The house was all wood, says Vicki Wells, a designer from Wells & Trembath who projectmanaged the entire refurbishment process of this large detached house in Hertfordshire. There was an entrance hall with wooden stairs and balustrade, plus doors, skirting and architrave all in timber. The two domed ceilings on the first floor landing and in the kitchen were also both clad in wood. So although the house was large, it felt dark and claustrophobic, recalls Vicki. Several colour, finish and layout alterations later, the interior is now an unrecognisably bright space filled with plenty of light. I spent about 18 months looking for the perfect house, until it got to the stage where we were left with the options to either build from new or look to renovate if we were to get the home that we desired, says the owner, who works in entertainment and lives in the property with her partner, a chef. We were going for a chic hotel look and got lots of inspiration from places we had stayed in, restaurants that we had eaten at, and bars that we had been to. We were definitely going for a bit of wow factor with the polished porcelain Bibliotheque floors, glass balustrade and gallery on the stairs, plus by putting in large glass windows and folding doors in the main living/ kitchen area. Previously the house was very dark with little natural light and we wanted to turn this into a light, airy, modern and open space, she says.
There is a Lutron Graphik Eye system on the ground floor, with programmes for different lighting moods such as task/ambient/ entertaining effects. Other inspirations around the property taken from commercial spaces include the capacious dressing room on the galleried landing, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and an ethereal white leather-clad seating area in the hallway flanked by two enormous fishtanks. The bespoke bar in pony skin in the entertainment room is set against an LED back-lit Perspex wall and multi-coloured downlighters. Meanwhile the downstairs cloakroom also takes on a nightclub-esque form with a sexy, moody feel, as the owner describes it. As sad as it seems, the cloakroom is my pride and joy! she says. Its a bit of a novelty but I thought it would be great for when friends were over. I envisioned it to be a bit like when youre out in a club and you pop to the ladies, there is an attendant spraying you with perfume, handing out chewing gum, lollipops, etc. I could see my friends and
I having a little drink at home but popping in here to touch up the hair and make-up, enjoying a girly chat before heading off out. I originally saw a vanity unit that I liked but turned out to be rather expensive, so I drew a design and Vicki got it made and it turned out better than I had imagined. I especially like the crystal drawer handles. Though an involved process, the owner is very pleased with the end result. I am delighted with the finished look of the house, she says. It has been a really big project with a lot of time, effort and research invested, eventually entailing that we changed every room in the house! All the bedrooms are like hotel suites with bathrooms. Choosing the tiles from Bibliotheque was great; there is such a huge range available now its amazing. We have put in some snakeskin effect tiles, alligator effect ones, tiles that look like wood, and we have some beautiful mosaic tiles in magnificent colours.

The kitchen by Neil Lerner was a particularly important part of the house re-design to the owner. To me, its the hub of the house, she says. I wanted to be able to cook for family and friends, but not feel secluded from them, so the emphasis here was its functionality. A wall was knocked down to make way for an open-plan kitchen/family room so I could cook and chat at the same time. The glass doors let in so much natural light and its lovely to be able to have brought the outside in. Im really fussy about things looking symmetrical and uncluttered, hence the handle-less doors and balance of appliances. The contrast of the high gloss and wood units is simple and clean but stunning. I also really liked the idea of the two separate blocks rather than continuing the units around the corner; its something a little bit different and satisfies my obsession for visual harmony. There is plenty of storage to keep the kitchen clutter free. And of course the champagne cooler was a must! It is a fabulous kitchen for everyday use and in which to entertain. We have definitely got the home we set out to achieve. Overall, the house feels spacious, its light and airy, there is a place for everything and a room for everyone!

EU Energy efficiency information.
This scheme, which covers refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and electric ovens is designed to offer consumers a standardised method of choosing the most energy efficient appliances. For refrigerators and freezers, as well as stating the energy efficiency class (A most efficient, G least efficient) the label also gives the annual electricity consumption (i.e. running cost) and the usable storage capacity. For washing machines the label also states the wash performance and spin efficiency. Three ratings are given to ensure energy efficiency combined with effective washing and drying. For dishwashers the label states energy efficiency, washing and drying performance. For electric ovens the label also states the energy consumption (in kWh) and the usable volume of the oven. If the oven is a double oven it will carry this information for both ovens.
