to offer, the compact digital camera from Canon also offers users a video recording mode, similar to most other cameras from the same segment. However, while, in general, the photo shooting capabilities of the Ixus 130 are rather OK, things really go downhill in terms of video. [IMG=65][IMG=66][IMG=67] According to the official specs list, the Canon Ixus 130 can record videos at a 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution and 30fps (otherwise known as 720p resolution), the files being saved in MOV format. That's all fine and dandy, but in reality, things don't go so well, especially if you start using the zoom. [IMG=68][IMG=69][IMG=70] We've tested quite a few compact digital cameras up until now, and most of them, when shooting videos in good lighting conditions (sunny day, outside), produced some pretty OK results, even when we used the zoom button.
In the case of the Ixus 130, however, things were pretty different. Sure, when one simply records video without touching the zoom (which, by the way, is only optical in video recording mode, which might explain a bit the final results), the results are OK, especially if there's enough light outside. However, when one tries to zoom-in on an object, the image gets all grainy, noisy and filled with artifacts. And, mind us, that's in optimum recording conditions.

Given this situation, we were not really sure whether to attempt some indoor, low-light shooting. However, we did that, and the results. well, we won't comment further and let you see for yourselves.
Anyway, to sweeten things just a bit, we'll also add that users will be able to customize, to some extent, the video recording options, being able to choose some of the pre-set white balance values or to apply a couple of color effects. Photo and Video playback The Canon Ixus 130 provides plenty of interesting features in terms of photo and video playback. So, besides providing the already classic slideshow function (complete with various transition effects and adjustable image changing interval), the compact digicam also offers users the possibility of further adjusting the photos (basic trimming, resizing or red-eye correction functions). Plus, users can also connect the camera directly to a photo printer, the Ixus 130 offering plenty of settings and printing-related features. [IMG=85][IMG=86][IMG=87][IMG=88] [IMG=89][IMG=90][IMG=91][IMG=92] The camera also supports tagging and adding to a "favorites" category, plus a little something called "filtered playback" that applies a certain criterion or filter to the way in which photos are organized and displayed. [IMG=93][IMG=94][IMG=95][IMG=96] [IMG=97][IMG=98][IMG=99] Things are fairly similar in the case of video playback, apart from the fact that there will be less available options (can't print out a video unless doing it frame by frame), users being able to just add some favorites to their lists. Battery life Despite having such a slim battery pack, the Canon Ixus 130 offers a relatively OK functioning time, namely up to 230 photos or up to 6 hours of playback. Naturally, these values might vary depending on just how much one tinkers with the camera's settings and various adjustments, reviews the photos they have just taken, records and plays back video, etc. As mentioned before, we used the Canon Ixus 130 extensively during our coverage of the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany, and, during our stay at this event (five days and more than a hundred photos taken), we only had to recharge the camera's battery once. In other words, we were pretty satisfied with its overall performance, and we'll surely list the battery life as a plus. [[BREAK=Conclusions]] The Good - very small and lightweight, ultra-portable; - stylish and attractive exterior, metallic case; - numerous in-camera effects; - wide range of available shooting modes; - numerous photo/video playback options; - support for SDHC and SDXC memory cards;

- good overall image quality, mostly suitable for web use; - relatively good battery life; The Bad - no touchscreen display; - poor quality videos, especially when zooming-in and in low light; - noise makes an appearance at higher ISO values; - no digital zoom when recording video; Overall Impressions Without a doubt, the most powerful impression the Canon Ixus 130 compact digital camera leaves when taken out of the box is the visual one. Let's face it, this thing is small, thin, and quite good looking, especially if you've opted for one of more colorful versions (either orange or pink). The Ixus 130 is an entry-level digicam and, for this reason, we should give it some credit. Amateur photographers (and especially those who only take shots for uploading them to Facebook, Flickr or Picassa) will find the Canon compact digital camera quite enough for their needs, especially since the results in Auto mode are more than OK. Also, there are plenty of art filters and shooting modes, so even those people who like to experiment a bit should be satisfied. Naturally, if you start to dig deeper, you might encounter some issues (such as the high noise lever at high ISO values and the lack of digital zoom when recording video), but, then again, we must not forget that this device was never meant to be used by professional photographers, but mostly by those people looking for an elegant accessory that will draw some attention and also produce OK pictures without too much trouble. [IMG=100][IMG=101][IMG=102][IMG=103] Last but not least, we'll have to say that the average pricing of the Ixus 130 at various online retailers is a bit high, considering its overall behavior and level of performance. This could be explained by the fact that we're talking about a brand-new product, but the truth of the matter is that a couple of tens of dollars shaved off this average price point wouldn't really hurt in promoting its sales. Sales package - Canon Ixus 130; - battery pack; - battery charger; - hand strap; - USB cable; - USB/AV adapter; - User's Manual.
