System Overview This Manual
This manual illustrates how to set up and operate the GX System, how to obtain optimal lighting conditions, and how to adjust the various parameters for each game. As the GX system can be set up in a wide variety of locations and environments, the manual is designed to give a more general instruction, which can then be applied in most situations.

Summary of Technology

The Vivid Groups Mandala VGC (Video Gesture Control) System enables participants to be placed within a variety of entertaining and engaging computer generated realities. The Mandala System combines the video image of the player with an interactive virtual world where the stateof-the-art tracking system within the software reads the position of the body, allowing for realtime movement and interaction with background and foreground graphics. The GX system creates a virtual scene with objects to block or courses to navigate, and displays this on a large screen monitor that the player can see in front of them. A single video camera captures the image of the player and superimposes the players image into the virtual scene. The computer also calculates the position of the player to determine whether the player is making contact with the objects, or the orientation of their limbs and torso for control of the game. The system calculates the position of the player by tracing the outline of the player relative to a blue or green background. The computer uses the color difference between the background and any color on the player to determine what part of the total image represents the players image. The computer is then able to display the player immersed in a virtual environment by replacing the background with a computer generated scene.

System Setup Unpacking the Computer
Remove all items from packing box. If damage has occurred during shipping, DO NOT attempt to power on the unit Please call for Technical Support.

Computer Setup

Position the computer system so that the front of the unit is accessible to allow for insertion of CD or floppy disk. Also allow for room to plug the cables in at the back of the computer. The computer should not be put in an enclosed space proper ventilation should be provided as the computer generates a fair amount of heat! Ensure that the power selector switch on the Power Supply is set for the proper voltage 110 or 220 volts. Plug cables in according to included Diagram of Connections (page 4). Plug the power cable in LAST!

Camera Setup

The camera is usually positioned just above or just below the main display. It should not be placed too high or low, as this creates a distorted view of the player. The recommended height for the camera when placed above the monitor is approximately 1.8 m (6 feet), and when placed below, approximately 0.m (3 feet). In a permanent installation, it is usually best to enclose the camera to prevent unwanted tampering. Once the camera focus is adjusted, and it is set up to give a full view of the players image - it will not need to be adjusted again. The computer will need to be set up and running in order to adjust the camera properly. Run any game and move the mouse during the initial Camera Preview screen to disable auto-start. Then adjust the camera Zoom, Focus and Iris to obtain a clear image of the player. Only the blue (or green) background should show on screen if the camera is seeing beyond the background you may need to re-adjust the zoom, or use the Resize function shown in the Background Removal section.

Diagram of Connections

1.) Ensure that the power selection switch is set to the proper setting before plugging in any cables! 2.) You will be provided with a USB security key (dongle), which connects to one of the USB ports! 3.) You will be provided with a PC-TV converter (ADS TV Elite XGA). Please see the next section for instructions on connecting these devices. 4.) If the FireWire camera is to be placed more than 15 feet (4.5 m) from the computer system, you may need a FireWire hub. If there is no FireWire hub required, the Camera will connect directly to one of the computers FireWire ports.

PC-TV Connection Instructions
A.) Connect the XGA to the computers VGA output port via the supplied Cable. B.) Connect the S-Video output to the input on the display device (TV, Projector, Plasma, etc.) if available. C.) Connect the Composite Video output to the input of your display device. D.) VGA output to a monitor optional. Connect a VGA monitor here. E.) Connect the supplied power supply to the PV-TV device. The ADS TV Elite XGA may need to be adjusted in order to obtain the optimum picture consult the manual that came with the PC-TV device for instructions. Note: Your PC-TV device may not be as illustrated here. Please consult the manual for your PC-TV if you have any problems with the connections. If you require multiple display units, you may require a VGA Distribution Amplifier (see Appendix A).

Lighting Requirements

The color contrast between the background and the player is essential for the proper functioning of the system since it determines the shape of the edge of the players image. Usually this color contrast is easily distinguishable, and no special care needs to be taken to improve the color quality. However, there are situations that cause a poor contrast, and the most prevalent one is poor lighting. If the light level of the room is very low, or there are dark shadows on the background either from some object or the player themselves, then the camera may not see the background color correctly and the edge of the players image may be poor. If this is the case you may need to consider adding lights to illuminate the background screen. Diffuse lights (such as fluorescent lights) should be mounted on either side of the screen to minimize shadows from the player. In some situations, the problem is too much light. If there is sunlight streaming directly onto the player or the background, or the light levels in the room change dramatically with the passing of clouds, then it may be necessary to shade the windows and use more artificial light. Fortunately, most environments that are lit with fluorescent overhead lighting are more than adequate to get quality results. Just keep in mind that the best lighting situation is one where there is a consistent amount of light across the entire background screen with no shadows, and where the light level stays constant.

