colour laser printer excellent quality. cheap to print. the cartridges seem to last forever. Konica Minolta sinks the planet These toner cartridges are incredibly wasteful - the whole unit has to be replaced every time.

RE ADY

Configuration Menu Overview
The menus with settings that can be set from the control panel of the magicolor 5430 DL are structured as shown next page.

Configuration Menu

Keep media between 35% and 85% relative humidity. Toner does not adhere well to moist or wet paper. Layered Adhesive Folded, creased, curled, embossed, warped, or wrinkled Perforated, three-hole punched, or torn Too slick, too coarse, or too textured Different in texture (roughness) on the front and back Too thin or too thick Stuck together with static electricity Composed of foil or gilt; too luminous Heat sensitive or cannot withstand the fusing temperature (180C [356F]) Irregularly shaped (not rectangular or not cut at right angles) Attached with glue, tape, paper clips, staples, ribbons, hooks, or buttons Acidic Any other media that is not approved

Thick Stock

Paper thicker than 90 g/m2 (24 lb bond) is referred to as thick stock. Test all thick stock to ensure acceptable performance and to ensure that the image does not shift. Capacity Tray 1 Up to 20 thick stock sheets, depending on their thickness. Not supported
Tray 2 and 3 Orientation Face up Driver Thick stock 1 (91-150 g/m2) Media Type Thick stock 2 (151-210 g/m2) Weight 91210 g/m (2555.9 lb) Duplexing Not supported DO NOT use thick stock that is
Mixed with any other media in the trays (as this will cause printer misfeeding)

Envelopes

Print on the front (address) side only. Some parts of the envelope consist of three layers of paperthe front, back, and flap. Anything printed in these layered regions may be lost or faded. Capacity Tray 1 Tray 2 and 3 Face up Envelope Up to 10 envelopes, depending on their thickness Not supported
Orientation Driver Media Type Weight Duplexing
91163 g/m (2543 lb) Not supported
Use envelopes that are Common office envelopes approved for laser printing with diagonal joints, sharp folds and edges, and ordinary gummed flaps Because the envelopes pass through heated rollers, the gummed area on the flaps may seal. Using envelopes with emulsion-based glue avoids this problem. Approved for laser printing Dry DO NOT use envelopes that have Sticky flaps Tape seals, metal clasps, paper clips, fasteners, or peel-off strips for sealing Transparent windows Too rough of a surface Material that will melt, vaporize, offset, discolor, or emit dangerous fumes Been presealed

If you have problems feeding 20 sheets, try loading only 110 sheets at a time. Loading a large number of transparencies at one time may cause static buildup, thus causing feeding problems. Capacity Tray 1 Up to 20 transparencies, depending on their thickness Not supported
Tray 2 and 3 Orientation Face up Driver Transparency Media Type Duplexing Not supported Use transparencies that are Approved for laser printing
DO NOT use transparencies that Have static electricity that will cause them to stick together
What Is the Guaranteed Imageable (Printable) Area?
The printable area on all media sizes is up to 4 mm (0.157") from the edges of the media. Each media size has a specific imageable area, the maximum area on which the printer can print clearly and without distortion.

Printable Area

This area is subject to both hardware a limits (the physical media size and the margins required by the printer) and a = 0a = a = 4 mm (0.157") 0.157" (4 mm) software constraints (the amount of memory available for the full-page frame buffer). The guaranteed imageable (printable) area for all media sizes is the page size minus 4 mm (0.157") from all edges of the media.

Imageable AreaEnvelopes

Envelopes have a nonguaranteed imageable area that varies with envelope type. The envelope print orientation is determined by your application.
Nonimageable area 4 mm (0.157")

Nonguaranteed area

Guaranteed area

Page Margins

Margins are set through your application. Some applications allow you to set custom page sizes and margins while others have only standard page sizes and margins from which to choose. If you choose a standard format, you may lose part of your image (due to imageable area constraints). If you can custom-size your page in your application, use those sizes given for the imageable area for optimum results.

