Distribution

Why PBS? PBS is the network that viewers tune into to watch educational television. The goal of this project is for as many Americans to have access to watch Green Living as possible. The Public Television network is ideal because PBS reaches 99% of the U.S. Households with Television, no cable channel has that reach. Home DVD The home DVD set of the shows will be available through a product offer tag at the end of each show. This gives viewers the chance to buy the DVDs for people who did not have a chance to see the broadcast. Companion Website The companion website will contain more detailed information about each episode including resources where viewers can find extended information
about what they have seen in the series. Live chats will be scheduled on the site with various experts to discuss an aspect of greening that is covered in the episodes. Forums will allow people to post their questions and advice about how to green their homes, lives, pocketbooks and the environment. Participation will be sought in terms of pictures, stories and videos about the viewers greening processes, with the best providing episode content. The site will also include downloadable short video segments for people to watch on the web and on their mobile devices. Educational Outreach Another advantage to distributing the series through Public Television is that most PBS stations have relationships with their local schools either on the K-12 level or on the Adult Education level. The Education departments at the PBS stations are very happy to have good educational content to offer to their teachers and classrooms. This series will be available to classrooms as an educational supplement. On the Green Living companion website, there will be a section dedicated to educators that will have resources for teachers to use. Each time the series is to air in local markets, screening events will be organized at the local schools and public libraries around the broadcasts. The producers will be available to make personal appearances at some events. Promotional Campaigns The first promotional campaign for Green Living is internally in the PBS system. A promotional event, i.e. a hospitality suite event or a luncheon will be held to launch the series at a national public television conference. Then all station program directors will be sent screeners of the episodes to watch. An aggressive email and phone campaign will follow and the first carriage reports will be generated. The second promotional campaign will focus on the public at large. Customized local press releases will be distributed to all local media in each market where Green Living airs. Some tune-in ads will be placed in local newspapers. The PBS stations will air customized promos to publicize their air dates and times. The final promotional campaign will focus on the educational outreach. Emails and flyers will be distributed to teachers and librarians to invite them to use the series in their classrooms and to set up live events.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsoring a PBS series offers a golden halo to the participating business or foundation. The well-educated and engaged viewers of PBS have a very positive view of its sponsors: Viewers Prefer PBS Sponsors: This high level of viewer engagement and satisfaction leads to positive results for sponsors. In the 2006 Harris Interactive poll, viewers indicated an overall appreciation for sponsors, rated more highly those companies they recognized as PBS sponsors, and indicated that they would choose to purchase from PBS sponsors. Viewers hold sponsors in high esteem: More than two-thirds of viewers believe that companies that sponsor PBS have a commitment to quality and excellence. More than half of viewers believe that companies that sponsor PBS are industry leaders. Companies recognized as sponsors are perceived as higher quality: Overall, there is a 15% increase in perceived sponsor quality (quality lift) among those who correctly recalled sponsors vs. those who didnt. Categories experiencing the greatest quality lift included: Financial Services (16% average lift); Manufacturing and Chemical (15% average lift); Retail (14% average lift); Automotive and Energy (11% average lift). Viewers would choose to support PBS sponsors: Two-thirds of viewers would choose to purchase from a company that sponsors PBS, all other things being equal. (Source: PBS Sponsorship Awareness and Impact on Quality Perceptions, Harris Interactive, August, 2006.) The timing for sponsorship couldnt be better for a company seeking to let viewers know about its concern for the health of our planet. Our soGreen Living TV Show Proposal 22
ciety is at the beginning of a transition to new ways of generating power, organizing resource distribution, dealing with waste and rebuilding our industrial base. We are all in the process of reorganizing our lives around these emerging realities. Green Living exists to help people make that transition as it pertains to their lives, household and the environment. We are looking for a mutually beneficial relationship with one to several sponsors to fund the first season of Green Living. Our budget is $1.2 million for the entire cost of the project including; all production costs, distribution, marketing and outreach efforts. Outreach includes building and maintaining a website, developing instructional materials for teachers and a book about the series.

even though only 50% of them felt this would improve their employment prospects.3 These groups are not isolated in their views. The economics of energy conservation are so cost effective that energy conserving practices are rapidly being adapted throughout the world. These practices include everything from better windows and insulation for buildings, energy efficient appliances and solar powered highway lighting in America and Europe, to people in remote third world villages finding micro solar installations more economic than flashlights and batteries or petroleum powered generators. Even in rural America if one is more than a quarter mile from power lines solar energy is immediately cost effective. renewable energy is Europes fastest-growing source, and California gets 9% of its electricity from renewable sources other than hydroelectricity. The worlds fastest-growing energy technologies, outpacing even energy savings, are wind power, increasing by about 26% a year, and photovoltaics (solar cells), whose annual growth has lately exceeded 70%4 Socially Responsible Purchasing and Investing A large percentage of the American population actively seeks out socially responsible purchases and investments. A survey by the Natural Marketing Institute found that 30% of adult American consumers, or 63 million people, make purchasing decisions based on the issues of the environment, social justice, health, personal development and sustainable living. These so-called LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) consumersalso referred to as cultural creativesspent $227 billion on socially and environmentally responsible goods and services in 2001. According to a 2001 study by the Social Investment Forum, more than $2.3 trillionor nearly 1 out of 8 dollars in the United States under professional manage5 mentare in socially screened portfolios. Holistic Health and Organic Foods One of the most rapidly increasing practices in America is the purchasing of organic foods.4 Though this is an action mostly taken on an individual
and family basis, it has vast implications. It is part of a simplification and naturalization of all our living processes. Eating better quality foods will often improve individual health, long and short term, which cuts out a whole range of medical expenses for the lifetime of the person involved. Nursing a child confers a stronger immune system, meaning fewer sore throats, chronic earaches and deafness, better neurological development, fewer behavior problems, higher intelligence, proper skeletal developmentthus more attractive faces and bodies, not so likely to need braces and other expensive medical procedures, which often cause problems of their own. To purchase organic foods, which are often increasingly competitive with commercially grown (and if the price supports for pesticides and petroleum-based products were removed, vastly cheaper) supports family based farms, smaller producers, renewable agricultural practices, more humane treatment of animals, and the export of better practices to other countries, as is now happening in Mexico. The 4-billion year old book of nature is ours to open and it offers unimaginable wealth and comfort to all the living creatures of earth if it is read and applied. Buckminster Fuller said over thirty years ago that the ever-regenerative resources of the world could offer each human on earth the equivalent of $400-billion of wealth if properly used, without the destruction of nature or other humans. This is the path that uses information instead of tons of raw goods. We aim to help create this new world and we are looking for partners. Notes