Optimal Lighting:

Even light on background No shadows on background No direct sunlight Minimal lighting fluctuations

Removing the Background

Camera Preview
The first page you will see when you run a Game is the Camera Preview page. It allows you to see the current image that the camera sees (Figure 1).
Figure 1 For your image to work properly, you must remove as much of the background as possible. This is accomplished by selecting one of the three background removal methods - SIMPLE, WIZARD, or ADVANCED. A good camera image should only show the participant and not the background (see Figure 2).
Figure 2 If the camera preview is satisfactory as in Figure 2, then press GO, otherwise select a background removal method. If you do nothing for the initial 5 seconds, you will be transferred to the game move the mouse within the first 5 seconds to stop the system from auto-running the game.
If the camera colors do not appear correct, or the image is too dark or too bright, then press CAMERA SETTINGS (see Camera Settings).
SIMPLE Background Removal
The SIMPLE background removal is the easiest method. Make sure that only the background is visible (Figure 3) without anyone standing in the camera frame, because any color that is in the camera image will also be removed. Press SAMPLE to begin background removal. A counter near the top-center of the screen will indicate what percentage of the background has been sampled.

Figure 3 When the sample is complete, step into the camera image. If the background has not been fully removed, slide the THRESHOLD slider bar slightly with your mouse to fine-tune the image. You should achieve a clean image as seen in Figure 4.

Figure 4

When the image is satisfactory, press SAVE KEY to save all the changes that were made and GO to start the game. To try a different Background Removal method, return to Camera Preview by pressing BACK.
WIZARD Background Removal
The Wizard removes the background in 3 steps; Restart, Resize and Background Removal. On the Restart page, if your image is not clear (Figure 5), or there are many artifacts/noise (Figure 6), then press CLEAR KEY to reset the camera image. After CLEAR KEY is pressed, you will proceed automatically to Step 2 of the Wizard.

Restart

Figure 5

Figure 6

If the background is fine but your image is noisy or has many holes (Figure 7), then dont press CLEAR because the background does not need to be cleared. Instead press NEXT to move on to Resize, Step 2 of the Wizard.
Figure 7 If you need to return to Restart, then press BACK.

Resize

Figure 8 The Resize page allows you to change the size of the camera image to be displayed. If the camera image has objects in it other than the player and the background color, then resize the image by clicking and dragging on the green Xs located in the upper right and lower left corners of the image. Once this is complete, press NEXT to move on to Background Removal, Step 3 of the Wizard. If you need to return to Restart, press BACK.

Background Removal

Figure 9

Figure 10

The Background Removal is the final step in the Wizard, and will allow you to remove the background color as follows: 1. Click and hold left mouse button. 2. Drag over desired area to create a box (Figure 9) and release the left mouse button 3. The box will blink for 2 seconds. Any color that is within the box within the 2-second interval will be removed (Figure 10). 4. Repeat steps until the background has been entirely removed. 5. If you wish to recover certain colors (part of clothing or body may have disappeared), use the same method above but instead use the right mouse button. EXTEND KEY eliminates background noise, by extending the pixels to the next color gradient. This removes colors very similar to the ones that have just been removed. When the image is satisfactory, press SAVE to save all the changes that were made and GO to start the game. If you need to return to Resize, then press BACK.

ADVANCED Background Removal

Figure 11

Figure 12
The Advanced background removal provides you with more freedom when removing the background than the Wizard. All the functionality of the Wizard is provided on one page, plus the ability to toggle NOISE FILTER and CLEAR HOLES. NOISE FILTER removes small bits of noise from the background. By default it is checked on. To turn it off, click on the checkbox. CLOSE HOLES fills small holes on the person. By default it is checked on. To turn it off, click on the checkbox.
CLEAR KEY will reset the camera image. UNDO will reverse the last action done. INVERT will take all the pixels that were removed and make them visible and vice versa. EXTEND KEY eliminates background noise, by extending the pixels to the next color gradient. This removes colors very similar to the ones that have just been removed. When the image is satisfactory, press SAVE to save all the changes that were made and GO to start the game. Press BACK to return to Camera Preview.

Camera Settings

The Camera Settings page (Figure 13) allows you to correct inaccurate colors, or improper brightness in the camera image. You can do this manually or automatically.

Manual Camera Setting

Using your mouse click on the desired slider and adjust till the cameras image appears as close to the actual as possible.
FIGURE 13 Press OK when you are satisfied with the camera settings, this will take you back to Camera Preview.

Automatic Camera Setting

Click the AUTO button. You will then be asked to hold a sheet of clean white paper in front of the blue square at the distance you would normally stand (Figure 14), press OK, and the settings will automatically change (Figure 15). This procedure will take less than 10 seconds. You may want to do a slight manual adjustment at the end.

