I bought it to put together an external drive to give to a friend. It worked fine. Reasonably quick and quiet None This HDD replaced a malfunctioning 80GB drive I had on my laptop. It does the job. Plenty of storage and a great price Like one reviewer said.

Good value and past experience steered my choice. I have a 9 year old Hitachi still working perfectly in my T21 IBM thinkpad. avoid the 5K160 series and go with the newer 5K250 or 5K320 series Hitachi drives low power consumption I work for a computer OEM.

Learning by Doing: KMUTT Expands Interactive Education with Hitachi Modular Storage
The mission of King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) is to create the next generation of Thailands leading scientists and technologists. To help accomplish this goal, the university developed several new interactive learning applications but its existing storage infrastructure was insufficient to support video streaming. To facilitate these new applications, manage storage costs and protect critical data, KMUTT tapped Acer Computer Co., Ltd., and Hitachi Data Systems for a modular storage solution.
King Mongkuts University of Technology Thonburi is the first among public universities in Thailand to receive full autonomy. Although its administrative system is patterned after international, government-owned universities, KMUTT has total control over its budget a privilege that allows it to own and manage property, set up new faculties and departments, and introduce new academic programs. As one of Thailands top technological universities, KMUTT has a mandate to contribute to the progress of leading scientists and technologists so they can conduct research and development designed to enhance the standard of living for all of mankind. To aid in this mission, KMUTT maintains an advanced digital library on information technology. The library is recognized by the Thai educational community as a leading knowledge resource center, and it functions as the nucleus around which the KMUTT campus revolves.
forms, including digital texts, streamed classroom videos and interactive chat rooms. Data storage systems play a vital part in helping the university achieve its goals, because they allow large volumes of end users to reliably and simultaneously access digital data from the resource center. To encourage discussion-based learning rather than more traditional lecture-style education, the KMUTT Library planned to expand its interactive offerings. Classrooms On-Demand would provide streaming video of classroom sessions so students could replay lessons for further study, and KMUTT Learning and Information Commons (KLINICS) would allow students to interactively discuss their lessons and Classroom On-Demand sessions with other students and faculty members. After the original broadcast, KMUTT planned to re-broadcast each class based on the airing schedule. But the sheer amount and various types of content requiring data storage management was quickly outpacing the universitys 11TB storage capacity. Additionally, the KMUTT Library would need greater flexibility and capacity to manage the new educational offerings.
Seeking Higher Performance and Lower Costs
Originally, the KMUTT Library relied on an IBM TotalStorage FAStT500 Storage Server system for much of its digital content. Nearly at capacity, the system was unable to provide the level of scalability that the KMUTT Library required to implement its educational programs. Along with the increased storage volume, KMUTT needed a greater level of versatility for backup and recovery procedures to ensure the protection and accessibility of its growing digital assets. The university analyzed how best to meet burgeoning storage requirements and discovered that it would actually cost more to refresh and maintain the legacy system than to purchase a complete storage replacement.

Expanding Broadcast Bandwidth and Active Learning
The KMUTT Library," which will be the Knowledge Resource Center in the year 2020, operates as a data clearinghouse for teaching and learning, conducting research both on and off the campus, and exchanging information between students and lecturers. In this manner, the KMUTT Library
Although KMUTT has never purchased Hitachi Data Systems storage products in the past, the universitys analysis demonstrated that the Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage system would provide better performance and greater capacity than other proposed storage brands we were considering. And the Hitachi platforms are interoperable with other systems in the KMUTT data center, so we gain data management flexibility and help to lower operational costs, says KMUTT Assistant Professor Dr. Bundit Thipakorn.
storage to scalable external storage or to consolidate multiple storage systems into one. The AMS200 supports both iSCSI and Fibre Channel connectivity and scales to more than 39TB of SATA intermix storage. Whats more, KMUTT can use NAS connectivity options for collaborative file-sharing applications. The system also enables KMUTT to match the value of its data to the cost of storage with a system that supports native Fibre Channel SAN and cost-effective Serial ATA (SATA) intermix drives.
The AMS200 was easy to install and integrate with the other components of our data center, says Dr. Thipakorn. Even more importantly, it has given us the capacity to amply support our new interactive learning applications without service interruptions or network slowdowns. In that way, the AMS200 has played a critical role in helping us achieve our mission of training the next generation of Thai technologists.

