Before You Start Testing
About the meter and test strips
Carefully read and follow the instructions in the Owners Booklet and Package Inserts for the test strips and control solutions. It is very important to follow the instructions in order to prevent a wrong result or improper treatment. Review the time and date set on your meter before you begin testing. Your system comes with a preset time and date (Eastern Time). You may need to change the time to your time zone. Your new meter is designed and can be used for testing fresh capillary whole blood samples (for example, blood from your fingertip or forearm). Use only ACCU-CHEK Compact test strips. Inspect the test drum container before using them for the first time. If you see any damage to the container cap or if anything prevents the cap from closing properly, do not use the test drums. Contact the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center. Damaged test strips can cause inaccurate results, which could lead to improper treatment. Although you always apply whole blood to the test strip, your system has been calibrated to deliver plasma-like values for easier comparison to lab results. Do not use the ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus system for testing of arterial blood. The meter, test strips and control solutions are only for use outside the body (in vitro). Do not eat the test strips. Do not swallow or inject control solutions, or use control solutions for any purpose other than testing the ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus system. The ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus system has been found to be accurate at altitudes up to 10,150 feet. Refer to your Test Strip and Control Solution Package Inserts for additional health-related information. It is always a good idea to have a back-up testing method available. Failure to test could cause a delay in treatment decisions and lead to a serious medical condition. Examples of back-up testing methods include a back-up meter or testing by a lab. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other possible back-up methods.
Some people with diabetes do not experience symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Others, such as children or people who are unconscious or have certain disabilities, may not be able to communicate their symptoms to caregivers. For these reasons, do not change any treatment without first talking to a doctor. Run a control test when you open a new box of test strips or if you think that your test result is incorrect. Running a control test lets you know that the meter and test strips are working properly. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR TREATMENT BASED ON A SINGLE RESULT THAT DOES NOT MATCH HOW YOU FEEL OR IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR TEST RESULT COULD BE INCORRECT. If your blood sugar result doesnt match how you feel and you have followed the instructions in this Owners Booklet, follow your doctors instructions, or call your doctor.
Certain substances can interfere with the ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus blood glucose system and cause falsely high results. For example, if you use peritoneal dialysis solutions containing icodextrin (such as Extraneal), or take certain immunoglobulin therapies that contain maltose (such as Octagam 5%), it will cause inaccurate results. For more information, refer to the Test Strip Package Insert, or ask your doctor. If you are very dehydrated or urinating frequently, you may get an inaccurate test result. If you think you are dehydrated, call your doctor right away.
Special Information for Healthcare Providers and Caregivers
Do not use this device to measure blood sugar in people who are experiencing cardiovascular collapse (severe shock) or decreased peripheral blood flow. Consult your physician to determine if it is appropriate for your child to be taught how to use the meter system or any other medical products.
Important Information About Your New System
Your new blood glucose system is designed and approved for testing fresh capillary whole blood samples (for example, blood from your fingertip or palm). The system is for outside the body (in vitro) use. It should not be used to diagnose diabetes. Use only ACCU-CHEK Compact test drums. Other test drums (or test strips) cannot be used. Using other test strips with this meter can produce inaccurate results. Run the control tests explained in this booklet to make sure your system is working properly. Carefully dispose of used test strips and lancets.

Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 23
Notes:
Any time you open and close the drum door, the test drum will rotate until the meter finds the next available test strip. Only open the drum door when the meter is off. Opening the drum door when the meter is turned on may damage the meter. Once you remove a test drum from its container and install it into your meter, you have 90 days or until the Use By date printed on the container to use all the test strips. The meter automatically tracks this 90-day period for you. If a test drum has been in the meter longer than 90 days, the test strip, drop, drum, bottle, and clock symbols are displayed when you turn on the meter. The 90-day period automatically resets if the drum door is opened. If you do take out a partially used test drum and put it back in the meter, the drum will be displayed with the bottle flashing. This means you should run a control test. For more information, see Chapter 2, Control Testing. Keep the test drum container or the container label until you are finished with the test drum. You will need to refer to the control ranges on the label when you run a control test. When a test drum is empty, the dot shows in the test strip count window on the back of the meter. End and the test drum symbol flash on the display.
Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 24
Store the test strips at 36 F to 86 F. Do not freeze. Allow the test strips to warm to the operation temperature (43 F 111 F ) prior to use. Be sure to check the Use By date on the test strip container. Do not use the test strips after that date. See Chapter 5, Display Messages and Troubleshooting for the error code for expired test strips. If the Use By date is missing or cannot be read, do not use the test strips and call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072. Do not reuse test strips. Once you have put control solution or blood on a test strip, throw it away. If you need to retest, use a new test strip.
The cap on the test drum container contains chemicals that could be harmful if swallowed.
DO NOT expose test strips to heat, moisture or humidity. Temperatures outside the required range, as well as moisture and humidity (bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, car, or garage) can damage your test strips and lead to inaccurate results. DO NOT bend, cut, or alter the test strips. DO NOT get dirt, food, or other material on the test strip. Not following these precautions can lead to inaccurate results.
Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 25
Test Strip Count
Each time you press to turn the meter off, the number of test strips remaining in the drum is displayed. The number of remaining test strips is displayed as long as you hold down. In this example, there are 12 test strips in the drum.
When you release
, the meter turns off.
After a test, if the drum has three or fewer test strips remaining, the number, the test strip symbol and drum symbol flash on the display window. If you press only briefly when turning the meter off, the number of test strips remaining is displayed only briefly or not at all. If you have not performed a test since last replacing the drum, the meter cannot tell how many test instead of the number of test strips remaining. Once you strips remain. The meter displays perform a test with a new drum, the number of test strips remaining is displayed when you press to turn the meter off. Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 26
Changing the Batteries
1. Push the battery cover in the direction of the arrow shown. Lift up on the battery cover to remove it.
2. Remove the old batteries. Insert the new batteries with the + and ends matching the marks in the battery compartment.
3. Place the battery cover over the batteries. The battery cover MUST BE flat and almost closed. The small tab attached to the battery cover still shows. Push in the direction of the arrow shown to lock the battery cover in place.
Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 27
The meter uses two AAA batteries. Use long-lasting alkaline (not rechargeable) batteries and keep an extra pair on hand. Always replace both batteries at the same time and with the same brand. When changing the batteries, try to insert the new batteries within two minutes. If it takes longer than two minutes, you may need to reset the time and date. Try to wait until the current test drum you are using is empty before replacing the batteries. Otherwise, the meter may take some time to advance to the next test strip and may give an incorrect use-by date warning. If you open the drum door while the batteries are out of the meter, you may need to reset the time and date, but all test results stay in the memory. If you press any button while the batteries are out of the meter, you will need to reset the time and date. If the meter is turned on and you decide not to run a test, the meter turns off automatically after five minutes. The battery symbol on the display means the batteries are low and should be changed soon. If you turn on the meter and the display goes blank, no more tests can be run until the batteries are replaced. Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 28
Chapter 2: Control Testing
Why Run Control Tests?
Running a control test lets you know that your meter and test strips are working properly. You should run a control test when:
You open a new box of test drums. You left the cap off the test drum container before using the drum. You want to check the meter and test drum. Your test strips were stored in extreme temperatures or humidity. You dropped the meter. The bottle symbol flashes on the meter display. Your test results do not agree with the way you feel. You want to make sure you are testing correctly.
12. Hold the meter so the test strip points downward. This helps the test strip release to turn from the meter. Slide and release off the meter and release the test strip. Throw the used test strip away. 45
13. To remove the lancet, take off the black cap by using your thumb and finger to pull on the recessed area.
14. Hold the meter so the lancet points downward. Press the plunger to release the lancet into a puncture-proof container. Snap on the black cap after lining up the notches.
For more information about your test results, see Chapter 3, Understanding Your Test Results.
Important Information About Running a Blood Sugar Test with Blood from Your Palm, Forearm, Upper Arm, Thigh, or Calf (non-fingertip testing)
You have the option of testing other places on your body besides the fingertip. You can test the palm, forearm, upper arm, thigh, or calf. While fingertip blood can be tested at any time, there are times when testing from other places is not idealusually when your blood sugar is rapidly changing. Please read the following section before you try testing from other places.
Important:
Talk to your doctor before you begin non-fingertip testing.