Figure 14

Figure 15
Press OK when you are satisfied with the camera settings, this will take you back to Camera Preview.

How TV Elite XGA works TV Elite XGA is a class of product called a Scan Converter. The video signal Frequency and the way that images are displayed on a VGA monitor and a TV are very different. TV Elite XGA converts the Progressive Scan VGA signal from your computer into an Interlaced video signal that can be displayed on standard definition televisions. The Differences between TV and VGA VGA Frequency: Lines or Pixels: TV Frequency: Lines or Pixels: Frame Rate: Progressive Scan pixels per inch 31.5 Hz Horizontal Hz Vertical Pixels per inch; i.e. 800 x 600 Horizontal lines of Interlaced video 15.7 Hz Horizontal 60 Hz Vertical 525 Horizontal Scan lines (480 visible on the screen) 30 frames per second, but display is interlaced so only _ of the image is displayed in every _ second. Each _ second display is called a Field. There are 2 fields per frame, therefore 60 fields per second to make up 30 frames per second. From the above you can see that the basic method of displaying an image on a computer screen is very different from the way televisions work. VGA is measured in pixels per inch while TV is measured in horizontal scan lines. VGA is progressive, meaning the VGA image is presented simultaneously while a TV image is Interlaced meaning that only _ of the TV image is presented every _ second. Only with the advent of Digital High Definition TV (HDTV) are we starting to see some progressive display technology on televisions. What does this mean? While TV Elite XGA does a very good job of converting the VGA signal to display on standard definition televisions, computer images converted to be viewed on a TV will never look quite as good as the VGA image.
The Best types of computer images to display on a TV Generally computer graphic images of any type are the best types of images to be converted from VGA to TV. These include: Power Point Slides Photos Animation and video Computer Games Educational software Computer graphics Web graphics Large Font text The poorest types of computer images to display on a TV Single pixel lines like those in excel spreadsheets Small font text Common Uses for TV Elite XGA ADS Technologies has been making Video Scan Converter products for over ten years. Over the years we have learned how our customers have used these products. Below are descriptions and tips for using TV Elite XGA with some of the more common uses of this product. Power Point Presentations PowerPoint is a perfect application for TV Elite XGA. This is a great way to make presentations to small groups or classes where everyone is close enough to view a TV. The other advantage is that a TV can be easily viewed without turning off the lights in the room. This helps keep everyones attention on the presentation and room has enough light to take notes. You can use PowerPoint at any resolution (640 x 480, 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768), but the best viewing size is 800 x 600. Viewing Web Pages Viewing Web pages on a TV is an excellent application and with TV Elite XGA several people can view the page at the same time. The only drawback is that most text on web pages is quite small. Therefore we recommend using the largest text setting that your Internet Browser can display.

In Windows Explorer you set this by: 1. Click View 2. Select Text Size 3. Select Largest With this setting most of the text should be readable and the web graphics will look great. DVD, Computer Video and Streaming Video Computer Video converts great with TV Elite XGA. If you are watching a DVD movie on your PC you can display at full screen and it will fill the entire TV screen. This is a great way to get DVD video from your Computer to your TV. Internet video is great. On many websites you can watch old TV shows, movies, news video and more. The problem is that most of the video is lower resolution (320 x 240). You can use TV Elite to get this streaming video from your computer to your Big Screen TV. If you are watching Internet Streaming video, you can Use OverScan or Zoom on the TV Elite to increase the image size on the TV. This will result in better looking video than if you were to zoom the video on the computer screen. Computer Games and Animation Computer games and animation look great on TV because they are very graphical in nature. Play your computer games on your 36 TV and you will have the entire neighborhood at your house playing games! Video Conferencing Scan Converters have long been used for Video Conferencing applications. In a meeting environment it is a great way to get the video conference onto a large display screen so everyone in the meeting room can have eye contact with the video conferencing participant. Changing Video Resolutions on your computer You may need to change your VGA resolution to optimize performance of the TV Elite XGA. Here are few tips on how to accomplish this: Windows From the Desktop: From anyplace on your Windows desktop that is clear of icons or applications, Right Click and select
Properties. The Display Properties Box will appear. Use the Screen Resolution Slider to choose a new resolution setting, Click OK to set new resolution. Vertical Refresh Rate: The vertical refresh rate can be no higher than 60 Hz when you are at a resolution of 1024 x 768. At lower resolutions you can have the vertical frequency as high as 90 Hz. To change the refresh rate: 1. Open Display Properties as described above. 2. Click the Advanced Button. 3. Click the Monitor Tab and change the screen refresh rate setting. MAC To change the monitor settings on your Mac 1. Click the Apple Icon 2. Select Control Panels 3. Select Monitor 4. The Monitor settings box will open
