Creating PDF with Adobe Framemaker 6.0
Required Software: Adobe FrameMaker 6.0 build# 405, Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or 5.05 and IPC3_1.PPD Pre-requisites: Acrobat Distiller 5.0 must be properly setup, a Watched Folder must be configured, and Distiller 5.0 should be running. Refer to our document Creating PDF with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 for detailed instructions. FrameMaker 6.0 originally shipped with build# 357. Please update your copy to build# 405, its free and can be downloaded from: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/framemaker/win/6.x/fm60upd.exe IPC3_1.PPD must be properly installed. See our document Installing a PostScript Printer (IPC3_1.PPD) in Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Installing and Configuring IPC3.PPD using Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer for Windows. The latter document references our old IPC3.PPD, simply use IPC3_1.PPD in its place. The following directions should be used if your pages are black and white. If your pages contain color, refer to Color Files section later in this document. Steps for Creating a PDF File: 1. Select Print from the File menu (not shown). 2. Select the appropriate Page Range. 3. Select both Odd- and Even-Numbered Pages. 4. Deselect Collate, Last Sheet First, Skip Blank Pages, Spot Color As Black/White and Low Resolution Images. 5. Select Western Registration Marks. 6. Deselect Thumbnails. 7. Set Copies to 1. 8. Set Scale to 100%. 9. Select Print Only to File. 10. Type in a destination path and file name. In this example, the file is going directly to an Acrobat Distiller watched folder. 11. Deselect Separations. 12. Deselect Generate Acrobat Data. 13. Select the Setup button.

14. Select IPC PostScript Level 3 rev. 1 as the printer. 15. Select the proper paper size. If the trim size of your project is listed select the size +Bleed. For example, trim size is 8 3/8 x 10 7/8 select the 8.375x10.785+Bleed paper.
If the final trim size of your document is not listed please select PostScript Custom Page Size and manually enter in the values. Step 19 & 20 show how to do this.
16. Click the Properties button.
17. Click on the Paper/Quality tab.
18. Click on the Black & White radio button. 19. To set a custom paper size, click on the Advanced button.

20. Click on the Edit Custom Page Size button.
The page size must be one inch taller and one inch wider than the final trim size of your job. In this example we simply entered the size required for a letter-size full-bleed document.
21. Click the OK button 4 times and this should put you back to the first print dialog box as illustrated on page 1 of these instructions. If FrameMaker warns about downloadable fonts, click the OK button.
22. Click the Print Button. After a few moments the PDF should appear in the Out folder designated in the Adobe Distiller Watched Folder. If it doesnt, verify that Distiller is running and that the Watched Folder is active.

Color Files Adobe FrameMaker 6.0 for Windows (and previous versions) generate elements using the Graphical Device Interface (GDI). This means all page elements created by FrameMaker use the screen display engine and unfortunately are created in the RGB color space. Because of this CMYK ink values often come out different from the values you selected within FrameMaker. Images and artwork saved as an EPS will not be converted by FrameMaker to RGB. The EPS file will retain the original color space as defined in PhotoShop. On the other hand, TIFF images are always converted by FrameMaker to RGB so they should be avoided. Spot colors are especially challenging in this environment. IPC highly recommends that Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign or Adobe PageMaker should be used to layout projects requiring spot or PANTONE colors.