Loading Media

How do I load media?
Take off the top and bottom sheets of a ream of paper. Holding a stack of approximately 200 sheets at a time, fan the stack to prevent static buildup before inserting it in a tray. Do not fan transparencies.

Replacing the Waste Toner Bottle
When the waste toner bottle becomes full, the message WASTE BOTTLE FULL appears in the message window. The printer stops and will not start again until the waste toner bottle is replaced. Open the printers front cover.
Turn the dial on the waste toner bottle counterclockwise until it is in the unlock position.

Lock Unlock

Slowly slide the waste toner bottle all the way out. Be careful not to spill any toner.
Remove the cap attached to the side of the waste toner bottle, and then attach it at the position shown in the illustration.
Dispose of the waste toner bottle.
Dispose of the waste toner bottle according to your local regulations. Do not burn the waste toner bottle.
Prepare a new waste toner bottle. Before installing the waste toner bottle, be sure that the dial on the waste toner bottle is unlocked.
Slide the waste toner bottle all the way into the printer.
Turn the dial clockwise until the waste toner bottle is in the locked position.

Unlock Lock

If the waste toner bottle is not fully inserted or if the dial is not locked, the front cover cannot be closed.
Replacing the Transfer Roller
When the time to replace the transfer roller is reached, the message TRANS.ROLLER END appears. Printing can continue even after this message appears; however, since the print quality is reduced, the transfer roller should be replaced immediately. When replacing the transfer roller, also replace the ozone filter. A new ozone filter is included with the new transfer roller.
While pushing the levers to the inside, move the roller presser toward you.
While continuing to press the levers, remove the transfer roller.
Prepare a new transfer roller.
While pressing the levers, insert the shaft of the transfer roller into the bearings.
Move the levers away from you until it snaps into place.

PRINT CONFIG PAGE

The configuration page prints and the printer goes back to READY.
Preventing Media Misfeeds
Make sure that. Media matches the printer specifications. Media is flat, especially on the leading edge. The printer is on a hard, flat, level surface. You store media in a dry location away from moisture and humidity. You remove transparencies from the output tray immediately after printing to avoid static buildup. You always adjust the media guides in the tray after inserting the media (a guide that is not properly adjusted can cause poor print quality, media misfeeds, and printer damage). You load the media printing-side up in the tray (many manufacturers place an arrow on the end of the wrapper to indicate the printing side). Avoid. Media that is folded, wrinkled, or excessively curled. Double feeding (remove the media and fan the sheetsthey may be sticking together). Fanning transparencies since this causes static. Loading more than one type/size/weight of media in a tray at the same time. Overfilling the trays. Allowing the output tray to overfill (the output tray has a 250-sheet capacity misfeeding may occur if you allow media to accumulate more than 250 sheets at one time). Allowing the output tray to fill with more than a few transparencies.
Understanding the Media Path
Understanding the printers media path will help you locate media misfeeds. 1 Output tray 2 Toner cartridge 3 Transfer belt unit 4 Laser 5 Tray Tray 2 (optional) 7 Tray 3 (optional) 8 Duplex option 9 Fuser unit

Clearing Media Misfeeds

To avoid damage, always remove misfed media gently, without tearing it. Any pieces of media left in the printer, whether large or small, can obstruct the media path and cause further misfeeds. Do not reload media that has misfed.
The image is not fixed on the media before the fusing process. If you touch the printed surface, the toner may stick to your hands, so be careful not to touch the print face when removing the misfed media. Make sure not to spill any toner inside the printer.
Unfused toner can dirty your hands, clothes, or anything else it gets on. If you accidentally get toner on your clothes, lightly dust them off as best as you can. If some toner remains on your clothes, use cool, not hot water, to rinse the toner off. If toner gets on your skin, wash it off with cool water and a mild soap.
If you get toner in your eyes, wash it out immediately with cool water and consult a doctor. If, after clearing the media misfeed, the misfeed message in the control panel window persists, open and close the printers covers. This should clear the misfeed message.