Do not change your treatment because of just one result. NEVER ignore symptoms of high or low blood sugar. If your blood sugar does not match how you feel, do a fingertip test to confirm your result. If the fingertip result still does not match how you feel, call your doctor. Tests from sites other than your fingertip may be done: Immediately before a meal Fasting Fingertip test only: Two hours or less after eating After exercising If you are sick If your blood sugar is low If you often do not notice when your blood sugar is low When basal insulin is most active After injecting rapid-acting insulin (two hours or less)
Preparing the ACCU-CHEK Softclix Plus Lancing Device for Non-Fingertip Testing
Use a new lancet for each non-fingertip test to avoid infection and get a virtually pain-free test. Remember to use the clear cap to do a non-fingertip test.
1. Slide AND hold down on the release button AND, at the same time, pull down on the lancing device to remove it from the meter. Chapter 3: Testing Your Blood Sugar 49
Preparing the Lancing Device for Non-Fingertip Testing (continued)
4. Snap on the clear cap after lining up the notches. The cap snaps easily into place.
5. Twist the cap to set the lancet depth. Dial the depth setting to 3 for palm testing. Dial the depth setting to 5 1/ for forearm, upper arm, thigh, or calf testing. These are suggested settings, yours may differ.
Note: We suggest starting at a depth setting of 5 /
for forearm, upper arm, thigh, or calf testing, and 3 for palm testing. Once you run a successful test, you may want to find the lowest depth setting that provides enough blood with the least amount of pain.
Running a Blood Sugar Test with Blood from a Non-Fingertip Site
You will need your meter with a test drum loaded, the ACCU-CHEK Softclix Plus lancing device, a lancet, and the clear cap from your kit. Wash your hands with warm soapy water and dry. Dirty hands could affect results. To make sure the display is working properly, turn off the meter, then press and hold M to see the complete display. All the sections should be clear and should look exactly like the display as shown below. If not, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072.
1. Slide and release
2. The meter turns on and briefly shows symbols on the display. 52
4. The time and date appear on the display with a flashing test strip and blood drop symbol.
5. Press the plunger on the lancing device (like a pen) ALL the way down until it stops. The lancing device is now ready for use.
TIP: Rub the skin prior to lancing to increase blood flow.
Chapter 3: Testing Your Blood Sugar 53
Running a Blood Sugar Test with Blood from a Non-Fingertip Site (continued)
Do not be afraid to apply pressure to the site with the lancing device to get a good blood drop.
6. Press the opening of the clear cap firmly against a fleshy area on the non-fingertip site. Press the lancing device up and down in a slow pumping motion to assist the flow of blood.
7. Keep steady pressure on the site, then press and release the plunger. Do not be afraid to apply pressure to the site with the lancing device to assist the flow of blood. Continue to press the clear cap against the site for a few seconds to allow blood to come to the surface. 54
8. Hold the meter so the test strip points downward. Do not bend the test strip.
9. Touch and hold the blood drop to the black notch on the end of the test strip. When you have enough blood in the test strip, is displayed. You may pull the meter away from the site when is displayed.
If mg/dL does not appear with the test result call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072. Use of the wrong unit of measure may cause misinterpretation of your actual blood sugar level, and may lead to incorrect treatment.
10. The on the display disappears and the test result is displayed in five seconds. If you want to flag your test result for a special event, leave the test strip in the meter. (See Chapter 3, Flagging Test Results.) Otherwise, discard the test strip as explained in Step 11. Chapter 3: Testing Your Blood Sugar 56
Symptoms of High or Low Blood Sugar
Being aware of the symptoms of high or low blood sugar can help you understand your test results and decide what to do if they seem unusual. Here are some common symptoms: High blood sugar (hyperglycemia): increased fatigue, increased appetite or increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, headache, general aching, or vomiting. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): sweating, trembling, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, tingling or numbness around mouth or fingertips. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or other unusual symptoms, test your blood sugar. If your blood sugar result is displayed as LO or HI and you have symptoms of low or high blood sugar, follow your doctors instructions or contact your doctor immediately. If your blood sugar result does not match how you feel, follow the steps under Unusual Test Results, next in this chapter. The meter is designed to provide a numerical value for blood glucose in the range of 10-600 mg/dL. If you receive a numerical value below 10 mg/dL or over 600 mg/dL and it does not match how you feel, call ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center toll-free at 1-800-858-8072.