St Cuthberts Puts the Focus Back on Education with Hitachi Storage and Partner Services
With its strong international reputation, St Cuthberts Independent Girls Day and Boarding School is one of the leading academic institutions in New Zealand. To enhance the learning process, St Cuthberts created a strategic plan to also become one of the foremost information communications technology (ICT) schools in the country and turned to Hitachi Data Systems and partners to provide the storage capacity and reliability that would support digital literacy.
St Cuthberts is an Auckland-based college for girls from year 1 to year 13. Established in 1915, this independent college encompasses 200 staff and 1400 students, including 120 boarders. The school believes that digital literacy is crucial for students who are preparing to face the challenges of a future that will be largely driven by new technologies. Eight years ago, Stuart Mainwaring was the first technical staff member brought in to drive St Cuthberts ICT initiatives. As Information Services Manager, Mainwaring looks after the IT needs of the school, and as the schools IT and data requirements have increased, his IT department has grown from one to six staff members. One of the drivers of this information growth was the introduction of the St Cuthberts notebook program, which provides students with their own computers. The school transitioned from 25 desktop computers 6 years ago to over 1000 notebook computers today. St Cuthberts notebook program is unique in that the school supports a dual platform environment, whereby students use Apple computers from years 5 to 9 and Microsoft Windowsbased computers in
This explosion of digital data was a constant challenge for Mainwaring and his IT team, as the old storage infrastructure lacked scalability and redundancy. All information was backed up to the servers nightly with a backup window of around 18 hours. Often, the storage system would reach full capacity and Mainwaring would have to either delete information or ask the students to delete data from the system. The lack of system redundancy meant that students and staff would not have continuous access to data stored on the schools system should a system failure occur. Such a failure would be problematic not only for the schools boarding students, but also for those who participate in collaborative learning from remote locations, where they must maintain their studies online. It became clear that all staff and students required access to the IT system 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Expansion and Integration
Two of the programs testing storage boundaries were Moodle, a classroom management system with which assignments are passed around virtually, and Clickview, a video-on-demand program with which students can view everything from commercials to documentaries online. Also important to the college was the digital archiving of old data, including student records and library information dating back to the founding of the school in 1915. Education is the primary focus at St Cuthberts, says Mainwaring. People never notice us unless something goes wrong, and thats the way we like it. This desire to keep the attention on education as opposed to IT issues was the driving force behind the schools search for a new storage solution. The schools old storage system was based on direct attached storage (DAS) and could not scale, so St Cuthberts went in search of a storage area network (SAN). Before

years 10, 11, and 12. While the colleges use of modern technology is a key differentiator that sets St Cuthberts apart from other schools, it also creates a number of IT challenges. Staff usage accounts for a large share of data on the school system, but the largest amount of data by far is produced by the students who are saving all of their large digital documents, homework assignments, and e-mail messages on the schools network. Each student is
deciding on a solution from Hitachi Data Systems and Acer, with support from Connect NZ, Mainwaring reviewed storage platforms from several vendors. He considered one from IBM, but decided against it because it couldnt compare to the straightforward interface and competitive price offered by Hitachi Data Systems. Also, the IBM solution was so high-end that it couldnt scale down to meet St Cuthberts current storage needs. Mainwaring purchased a Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage model AMS200 with RAID-6 arrays and a SATA expansion unit. This provides the school with high-speed file storage and access and dual redundancy, which ensures maximum uptime. The AMS200 fulfils the schools current storage requirements
In the four months that the Hitachi system has been up and running, Mainwaring and his team have had 100 percent uptime. The cost of storage has decreased dramatically as it is now less time-consuming to run. Also, the infrastructure is now in place for cost-effective upgrades on an as needed basis. Backup time has been cut three-fold, from 18 hours to 6.
the staff and student user confidence is at an all-time high and everyone can concentrate on education. The storage systems that Hitachi Data Systems offers for midsized organizations Adaptable Modular Storage models AMS200, AMS500, and AMS1000are the most scalable, high-performance, high-availability systems in their class. Future-proofing

When Mainwaring decided his IT infrastructure needed upgrading he wasnt just thinking about the schools current situation, he was planning for the future. He recognises that technology is changing at a rapid pace and St Cuthberts has to keep up if it wants to maintain its leading-edge ICT status.

Partner Teamwork

Hitachi Data Systems worked closely with strategic partners Acer and Connect NZ as well as St Cuthberts own IT team to plan and implement the IT upgrade. Connect NZs system integration specialist worked with St Cuthberts during the planning process to determine how they were going to accomplish their IT overhaul. They assisted with pricing and product procurement and continue to provide technology support on an ongoing basis. Acer, a leading storage solution provider, helped to ease the implementation process and supplied onsite training to familiarise the team with the new solution. Hitachi Data Systems, Acer, and Connect NZ all supported the IT changes from the planning to the implementation stages with minimal impact on existing operations for a successful result.
Our old system restricted learning because data had to be strictly controlled and monitored. Now, both the staff and student user confidence is at an all-time high and everyone can concentrate on education.
Stuart Mainwaring Information Services Manager St Cuthberts College Mainwaring knows that the future holds new challenges for his IT staff, including complying with new data storage compliance regulations on the horizon, which will require hundreds of gigabytes of data for the storage and archiving of e-mail. Instead of asking for more budget to comply, Mainwaring can simply expand his Hitachi system as necessary. St Cuthberts is also in the process of opening a new campus in Kahunui. This remote location will open in 2008 and serve as an outdoor learning experience for year 10 students. To start with, Kahunui will utilise the schools old DAS system, but the long-term goal is to consolidate both campuses onto the SAN and create a disaster recovery plan. Technology is changing so fast. We have to keep up if we want to maintain the high quality of education that St Cuthberts provides, says Mainwaring. Our old system restricted learning because data had to be strictly controlled and monitored. Now, both
with the ability to expand up to quadruple the amount of storage space as the schools data requirements grow.
Seamless Transition and Remarkable Benefits
The official transition took place during school holidays in January 2007. The entire implementation process from the knock on the door to the goodbye took just three days, with only a half-day of downtime. Acer and Connect NZ were on hand to ease the implementation process and provide additional training for the St Cuthberts IT staff. We wanted as little downtime as possible and the highest guarantee that it would work the first time around, says Mainwaring. We basically turned it [the AMS200] on and it hasnt hiccupped since. The end users, unless we told them, wouldnt have known that we did anything different to our IT system.