LPD/LPR

LPD/LPR (Line Printer Daemon/Line Printer Request) is a platformindependent printing protocol that runs over TCP/IP. Originally implemented for BSD UNIX, its use has spread into the desktop world and is now an industry standard.
SLP (Service Location Protocol) simplifies the discovery and use of network resources such as printers by automating a number of network services. Traditionally, in order to locate services on the network, users had to supply the host name or network address of the machine providing the desired service. This has created many administrative problems. However, SLP (Service Location Protocol) simplifies the discovery and use of network resources such as printers by automating a number of network services. It provides a framework that allows networking applications to discover the existence, location, and configuration of networked services. With SLP users no longer need to know the names of network hosts. Instead, they need to know only the description of the service they are interested in. Based on this description, SLP is able to return the URL of the desired service. Unicast, Multicast, and Broadcast SLP is a unicast and a multicast protocol. This means that messages can be sent to one agent at a time (unicast) or to all agents (that are listening) at the same time (multicast). However, a multicast is not a broadcast. In theory, broadcast messages are heard by every node on the network. Multicast differs from broadcast because multicast messages are only heard by the nodes on the network that have joined the multicast group. For obvious reasons network routers filter almost all broadcast traffic. This means that broadcasts that are generated on one subnet will not be routed or forwarded to any of the other subnets connected to the router (from the routers perspective, a subnet is all machines connected to one of its ports).
Multicasts, on the other hand, are forwarded by routers. Multicast traffic from a given group is forwarded by routers to all subnets that have at least one machine that is interested in receiving the multicast for that group.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is actually a set of protocols for managing complex networks. SNMP works by sending messages to different parts of a network. SNMP-compliant devices, called agents, store data about themselves in Management Information Bases (MIBs) and return this data to the SNMP requesters.

TCP/IP

Most networks combine TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) with the lower-level protocol IP (Internet Protocol). TCP establishes a virtual connection between two host systems and guarantees the delivery of data between them while IP specifies the format and addressing of this data sent between these two host systems.
Printing via IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) Windows Server 2003/XP/2000

Adding an IPP Port

Printing via IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) Windows Me/98SE
To print via IPP under Windows Me/98SE, you must first do the following:
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/downloads/contents/WUPreviews/IPP/Default.asp and follow the instructions to download WPNPINS.EXE, the Internet Print Services update file for Windows 98SE. Install the WPNPINS.EXE file by locating it in Windows Explorer and then double-clicking the WPNPINS.EXE.

Adding an IPP port

There are three ways to add an IPP port under Windows Me/98SE: Using setup.exe, using the Add Printer Wizard (without a printer driver already installed), and using the Add Port (with a printer driver already installed). Using setup.exe Double-click setup.exe in the drivers\english\Win9x folder on the Utilities and Documentation CD-ROM. (Unless otherwise noted, all dialog boxes pictured here are taken from a Windows Me operating system.)

You can install the printer now, but you will not be able to print to it until it comes back online or is made available. Choose Cancel to return to the previous dialog box and then type a valid pathname.
If you entered a valid path in the previous step, the following message displays: The server on which the printer resides does not have a suitable printer driver installed. Click OK if you wish to install the driver on your local machine. The reason for this is that you do not yet have a printer driver installed. Choose OK. Ensure that the port entered above is selected by default by checking the Set as default printer? check box and then choose OK.
Enter the printer name in the next dialog box and choose OK.
Choose OK to finish installing the printer driver. The IPP port will be the default port.
Using the Add Printer Wizard Choose Start>Settings>Printers to access the Add Printer wizard. (Unless otherwise noted, all dialog boxes pictured here are taken from a Windows Me operating system.) In the second dialog box, select the Network Printer radio button and then choose Next.