Unusual Test Results
If your blood sugar result does not match the way you feel, follow these steps:
1. Make sure the display on your meter is working properly. 2. Check the Use By date on the test drum container. 3. Make sure the test drum container is always tightly
capped when stored.
Read Chapter 5, Maintenance and Testing. If it is past the Use By date, use a new test drum. If you think it may have been uncapped for some time, replace the test drum. Repeat the test with a properly stored test drum. Read Chapter 5, Maintenance and Troubleshooting. Read Chapter 2, Control Testing and run a control test. Read Chapter 3, Testing Your Blood Sugar with Blood from your Fingertip, and repeat a blood sugar test. Follow your doctors instructions or call your doctor immediately.
4. Make sure your meter and test drum are always stored
in a cool dry place.

Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System
1. With the meter off, press to enter the set mode. The meter turns on and briefly shows all of the display symbols.
2. On 1 and the beeper symbol flash. This means the beeper is on. Press to OFF. Press to change the beeper
to set your selection.
Setting the Year, Time, and Date
Your new meter comes with the batteries already installed and a preset time and date. You may need to change the time to your time zone. Setting the time and date is important if you use the meters memory or download your stored results to a computer.
1. With the meter off, press to enter the set mode. The meter turns on and briefly shows all of the display symbols. Next, the beeper symbol flashes with your current selection. Chapter 1: Understanding Your New System 11
2. Press and the last two numbers of the year flash. Press to change the year. Press to set your selection.
3. The 12h (12-hour) or 24h (24-hour) time format appears. The meter can display the time in either a.m./p.m. or 24:00 time format. The 24h time format is known as military time. Press to change the time format. Press to set your selection.
4. The hour flashes. Press to change the hour. If you select the 12h time format, continue to press to select the correct a.m./p.m. with the hour. Press to set your selection.
5. Repeat step 4 until the minutes, month, and day are set.
Setting the Test Reminders
Test reminders are a handy way to remind you to test. You can set 1 to 3 reminders per day. The meter beeps at the time you set, unless you press any button. You must have the beeper set to On 1 for this option. Your meter is preset with the test reminders set to OFF. You must turn it on to use this feature. If the meter is on at the test reminder time, the reminder does not occur. If you turn off the test reminder, your test reminder time settings are still saved. The test reminder beeps for 20 seconds. To stop the beeper, press any button. You can turn off individual test reminders by changing the test reminder time to 12:00 a.m. (12h time format) or 0:00 (24h time format). Because this is the way to turn off an individual test reminder, if you need to set a test reminder for midnight, you must set the test reminder one minute before (11:59 p.m. or 23:59) or one minute after midnight (12:01 a.m. or 0:01).
1. With the meter off, press to enter the set mode. The meter turns on and briefly shows all of the display symbols. Next, the beeper symbol flashes with your current selection.
2. Press and release repeatedly until you reach the display with OFF and the test reminder symbol flashing.
3. Press to change the test reminder to On.
4. If you select OFF, press to set your selection and move to the next function (see the next section, Setting the Hypoglycemic Indicator ). If you select On, press to set your selection.
Running a Control Test
You need your meter (with a test drum inserted) and control solution.
Your meter automatically recognizes the difference between ACCU-CHEK Compact Blue control solution and blood. It DOES NOT automatically recognize the difference between ACCU-CHEK Compact control solution and blood.
1. Slide and release
2. The meter turns on and briefly shows all of the display symbols. 25
3. A test strip automatically advances.
Running a Control Test (continued)
4. The time and date appear on the display with a flashing test strip and drop symbol. 5. Remove the control bottle cap. 6. Apply one drop of the control solution to a flat, clean, and easily washable surface such as the palm of your hand, a plate, or a table. Hold the meter so the test strip points downward. Gently touch and hold the black notch on the end of the Chapter 2: Control Testing 26
test strip to the control solution. Do not put control solution on top of the test strip. When you see displayed, you have enough control solution in the test strip. Do not bend the test strip while applying control solution. If you are unsure if a surface is clean, you may use the same cleaning solutions described in the Cleaning Your Meter section on page 64. 7. Place the cap on the control bottle tightly.
Example
8. The on the display gradually disappears and the test result appears. The meter automatically detects that you applied ACCU-CHEK Compact Blue control solution. The bottle symbol appears on the display when the measurement starts. When the test result appears, the bottle symbol is saved with the test result to identify it as a control test.
9. If you used ACCU-CHEK Compact control solution, the bottle symbol is not displayed. Press two times and the bottle symbol appears. This must be done before you turn off the meter in order to save the result as a control test in the meters memory.
ACCU-CHEK Compact control solution (clear) ranges
ACCU-CHEK Compact Blue control solution ranges
This is an example. Refer to the acceptable ranges on your test drum container.
10. Check that the result is within the acceptable range on the test drum container or the container label. Use the range Low or High that matches the type of control solution you used. If the result is not in the acceptable range, see Understanding Control Test Results, later in this chapter. Chapter 2: Control Testing 28
11. Hold the meter so the test strip points downward. This helps the test strip release from the meter. Slide and release to turn off the meter and release the test strip. Chapter 2: Control Testing 29
12. Throw the used test strip away.
Hold the meter so the test strip points downward. Do not bend the test strip. Do not apply control solution to the top of the test strip. Do not flood the test strip with control solution. Only a small drop of control solution is required. Never try to reuse a test strip that has been released from the meter. Do not open the test drum compartment when the motor is running. Use either ACCU-CHEK Compact Blue control solution or ACCU-CHEK Compact control solution with your ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus system or your control test results may be inaccurate. Keep the test drum container until you are finished with the test drum. You will need to refer to the acceptable ranges on the label when you run a control test. If the meter did not automatically detect that you applied control solution and you did not press two times before turning off the meter, the control result is stored with your other blood test results in the meters memory. This will include the control result with your average blood sugar test results. This could be confusing for you and your healthcare provider. If you do not turn off the meter after a test, the meter turns off automatically after about 60 seconds. The test strip then remains in the meter. When you slide and release to turn on the meter, it simply releases the test strip and turns itself off again.
Understanding Control Test Results
This is an example. Refer to the acceptable ranges on your test drum container. The label on your test drum container shows the acceptable ranges for Low and High control solutions. Your control test results should be within the listed ranges. Make sure you compare the result to the range for the level of control solution you used (Low or High). When a control test result is within the acceptable range on the test drum container, your test strips and meter are working properly. Chapter 2: Control Testing 31
Understanding Control Test Results (continued)
If a control test result is not within the acceptable range on your test drum container, here are some things you can do to solve the problem:
Troubleshooting Checks
1. Check the Use By dates on the test drum container
and control solution bottle. 2. Make sure the caps were tight on the test drum container and control solution bottle. 3. Make sure the test drum has not been in the meter more than 90 days.
Action
Replace control solution or test drums that have expired, or control solution you opened more than three months ago. If either has been open for a while, replace the test drum or control solution. If the drum symbol (with or without the bottle symbol) is flashing, the test drum has been in the meter more than 90 days or the drum door has been opened and closed so the 90-day timer is not valid. Replace the test drum. Re-read Running a Control Test and test again or ask your healthcare provider for help. Repeat the control test with a new test strip. If the result still is not within the acceptable range, contact the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072.
4. Make sure you followed all the testing steps. 5. If none of the above apply
Chapter 3: Testing Your Blood Sugar

Release Button
Use a new lancet for each fingertip test to avoid infection and get a virtually pain-free test. Remember to use the blue cap to do a fingertip test.
Remember, you can use your lancet device attached to the meter or unattached.
Chapter 4: Meter Memory and Downloading
Storing Test Results
Your meter automatically stores up to 300 test results which you can view at any time. Once 300 results are in memory, adding a new test result causes the oldest one to be deleted. If you have set the time and date on the meter (see Chapter 1, Setting the Beeper, Year, Time, and Date), this information is stored and displayed with your test results. If you have not, test results are simply stored in order, from the newest to the oldest. In addition to the test result, time, and date, your meter saves any information that was on the display when the meter turns off after the test. For example, test results marked as quality control tests are displayed with the bottle symbol in the meters memory.
Viewing Test Results
1. With the meter off, press 2. Press 3. Press. The most recent test result and mem appear. to view your results from newest to oldest, one at a time. to view your results from oldest to newest, one at a time. or to scroll thru your results more quickly.
You can hold down the 4. Slide and release
to turn off the meter.
Viewing Your Average, Lowest, and Highest Blood Sugar Test Results
With the ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus meter, you can see your 7, 14, and 30 day blood sugar test result averages, in that order. You can also see the lowest and highest blood sugar test results for each of those periods. 1. With the meter off, press. The most recent result appears.
2. Press and at the same time. The average result from the last 7 days appears. The number of test results used to obtain the average appears at the top left of the display. 3. Press and hold. The lowest test result from the last 7 days Example appears. Release and the 7-day average appears. 4. Press and hold and the 7-day. The highest test result from the last 7 days appears. Release average appears. 5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 to see your 14 and 30 day blood sugar test result averages, in that order, and the lowest and highest results for each of the average periods. 6. Slide and release to turn off the meter.
Do not change your therapy based on an individual test result recorded in memory. Results stored in memory will not be lost when you replace the batteries. When 300 results are in the memory, adding a new test result causes the oldest one to be deleted.
Downloading Your Results
We offer a variety of ways to help you download your test results. You can transfer your stored test results to track, identify patterns, and print.
Transferring Data
Follow the instructions to prepare for your method of downloading. Make sure your program is ready to accept data from the meter. 1. Locate the infrared (IR) window on the top of the meter. 2. Locate the IR window on the infrared cable. 3. Point the two IR windows toward each other. They should be 1 to 4 inches (3 to 10 cm) apart. 4. With the meter off, press and release and at the same time. 5. Two arrows appear on the display. Start downloading and the arrows flash. When the download is complete, the meter turns off.
Infrared (IR) Window
If the data did not transfer successfully, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center. To make the most of the download feature, you must set the year, date, and time on your meter.
Chapter 5: Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Cleaning Your Meter
Caring for your ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus meter is easy. If the display or the outside of the meter is dirty, wipe it off with a slightly damp cloth or cotton swab. You may use water, 10% bleach solution*, 70% alcohol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol).
Only open the drum door when the meter is turned off. Opening the drum door when the meter is turned on may damage the meter. If there is any blood in the test strip opening or if your meter displays the "E-5" message, follow these steps to clean it: 1. With the meter off, open the drum door by lifting up on the drum door tab located to the right of the test strip slot. 2. Gently wipe the small measurement window. You may use water, 10% bleach, 70% alcohol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). Wipe these fluids off immediately after application. 3. Close the drum door until it snaps. The meter turns on and rotates the test drum to the next available test strip. 4. The meter turns off. *Bleach solution must be prepared fresh the day you use it. 64
Some cleaning methods can damage your meter. To protect it, DO NOT: Use vinegar or scouring agents to clean the meter because they can harm the display and measurement window. Spray any cleaning solution directly onto the meter. Put the meter under water (or any liquid). Pour liquid into the meter.
Cleaning Your Lancet Device
To clean the ACCU-CHEK Softclix Plus lancet device, use a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft cloth. DO NOT place the entire device under water. At least once a week, disinfect the cap after cleaning by placing it in 10% bleach solution*, 70% alcohol (ethyl alcohol) or 70% rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) for 10 minutes. Allow the cap to air-dry after disinfecting.
Maintenance and Testing
Your meter needs little or no maintenance with normal use. It automatically tests its own systems every time you turn it on and lets you know if something is wrong. See Display Messages and Troubleshooting for error messages and what to do about them. If you drop the meter or think its not giving accurate readings, make sure that your test drum and control solution have not expired, then run a control test. To make sure the display is working properly, turn off the meter, then press and hold down to see the complete display. All the sections should be clear and should look exactly like the display as shown. If not, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072. *Bleach solution must be prepared fresh the day you use it. Chapter 5: Maintenance and Troubleshooting 66
Display Messages and Troubleshooting
Never make treatment decisions based on an error message. If you have any concerns, please call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The meter will not turn on or the display is blank. Possible Cause

Display Messages and Troubleshooting (continued)
The beeper is turned on. See Chapter 1, Setting the Beeper. The time and date have not been set, therefore the meter cannot calculate the average for the last 7, 14, or 30 days.
The meter is ready for a drop of blood to be applied.
The average blood sugar result for the last 7, 14, or 30 days is displayed with an n and a number. The n and number tell how many blood sugar results were used to calculate the average.
The batteries are running low. If possible, continue testing until all the test strips in the test drum have been used. Then replace the batteries and the test drum. If the battery symbol appears briefly and the display goes blank, the batteries are too low to perform any more tests. Insert two new batteries.
Blood sugar is higher than the measuring range of the system (600 mg/dL). See Chapter 3, Symptoms of High or Low Blood Sugar.
Blood sugar is lower than the measuring range of the system (10 mg/dL). See Chapter 3, Symptoms of High or Low Blood Sugar.
To make sure the display is working properly, turn off the meter, then press and hold down to see the complete display. All the sections should be clear and should look exactly like the display as shown. If not, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072. This reading may not be accurate because the test was performed outside the proper temperature range for the system, 50 to 104F. Results are displayed at temperatures within 41 to 113F.
The temperature is below or above the proper range for the meter, below 41 or above 113F. Move to an area between 50 and 104F, wait 30 minutes or more and repeat the test. Do not artificially heat or cool the meter. This can be shown three different ways: E20 and the temperature symbol together, E20 without the temperature symbol, or the temperature symbol without E20.
The meter is ready to download results to a computer.
The test drum in the meter is empty. Insert a new test drum. If the message is still displayed, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072. A dot also appears in the strip count window on the back of the meter. The hypo warning is turned on and shows the level selected.
There was not enough blood applied to the test strip for the test to start. Repeat the test with a new test strip and larger drop of blood.
If there was a partly used test drum in the meter and it took longer than two minutes to replace the batteries, the year, date, and time have to be re-set. When the year, date, and time are re-set, the meter does not know how long the partly used test drum has been in the meter. You should run a control test to verify that the test drum is useable. See Chapter 2, Why Run Control Tests? The test drum 90-day use-by period has expired. If the correct time and date were set on the meter and the drum door has not been opened since the installation of the test drum, discard the old test drum and insert a new test drum.
The drum door was opened and closed with a partly used test drum inside, or a partly used test drum was inserted.
The bar code information stored in the meter is lost. Slide and release to turn off the meter. Open and close the drum door. Make sure a test drum is loaded in the meter.
The test reminder is turned on. The test reminder symbol flashes on the display and the meter beeps, if the beeper is turned on.
There is no test drum in the meter, or the bar code on the drum is damaged or missing. Make sure your test drum has two bar codes on it. Insert a new test drum.
Blood was applied to the test strip too soon. Slide and release to turn off the meter and release the test strip, then turn on the meter again. Repeat the test, waiting for the flashing test strip and blood drop symbol before touching blood or control solution to the end of the test strip. The test strip was bent before the test started. Repeat the test with a new test strip. The measurement window is dirty. Clean the measurement window area and repeat the test. See Chapter 5, Cleaning Your Meter. There is moisture in the meter. Slide and release to turn off the meter. Let the meter dry at room temperature.
The test strip drum does not rotate. Slide and release to turn off the meter. Open the drum door and press the red drum release button. Make sure your test drum has two bar codes on it. Close the drum door. Slide and release to turn on the meter. The drum and control bottle symbol flash. The 90-day use-by period is no longer calculated for this test drum. Perform a control test. While using this test drum, the drum symbol continues to flash.
A meter error has occurred. Slide and release to turn off the meter. Then, slide and release to turn on the meter again. If the error message continues, call the ACCU-CHEK Customer Care Service Center at 1-800-858-8072.
The test strip was bent or removed during testing. Remember to slide and release , at the end of the test, to turn the meter off and allow the test strip to release. Slide and release to turn on the meter again and a new test strip advance. The test strip is stuck in the test strip slot or the test drum does not rotate. Pull the test strip out of the meter and discard it. Then, take the test drum out and reinsert it. Remember the 90-day use-by counter in the meter is no longer correct. The drum symbol flashes until you install a new test drum. The meter was turned off and on again, but the test strip is still in the meter. Hold the meter straight up and down and let the test strip drop out, or take it out manually, even if it takes a small amount of force.
